Rock List: Reader’s Picks for the Next Velvet Revolver Singer

4/7/08, 4:39 pm EST

Last week, we asked our readers to pretend they were Careerbuilder.com and help fill the Velvet Revolver lead vocalist job. Many sent in resumes, some candidates got second interviews, but the readers ultimately chose to save former Audioslave/Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell from solo album purgatory and employ him as the next band mate to Slash, Duff and the rest of VR. But the pick of Cornell wasn’t unanimous; here are the singers you want to see fill Scott Weiland’s shoes in Velvet Revolver.

1. Chris Cornell
2. Josh Todd from Buckcherry
3. Sebastian Bach
4. Eric Dover from Slash’s Snakepit
5. Izzy Stradlin
6. Gavin Rossdale
7. Mike Patton
8. Lukas Rossi from Rock Star: Supernova
9. Scott Stapp
10. Sammy Hagar
11. Billy Idol
12. Danzig
13. Kid Rock
14. Perry Farrell
15. Ozzy Osbourne

I hope it’s Lenny Kravits

The Iceman | 6/20/2008, 4:21 pm EST

KEVIN JONES FROM THE BAND RATTLEFACE WILL THE NEW SINGER OF VR IF THEY ARE SMART

Right Singer = Everything | 6/8/2008, 10:50 pm EST

it better not be that guy Michael Johns from AMerican Idol or any a$$-hat like that. It would just be wrong, but I read somewhere that they may have found a guy from australia to be their singer. If they pick an guy like him I’ll write them off for good and be done with ‘em. I hope they don’t rush themselves in finding the right person.

mr.hihihi | 6/8/2008, 5:01 pm EST

I have loved VR for a very long time and saw them in winniepg in october. and i think with out scott wieland they cant be a band. He has amazing vocals that i dont think anyone could sound like….so i hate to say it but i think VR is done.THEY SHOULD START GUNS AND ROSES AGAIN!!

Lukas Rossi??
David Cook??
Scott Stapp??
Fred Durst??
…and etc.????

You people have to be kidding, right?

Their best bet is an unknown, but I’m starting to think the VR guys might be screwed.

The Jägermeister Meister | 5/31/2008, 7:30 pm EST

I really like VR, but Scott’s dancing and posing made me cringe every time I went to see them play. So yeah, I’d rather see a nice looking woman on stage with a set of pipes than another dude who moves like a cracked out stripper. I’d be at every show to see that.

And I vote that the new singer is banned from using that tired megaphone forevermore.

mr. yes please thank you | 5/28/2008, 11:00 am EST

girls fronting bands are awesome.
we don’t have a good one any more. courtney love is old and ugly these days. we need fresh blood

Jeremy | 5/28/2008, 9:37 am EST

david cook

Uvq | 5/22/2008, 9:47 pm EST

Whitfield Crane from Ugly Kid Joe. He would be excellent for them..

Xterminator | 5/19/2008, 8:09 pm EST

I agree with anyone who says they need a new and unknown singer. You can’t just take some washed up idiot who already messed up one band. they need an unknown, random person.

Anonymous | 5/9/2008, 8:45 pm EST

if axl’s not up for a reunion then i think they need a complete unknown singer

the suggestion of a girl is an interesting one. that would be different and cause a lot of good buzz. they just have to find one that’s a super hot badass who can sing big and gritty with the right style. thatwould be tough to find.

haha ha I just described my dream woman

FACUNDO | 5/2/2008, 1:16 am EST

JOHN CORABI!!! He’s THE MAN for VR

Jeremy | 4/28/2008, 9:33 am EST

1. Axl Rose
2. Izzy Stradlin
3. Billy Idol
4. Sebastion Bach
5. David Lee Roth
6. Eric Dover
7. Sammy Hagar

Jack | 4/25/2008, 1:33 pm EST

Has anyone listened to Libertad lately?!?! That record sounds like a new STP record with Slash taking periodic solos. Honestly, no one besides Weiland can pull off those tunes. His style is to unique. I think VR needs to wrap it up and start from scratch. I love both STP and VR, but VR without Weiland is just 3 5ths of GNR, 1 suicide machine, and no singer.

joey | 4/22/2008, 8:13 am EST

Mike Matijevic from steelheart

Jim Jones | 4/18/2008, 5:40 pm EST

Prophet from the band ST. MADNESS would take them all out!

He would be perfect for Slash and company!

VR RULES!

seyff | 4/13/2008, 11:20 pm EST

michael jackson , period.

super goup | 4/13/2008, 8:06 pm EST

Actually SLASH, TOMMY LEE, DAVID LEE ROTH, and the bassist from SABBITH were very close to putting this group together in the late 90’s but ego’s prevailed.

Nil | 4/13/2008, 5:36 pm EST

I would choose Toschie, lead vocal of Audrey Horne. Great Voice, it would be perfect for Velvet Revolver!!

Randy Van Stone | 4/13/2008, 2:51 am EST

Randy Van Stone is the only MAN for the job.

Dave DeBest | 4/12/2008, 5:29 pm EST

KEVIN JONESSSSSSSSSSSSSSZAYYYYYYYYYY HELL YEAH without a question the Vocal Star of all in O.C. throw some metal on top of that VR - he’s blues based just like Slash - they’d be so killer together - I saw Kevin Jones sing last Sunday at his studio - he sangs for 4 hours straight and didnt miss a note - he was singing Originals and copies even a couple Alice In Chains songs and sounded awesome !! on guitar as well he’s the real deal

Amp Man | 4/12/2008, 5:19 pm EST

I heard a CD that Jones sang on with Slash - an old demo when he was trying to get the Snakepit Gig like 9 years ago - Kevin is hottest unkown in music and shreds guitar he blows Axl and Weiland away !! and I dug Axl 15 years ago !! you know before he did the whole Bo Derek Wig Thing …

Stefanie | 4/12/2008, 5:12 pm EST

Kevin Jones would be the dude

The Ice Man | 4/12/2008, 4:54 pm EST

JONESEY FROM RATTLEFACE WOULD SLAY THEM ALL AS THE NEW SINGER OF VELVET REVOLVER

Wolf gange Van Halen! | 4/12/2008, 4:50 pm EST

The best rock star alive. DIAMOND DAVID LEE ROTH would be massive but he has a slightly more high pofile gig at the moment…The VAN HALEN tour is grossing 1.4 million a show. My guess is after this is done he’s gonna hang it up, and count his millions.

Rattle face..lol | 4/12/2008, 4:36 pm EST

Sounds like he is choking on something.

David White | 4/12/2008, 4:25 pm EST

Kevin Jones of Rattleface !!!

DAVEY P. | 4/12/2008, 4:19 pm EST

I heard that Kevin Jones of Rattleface is auditioning for VR !

Davey P. | 4/12/2008, 4:14 pm EST

Kevin Jones from Rattleface & W.A.D. would be the perfect for for VR !!!

Davey P. | 4/12/2008, 3:58 pm EST

Kevin Jones will be the New Lead Singer of Velvet Revolver!!! He’s my bro and he is awesome
Davey P.
Dana Point, Ca

Sharina | 4/12/2008, 9:59 am EST

I love Chris but he is way too political motivated for a band like velvet revolver who just to want to rock out without the rest of the krap…Axl needs to pull his shit together and get the band back on track without being a controlling asshole…

Andrew the English bloke | 4/12/2008, 4:59 am EST

For Your Consideration:
Rolf Harris (awesome cover of “stairway to heaven”)
Michael Jackson (’cos he’s “really, really Bad”)
that bloke out of Ugly Kid Joe (you remember them, don’t you? Nope? me neither).
Ahem

Rock with out the roll | 4/11/2008, 8:39 pm EST

Well this canadian rocker would give his left nut. Even though it would hurt like hell. For an audition.

be | 4/11/2008, 2:47 pm EST

they just need to get rid of matt then bring in a better drummer and then forsure bring back scott!
use to love matt now i fucking hate him..

Bob | 4/11/2008, 2:43 pm EST

If they can’t get Josh Todd then they’ll have to call Rob Halford.

blackbottom | 4/11/2008, 1:44 pm EST

I would buy a new STP cd but I’d rather have third VR album. Maybe the problem is Matt Sorum. Replace him or have a talk with him and maybe Weiland will stay.

Scotty Hall | 4/11/2008, 1:41 pm EST

This will sound random to all of you, and he may be “too old”, but I think this guy is still “tough-as-nails” enough for the position:
Corey Glover (from Living Colour).
It’d be pretty cool.

Anonymous | 4/11/2008, 1:40 pm EST

Ray | 4/11/2008, 12:37 pm EST

Axl, jajaja but stop joking Chris woul be the best i mean you hear cochise, he fit in a soun like zepellin in an alternative way, the perfect for velvet and slash and 3rd (remember axl is 1st :P ) Josh a really rocker attitude

Axl's ego | 4/11/2008, 12:24 pm EST

It’s pretty obvious, but I won’t let him.

Matt | 4/11/2008, 11:29 am EST

If they want to fall into the category of “completely irrelevant” they will pick Sabastan Bach.

megatron1 | 4/11/2008, 11:22 am EST

GNR really needs to reunite at this point. I mean Hell froze over and David Lee Roth got back with Eddie Van Halen, so anything can happen. Now would be the best time with whole VR mess. If not I agree to get a unkown singer, someone we haven’t seen before.

Kwood | 4/11/2008, 9:57 am EST

AXL

DYT | 4/11/2008, 4:04 am EST

IZZY! IZZY! IZZY! IZZY! IZZY! IZZY!

AliffJJ | 4/11/2008, 12:10 am EST

Amy Search, from Malaysia :D

boatman | 4/10/2008, 11:36 pm EST

Chris Cornell can wail but he’s a poor lyricist. Scott Stapp is a religious idiot. Jerry Cantrell is great but VR doesn’t need another guitar player. Gavin Rossdale would be okay but he’s not going to hit the road and leave his new family. Chris Robinson has a better thing going on with the Crowes. Face it: replacing Weiland is almost impossible. Only Axl could show him up. Time to fold up VR and start a whole new band.

rockchild | 4/10/2008, 11:05 pm EST

Eric Dover is the only one that will make VR shine!

xeal1387 | 4/10/2008, 9:23 pm EST

mike clink | 4/10/2008, 8:07 pm EST

what about that tatooed girl from this season of american idol?? she has a killer talent, and looks like she’s a rocker.they should try a girl.

Rachlin,J | 4/10/2008, 6:51 pm EST

He’s fronted a band which consists of two guys who have toured with Malmsteen nd Vai and he has done it well since the age of 12,and surely looks like the leader.I have seen this kid in action as opening act for Lukas Rossi OF Rockstar Supernova. He has a lot of Slash in him and the two of them playing guitar and interacting together would be great for rock. The kid Jesse Kinch should be given great consideration. He is for real and he is ready! His website really shows him off in many styles.

Aaron | 4/10/2008, 6:31 pm EST

Like The Ozzman man would ever sing with velvet Revolver. Not that I have anything against VR I think they are great and Slash and Duff are two of my heroes. I don’t see Ozzy going with them in a million years however.

15 year old girl/RS editor | 4/10/2008, 4:32 pm EST

David Cook!!!
Dont you guys watch idol. He’s perfect, he’s got really cool hair, and black finger nails, and he does this weird smirky thing with his eyebrows. Perfect man for the job.

dudemeister | 4/10/2008, 3:00 pm EST

Justin Hawkins (although if he is trying to stay clean, it probably wouldn’t be the best move on his part).

Ed | 4/10/2008, 1:57 pm EST

Seb. Bach was actually the first choice of singer for VR back when they started. But they couldn’t come to terms over some stupid stuff.

wrecksracer | 4/10/2008, 11:20 am EST

Yeah, Torn Anus…I mean Tori Amos…would be great

zach s | 4/10/2008, 7:50 am EST

im glad im not the only one who thinks john bush would be the best fit!!!! he is a great singer and would fit perfectly with them.
Oh and screw everybody here that says vr sux! u sux!! vr have great songs and i think they are a great band (at least in my opinion)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

me | 4/10/2008, 2:37 am EST

shifty shellshock from Crazytown would be my choice. come my lady, come come my lady.

Forever Young | 4/10/2008, 1:16 am EST

Rock it with the kid..that kid Jesse Kinch you guys been talkin about. He’s a funky rockin brother even if he’s 13.. Just think, no alcohol, no drugs, ..perfect singer on that you tube walk video! Rock on little man!

dm | 4/9/2008, 10:20 pm EST

Scott Stapp doesn’t fit at all

Eric dover is an amazing singer, whoever talks down to him is an ass

paulster | 4/9/2008, 8:39 pm EST

Chris Cornell is NOT a team player.Theydd be looking for a third singer after one or two albums without a doubt.

Jones | 4/9/2008, 8:24 pm EST

Dieter | 4/9/2008, 8:13 pm EST

Let Axl R.I.P. - besides he already gave Stevie Wonder his Dread Wig Back - he balder than George On Seinfeld now lets move to future shall we always dig up the past do really want that spoiled babybitch back ??? why ??

MikeH | 4/9/2008, 6:47 pm EST

Hmmm…I like the idea of Shirley Manson a lot — good call. What about Lenny Kravitz?
But the planets do seem to be lining up for a true GnR reunion — it needs to happen.

Sophie | 4/9/2008, 5:45 pm EST

Cornell would be cool. Besides, he can’t get back together with Soundgarden because Matt Cameron would have to leave Pearl Jam, and that’s just not nice.

FRANKIE | 4/9/2008, 5:03 pm EST

The jesse kinch kid was a real surprise.amazing stage presence and great performer. He could be the one.Great website and you tube videos!PEOPLE SHOULD CHECK THIS BOY OUT!!!

Michael St. Hubbins | 4/9/2008, 4:24 pm EST

Spinal Tap would like to add
Kevin Effing Jones of W.A.D. & Rattleface we feel he ’s Zesty

Devinoch | 4/9/2008, 4:21 pm EST

I have to confess, the idea of Mike Patton fronting VR is definitely an intriguing one…

Orion | 4/9/2008, 4:18 pm EST

Sebastian Bach is a joke. Cornell is great vocalist and he thinks he can make it on his own but cannot - he needs to get back together with Soundgarden. Ozzy - come on! really? Scott Stapp from Creed - I can’t believe his name actually came up. Gavin Rossdale - he hasn’t been relavent since 1998. Jerry Cantrell is way too talented plus he can survive on his own - he doesn’t need those losers. GNR getting back together will never happen so forget about that pipe-dream. There should be a law against “super-groups” like Audioslave and Velvet Revolver because they never work - too many egos. Not to mention that Audioslave and Velvet Revolver are incredibly lame band names. “Welcome Holiday Inn guests, tonight’s entertainment will be Velvet Revolver. They will begin right after the dinner buffet in the manager’s lounge. Tips are appreciated.”

jonesz | 4/9/2008, 4:16 pm EST

Where’s KEVIN JONES ?
have a live audition with all these guys Chris & I will roll all there heads !!!!!!! Buckcherry yeah freaking right !! hhhhhhhhhhahahaaaaaaaaaa aaaah ahaaaa hey how about Lou Reed or Johnny Rotten !! yeah thats right I had the ballz to nominate myself - bite me

old guns | 4/9/2008, 2:48 pm EST

I wish i could see the old GNR together again. But obviously, due to ego problem, that’s still impossible. they should try to find somebody with similar voice and attittude as Axl and stop playing to be a new band. We need more GNR like songs

Lou | 4/9/2008, 1:51 pm EST

As long as you have Matthew Sorum is in the band is gonna sock.

Please get Izzy, Axl and Steven back

its really sad to see bands like Motley Crue making records and not have GnR get back together. And we have to deal with this Velvet crap. Thats why Weiland left … its crap.

Dan | 4/9/2008, 1:49 pm EST

fred durst would be a great choice! i’m glad someone thought of him. in fact, weiland served as vocal coach for durst during the ’significant other’ and ’starfish’ recording sessions

Dan | 4/9/2008, 1:49 pm EST

Ozzy too old, Kid Rock not suited. Chris Cornell too likely to reunion with Soundgarden OR Audioslave.
My vote goes to either Seb Bach or possibly Michael Matijevic - one of the greatest voices EVER!!

Slash | 4/9/2008, 4:03 am EST

It’s a big secret…but they’re in talks with Sebastian Bach. Heard it here first folks

Slash's Hat | 4/9/2008, 12:59 am EST

Mike Ness

me | 4/9/2008, 12:32 am EST

man, John Bush, who was the best singer anthrax ever had

matt | 4/8/2008, 11:28 pm EST

ozzy actually could work…but he doesn’t have quite the amount of energy anymore…same with danzig
Todd would need a lyricist (izzy!)…the dover experiment happened and wasn’t that great…rossdale sucks…Patton was amazing, but i haven’t heard him in a while…rossi sucks alot…stapp sucks the most…hagar’s too old/ van hagar sucked (solo was great)…Idol, too old and not a good fit…Kid Rock, hahahahha, yea they want it to be a talented band…farrell, not a good fit…
bach could be cool, but would just make everyone (yes everyone)want the real GNR more…Cornell would be great musically, but it would never last…

izzy should take dave’s place and he should get his indiana friend to join

until then,
i suggest trainwreck (relatively unknown VR/gnr coverband singer)…look him up VR

Who cares? | 4/8/2008, 10:20 pm EST

The stage has been set. We have sat back and watched the most influential figures in rock reunite over the last decade….its time for the return of GUNS….cmon and admit you know you want it……

ben fong torres | 4/8/2008, 7:05 pm EST

izzy would be cool

Gatorstudio | 4/8/2008, 4:08 pm EST

Eric Dover is #1 on my list. He’s got 80 times the pipes that Smack-Head Weiland could ever hope to have.

Tyler Durden | 4/8/2008, 3:46 pm EST

Which frontman would I fight?

I’d fight Ozzy. He’ll bite and scratch and claw.

Now to mention pissing on you and casting spells.

Bukowski | 4/8/2008, 3:42 pm EST

Interesting . . . Cantrell sounds like a good fit.

He’s got a better voice and vibe than Weiland anyway.

He could also help out in the songwriting department, God knows they need it.

Anonymous | 4/8/2008, 3:19 pm EST

They’re going to try to get Jerry Cantrell. Rolling Stone chat board exclusive.

If they want to stay “Velvet Revolver” then they need to have a singer that has the same early ninties nasal-grunge voice as Weiland. So vocally Gavin Rossdale, Scott Stapp, Eddie Vedder, etc. all make sense, but the band has no connection to those guys, and there would be some pretty substantial personality differences. Jerry is the best choice since they know him, he’s not a drama queen, and he’s a similar type of guy. For that matter he has a large body of work for the band to cover at live shows. Jerry would be great; I hope it works out.

Lennox | 4/8/2008, 2:35 pm EST

1. Shirley Manson
2. Billy Idol
3. Meatloaf
4. i dunno…Amanda Palmer

wartime | 4/8/2008, 2:19 pm EST

Now is the time to stand up and scream for old gnr lineup, there may not be a better time to stand up, Please no Cris Cornell

joe cool has the answer…

David St. Hubbins.

SVUF | 4/8/2008, 9:59 am EST

The only problem I can forsee with chris Cornell is that he may too reunite with Soundgarden and the rest of VR will be right back to the predicament they are in right now. In my opinion, VR should get an unknown lead vocalist; this way it will be a less of a chance of being in their current predicament. Also to give that person a chance at stardom.

Flick | 4/8/2008, 9:42 am EST

Derek St. Holmes!! (He sand strangehold with Ted Nugent)

I think he had an incredible voice, and have no idea what he’s up to now.

Why would Chris Robinson leave the Crowes? Have you heard the album that just came out? It’s ten times better than anything Velvet Revolver has ever done.

Cornell would be awesome. Make 3 records and tour for a few years like Audioslave. This gives them additional $$$$ to their bank account and would make a lot of fans happy for while until Axl’s project comes out. Then if it blows, maybe they’ll consider reuniting the old G n’ R and Soundgarden. Everyone’s happy.

What Tim “Ripper” Owens up to these days?

Ozzy and Slash could never handle being in a band together. To big egos. Though, that would be an incredible band

I could see Jeff Scott Soto. The man has an amazing voice and is a great lyricist. John Corabi. When he was with Motley Crue. That album rocked. From begining to end.
London Le Grand of Brides of Destruction. Great front man. Great voice.

Barbara Streisand

Ray | 4/7/2008, 7:14 pm EST

Obviously, not a single frontman alive today comes even close to filling the shoes of W. Axl Rose.Pssh.Well,ok … Maybe Cornell would be a good choice.I would also love to hear what Danzig’s kick ass vocals would have to offer.Weren’t Danzig and Slash supposed to record some “blues” album at one point?

Jeff | 4/7/2008, 7:07 pm EST

Oh yeah, pretend you didn’t see me brilliantly suggest Gary Cherone. You know it was funny.

Justin (Tacoma, WA) | 4/7/2008, 6:58 pm EST
