Carly Smithson Becomes the Latest “American Idol” Sacrifice

4/24/08, 11:30 am EST

Carly Smithson’s American Idol dreams were derailed last night, as the viewing public decided they were tired of her shouty power ballads and her crazy tattoo-faced husband. Ryan Seacrest seemed especially appauled by the decision, as Smithson’s take on “Superstar” was much-beloved amongst the judges on Andrew Lloyd Webber night. The results were padded by an all-Idols sing of a Phantom of the Opera tune, reprises of Smithson’s and fellow lowest-vote-getter Syesha Mercado’s songs from Tuesday night, check-ins with Tamyra Gray and Clay Aiken (and his creepy hair) on Broadway and a message from the President about Idol Gives Back. It had to be the jauntiest elimination in Idol history: Smithson seemed to be in relatively good spirits and there was no action at the Brooke White waterworks. Next week’s guest mentor is Neil Diamond, so the countdown to David Cook’s grunged-up version of “Sweet Caroline” can begin.

samantha sidley was far superior to any woman left in the competition and she didnt make the finals

I believe all of the contestants should be eliminated, then eliminate the judges, and eliminate the show entirely from the air. How about them apples?

Haha! Skippy Rules

This is just a popularity contest not a talent contest at this point. Viewer votes should only count for a portion of the decision of who gets voted off the island at this point in the game.

I’m not the biggest Smithson fan, but she and Mercado gave easily the two hottest performances on Tuesday … only to end up in the bottom two! Wow, this really is a pre-teen spur of the hour “beauty pageant,” or maybe some odd kind of reality comedy.

One wonders if Castro could stand on stage and just grin (and not sing at all) and still get voted through. Or whether Brooke’s votes go UP in direct proportion to her stops, mistakes, and “stunned looks.”

Smithson and Mercado handled their absurd bottom two placement with great grace and good humor. Hats off to both of them.

After the Wall Street Journal published its article about Carly Hennessey’s, now Smithson’s, $2 million bomb of a debut album way back when, I bought it out of curiosity. Sounding like a curious yet promising hybrid of Amy Grant and Cyndi Lauper, every song fell short in some way, lyrically, musically, production-wise, making the whole album feel impenetrable and disappointing. It wasn’t something I wanted to get into, although I hoped she would find success someday. Well, here she is. I’m not sure why American Idol flexed their rules so she could play, but I’m glad she’s out there now. Maybe she’s learned enough from her first album and this show I otherwise avoid so we can connect with her beautiful voice.

I can never figure out why people keep harping that AI is a popularity contest. GUESS WHAT, people? It’s a contest, and ALL contests are popularity contests – AI, the Emmys, the Oscars, the Grammys, the Country Music Awards, etc, etc, etc… Get over it!

All the teens seem to be voting for David Anchileta – he has an annoying, baby/teen voice and is never going to have longevity in the music buisness. Carly is amazing and I hope that she foolows in the footsteps of people like Chris Daughtry and goes on to rock the music biz! xx

Carly Smithson definitely had the best voice, and I thought she was going to win. I have always picked the winners before, and was stunned that she got voted off. I think the show is rigged this time, and every one else left on it is ammature and does not have a good voice. I think its also rigged so that David Archuleta will win because they give him good comments every week and all of his songs sound the same and don’t even stand out. Once again, Carly should have won, she had the best voice, she is the only person that any one would go see live anyway!

it’s appalled not appauled

Carly is really the best. Sadly “America voted”, so wrong.
Hope to hear her magnificent voice again and soon.
And about voters, what can we say… a majority always have the reason even when they are wrong?
