Scarlett Johansson, “Falling Down” [Tom Waits Cover]
TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek produced this, and the music is gorgeous: a big, churning squall that’s as creamy and dreamy as meringue — it’s like the best moments of the Cocteau Twins all gathered up at once. It’s like if someone built a gorgeous, elaborate marble mantle so rich in detail it completely distracted you from the garish, out-of-place and totally off-key vase sitting in the center of it.
Feist, “I Feel It All” [Escort Remix]
Brooklyn R&B group Escort liven up this Feist standby by cross-breeding it with the Cure’s “Close to Me” and Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk. Which makes it an aging, self-involved Goth who divorces you and then tries to sell you an iPod.
Various Artist, “Cinnamon Girl” [Neil Young Covers]
Well, we don’t know the reason, but apparently “Cinnamon Girl” is the most popular cover song of all time. There’s a version here of Radiohead covering it. Radiohead don’t cover anything, unless it’s by a Scandinavian band with like 32 consonants in their name. Take that, “Happy Birthday.”
Tokyo Police Club, “Tessellate” [Live on Letterman]
Toronto quartet show off their sanded-down and shined-up guitar pop on live television. We don’t really have a chaser for this one. It’s just kind of a good song.
Madonna, “4 Minutes to Save the World” [Jacques Lu Cont Remix]
British producer Lu Cont frees Madonna’s latest single from Timbaland’s trembling, twitchy and — at this point, let’s face it — tired production tricks to turn it into a piece of effortlessly aerodynamic pop. He also scraps most of the vocal. So basically, he does this song nothing but favors.
