Reality Show Recap: “Rock the Cradle” Is No Longer Brown Nor Sure

4/25/08, 11:50 am EST

Each week on MTV’s Rock the Cradle, the sons and daughters of musical icons compete for the sort of exposure they would have received anyway on the basis of their DNA. Rock Daily sorts through the nepotistic wreckage.

Children’s Story: Dull non-controversy continued in the Cradle Lounge this week, as Jesse Blaze Snider said something vaguely opinionated and everybody flipped out. Nobody flipped out better than Bobby Brown, however, who was irate that his son Landon earned such low scores for his performance of “My Prerogative” last week. As for the show, the viewers said goodbye to both Lil B. Sure and Landon Brown, which prompted Bobby Brown to announce “We’re all going on tour”; the prospect of a show that included sets from Landon & Bobby Brown and Lil & Al B. Sure gives Rock Daily night terrors.

Baby Geniuses: Jesse Snider continues to rule this show; his version of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” was uniformly excellent despite some middling scores from the judges. Lucy Walsh did a solo piano version of an emo power ballad that made her sound like Alanis Morissette (that’s a compliment). And though the judges hated it, Chloe Lattanzi’s strange remake of Korn’s “Freak on a Leash” took brass balls. Her voice was all over the place, her stage writhing was awkward — the whole thing was a fascinatingly uncomfortable three minutes of television.

Red-Headed Stepchildren: The top scores this week went to milquetoasty Crosby Loggins, despite the fact that Foo Fighters‘ “Long Road to Ruin” completely swallowed his non-personality. Lara Johnston’s version of “Lady Marmalade” was fine vocally but made absolutely no impact, making her musical DNA a perfect match for her dad’s.

Who Is Getting Disowned: Next week sees another two people going home (I’m sure if MTV could cut four people and skip right to the finale, they’d do it). Despite her watchable insanity, it seems like the end of the road for Chloe Lattanzi. With Loggins protected by top scores, that leaves Lara Johnston as next week’s other big loser.

Why you insist on calling Loggins “boring” or “milquetoast” is beyond me! At worst, he takes his musicianship seriously and maybe could loosen up a wee bit, but overall his vocals and incomparable guitar playing leave the others in the dust. That kid ROCKS!

I agree with Cathy McCormick. The reason Loggins doesn’t “connect” is that he knows he doesn’t belong there. He’s older than the others; he’s already got an album and a following. He doesn’t really fit in, and he doesn’t care to. He’s doing the best he can on a show he knows is basically a sham and he can’t win. I think he’s being a good sport, and raising the bar for the other contestants.

Okay, lets see…. Repetitive Jessie Snyder…You must be friends with the Dad:-( Lucy Walsh is predictable and has a horrible voice, again, you always give the Eagles magazine time. They deserve it , but Lucy is awful! I would NEVER go see her in concert. Chloe is just plain terrible and Crosby and Lara are the best on the show! Again, You just proved once more that Rolling Stone has a thing against Tom Johnston and The Doobie Brothers! Grow up…Don’t take it out on this incredibly talented young lady. Oh, and you must have a thing against Kenny Loggins too. I used to enjoy reading Rolling Stone magazine. I will never buy a copy of it again.

I definitely agree with Danae. Lara Johnston is one of the best. You should give her the credit she deserves. At least she can sing and doesn’t talk through her music like Lucy does.

Feel bad for everyone involved in this project. It was a real miss. Freemantle, You have Idol which is still awesome. You can’t reproduce a show as great as inspiring as that. Especially with mildly talented kids of barely famous parents. No cache or originality. judging was boring and predictable and who are they really anyway. Simon is irresplaceabel!! Excited about Denise richards upcoming show and oh yea J LO has a reality show coming soon too.

AmericanIdolFan | 4/26/2008, 10:38 am EST

The beauty of Idol is that those children are just “regular guys”. I recently started watching and am a true addict. When I was flipping through and saw this “Cradle stuff” it just made me laugh. I heard through a friend at Mtv that it cost a fortune to produce. What a waste. Money could have been ginven to charity. I love how Idol does the “give back” thing. Fremantle you will recover. Tons of crappy shows onthese days. This one does take the cake though!!!!!!!

stevie | 4/26/2008, 10:41 am EST

Can we send all these kids back to their mansions now!!!!!!

please | 4/26/2008, 5:04 pm EST

Lucy will probably win. Still she doesn’t deserve a record deal or 100,000. Hope she is smart and gives the money to charity

R J | 4/28/2008, 1:57 am EST

Something has to be wrong with MTVs sound system because those kids can sing in person because if they didnt MTV would not have made a show about the kids trying to make it. Spending tons of money it just doesn’t make sense. So leave those kids alone and let them do what they do because i doubt everyone that has something to say cant hold a single note..

cradlewillrock | 4/30/2008, 9:51 am EST

I think Crosby Loggins will win at least I hope so. But the reality is that Jesse Blaze appeal more to like 16 year old.

Our friend Kyle continues to be in love with the guy the screams the loudest and dresses like a guy on the verge of a drug binge. Meanwhile, the talented guy (playing two instruments on the show and rolling solid scores from the judges) is ignored. Kyle surely favors the look over substance. If Loggins was competing on a network that catered to people over 21 and capable of actually enjoying talent, he would end this. Instead, it looks like second – behind Kyle’s obsession.

John Mooster | 5/6/2008, 1:48 pm EST

Agreed on the last person’s comment. If the show is a talent contest, then Loggins has no competition, period. He’s the only one who hasn’t hit a sour note, he plays multiple instruments, writes, and just because he doesn’t act like a freakin’ circus clown, you call him milquetoast? Are you insane? Is everyone taking crazy pills? He’s the real deal and the winner, hands down.

dylan | 5/7/2008, 2:49 am EST

lucy walsh was sent home on purpose because people like to watch the pathetic car wreck that is chloe whatever her name is. so stupid

Jack Hall | 5/8/2008, 3:56 pm EST

Well, If the show was to be about the best rising singer with the best potential, then it had to be Lara Johnston.
But I guess this is show biz.

deb | 5/9/2008, 12:15 pm EST

hell yeah ! i’ll go see jr. and jr. bring it on!

oh that,s right it’s a package deal with the old folks!
