Motley Crue Unveil Crue Fest Summer Tour, New LP and Video Plans

4/16/08, 8:55 am EST

In what can only be dubbed the loudest press conference on Earth, the four original members of Mötley Crüe unveiled plans for their first ever Crüe Fest national rock tour and their first studio album together in ten years, Saints of Los Angeles, to a packed Avalon in Hollywood Tuesday afternoon. The forty-one-city North American Crüe Fest kicks off July 1st in West Palm Beach, Florida, with some of the band’s favorite younger rock bands along for the ride: Buckcherry, Papa Roach, Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx’s other band Sixx: A.M., and Trapt. Taking a page out of the Warped Tour’s book, Crue Fest will also offer up low price ticket packages starting at $30.

“Hopefully this thing transpires into somewhat of an Ozzfest and carries on for years and years and years,” drummer Tommy Lee said to a roaring crowd of fans, friends (including Sixx’s new girlfriend, L.A. Ink star Kat Von D.), and media, “which would be badass. And I could tell you one thing for sure, we are gonna have more fun than humans are allowed to fucking have!”

“We were also looking for bands that lived the rock and roll lifestyle because that’s what we’re taking around the country is rock and roll and the lifestyle,” Sixx said at the press conference. “And they all look and smell and, I imagine some of you will find out, will taste like rock stars.” On touring with a crew of younger bands, guitarist Mick Mars quipped, “I feel really old.” Later Mars, who has suffered from the degenerative bone condition Ankylosing Spondylitis, explained his comment to Rolling Stone: “No one was saying anything, so I had to say something. But, really, I feel really good these days. I am a comedian inside — a black comedian.”

Saints of Los Angeles, due June 17th on Mötley Records, harkens back to the early days of the Crüe — as does the black-and-white video for the title track, complete with scenes from the Sunset Strip, groupies and rock & roll decadence. Singer Vince Neil explains, “It represents us, Mötley Crüe, growing up in Los Angeles and the sights, sounds, and smells of Los Angeles. The songs are amazing. The stories are amazing. The songs are kind of based on stories in [the band’s best-selling memoir] The Dirt…” One thing fans will have to wait a little longer for is the movie version of The Dirt, which is being produced by MTV. “It’s still taking a while. MTV doesn’t really have their shit together. We don’t like to do anything half-ass so there’s been conflict on how to do it right,” Sixx tells us.

“We wanted to do a raw, dirty, rock and roll record. It was easy. I don’t think it sounds dated. It’s like new, dirty, rock and roll Mötley Crüe,” Sixx tells Rolling Stone of the band’s first studio album together in ten years. (For a full Q&A with Sixx about the record, click here.)

The band capped off the press conference with a two-song set — an oldie, “Kickstart My Heart” and the new single, “Saints of Los Angeles,” which features the singers of all of the opening bands on backing vocals and in the video.

Arch Stanton | 4/22/2008, 2:26 pm EST

Ive seen the Crue 7 times and enjoyed each one. What i meant was some of their fans (Big Nasty)ruin it for the rest of us. I would love to hear your band. Probably as creative as Jonas Brothers. Keep dreaming of the past. but Kurt is still the God of Rock.

Gt | 4/22/2008, 9:16 am EST

I heard that.Plus, where the hell did this comparison of Crue vrs Jane’s come from? Its time for a new dumb comparison. How about Crash test dummies vrs Wall of voodoo!

misscyn | 4/21/2008, 11:50 pm EST

Wow! The amount of anger about a summer rock concert is amazing. One of the best things about America is that If you dont like it, you have other options. Music is Music. There is a band for everyone. If you hate the Crue so much, why waste the time writing a comment that none of them will read anyways? For all the rest, crack a beer and enjoy the show! Cause you know Motley ALWAYS puts on a great one!

Arch Stanton is a loser | 4/21/2008, 9:47 am EST

hey Arch Stanton….sorry we cant all be as all knowing as you. Does it bother you that the Crue never needed you as a fan? your very very irrelevant in that aspect and probably many other aspects. Get over it. millions of people like them. can you count on your fingers the people that like you? thats what i thought….

BIG NASTY | 4/21/2008, 9:30 am EST

ALRIGHT ARCH YOU’VE CALLED ME OUT…HERE I AM BRO…PLEASE CANCEL YOUR SUBSCRIPTION…ONE LESS DOCHEB*** TO WORRY ABOUT…YOU’VE MADE FUN OF MY GIRL…YOU’VE MADE FUN OF MY BAND…HELL YOU EVEN MADE FUN OF MY BUS…WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT YOU THOUGH? Opinions Vary | 4/20/2008, 1:29 pm EST

Crue led the heavy metal scene in the eighties. They’re still together and putting out new albums today. Janes may have some influence, but you say they’re for the people. Crue has had three platinum albums. How many have Janes had? They may be playing for the people, but the people don’t seem to be listening.

Sonic Templar | 4/20/2008, 5:07 am EST

Oh Please… Let’s clear something up.This BS that Nirvana killed Hair Metal. They did’nt kill shit. You young ass panty wastes read that dumb ass shit in a magazine and bought it.If you were around, you would know that by 1990, That scene was on it’s death bed ANYWAY.It’s true prime was 81 to MAYBE the end of 85, and needed to end. FACT.

Rocka Rolla | 4/20/2008, 4:48 am EST

I wonder who the Red Headed Whore likes? All this emo vomit I’m plenty sure.

motley who | 4/19/2008, 4:12 pm EST

Listen to kirk all you jane haters,
“There is no point in comparing Jane’s Addiction and Motley Crue. I like both but everybody knows that Jane’s Addiction is far more influencial and respected.”

ocean size | 4/19/2008, 4:07 pm EST

Let’s not forget that after vince neil left motley crue, the band came back in 1994 with a new singer, album, and “harder edge” that was a blatant rip off of the grunge/alternative scene. Even the band knew that they were no longer relevant. So what did they do to try to become relevant again? Latch onto what’s popular at the time. In the 80’s they rode the coattails of hair metal and in ’94 they rode the coattails of grunge and alternative music. Yet they failed miserably. Jane’s addiction, porno for pyros, satellite party all are fearless records. Perry made the music that he wanted to make and if people liked it, great if not then at least he expanded his creativity. With perry, you have something to look forward to whereas motley crue plays the same notes and tries to sell the past. Motley crue is not and will never be and original, relevant, or influential band.

motley who | 4/19/2008, 3:57 pm EST

There’s no denying that Jane’s Addiction is and always will be far more influential than some hair metal band from the 80’s by the name of motley crue. In case you haven’t noticed, jane’s addiction boldly chose to pave their own path when it would have been so easy to be a hair metal band in the LA Scene. They didn’t follow the crowd or seek to be MTV darlings, they brought the music up from the fringes to a whole new audience.
Nirvana and Jane’s Addiction killed your hair metal scene. Real music always gets to the people and exposes the gimmick artists like motley crue, poison, and all the other hair bands. Maybe that’s why you’re so defensive.

Arch Stanton | 4/19/2008, 12:36 pm EST

Big nasty. I just canceled my subscription. If trash like u read this mag iam out. Tommy lee on his worst day probably passed on his worst chick to a roadie that would outclass your girlfriend.or maybe it was your girlfriend. Sorry pal but the Crue suck. Go remember your Bus rides. It was probably a short bus anyways.

chad. | 4/19/2008, 10:49 am EST

they’re excitable little shih-tzu’s, they are. it’s too bad nobody else is except about 40 million people.

Kirk | 4/19/2008, 5:14 am EST

It’s nice that they are back but the new song is really bad…
There is no point in comparing Jane’s Addiction and Motley Crue. I like both but everybody knows that Jane’s Addiction is far more influencial and respected. Just enjoy the tour or if you are not interested don’t go. It’s just that easy.

rockstar70 | 4/19/2008, 12:57 am EST

It’s funny how everyone lists the sexpistols as an influence but they only went platinum in 1994. To be considered great by a few fans and a handful of critics is not the test of true rock n roll. To be adored by millions that wait many years just to battle it out with you guys over who is better is the test of a true band and a true fan. TRUST ME….Motley knows more, has been true more, and no matter what the books say, has had just as much or more that Janes’ will ever have!!!

motley who | 4/18/2008, 10:18 pm EST

Motley was not ahead of their time in the 80’s and their just trying to duplicate their heyday now. Just a band people. nothing to get excited about. And as far as sell out, rock star 70 is clueless. ANybody can sell merchandise when they have to televise their every move. Jane’s is for the people. They don’t need to degrade their fans. They respect their fans and their influence is far greater than any flash in the pan motley crue. We’ve seen time and time again that records sold can not compete with influence. Take sex pistols. Their influence is still felt today and are monumental in punk rock history yet they only lasted one album. Thirty years later, their still cited as influences by rock artists and fans and we’re inducted into the rock hall of fame. Motley crue will only be a footnote in the hair metal scene of the 80’s. Jane’s addiction revolutionized the sound of rock and brought alternative to a whole new audience and will be the sex pistols of this era. Motley crue, record sold or not, will always merely be a footnote in rock and roll. You guys just have to face that truth. Jane’s addiction has a legacy as rock revolutionaries. Motley’s legacy is a joke. Deal with it!!!

BIG NASTY | 4/18/2008, 12:27 pm EST

FOR SOME OF US MOTLEY FANS, THEM GETTING BACK TOGETHER IS NOT JUST 4 GUYS IN THERE LATE 40′S PLAYING MUSIC. IT’S A WAY FOR US AS FANS TO RECONNECT WITH OUR YOUTH AND REMEMBER “THE GOOD OLD DAYS” OF SITTING AROUND AT A PARTY AND CHECKING OUT CHICKS, OR SITTING ON THE TEAM BUS WAITING TO GO TO A FOOTBALL GAME, WITH KICK START MY HEART BLARRING THRU THE HEADPHONES OF MY WALKMAN. NOTHING COULD GET ME PUMPED UP LIKE THAT! FOR SOME OF US IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE MUSIC, BUT IT’S ABOUT THE WAY IT MAKES US FEEL. ROCK ON CRUE. ROCK ON UNTIL IM 60 YEARS OLD. BY DOING THAT… I’LL ALWAYS BE ABLE TO GO BACK TO THAT FEELING I HAD ON THAT BUS WHEN I WAS A KID.

Girls Girls Girls is my favorite Album.

rockstar70 | 4/18/2008, 9:55 am EST

How many Albums have Motley sold….50 million. How many have Janes’ sold…maybe 10 million. How many books has Perry written that were on the New York Times best seller list….NONE. That would be two books for Nikki!!
Talk about sissy……who bailed out of the festival(lollapoloza) the he created because METALLICA got the bid to headline. PERRY is a WHUSS!!

rockstar70 | 4/18/2008, 9:49 am EST

Let’s not forget that Dave Navarro was right there with Tommy in Rockstar Supernova and Spearheaded ROCKSTAR INXS. Mybe Perry and Dave can have their own version of ROCK of LOVE next season. What was the name of Dave and Carmen’s reality show I forget???

girls girls girls | 4/17/2008, 11:45 pm EST

The members of motley crue are the ultimate sellouts! They have to televise everything they do because they fear their dwindling fan base may forget them. There are people that don’t need to be on tv to promote themselves in reality shows. I wonder who? Oh yeah, perry farrell. HE doesn’t need to whore himself out on tv and televise every step. Seems motley crue are just sissies. They’re GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS!!

motley who | 4/17/2008, 11:23 pm EST

Not a sellout huh? Anybody remember tommy lee’s sad attempt at reviving his career through reality tv:
Tommy Lee Goes To college
and Rock Star Supernova
and what about vince neil for a vhl plastic surgery show?
and of course nikki sixx on tv with his “look at me i kicked drugs project” heroin diaries and of course the whole band whoring themselves out on tv in a “reunion attempt” on vhl. I guess they don’t have the gonads to get back together by talking to one another in private. THey have to whore themselves out for attention. Motley crue, not a sellout? yeah right.

Rockstar70 | 4/17/2008, 3:33 pm EST

I wonder which of the Motley shows I should go to??? I would go see Janes Addiction but they only have one show……not to worry guys Football season is just around the corner!!!

Rockstar70 | 4/17/2008, 3:14 pm EST

I listen to Perry Farrell…that Monday night football commercial used to come on all the time. The Crue maybe talentless but unlike “THE GODFATHER OF ALTERNATIVE” at least they aren’t a SELLOUT!!

Rockstar70 | 4/17/2008, 3:14 pm EST

Joe | 4/17/2008, 1:34 pm EST

Hey Kurt’s Corpse,
You had a great run for a couple of years but you did not come close to the Crue. Only reason why you were such a success for a few years in the early 90’s is because the industry became watered down with shitty bands trying to copy the Crue. BTW, good job blowing your brains out…you would have been another whinny prick like Lennon.

Big Nasty | 4/17/2008, 10:10 am EST

Motley Crue will single handedly revive Rock-n-Roll… They are the best band from the 80’s. They will do what Aerosmith did, but Motley wont totally sell out…by the way how did you know I didnt have a remote for my T.V.?

Fact Checker | 4/17/2008, 9:05 am EST

Their Carnival of Sins Tour in 2006 was listed on Billboard as the 5th highest grossing tour of that year. It was also the only tour in top ten to have ticket prices avg. under $50. People love Motley and always will so be strong and shout at the devil.

Real Rock | 4/17/2008, 12:39 am EST

all you haters must really be a bore… go throw on neon bible and drink some overpriced microbrew while i drink some cheap beer and celebrate sex drugs and rock and roll. brush that chip from your shoulder and you might find out its ok to have a good time some of the time.

Real Rock | 4/17/2008, 12:35 am EST

According to the rockstar 70, “The CRUE coming back is a God sent.” yet perry farrell in another post he refered to as a tard. What’s that all about. Jane’s addiction is where it’s at not some washed up no talentless hair metal band from the ’80s. Seem the only tard is rock star 70. You could listen to mind numbing hair metal or perry farrell, the godfather of alternative rock and leader of one of the most influential bands in rock and roll history. You decide.

MrSmile30 | 4/16/2008, 11:27 pm EST

Where is Montreal ? I mean they rocked us bad the last time. I wish they would come. Imagine an expecting father coming home after a Crue concert… Just don’t come between august 20 and september 1st. HA HA HA !!!

Rocka Rolla | 4/16/2008, 9:27 pm EST

I Could take or leave MC, go ahead and slam them if you like. DO NOT SLAM THE 80’s. The music scene then could fart and the underwear stain would be ten times greater than today’s music. FACT

When I got to the word “Nirvana”, I stopped reading.

Arch Stanton | 4/16/2008, 8:01 pm EST

Big Nasty probably has to get up to turn the channel. Trailer trash fool. Get some HD and put on Nirvana and grow up and you might find a real woman that others wont laugh behind your back when your walking down the street. get a life….

Crue is the best F*ck the rest | 4/16/2008, 7:37 pm EST

You who diss the Crue should be hanged by your scrotum - the mere fact that you have to negatively comment on the baddest rock ‘n roll band ever makes me think you never got laid in the 80’s. That, or your wee wee is half the size of Tommy’s.

“MOTLEY CRUE WAS AND IS WAY AHEAD OF THEIR TIME”

Yeah right. I guess 25 years from now we’ll still be listening to such gems like “Smoking In the Boys Room” or “Home Sweet Home.” Who are you kidding. I think Led Zeppelin are shaking in their boots right now. They’re afraid Motley Crue will dethrone them as the band that posterity will most remember. What a joke.
