“American Idol” Elimination: Michael Johns Booted in Cruel Farewell

4/11/08, 11:13 am EST

Dial Idol predicted Carly Smithson or Syesha Mercado would be going home. TiVo (using their powers of fast-forward and rewind data collection) said it would be Mercado. But nobody was as stunned as Michael Johns when Ryan Seacrest informed the Aussie singer he had received the lowest number of votes after his “inspirational” performance of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” this week. While Johns’ family and friends gasped with dismay, Seacrest twisted the knife by reminding us that last year, nobody was eliminated Idol Gives Back week — then telling Johns he wasn’t so lucky (see clip, above). So what does this mean for Idol? More cries of conspiracy and fewer neckerchiefs.

Hi: I didn’t Idol worship this year. Thinking about watching it caused an onset of boredom. Did anything interesting happen?

I am big Michael Johns. He has the natural gesture or charisma of a brilliant performer. I must admit “Dream On” wasn’t his best but good enough compared to Syesha’s or Carly’s or Kristy’s. this clearly shows that most Americans didn’t vote properly. They prefer utter “charm” of Archuleta (who is not geat of a singer by the way) or emotionally boring contestants like Brooke. Although my prediction was true that it would be Johns,Smithson, and Mercado who’d be in the Bottom 3, I shattered when it was declared that Johns will be leaving the competition. Carly’s performance is as worse as boils and Syesha’s take on that stupid song is equivalent to collision of planets.

Am I the only one who loved his performance of Dream On? I absolutely cannot believe he got kicked off, I keep listening to his songs, will be looking forward to an album hopefully soon.

I am sure there has been a mistake with letting Michael Johns go. He is by far the best. Also, it was very cruel in the way it was done. Shame on you, Ryan!!! I don’t know that I will continue to watch unless this has been made right.

I find Ryan Seacrest unusually cruel and rude this season from his comments to Simon and them most of all last night. He hurt all of us by saying that last year they didn’t eliminate anyone on “give back” week. This comment gave all hope – only to be crushed again. I used to agree that Ryan might be another Dick Clark — excuse me know way!!! Dick Clark was always a kind gentleman. I am ready for them to change the host. The incident with Michael Johns, just finalized my thoughts this season. I feel they “Idol” should do something apologize on behalf of Michael Johns for that statement or bring him back because many didn’t vote because they thought there would be no elimination this week. Last night’s show was horrible. I literally had a pit in my stomach as it dawned on me what was happening. It was not only shocking that Michael Johns was eliminated, but the way Ryan Seacrest handled it was unforgivable. He should be booted from the show without notice. I also think the producers should reconsider their policy of this week. Last year they said it was not in the spirit of giving to boot anyone. I think that’s what people expected this year (including the contestants). It broke my heart when Ryan dangled false hope in front of Michael and then snatched it back with “goodbye.” Michael should be back for another week, Ryan Seacrest should apologize for his bad behaviour, and then the real bottom two should go next week. Kristy Lee Cook should be one of them, despite her recent pulling the patriot and the God cards to stay in the running.

This has to be themost horrible thing I have witnessed in a long time on AI. Not only did the very best singer get the boot but in a week that was supposed to be about goodness and giving that just didnt happen. I think the entire week was ruined by the actions of Ryan Seacrest and the cruel goodbye to Michael Johns. I dont have the heart or the desire to continue watching what was once my favorite show on TV.

Michael Johns was the best on the show this year. I probably will not watch the show anymore after the cruel joke that Ryan played on Michael. I am calling and writing the sponsers of AI Cocacola and Ford and telling them how I feel. A lot of my friends of all ages are furious.

Ryan Seacrest is not as “cute” as he thinks he is. His comments prior to delivering the final blow to Michael Johns were inexcusable. Michael Johns should be allowed to compete one more week. If not, we should all be finished with the show, Coca cola products, and Fords! Has anyone really tried to reach the sponsors or producers? It is a Kafkaesque experience, if one tries to do it by email and, unfortunately, snailmail is by definition too slow to make a difference for Michael Johns. So, we need to do it in the marketplace. Dylan has said it well, “money doesn’t talk it swears.” Boycott the products!

Smithy | 4/13/2008, 4:18 pm EST

Michael, while a very charming person, is no more than a karaoke singer. Don’t confuse his personality or looks with his inability to sing on key, in rhythm, or with even a hint of originality. He doesn’t belong in the top half of the finalists so whether he goes this week or next week, or the week after doesn’t really matter.

Ryan knows that everyone hates him and he’s starting to take it out on the contestants. Hopefully, this will be his last season.

Ameria got it wrong this week. Michael John’s rendition of Dream On was powerful. I think he’ll go places anyway. Ryan Seacrist’s comment was outrageous.

Karen Kettner | 4/13/2008, 9:22 pm EST

I tried to vote for him for 15 minutes and it was busy. Did anyone else have trouble voting for Michael John?

Saad | 4/13/2008, 10:06 pm EST

yeah he didn’t deserve to go but it happends…what ryan seacrest did was wack though…and carly or syesha shouldn’t have gone…it should have been kristy lee…my god that girl sux balls…

Ryoma16 | 4/16/2008, 9:58 am EST

Kristy lee cook, what a horrible singer!!!

R | 6/15/2008, 2:43 pm EST

That is so messed up! Syesha and Michael did not deserve 2 be in the bottom 3 this time. They were outstanding once again that night. Bottom 3 shud have been Brooke, Kristy and Carly (she’s good but that performance wasn’t her best) w/ Kristy going home. I cannot believe she outlasted other singers who had lot more talent than her. She shud have never even got selected in the auditions.

Ro | 6/15/2008, 2:53 pm EST

If the judges didn’t underpraise Syesha, Michael and Carly all throughout the season, there wudn’t b many Carly, Syesha or Michael haters. In fact MJ would have stayed (no shocker). The only reason y others like Brooke is popular is b/c of her cheap personality & judges overpraise her and Jason is b/c he is charming and b/c people like his hair. If this were a singing competition Syesha, Michael and Carly wud b miles ahead of Brooke, Jason and even Kristy Lee Cook who stinks also. Brooke, Jason and Kristy shud have gone way before Michael Johns and never even made the top 12. (Don’t mean 2 offend)!
