New Kids on the Block Cause Mayhem at Reunion Announcement

4/4/08, 11:53 am EST

It’s been fourteen years since the New Kids on the Block shared a stage, but you wouldn’t know it judging by the crush of fans decked out in NKOTB jean jackets and tour laminates screeching with delight at the Today show plaza this morning. The now-thirtysomething boy band was bombarded by rain-soaked women dressed like teens (many with their actual teenage daughters) as the group announced a new album (due this summer) and a fall tour. “It was music that brought us back [together],” said Donnie Wahlberg, who for the last decade has followed his brother Mark into acting. “We really weren’t going to announce this yet, but a story leaked … and we said we better come out and let [the fans] know that it’s official.”

Their 1988 single “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” played as a large red curtain dropped to unveil the five guys to shrieks of “Still hot!” and “We love you, Donnie!” The group will make their first comeback performance in the same spot on May 16th live on Today with what they say will be a set of old and new songs. Although they did not offer specifics on their new sound — the crowd got just a quick sample of new track “Summertime” — they hinted it would be similar to their old tunes “with less ‘oh oh ohs,’ ” said Danny Wood. (Video after the jump)

As for the tour? It will be “action-packed,” said Jordan Knight, who saw minor solo success with his 1999 single “Give It to You.” “We got some moves,” Wahlberg reassured the crowd pressed against the barricades, sending them into hysteria with just a wink. “These are the kind of fans we have,” added Joey McIntyre, who spent the last ten years balancing a solo career with Broadway roles. “[They] stand in the cold and rain.” When asked the inevitable question of whether the New Kids have plans to change their name, Wood perked up: “We’re kids at heart; we’re never gonna change.”

Jughead | 4/4/2008, 1:47 pm EST

It looks like the women here have finally woke up. Is this what it takes to get women to comment on this site? A pic and story about some pretty boy has-beens ready to exploit the public once more with corny love songs so they can make mega bucks by pulling at women’s heart strings?

EB1227 | 4/4/2008, 1:56 pm EST

In response to jugheads question “YES”

Sarah Rose | 4/4/2008, 2:31 pm EST

Really? Really? Was it too much to hope it would end with the Spice Girls? I mean, I loved them as much as the next blind hearted preteen girl of the era, but come on… They’re pushing 40! I went to their website out of curiosity. It’d be one thing if they knew they were a novelty act now, but they’re taking themselves far too seriously to be, well, taken seriously. Sure they’ll sell tickets though [shrug]

Amanda | 4/4/2008, 2:34 pm EST

I have never stopped being an NKOTB fan. Even when i got made fun of I didnt care.them getting back together is the best news ive heard in a looong time!!!!

Fran | 4/4/2008, 2:42 pm EST

I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love you!!

Meredyth | 4/4/2008, 2:43 pm EST

Please, RS. It’s Danny Wood, no “s.” Even in my pee-my-pants excitement over this reunion, I demand a little journalistic integrity.

Niki | 4/4/2008, 2:45 pm EST

I loved them when i was 13 and I love them maybe even more now at 31…(if thats possible). I am so excited!!

KHOP! | 4/4/2008, 4:20 pm EST

Although I am truly upset that there will be “less ‘oh oh ohs’,” I am excited about what the “action-packed” ideas may be. Oh boy, I guess we’ll have to wait.

Reading this AMAZING review makes me feel like I’m back at Radnor Rolls at an elementary school roller skating party.

Melissa | 4/4/2008, 4:34 pm EST

This review rocks! I am so happy they are back together.

gisellesmommie | 4/4/2008, 4:36 pm EST

I as SOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!! I’ve hoping for this reunion for years now! It’s here!! INCREDIBLE!!

A True fan | 4/4/2008, 7:00 pm EST

I just hope this time around boys and men will be more excepting. Hopefully they will stop being so insecure and jealous, step aside and listen to them as musicians. Go along for the ride with a smile on their face and let the New Kids do their own thing, and not be threatened.

Cari | 4/4/2008, 7:20 pm EST

I am very excited about this reunion. My husband just chuckles. I hope their tour includes Canada. I would love to see them again. A fan for life. Love them all.

Tara ferguson | 4/4/2008, 7:23 pm EST

I am so excited about the reunion tour. My mature friends and I are counting down the days til the release of the new album. It is about time they got back to gether. I played my cassettes until they sounded like matians. I am ready for some new kids cd and I pod down loads.

Boy Bands suck wussy music | 4/4/2008, 7:30 pm EST

Oh my god

this is so awsome a bunch of kids
who barely new each other until maurice starr brought them together to make cheesey sappy lame pop songs and
empty the wallets of pimple faced adolescent girls with braces.
Is back one more time to torture
the eardums of music lovers everywhere !

The torture never stops first the
osmonds reunion now nkotb and madonna in the rock hall of fame
please someone tell me some good news

I wanted a led zeppelin tour and
all that is offered is a manufactured wussy boy band

This news sucks.
its like a milli vanilli reunion useless

Kristi | 4/4/2008, 7:32 pm EST

I haven’t been this excited since the birth of my children. I’m so excited.

sammycsmom | 4/4/2008, 7:43 pm EST

I was as excited today as I was in 1989 when I saw them live in concert for the first time!! I only hope that they have tour dates in massachusetts!!!!

Margie from revere ma, | 4/4/2008, 7:52 pm EST

Oh my god !!
this is wicked awesome news
this tour is gonna be so cool
I still have all my nkotb dolls
and my lunchbox and cassetes and
posters and my tiger beat magazines and t-shirts they don’t
fit anymore though.
Oh my god
I’m going to faint I’m so wicked excited I must be dreaming this can’t be real it’s so awesome

Oz gal | 4/4/2008, 8:32 pm EST

Who cares if they are pushing fourty?? they look HOT!! And now that i’m pushing 30, nothing is stopping me from seeing them if they come to Australia – i will travel to the end of the continent to see them.
I’ll be loving NKOTB forever (especially ‘little’ Joe – SO HOT!)

ds | 4/4/2008, 8:45 pm EST

yeah. it’s so hard to know what to think about this. on one hand i am like good for them. on the other hand i am like, seriously? i’m not much younger then they are, and i really feel like it would be uber humiliating to get back up on stage and start being a new kid again. i just don’t get why they are doing it. is it the $$? this it’s about the music thing i am just not buying. i loved them as much as the next girl in 1989, saw donnie fall through the stage in saratoga, bought pillowcases and dolls and trading cards and bop magazines til i had no more money to spend. but i mean really, were they ever about the music? seriously? this is so weird.

Misguided Angel | 4/4/2008, 8:46 pm EST

I can’t believe they’re back!!! So incredibly excited!! They better be coming to Canada! Wow, almost 20 years later and still so Hot, and can still bring so much excitement.
Look out boy bands! The legends are back!

Savage Girl | 4/4/2008, 9:34 pm EST

I saw them 8 times back in the day…can’t wait to see them again!

JD | 4/5/2008, 12:54 am EST

I wonder if the reunion will be as big or bigger than the Monkees reunion back in 1986. Hey, if the Osmonds can reunite why not the New Kids? Hanging Tough was their best song.

amylee0919 | 4/5/2008, 1:32 am EST

I am more than happy about this. I am estatic. I hope they come to the Peach State (Georgia). I was so in love with Jordan Nathaniel Marcel Knight. Still have Tshirts, nightgowns, books, all my good stuff.

Heather_Marie | 4/5/2008, 3:34 am EST

This is the best news I’ve heard in a long time! I’ve been a fan of NKOTB since I was 6 years old. I’m 24 now and still LOVE them! I never got a chance to go to one of their concerts. But this just may be my chance. I will be the first in line for my tickets wherever their concert may be. SO EXCITED!

Betty | 4/5/2008, 10:09 am EST

Me and my sister Heather can’t wait to see them in concert!!! It’s been our life long dream!! We’ve been fans since we were little kids and we are definatly their #1 fans!!!!!!!

Betty | 4/5/2008, 10:16 am EST

salaisuus | 4/5/2008, 10:46 am EST

So exciting!

scorpio lady stl | 4/6/2008, 3:13 pm EST

Ok, I have mixed feelings on this… Of course, I too OBSESSED over them when I was young. They were by far THE BEST, but I just hope that they will be successful and although all men will still make fun out of shear jealousy and envy-(yes boys we know), I hope that they can at least capture us ladies as they did so well before. And yes, they are still HOT.

Boybanders Must Die | 4/7/2008, 11:16 am EST

Now here is a perfect example of a place Al Queda should go after to make the world a better place. What would be better than nuking a New Kids concert (other than Bush/Cheney)?

Mshaw | 4/8/2008, 10:53 am EST

Great article Nicole Premuto! Your coverage is right on!

Karen | 6/4/2008, 11:01 am EST

Good stuff. I agree with KHOP!, what’s wrong with Oh, Oh, Oh’s? To all u haters, u got your own music to listen to, so go listen to it and leave us alone! We are having the time of our lives with this and no matter what u say, you are not going to ruin it for us. That being said, I will now ignore u. NKOTB forever!

Joe B. | 6/8/2008, 9:06 pm EST

first off to that one guy, led lepplin sucks.

on topic i cant wait i wasnt a nkotb fan at the time of there releses but ive grown to love pop music.

there new single sounds outstanding and if rest album is like that then they got themselves a major hit record!

if you dont liek this msuic then go somewhere else and listen to your crap.

Rock on New Kids!

SammySyncFan | 6/12/2008, 10:54 am EST

I’m excited too.. I just think they should have changed their name to NEW Men on the block.. their not kids anymore!! But still GREAT!!

Newman | 6/13/2008, 8:52 am EST

I remember going into a record store in the early 90s shortly after the New Kids phenomenon thankfully died and seeing a New Kids record (yes record) selling for 50 cents. I remember thinking to myself – this thing is really and truly dead. Then came along Back Street, and everyone seemed to forget how much they hated New Kids. Now this. I know fans are fickle, but come on! You know all you so called “#1 fans” will be mocking these guys in a few months when the next re-incarnation boy band comes along.

Blockhead4Life | 7/14/2008, 7:53 pm EST

Well I am so excited and can’t wait traveling to all but 5 shows on the tour schedule and I will love every minute…this time my mom does not have to pick me up afterwards…LOL since I’m 33 and can drive myself. They all look great.
