The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

4/9/08, 1:07 pm EST

To mark tonight’s Idol Gives Back charity special, the hopefuls were asked to sing inspirational songs, so we learned Our Lady Peace inspire David Cook (Daughtry alert!) and Robbie Williams inspires David Archuleta (is this kid really American?). Michael Johns wore a neckerchief, Brooke White pretended to be Carole King and Syesha Mercado stupidly argued she shouldn’t be compared to Fantasia after she sang a Fantasia song. But for the night’s essential moments, watch these quick clips:

5. David Cook nabs Chris Martin’s “meaningful message scrawled on hand” trick. It fails.

4. The Night of a Thousand High Notes got Paula talking about her chihuahuas.

3. If Paula’s chihuahuas could dial the phone, they’d be voting for Kristy Lee Cook.

2. Every season somebody covers “Over the Rainbow.” This time it was Jason Castro, who surely inspired a few giggles after the “way up high” line.

1. Carly Smithson may be going home … for daring to look directly into Simon’s face during her performance. We told you he hates her.

Jason Castro’s cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” sounds exactly like Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’woble’s version.
