On the Charts: R.E.M. Accelerate to Best Open in a Decade

The Big News: George Strait went straight to the top of the Billboard album chart as his Troubadour sold 166,305 copies to debut at number one. R.E.M. moved 115,458 copies of Accelerate to take the number two slot, giving the venerable alt-rockers their highest chart position since 1996’s New Adventures in Hi-Fi. NOW 27 placed third, last week’s champ Day26 dropped to fourth, while the indestructible Alvin & the Chipmunks soundtrack rounded out the top five, thanks in part to the movie’s DVD release which boasted its sales 111 percent over last week.

Debuts: The charts were stocked with newbies, with Van Morrison’s Keep It Simple and the Rolling Stones‘ soundtrack to Shine A Light leading the charge after Strait, R.E.M. and Trina’s Still Da Baddest, which entered at five. The Black KeysAttack & Release debuted strongly at fourteen, Moby’s Last Night took number twenty-seven, Muse’s live H.A.A.R.P. joined in at forty-six and Sun Kil Moon’s April grabbed 127.

Last Week’s Heroes: The debuts shook up last week’s top ten, pushing the Raconteurs’ Consolers of the Lonely into eighteenth place this week after debuting at seven last week. Panic At the Disco’s Pretty. Odd. needed only a week to fall out of the top ten, going from two to twelve. The B-52’s Funplex experienced a similar fate, plunging from eleven to forty-eight. Counting Crows clung to the top ten, with Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings falling from three to eight. In platinum news, Jack Johnson’s Sleep Through the Static broke the million copies barrier this week; the album sits at lucky number thirteen.

It’s so wonderful to see REM on top of their game again. ACCELERATE rocks!

The Alvin & the Chipmunks soundtrack rocks too! Kick ass!

I would’ve bought a copy of Accelerate… if any of the stores in my area had carried it. The only place that had it was Borders – and I wasn’t going to pay $18.99 for it. Of course, I only tried four stores…

Hey maybe Muse might have done better if Warner and some stupid magazines had promoted it a little better! I’ve already decided to cancel my subscription to RS due to their lack of even recognising that Muse exists. Just because you dispise this talent doesn’t mean other people should be deprived from finding out about them!

muse is nothing to rave about and who cares about panic at the disco. REM rocks and always has. Glad to see people digging them again.

Are you really going to cancel your subscription because RS doen’t cover Muse? I agree they are a great band, but that’s a little petty. I mean there’s many other, better reasons to cancel your subscription to Rolling Stone, and I think Muse is doing fine without them. Besides, H.A.A.R.P. is a live set, tailored to fans only. On another note, I am very happy for the guys in R.E.M., I have been a fan since Life’s Rich Pageant, and am glad to see them at least charting again, even if sales all across the board suck. Also it makes me happy that the Panic!!!!!!! At the Disco album tanked. The Beatles are a good influence, but to just rip them off is not the path to true art.

Michelle is correct.... | 4/10/2008, 5:04 pm EST

Muse is good. REM blows, always have and always will.

all you tattoed slaves | 4/11/2008, 12:06 am EST

I wish REM would “Stand” in a field of landmines!!!

28 Years and Counting!

REM is awesome. There’s really no denying that considering the amount of success they’ve had. But besides that, REM has been able to create beautiful ballads (Automatic, Out of Time, etc…) and hardcore hard rock (Monster) and been really good at both. Not many bands are able to do both well. Not to mention the variety of other musical styles that they’ve produced well or their the ability to maintain a unique style all their own.

REM blows? Don’t answer here, cos you’ll only say ya have… but have you ever actually listened to New Adbentures in hi fi, automatic, out of time, etc from REM? From start to finish those albums? If not, then don’t throw around uneducated shite!
