Velvet Revolver to Launch Web Site to Recruit New Singer

4/21/08, 10:30 am EST

If Axl Rose wants back with his old Gn’R band mates, he’s going to have to do it the old-fashioned way: by auditioning over the Internet. Slash of the currently singer-less Velvet Revolver told Billboard that the band plans on setting up a Web site where potential vocalists will post video of themselves in hopes of swaying VR. “The band is actually talking about building a Web site [and] doing some auditions via that, so that’s been something that’s developing at this point,” Slash said of the site, which should be up “in the next month or so.” It’s like when Journey recruited a singer on YouTube, or Rock Star: Supernova without the television. Contrary to what Slash told RS last month, the guitarist said the band has no one specific in mind to fill the vacancy left by Scott Weiland’s departure. Velvet Revolver does have an upcoming gig in Las Vegas — a concert booked before Weiland’s exile — and will feature special guests taking turns at the microphone. No word whether Sebastian Bach has been invited.

I guess they’ll be the next band on the “Rockstar” show, if it hasn’t been cancelled.

Let’s call it like it is. Anyone who has paid attention to both STP and VR knows that Weiland belongs with STP, given that he can clean up his act, which he has been unable to do for how many years now? Weiland, we wish you the best. No offense Slash, because you rock, but as for VR the songwriting chops just aren’t there. Since GNR split all the band member’s careers have been mediocre at best. Izzy’s early success with the Ju Ju Hounds was promising, but when that fizzled all hope was lost. Damnit Axl, why did you have to become such a freak! Drop the BS, get your act together, and make some meaningful music again, and take Izzy with you. He was the backbone anyway. I think that a GNR reunion would be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but that’s wishful thinking. As for some humorous suggestions, and some not so, here’s a list of viable candidates. I’ll let you decide which are serious…

Kip Winger
the dude from Warrent
the dude from Jackyl
Chris Cornell
Constantine
Jason Bieler of Saigon Kick (very serious)

Oh right. I wanta be next singer of Velvet Reviver. I think I is one of the best singers all over the place and could fit in good with the band. I no sing in long time but I’m sure when they hear me on video they is going to likes me a lot! I have video of me in 1st grade singing “I’m a Little Teapot” to the whole school which I gonna put on there website. I am now 53 year old but rest of Velvet Reviver is old too so I fit in good. Only thing is I’m bald and weight 330 pounds but I no thinks that a problem because I sing really good! I can’t wait to post my video on there website because they will see that I have the talent, a lot more than that Scot Wiland guy. this gonna be so cool. I cant wait to be signer of this cool band.

Dave,

You sound like you’re making fun of the Chinese dialect. I’d be careful with that. I’m most likely going to lose my job at CNN for pulling the same stunt.

Sam | 4/21/2008, 4:39 pm EST

It’s this simple: GnR just lost their guitarist (Robin went back to NIN), VR just lost their singer. Both have the same management company, if I’m not mistaken (Irving Azoff). Chinese Democracy will NEVER live up to the hype…I’ve heard the best sounding leaks and it’s not bad…but it’s not gonna change the world. The best thing you can do, if you are Axl and not already negotiating this, is not delay the inevitable until AFTER your album bombs. Just get the original guys back for the tour, and then come out with another album in less than 2 years, or just hang it up.

Swingline | 4/21/2008, 5:09 pm EST

If GnR were to get back together and go back to 10 minute piano epics, better to not get together at all.
More than seeing the original members back on stage, I’d like to get that feeling hearing “Appetite” for the first time brought. If that’s with the original band, great. If some unknown comes in and gets that “Guns” attitude blazin again, it’s better than what’s been put out recently.

A full-on G N’ R reunion will NOT happen anytime soon. There’s just too much baggage, too many bad feelings, and it should be apparent to all that Axl is almost impossible to work with.

Just look at how many musicians he has burned through to record an album that took nearly 15 years to finish.

Axl’s a little too high maintanace, don’t you think?

No, VR will find a singer and Axl will yet again piece together another incarnation that will last 6 months.

MICFAC | 4/22/2008, 7:39 am EST

sam – velvet no longer have azoff as their manager so it wont happen that way – this audition thing sounds a bit desperate and it will surely be the last throw of the dice for velvet revolver – watch what happens if chinese democracy flops ill bet my house on it that axl and slash will share the same stage again in the future – money talks.

Looks like the search is over for Scott Weiland’s replacement. Jeffrey Light of Sanctuary Artist Management (Velvet Revolver’s high-power management team) announced earlier today that the lead singer of NYC based MEAN VENUS has already begun the process of taking over vocal duties. Known merely as “J”, Light says the MEAN VENUS front man has everything Weiland had and more. An accomplished songwriter in his own right, Velvet Revolver are excited to explore a somewhat new direction with the virtually unknown frontman.

KEVIN | 4/22/2008, 6:58 pm EST

Priscilla,

nice plug for your (extremely terrible) band, though i highly doubt slash and co. are THAT hard up for a singer. keep practicin though dude!

*shakes head in astonishment*

KEVIN | 4/25/2008, 9:15 am EST

I TAKE IT BACK THEY RULE

STP Rules | 4/25/2008, 9:33 pm EST

They sucked with a good singer and they’re going to suck even worse with some unknown. Sebastian Bach is beginning to sound like a good idea after reading this mess..

Max Abramson | 4/27/2008, 5:36 pm EST

I just wanted to see them in concert. I think that they just sign the best singer they can find and not worry about all the side issues and gossip.

LUKE55 | 5/5/2008, 5:15 pm EST

Does anyone know when and where the gig in vegas is going to take place. Any word let me know thanks

Angel Delcid | 5/26/2008, 4:32 am EST

bones337 | 2/6/2009, 5:01 pm EST

scott was and is great ignoring 90% of his solo indefer, and look look forward to the next stp album. i thought chris cornell would be the best choice but maybe it would be a case of history repeating itself. with vr style i think keith caputo would fit in nicely, close enough but not any emitation.

bones337 | 2/6/2009, 5:05 pm EST

camp freddy is the way there goin

Talking Tina | 2/17/2009, 12:36 am EST

I think the lead singer of the talking Heads or Midnight Oil would be a great fit for V.R.

Talking Tina | 2/17/2009, 2:05 am EST

Hey STP Rules. Why are you so closed minded even Sebastian Bach was unkown at one time. Give somebody new a chance!

days of destruction | 5/8/2009, 12:06 pm EST

A song written about GnR’s days from their beginnings in Hollywood at Rock N Roll hell on sycamore, to their situation they found themselves in around 2002 at club vodka when for the first time they had played as a band with Shooter Jennings as stand in.
The song although metaphoric in all its twists and turns, speaks of the smashing success of the appetite tour to the ho hum feelings of coming home from that tour and realizing that members had to change. (Adler)
Surviving the grunge movement, the oj trial and what riots and the decline of the sunset strip, did for the movement of grunge.
It embodies Axl’s serpentine movements, and his using the word nigger when his star guitar player Slash’s mother was african descent. No better song has been written about these guys nor do I think they ever really realized what the song meant. There isn’t any other singer out there thats got the genius and presence that this band so desperately needs, the edge has worn off of Rock, and silly putty cartoon comic imprint lyrics keep degrading the very essence of the greats that made Appetite for Destruction the Rock n Roll bible of a Hollywood lifestyle religion,,
Scott although quite the innovative parolier in his days with stone temple, never even came close to writing anything remotely edgy or insightful in his lyrics because his ego has made him jaded towards really looking within himself for edge.
Days of Destruction could have been a song that would have made every single guy formerly of GnR proud in Velvet Revolver, bcuz it had the guts and attitude that put Slash Duff and Axl into the households of the world. Undeniably great were the lyrics and music of GNR’s Appetite…and nothing but nothing could have been or will be the biggest mistake that Matt Duff n Slash over look the presence of the greatness behind the being that wrote the lyrics to Days of Destruction. They had him and they let him go seven years ago, now? They search for someone or something that they already found, the sad part? They just don’t realize he’s right there in his nights of candlelight…no power, no money, no bullshit, just pure rattlesnake skin talent raw and and as expolsive as the possibilties of a meteor the size of Los Angeles hitting the face of this planet, sending a shock wave into the homes of all the fans and leaving a dent in the music worlds mantle that not even a Curt Cobain or Mick Jagger or Axl Rose or who ever we think of when we think of the greats..
the men in VR2 need to go back and scan over what they missed, not search for what is missing. The past is a beginning of a beginninng, and all that they need to do is but the twilight of the dawn…Instinct w/ Intelligence….go back and listen to the song men…and let evolution of greatness once again be yours’
