News Ticker: Matchbox Twenty, Britney Spears, Ted Nugent

4/14/08, 9:20 am EST

  • Matchbox Twenty have cancelled their July 18th performance at the world’s biggest outdoor rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days, because they don’t want to “[make] money from…the mistreatment of animals.”
  • Britney Spears was involved in a minor car accident Saturday night. No one reported injuries, and police did not issue any tickets.
  • Noel Gallagher says it’s “wrong” that U.K.’s Glastonbury Festival has booked Jay-Z as this year’s headliner, offering the hip-hop headliner as explanation for why tickets haven’t sold out yet.
  • In a guest column for the Waco Tribune-Herald, Ted Nugent says he’s been working with New Mexico’s governor on a “Ted Nugent Spirit of New Mexico” outdoors show that will “be the perfect movie for the whole family” when it hits theaters this fall.

Noel’s completely right on this one. Glastonbury’s not a hip-hop festival, there are separate events for that genre of music. As he said, why try to change something that’s been so successful for so long?

Brien Comerford | 4/14/2008, 11:44 am EST

Ted Nugent glorifies firearms, hunting and cruelty against animals. He’s rife with irreverence for life.

Sanchez | 4/14/2008, 1:00 pm EST

How about Matchbox cancels the whole tour? Fuck off.

wrecksracer | 4/14/2008, 1:03 pm EST

I’m not a Ted Nugent supporter, but if you buy meat at a supermarket, that animal was treated more cruelly than anything Ted Nugent shot.

Matchbox Twenty Fan | 4/14/2008, 5:49 pm EST

I love Matchbox Twenty and am so happy to find out that they care about animals enough to cancel a performance at a venue where animals are abused. …And I thought I couldn’t like them more than I already did! :)

Swingline | 4/14/2008, 6:05 pm EST

In a related story, the animals at the rodeo found out Matchbox Twenty was gonna play and decided to boycott.
They didn’t want to be somewhere where people make money off the mistreatment of music.

Steel Dragon in Texas | 4/14/2008, 9:09 pm EST

Rodeos are definitely not mis-treating animals! I get sick of hearing about this crap. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is one of the largest in the world, and DOES NOT get picketed by PETA, or any other animal group. Why? Because there is no mis-treatment of animals in any way. Animals are glorified, taken care of better than most humans are and the kid’s that participate in the rodeo and livestock raising are/will become the future of vet sciences, which is an area of medicine that is grossly undermanned. So before anyone opens their mouth on this, do your research.

As far as Matchbox Twenty goes, WHO CARES. All that jack ass wants is more free publicity to sell albums. Every time a celebrity or “D lister” as I would call Rob Thomas gets behind something it is for a purpose that is usually NOT the purpose they are intending, but simply as a means for them to make more money.

charles darwin | 4/14/2008, 11:19 pm EST

If you want equality between man and cattle, Rob, you should get in the ring with a bull.

you’ll see how much HE believes in equal rights for people and animals. All he’ll be thinking about is how rip your head off and shit down your neck!

He couldn’t give a fuck about your compassion!

survival of the fittest, baby. that’s the way it has always been, that’s the way it will always be.

I know you say you believe in evolution, but do you TRULY BELIEVE in it? Do you what the word REALLY means? Probably not.

The animals don’t hold it against us humans, Rob. So then WHO ARE YOU to do so???

Leopard Lady | 4/15/2008, 12:45 am EST

To those people who do not see anything wrong with the treatment of animals in rodeo’s, let me shock you with 1500 volts in your face and see how you like it.

dick hedley | 4/15/2008, 2:48 am EST

Rodeos are for inbreeds.

Bea Brinkley | 4/15/2008, 3:03 am EST

Anybody earning their money on the abuse of animals, such as Rodeo, should be banned from working with animals. Those “cowboys” are nothing but cowards, that don’t know how to earn a decent income with a decent job. They are bludgers, usually on the doll or on the borrowing spree to their friends. The one thing they are for sure are abusive to anybody, that does say something against Rodeo’s.
And what are you actually trying to prove with a rodeo? That it is fun to abuse animals??? Nice family entertainment.
This is from Australia, Rodeo is getting a hard time here too. We don’t need that sort of abusive entertainment. And by the looks of empty places at Rodeo’s, it seems to be working. Good on you Steve Hindi, I admire you. Please keep going and spread the news, you have a lot of helpers with that, around the world, Bea

angelou | 4/15/2008, 6:33 am EST

Glad they had the intelligence and integrity to realise that making money from the shameful abuse of animals is NOT the way to go!
Friends of mine are cameramen who took hundreds of hours of footage of shocking cruelty for an ongoing series of TV programmes on rodeo abuse – it was unbearable to watch, and what I did see haunted me for a very long time to come.It really opened my eyes to just how cruel rodeos are,and many viewers had the same reaction.

All-Animals-LOVER | 4/15/2008, 7:03 am EST

Rodeos are for primitive and ignorant people, who have nothing useful to do in life, than to torture and kill the poor animals. This is disgusting and sick. Going against the Gods creation, you are going agianst yourselves. Cruel people have no place in this world!

Jocelyn Koopmann | 4/15/2008, 8:41 am EST

Animal cruelty. Thats what Roedo’s are. You can swear your heads off, say what you like to try and cover it up. But that’s what they are. Electric starters in horses necks & rumps. The poor calves run into the ground. If the Roedo people like it so much, they can use each other. Enjoy them selves & your mates wont mind. Isn’t that sweet.

Annie | 4/15/2008, 8:46 am EST

Rideos are for animal abusing pussies. Real men don’t need to torture animals by poking, proding and straps so tight they cut off the animals’ circulation. You go Rob Thomas, a real man!!!

Joycey Berry | 4/15/2008, 9:17 am EST

Thank You Matchbox Twenty for cancelling having a rodeo there. You did the right thing. More and more people are not attending these cruel events because they now realize what is really happening at them. The animals are tortured and who wants to pay to see that. They should just be banned. I will not ever attend one.

Marian E. | 4/15/2008, 9:21 am EST

Kudos!!! Matchbox really rocks!

sweetdog 69 | 4/15/2008, 10:49 am EST

The abuse of animals for human entertainment is cruel.
Why not just let some K1 fighters entertain the people?
They have a choice if there going to fight or not, animals don’t have a choice, and they can’t speak out for them selfs , thats up to us!!

Trudi Reijnders | 4/15/2008, 10:51 am EST

Happy to see Matchbox Twenty shows they do not want to have anything to do with animalcruelty.

Marcy M. | 4/15/2008, 11:27 am EST

Kudos to Matchbox20! I was thrilled to hear their decision to not perform at the hands of animal cruelty. THANK YOU for doing the right thing! Always a fan, now always will be. Unfortunately, I cannot say that for Bon Jovi who played at this rodeo last year, regardless of all the animal cruelty this event produces.

margaret H. | 4/15/2008, 11:28 am EST

They went to the top of my chart :) )))))))

cara | 4/15/2008, 11:54 am EST

“To those people who do not see anything wrong with the treatment of animals in rodeo’s, let me shock you with 1500 volts in your face and see how you like it.”

You first. I’ll go after I’m done eating this juicy steak!

Kathy | 4/16/2008, 12:14 am EST

I don’t go to rodeos, but if I did I’d be sitting there rooting for the horses and the bulls:)

Hilke | 4/16/2008, 2:00 am EST

IT IS MAN WHO INTERFERES, AND ALWAYS HAVE DONE AND ALWAYS WILL. WHY, BECAUSE HE THINKS HE IS SUPERIOR. WHY, ALL HE DOES IS EXPLOITING WITHOUT PAYING WHAT IS DUE. STEALING AND KILLING AND LYING. THAT IS WHAT MANKIND IS.
EVEN LYING TO HIMSELF IN ORDER TO BULLY OTHER PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THAT WHAT HE DOES IS THE RIGHT THING. SPOILED ROTTEN AND ALWAYS WANTING MORE, AND MORE AND MORE, IT IS NEVER ENOUGH, ISN’T IT. PIMPS!!!!!!

Anna Hickl | 4/16/2008, 3:37 am EST

Congratulations for the decision of Matchbox Twenty. Rodeos are horrible cruelty to animals. They are tortured in any form only for the human entertainment. Thats horrible and I am glad Matchbox Twenty realised it and takes the consequences. More people should do this.

Kathy | 4/16/2008, 3:41 am EST

And thank you Rob Thomas for joining us in our fight to stop the slaughter of our American Icon. The Horse:)

Karin B. | 4/16/2008, 8:30 am EST

I used to be married to somebody from East Texas, where rodeos are very common. I went with him to one of them and left, because I do not support cruelty of any kind to animals. If you want to show how macho you are, find a bar that has a mechanical bull.

Kathleen H. | 4/16/2008, 11:10 am EST

Good for Matchbox Twenty! I don’t really care too much for the group but I’ll re-think that because it sure is attractive that they have taken this stand.

Suzie Gordon | 4/16/2008, 8:07 pm EST

Thanks Matchbox20 for making a stand for a very noble cause. Why people actually get enjoyment out of seeing animals mistreated is beyond me.

Jo Carlyle | 4/16/2008, 8:55 pm EST

Way to Go Matchbox Twenty, I knew I like you!

Loren | 4/16/2008, 9:09 pm EST

I’m so proud of matchbox 20!
This is a step in the right direction!
I hope other people will follow in their footsteps :)

Christine P. | 4/16/2008, 9:32 pm EST
