Van Halen Relaunch Tour With Flashy, Hit-Laden Sin City Performance

4/21/08, 1:32 pm EST

When Van Halen last hit Vegas for a pair of shows in December, the group’s legendary guitarist was not doing too well. On the first night, despite his health history, Eddie Van Halen kept a cigarette affixed to his axe for easy access. Even more disconcertingly, fans noticed the guitarist was wobbly on his feet and took at least one embarrassing stumble during the concert.

Then last month Van Halen had to reschedule some shows so their rehabbed cancer survivor guitarist could undergo undisclosed medical tests. But the band made its triumphant return in Las Vegas on Saturday night, headlining Tiger Woods’ Tiger Jam, the golf icon’s annual charity concert. The veteran band was not taking anything for granted, either: a few hours before the show the band worked repeatedly sound checking “Hot for Teacher.”

“We are here to listen to one of the greatest bands in history,” Tiger Woods, the greatest golfer in history, announced to the audience. “It is my honor to introduce you to Van Halen.” There was no stumbling this time around. The set opened with a guitar squeal followed by a shirtless Eddie Van Halen looking great and leaping out from behind the curtain and into the familiar chords of “You Really Got Me.” Meanwhile, Diamond Dave and the boys were still hiding behind a black skrim awaiting the grand showbiz reveal. But that was Eddie Van Halen on this night: a player who couldn’t wait to get started, play more and milk each note from his guitar for two hours. He is back.

While David Lee Roth can’t seem to do anything with his voice but fall flat, the man was born to be a headliner in Vegas: Top hats! Outlandishly dated outfits! Roundhouse kicks! “I can not play golf for shit,” Roth told the crowd. “But I can ruin my knee with the pros.”

The 40-something audience enjoyed the run through the Van Halen double-barrelled greatest hits catalogue: “And The Cradle Will Rock…,” “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Beautiful Girls,” “Everybody Wants Some!!” and even the cover of “(Oh) Pretty Woman” from Diver Down. In all, Van Halen offered a great evening to be old and rich (top tickets were $200), with the profits going to help the young and poor. Everybody won — which in Vegas is normally an impossibility.

Cool. The greatest rock and roll circus lives to see another day.

Eddie Van Halen | 4/21/2008, 1:58 pm EST

Maybe you should learn the actual titles to my songs, Richard. I need a drink.

Metal Shawn G | 4/21/2008, 2:03 pm EST

Eddie’s too cool to sound like a snotty old spinster.

. . . And Ed’s gonna pass on the drink. Bub-bye

Metal Shawn G | 4/21/2008, 2:17 pm EST

WTF?

Kurt's Corpse | 4/21/2008, 2:20 pm EST

This band is a joke. Mike and Sammy are laughing on the beach…

Kurt's Corpse | 4/21/2008, 2:23 pm EST

Wolfgang is the absolute worst bassist in the history of Rock & Roll..

kdawg | 4/21/2008, 2:28 pm EST

Saw ‘em in Feb., they were awesome, and one things for sure: No one, and I mean NO ONE, has the guitar wizardry and genius of Eddie.

Diamond Dave | 4/21/2008, 2:41 pm EST

Kurt,

That’s a real knee-slapper, rigamortis boy. Mike and Sammy are on a beach and we’re up on stage rockin’ and gettin’ looks and laid by girls who wouldn’t give us the time of day, if we had any other job.

And you? You’re dead. You know why? Because you were a coward.

Diamond Dave | 4/21/2008, 2:46 pm EST

Man,

for a dead guy, Kurt, you’ve got a lot to say. Maybe a look in the mirror will sober you up some, my boy.

Steve | 4/21/2008, 2:54 pm EST

Lets just get the new album out boys. You’ve proven you can put your differences behind you and layout a mediocre tour. (That’s being polite). Now let the people hear what you are able to create in the studio. Personally that’s what I’m waiting for. The fact of the matter is if a band goes on tour without a new album than it just appears as a cash grab. A nostalgia trip. A last stab at some sort of recognition. Please prove me wrong and put out a nice, down and dirty album to put your fans at ease.

willie | 4/21/2008, 3:09 pm EST

Its great to see the band and master of the axe back on stage!!

Roscoe | 4/21/2008, 3:54 pm EST

I saw them back in 1978 for the first time. Will be going to the Cincy show 4/22 and hope like heck Dave’s crappy voice doesn’t ruin it for me…………hehehe

Diamond Dave | 4/21/2008, 4:16 pm EST

We have one new show and I’m a little rusty, and now I can’t sing?

Mediocre tour? How many shows have you been to? Probably zero.

See ya at the finish line boys and girls. VH is going to Light Up The Sky! We’re gonna scorch the earth; we will astonish you all!

Later from the equator, you masturbators.

fire woman | 4/21/2008, 4:31 pm EST

Like the bleach blonde thing, Ed. Lookin’ good, babe. Looks like you’re Back for the Attack!!!

David Lee Wimp | 4/21/2008, 4:47 pm EST

Eddie & Wolfie can’t hit the high noted like Mikey!

EVH | 4/21/2008, 4:49 pm EST

I admit this tour is not our best work..

Kurts Corpse | 4/21/2008, 4:54 pm EST

Eddie can’t stop drinking, and Wolfie looks like he’s about to join the 250 lb. club!

A105girl | 4/21/2008, 5:11 pm EST

Dave’s voice is stellar and the rest of the band are performing at their best. Nothing flat.
Mike and Sammy laughing? Perhaps nervously as this Tour continues to be in the #1 spot.
Van Halen/Roth Era….nothing short of SPOT ON.
Tour ‘07-’08 delivers.

DLR FOR PRESIDENT 2008 | 4/21/2008, 5:14 pm EST

DLR and EVH rule over the Little Red Retard and that other schmuck any day!! VH rocks once again!! I cannot wait for the new album, its gonna be awesome! Would be great to see “Girl Gone Bad” played live. As it is possibly the best guitar playing of all time besides Holdsworth…

Rusty Syringes | 4/21/2008, 5:28 pm EST

Kick ass!!!! Make a new album!

Mia | 4/21/2008, 6:12 pm EST

Love to hear EVH create new music. The old stuffs great but you can’t stop creating. If you don’t keep creating, the genius in you just eats you up alive. Ripping your very soul, breaking your spirit. Can’t play the same piece exactly the same. That’ll bore you to death as well. EVH is a genuis musically. Gotta to let his genius flow. Leading the way. It just pours out on it’s own. It sets you free from everything and everyone. The creative process isn’t enhanched by substances. Not really. Things sound great when you’re messed up but sure sound different straight. Would love to hear EVH create again. Keeping those fires of genius burnin’ and churnin’. Genius doesn’t go away with age. It doesn’t go away unless you toss it to the crub. EVH can’t do that. He’s gotta let that genius ROCK out! It’s like breathing. By the way some of you people out there are great fans waiting for a fall. What genius have you created recently or ever? It’s easy the criticize. Tearing things apart isn’t very hard It’s real easy. Try CREATING. Much different game. Also, cool is just BS. Music is what’s it’s all about. Playin’ to get laid is BS too. It’s still all about the Music. THE MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!That’s the genius. Do the genius and there’s no need for anything else even re-hab. It’s all BS. It’S the MUSIC. A plus would be some good lyrics. The voice being another musically instrument. Great band. Create!!!! Create!!!!
RUSH has been around for years and they’re still creating. EVH is not a god but man who happens to be a musical genius.

red-haired goddess | 4/21/2008, 6:30 pm EST

holy paragraph nightmare, batman.
i’ve gone blind in one eye!

whatever they do, whether they make a new album or just tour and that’s it, they’ve given memories that’ll last me a lifetime.

Eddie, second only to the Warlock Jimmy Page, is the greatest axeman ever.

And Kurt should just go away and cause a rain shower or something.

red-haired goddess | 4/21/2008, 6:40 pm EST

re: Mia | 4/21/2008, 6:12 pm EST

“By the way some of you people out there are great fans waiting for a fall. What genius have you created recently or ever? It’s easy the criticize. Tearing things apart isn’t very hard It’s real easy. Try CREATING.”

Oh, people, could we please stop with the “jealousy” argument non-sense?

Of course, we’re not like EVH. None of us are. But how is a statement like this even remotely useful?

Rockstars are in the limelight and some people are going to razz them a little bit. George Washington was mocked constantly in local newpapers. Shakespeare always made fun of kings.

Giving the kings a hard time has always part of human history. It’s always been that way, it’ll always be that way.

So just lose the “jealously” line. It’s old, predictable, and lacks deep thought.

greg | 4/21/2008, 6:48 pm EST

oo yeea 4-30 bayybayy!!!!!!!

Marty P. | 4/21/2008, 7:31 pm EST

Vegas was my 4th time seeing them on this tour. Great, great show, and this is coming from a doubter in the beginning. Awesome band in awesome form.

Kurts Corpse | 4/21/2008, 7:39 pm EST

3 weeks until Eddie falls off the wagon AGAIN….

Phantom Of The Paradise 1974 | 4/21/2008, 9:33 pm EST

Alright, I guess I understand about my handiwork. But I think it was a full-on scorched-earth colossal dis-fest that should be allowed to be seen . . . as a learning tool for others.

I believe in helping people.

Wayne | 4/21/2008, 9:42 pm EST

saw them 3 times this tour and am seein em again this week!!

kelli Denver, CO | 4/22/2008, 12:27 am EST

Eddie you are my hero…saw you in denver and you rock my world.. When I listen to Little Guitars..its like your in my head…you are and always will be the man!

kelli Denver, CO | 4/22/2008, 12:30 am EST

Eddie you rock my world.. you are truley the man…when I listen to little guitars its like your in my head.. saw you in concert 1984 it was incredible. “Dont you know that you can dance with me anytime? I love you Eddie

Steve Alexander | 4/22/2008, 12:46 am EST

VH are one of those bands you have to see live, I’ve seen every tour with Roth, and this is as good as any. If anything, the audience has chilled out, I remember Diver Down in Vancouver and it was insane. The sound is good, and Eddie was great in Vegas. It’s VH guys, it’s like Nascar, and the Roman Forum all rolled into one. This is feel-good rock, not rocket-science, just have a good time!

Ellen | 4/22/2008, 12:23 pm EST

I get to share the VH concert experience with my 11yr old son and 14yr old daughter tonight in Cincinnati. COOL!!!!!!! I have been looking forward to this since I heard the news of the reunion last year. LOTS of good memories of concerts past. VH is a part of my history. I’m lucky my kids are into the music and I can share this with them. We are especially looking forward to watching Wolfgang perform. My son is an up and coming guitarist. How cool to see a 16 year old in one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time! I know we won’t be disappointed.

Elvis knows best... | 4/22/2008, 12:57 pm EST

Spinning in my grave… We want our Sammy! VanHalen was better w/ the Red Rocker!!! Tour with Mike, Sammy, Wolfie, and Dave… give us the money shot.. We want it it all… we want it now!

Eat'em and Smile...Brown M&Ms | 4/22/2008, 1:26 pm EST

“This band is a joke. Mike and Sammy are laughing on the beach…”

Doubtful…the sold-out crowds is exactly where both of them want to be…and they are not…a few gigs at Cabo Wabo just doesn’t have the same thrill as 14,000 singing your songs word for word…

I saw them in Reno last thursday and I was skeptical…but damn if they didn’t rock hard…enough old school VH moments to make me raise my fist and say “hellya!” – Romeo’s Delight?? Atomic Punk?? Mikey is crying not being on the stage playing those songs and the amazing energy of timeless music…

Moreover, DD and the Boys are waving at Sammy on the way to the Bank!!!

…plenty of time for the beach when the tour is over.

Dave | 4/22/2008, 4:30 pm EST

That’s disgusting. And pathetic.

No, not this dream-come-true reunion between Diamond Dave and King Edward. I meant these so-called ‘Van Halen fans’ who want to see Sammy and Mike back in the band. You have the proverbial wool covered quite well over your eyes not to appreciate this enormous gift to music. Arguably the biggest reunion since KISS, and all you putzes and schmucks can comment on is how you miss Sammy and Mike. Scrue yue, you’re all remarkably pathetic. Wolfgang kicks Mike’s ass, that’s the truth. And as far as Sammy goes, if you like sheepdogs that dress like Ronald McDonald, shriek like Yoko Ohno, and a mouth bigger than Rosie O’Donnell…then yeah, they’re both better off together.
Diamond Dave and King Edward reunited will remain undefeated, especially with Van Halen being the most family-oriented that they’ve ever been. The Other Half? How the hell does that make any sense when there’s 3 quarters original band members touring under the mighty Van Halen name right now, huh? And Wolfie is his father’s son, so we have a double-barrage of heavy artillery – talk about weapons of mass destruction!

Any so-called ‘Van Halen fan’ that wants to see/hear the unappreciative loud-mouths more commonly known as Sammy and Mike ‘reunite’ with Dave n’ Ed are not only dellusional, they’re certifiably stupid.

And you can quote me on that.

BOW ZEE BOW ZEE BOP ZITTY BOP!

M. Anthony | 4/22/2008, 10:11 pm EST

Brown M&M’s, or Dirt Cowboy Roth?

Band is a JOKE. Why don’t you change up your set list? Gee….I dunno….maybe because they’ve programmed in the piped in backing vocals, keyboards, and extra guitar??

Wolfie kicks Mike’s ass? In what…..an eating competition???

Get out of the past people….where were all you die-hards in ‘98?? For that pathetic, piece of crap tour with Cherone???

Nate Dawg | 4/22/2008, 10:20 pm EST

Band sucks……nuff said….

Nancy Powasnick | 4/23/2008, 12:29 am EST

I saw the concert in Houston in Jan.08, I fell in love with Eddie Van Halen all over again, which was fun since I was with my daughter. I was impressed by the strength of the whole performance, the love behind all the performers for what they were giving the audience was felt by everyone, as we left the building, there was a genuine buzz of excitement and regret it was over…what else can I say, it was an awesome bonding experience for my daughter & I, and just wish we could do it again!!!

This is not what you think !! | 4/23/2008, 1:12 am EST

OK…let me start of by saying to everyone that this band sounds tight..they sound fantastic…Dave and Eddie SEEM to be getting along BUT I was backstage in Vegas chatting with the roadies that travel day in and day out with these guys and when the concert ended….Eddie was shuffled out the door immediately to a waiting car to head to the airport by himself and Dave walked sheepishly behind him and went to a dressing room by himself without so much as a glance at each other . Not only that ….Dave travels BY BUS while the rest travel by plane…WEIRD…..the driver for Dave tells me they CAN”T STAND EACH OTHER AND THEIR ONLY DOING THIS FOR THE MONEY….sad but true….this band will dry up after this tour so my advice to everyone who truly loves Van Halen…..get out their and watch this show because it will never happen again……….

Ski Dog 1981 | 4/23/2008, 8:18 am EST

Been waiting 27 years to finally see the band that scorched my world with original compositions not seen since the late 60’s. Rock on VH!!!!

Scott Blugrind | 4/23/2008, 9:59 am EST

I saw the Vegas show and it was killer. Eddie looked like he was health. He even put on a few pounds. Good for him. Dave was great as usual. Alex seemed to be getting used to the click tracks. I saw the tour twice in Los Angeles and Alex was off the click especially on Hot For Teacher. He nailed it in Vegas. The extra practice at sound check must have helped. The band were all smiles after they got it right so it is funny to hear they practiced what I was concerned about too. The only thing that was missing is Mike Anthony. Wolfie plays o.k. put he has zero stage presence. Dave tried to play off of Wolf on stage and Wolf walked backwards up the stage ramp to avoid him several times. He even seems distant from Eddie on stage. Wolfgang seems like a teenage at the adults dinner table who is board and wants to go up to his room and play video games. Mike was there in the day. Van Halen is about “back in the day” I hope the next tour will be a full reunion.

Avid VH FAN. Have been to two shows this tour attending another in Providence soon. If you read this EVH, request for Light Up The Sky

Anyone knocking them for doing
this tour is dead wrong.
Let them Rock it out. Maybe we
will get lucky and get a new
recording out of it.

Mikey is missed, though.
Everyone should pull it together
and get the last recording done.

VH KNOWS HOW TO PLAY THE GAME.ITS ALL BUSINESS AND THEIR NAME,NOW DAVE IS THE HIRED HELP. I SAW THEM AT NASSAU COLESIUM AND ON YOUTUBE….YOU CAN SEE AND FEEL THE ANIMOSITY. OH WELL, THEY STILL MADE HISTORY IN ROCK N ROLL.GREAT RECORDS W/SAM OR DAVE

.Com.br | 4/24/2008, 11:33 am EST

When I was too young to go to a rock ‘n roll concert, the band, came to Brazil in 1983. And they never came again…..
So I’m going to USA to see the VH Concert
Waiting 25 years to see the band.
I know is going to be great.
For me they don’t have to be friends to do a great performance. It’s like other jobs, sometimes you don’t like to work besides somebody, but you have to.
But, really, I think that there are lots of gossips, that are very good for the press agency that works for them.

Peter North | 4/24/2008, 11:50 am EST

Can’t we all just get along? I never got along with any of my thousands of “co-stars”, but the end product speaks for itself.

A disfunctional VH with Roth beats the hell out of a happy Van Hagar.

Has anyone seen my Vitamin E?

Which of you is telling the truth? Who cares! I boycotted this tour. Ed blew our chance at a Real Reunion Tour. I’m still up for breakfast, just not for another one of Eddie’s fan letdowns.

Steve Behrens | 4/30/2008, 2:09 pm EST

Way to be, Van Halo. You did biz’ and you layed low and then you returned, so, now I know- you have acumen from fans I learned. So like a flower and the sun you’re still bloomin’. The sun is your guitar and you’re the flower-star! Like your ax we ne’r grow old, a monkey ne’r will relax and stay a shiney gold.

Wait! Van Halen’s on tour?! Freaking fantastic! When do tickets go on sale? Man. This is gonna be great!

god of rock | 5/13/2008, 1:31 pm EST

DLR asked for the fans to judge them harshly, and I’ve read a lot of ugly things about the new VH.There’s room for both DLR and SH fans. Unfortunately the new VH only has room for one great singer and it’s a different band now after the many years apart. I say anyone who cares about rock n roll and has done something to make it better deserves some slack from the fans. Will every performance from VH be the greatest we’ve ever seen? Probably not and even Dave knows the energy will be different from one city to another which effects the perception of how they did. Unless you just can’t like DLR up front, you won’t be dissapointed. Long live the new VH.

Seagalfan7 | 5/21/2008, 7:59 pm EST

The following retards can lick male behind. Nate Dawg, Scott Bluegrind, Jo Jo Bordon, M. Anthony, Elvis knows best and all the other anuses that have derogatory comments for V. H.. You dudes don’t know your a__ from a hole in the ground. Right on DAVE. Very intelligent remarks. The rest of you negative sh_it heads, go to hell.

The_enabler | 5/24/2008, 4:39 pm EST

Saw them again at Mohegan Sun – May 20th. The place was packed and no one was disappointed until they stopped playing. They were much better than last October and Dave’s vocals were spot on. Too bad Eddie left his shirt on. It was fantastic and they are hotter than ever. I haven’t seen too many 53 year olds who can look like that, move like that, or sound like that — quite frankly — I haven’t seen too my young guys look like that either. Everyone there loved them!

Gerbil | 5/25/2008, 3:09 am EST

Thanks, Ed.

I have always loved that, uh, rock band, Van Walen! Thanks for stopping by. Now, I just gotta go out and hit another bucket of balls. My golf fans await. Again, thanks for stopping by. TW

I look bad in a yellow shirt. And I refuse to be the guy at the concert wearing the concert tee-shirt. That said, Las Vegas rocked. The time was wrong for me, but the music was just right. Again. I love VH music.

Hope the orig-VH get it together. :)

Rick Berdeski | 6/1/2008, 2:09 pm EST

I live and breathe this band…for the love of sweet baby Jesus, get into the studio guys and knock us out with a 12 track CD Then come back and play smaller venues, these 20K seaters are too big!

vanfanfan4life65 | 12/6/2008, 7:03 pm EST

I live in an area where the big name people rarely come. i saw vanhalen only once so far. but i have heard everything they ever recorded. i can’t wait to hear any new music by the band. the concert by cherone was an absolute delight everyone on stage look liked they were having fun. to bad it was the last of the original linup.(eddie ,(dave was where?) mike and alex where awesome. rock on guys. if you tour again. please come to albany,ny .your fan for life.

vanfan4life65 | 12/10/2008, 11:09 am EST

i have loved vanhalen since day one. i just hope the hard feelings of the past won’t resurface and kill this amazing band. i know the music business is that a business. but 200 buck a ticket you got to be kidding me. put out a box set. already please
