Akon’s Imagination More “Konvicted” Than Akon

4/17/08, 12:30 pm EST

According to an investigation by website The Smoking Gun, R&B crooner Akon has exaggerated the criminal past that inspired singles like “Locked Up” and the album Konvicted. Among the singer’s claims is that he was once the kingpin of a car theft operation and that he spent four-and-a-half years in the prison after being ratted out. Not true, says TSG. Akon did spend time in a Georgia prison, but it was only for a few months. And he wasn’t arrested for being a ringleader of a car theft operation or because he was ratted out; rather, he was pulled over for driving a BMW that was previously stolen by someone else. It was also discovered that “Locked Up” was not written in prison (as Akon purported) and that the singer also sired a child with a college student while he was supposedly in jail. Neither Akon’s publicist nor business manager have replied to the TSG report.

Akon was in prison, in fact he was my cell mate for 2 years. I used to “f” him every night. That boy can move real good.

Street cred | 4/17/2008, 11:59 pm EST

I’m sure he’s not the only one to imbellish his “run ins with the law” to try to get street cred. I wonder how many other rappers/r&b acts who rap/sing about the hood, selling drugs, gangs, and incarceration have ever actually lived that life (or are being completely honest in the details). Record execs know that the “bad boy” image even if it’s a hoax will sell to adolescents. Also, it’s hard to take guys like ice cube, ice tea, and snoop dogg seriously when they talk about the hood and 187’s, etc etc. Cmon man. Cube is a family film actor. Ice tea who once rapped about killing cops is now playing a cop on tv. and snoop wants to be percieved as a family man. They are living in mansions not the hood so it’s just not believable listening to their “hardcore” stories anymore. There once was a rule in music. Write what you know. Now it’s just write to sell records. What a shame.
