Each week on MTV’s Rock the Cradle, the sons and daughters of musical icons compete for the sort of exposure they would have received anyway on the basis of their DNA. Rock Daily sorts through the nepotistic wreckage.
Children’s Story: Dull non-controversy continued in the Cradle Lounge this week, as Jesse Blaze Snider said something vaguely opinionated and everybody flipped out. Nobody flipped out better than Bobby Brown, however, who was irate that his son Landon earned such low scores for his performance of “My Prerogative” last week. As for the show, the viewers said goodbye to both Lil B. Sure and Landon Brown, which prompted Bobby Brown to announce “We’re all going on tour”; the prospect of a show that included sets from Landon & Bobby Brown and Lil & Al B. Sure gives Rock Daily night terrors.
Baby Geniuses: Jesse Snider continues to rule this show; his version of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” was uniformly excellent despite some middling scores from the judges. Lucy Walsh did a solo piano version of an emo power ballad that made her sound like Alanis Morissette (that’s a compliment). And though the judges hated it, Chloe Lattanzi’s strange remake of Korn’s “Freak on a Leash” took brass balls. Her voice was all over the place, her stage writhing was awkward — the whole thing was a fascinatingly uncomfortable three minutes of television.
Red-Headed Stepchildren: The top scores this week went to milquetoasty Crosby Loggins, despite the fact that Foo Fighters‘ “Long Road to Ruin” completely swallowed his non-personality. Lara Johnston’s version of “Lady Marmalade” was fine vocally but made absolutely no impact, making her musical DNA a perfect match for her dad’s.
Who Is Getting Disowned: Next week sees another two people going home (I’m sure if MTV could cut four people and skip right to the finale, they’d do it). Despite her watchable insanity, it seems like the end of the road for Chloe Lattanzi. With Loggins protected by top scores, that leaves Lara Johnston as next week’s other big loser.
