Nine Inch Nails Release Surprise Single to Radio, Announcement in “2 Weeks!”

4/22/08, 5:55 pm EST

The prolific Trent Reznor is back at it. Less than two months after web-releasing the instrumental Ghosts I-IV, Nine Inch Nails sent a brand new song, titled “Discipline,” to radio stations simultaneously around 2:30pm EST today. Reports say the song was just mastered yesterday. And unlike the Ghosts fare, this song actually contains Reznor on vocals. But here’s where things get strange: Venturing back over to nin.com, a post dated April 21st reads “2 weeks!” This “two week” message echoes a similarly mysterious message posted in mid-February that ultimately resulted in the release of Ghosts I-IV. Does Reznor have another new album up his sleeve to accompany “Discipline?” We’ll find out in thirteen days.

Clue on the 5 -

May 5th is the date two weeks from when the message went out that RS talks about above.

It’s great that Trent is so active now. Before, we’d have to wait five years to hear new material with the exception of the with teeth and year zero albums where the gap was two years. Maybe he’s making up for lost time or maybe he’s at a creative peak and wants to reward the fans who stuck by him. Whatever it is this is good news. Can’t wait to hear the new songs and album.

this is totally amazing. year zero, remix stuff, ghosts and now discipline. good times for nin fans. i’m counting days till the 2 weeks are over. trent shows the record industry, how to act fan-friendly. free-stuff, cheap downloads & deluxe editions! the right thing for everyone!

I downloaded the single and when playing it in Windows Media Player, it shows a picture of 5 black square with one circled in red with a red line starting from the square towards the right…wonder if it’s some sort of clue.

Trent’s been saying for awhile now, why should fans have to wait for months to hear new music when the music’s done? They finish a song on Monday, it hits radio on Tuesday and by late Tuesday, it’s available as a free download. Amazing.

I really like the new song. I can not wait to see them this summer and hear some of the songs from Year Zero and these new projects live
