Eddie Vedder Digs Deep Into Song, Shirt Archives in Vancouver

4/3/08, 2:01 pm EST

“There’s something about the first time,” said Eddie Vedder, a few songs into his set at the Centre in Vancouver, Brtish Columbia. “Whether it’s good or bad. There’s nothing else like it.” For Vedder, this first time meant a sold out, two-night residency in a city not too far north of his native Seattle for the opening of a solo tour.

On a stage set like a living room jam session, Vedder perched on a stool in a Butthole Surfers tee he’d brought out of “semi-retirement” for the gig (”I think I wore this shirt the first time the band played,” he mused). And with that, he proceeded to play songs from his rapidly expanding solo catalogue: “Guaranteed” from Into the Wild stirred the crowd, as did protest ballad “No More War,” which brought Vedder to tears. Covers were plentiful, including a brilliant reworking of Emmylou Harris‘ version of James Taylor’s “Millworker,” which was nearly matched by a shot at Springsteen’s “Growin’ Up.”

While roadies in labcoats tinkered with the instruments (guitars, a mandolin and a ukelele called “Luke” among them), Vedder played much and talked little, keeping banter swift and funny: “Thank you for the encouragement,” he said after the crowd applauded a flubbed lyric. “But you don’t want to promote that behaviour.”

After multiple encores, Vedder — now clad in labcoat himself — welcomed opener Liam Finn back to help out on “Hard Sun” (the backing instrumental track courtesy of an onstage reel-to-reel). As his opening night drew to a close, Vedder smiled and waved goodbye. “Thanks for being here for this different kind of conversation,” he said. And for the first time on this tour (and certainly not the last), Eddie Vedder got a standing ovation.

Damn, that would’ve been cool. I’ve seen him a couple of times with PJ, where he’d come out before the opening act with just him and the guitar, say “Thanks for Coming Out Early” and proceed to play something for the early birds.
Nice to see someone do a little extra for the fans because they want to instead of feeling like they have to…

C.T. | 4/3/2008, 3:11 pm EST

Eddie Vedder is a class act and punk rock all the way!!

Kurt's Corpse | 4/3/2008, 5:17 pm EST

Who cares?!? When’s the last time this loser was relavent? 1993?? Just a drunk Neil Young-wannabee……but sadly, never was.

Jeremy | 4/3/2008, 5:19 pm EST

Agreed Kurt……Vedder is a talentless loser. Horrible at guitar.

artificialred | 4/3/2008, 5:46 pm EST

Vedder IS talented you asshole!! His solo album is REALLY good. you might like it if you give it a try.

Tim | 4/3/2008, 5:47 pm EST

Yeah, who cares! Oh wait, this is a music website frequented by people who like various types of music. Maybe someone does care. Wait a minute, I think I care. Yup, I do. I actually care a lot. Damn.

Orion | 4/3/2008, 5:58 pm EST

When was the last time he was relevant – 1993? Pearl Jam and Vedder are argueably making some of their best music right now. PJ last record is very socially and musically relevant and one of the best albums they’ve ever made. The Into the Wild soundtrack is brilliant musically and lyrically as well. There’s not too many artists out there that could’ve personally created an entire soundtrack that fully embraced and embodied that amazing story. PJ is simply one of the greatest american rock bands in the past 20-years – period.

Gali Bro | 4/3/2008, 6:25 pm EST

No talent? Not relevant? Who made you guys judges of the music world. If he sold out the crowd, was just nominated for some of the biggest awards, how can you say he’s not talented, not relevant? Music means something to the individual, just as art pieces. Songs have no intrinsic value. But their value is measured by the listener. Obviously Vedder’s songs have a lot of value to a lot of people. I’d like to see you do that for so long and still big a huge name in the music world.

Canadian Boy | 4/3/2008, 7:54 pm EST

Everybody is entitled to their opinion!!! Eddie Vedder is an amazing singer & songwriter.

Now let’s all get along!!! No need for name calling.

Anonymous | 4/3/2008, 9:22 pm EST

I was there. Boring and unispired. The crowd was the best part of this show. Disappointing.

Dude | 4/3/2008, 9:47 pm EST

Solo shows require a discipline and demeanour akin to zen practice. If you don’t get it, you probably never will. I’m sure nickelback is dedicating a show somewhere for you.

Stevo | 4/3/2008, 10:01 pm EST

Eddie Vedder not ‘relavent’?

I don’t think so – he is as revelant today as he ever was!

After hearing his work on ‘into the wild’ i am now really looking forward to the next PJ record.

mindanarchist | 4/4/2008, 2:56 am EST

great account, I feel like I was there! Wish I had been there.

MusicLover | 4/4/2008, 8:17 am EST

I think Kurt’s Corpse (gee, I wonder the source of THIS guy’s bitterness) and Jeremy (might they be the same person?!) need to grow up. This adolescent nonsense gets old…we have all grown up, along with Vedder, who happens to be extremely talented and soulful. You don’t have to like his music, but get over the grunge grudge already. I mourn Kurt too, and he was a talented, although tormented, soul – but Eddie is not to blame for his demise…and has spoken highly and sadly of Kurt. They would undoubtedly have a respectful and fond relationship had Kurt been able to hold up under his demons.
And Anonymous…(brave of you to remain so, by the way)…I think you should not claim to be in a place in order to bash someone when in fact you were not. Of all the things people could claim about Vedder, boring and uninspired are the least plausible or credible.
I think it’s telling that people have a need to bash Vedder..and I think if he were boring and uninspired no one would feel compelled to, and no one would care enough to.

Matthew777 | 4/4/2008, 9:14 am EST

Eddie Vedder is one of the greatest frontmen of all time. As he gets older his musical abilities become better and better. Pearl Jam is the greatest American rock band of all time!!!!
If Kurt Cobain wasnt selfish maybe we could rag on his later work too cause I am sure it would be a lot different than Nevermind.

What an amazing show! Vedder is a classy frontman doing his own thing as GOOD if not BETTER than with this band. While the venue may not have been best for acoustics he kept us captivated with his stories and his lifefacing depression and the “dark days”. The saddest thing is the pathetic losers who had to be “poser’s and kept yelling ridiculous childish comments out on stage. I hope to God you fools go to a Nickelback concert or some venue at Richards on Richards and stick to your own loser turf. Really – poor Vedder had to be humiliated by those 30 or 40 fools.
Thank you for enduring and playing a rock solid 2.5 hours!

Jeff D | 4/4/2008, 12:03 pm EST

I was there and he was great. You cant discount his voice no matter what. He made tons of mistakes but that endears him to me more. He is just like the rest of us trying to find a place in the world. Excellent show. Liam Finn was great too.

Cree Nations | 4/4/2008, 12:04 pm EST

I think this was one of the greatest concerts I have ever been to. It was so intimate and soulful. Edward is a gentleman and a scholar and we are all lucky and privleged to hear his music. Vancouver represented. The venue, preshow and people were amazing.
Thank you!

Well put Gali Bro

JenVed | 4/4/2008, 2:31 pm EST

I’m so excited to see him in LA!

Kurt's Corpse | 4/4/2008, 11:47 pm EST

Just a bunch of left-wing Nazis, you are.

Eddie Vedder is this…Eddie Vedder is that….

Why don’t you look to your parents, children, or people you meet on the streets for inspiration?? Why do you have to look at some plastic diety – and empty suit, if you will – for inspiration???

Not saying he’s a bad guy – not at all. But folks….he’s not Jim Morrison….not Dylan….hell, he’s not even David Gray…

debra | 4/5/2008, 2:28 pm EST

eddie vedder rocks, the poet of our times.so anyone that does not get into the music apparently doesnt listen to the words.love em

Greg | 4/5/2008, 2:30 pm EST

“a city not too far north of his native Seattle”?? I thought he was born somewhere in Illinois. But no matter where he was born, he is indeed a great man, greater even than the lyricist or the musician in him.

Kurt’s Corpse, get a life! (if it were only possible!)

Eddie is amazing. I live on the other side of the world and so wish I could have been in that room to hear those amazing songs. Hats off ED!

maya | 4/6/2008, 10:11 pm EST

I saw him last night in Santa Cruz and it was amazing. His voice is soulful and his presence is amazing. He was wonderful. I have seen a LOT of shows in my time and this ranks in the top. Liam was also cool. Thanks to Eddie for a great time… let’s do it again!

Lennox | 4/6/2008, 10:16 pm EST

Hey Kurt’s Corpse, who’s David Gray?

PMC | 4/7/2008, 11:40 am EST

Way better than Morrison, Up there with Dillion as a song writer and a phenominal performer. Not only that, he’s generally a nice guy. He care’s about people which is what has led to all of his “activism” even If I disagree with him I respect his passion. He’s remarkably humble as rock stars go especially of his talent level and he dosen’t take himself too seriously which is more than I can say for most of them. It’s a joy to watch him perform. I hope they all go as well for the people who haven’t had a chance to see the show yet.

carpoolio | 4/7/2008, 7:41 pm EST

Saw the show in Santa Cruz. Awesome!! Eddie rules.

Liam Finn was also great – I’d see him again if he comes through the bay area.

zelmo | 4/7/2008, 10:37 pm EST

I just dont understand where “Kurt’s Corpse” is coming from. An obvious depressed old Nirvana fan who has some unfinished vengence with Pearl Jam. Listen I loved Nirvana, key word, “Loved.” The fact is for that past 17 years there hasnt been a more influential band then Pearl Jam. Who stayed true to their fans batteling ticketmaster all those years, keeping their prices at the lowest you can go (same price as a strokes or kings of leon ticket) when they could charge Rollingstones prices. Eddie has now reached the genre of Dylan and Morrison, if not surpassing Morrison in many catagories. The guy does not receive the credit deserving of one of rocks most influential, passionate, and cares about his fans that has ever graced this planet. If you cant see that then you have obviously taken your obsession for Nirvana and have turned it into a forever cursed crutch to appreciate someone who only comes around once. Eddie Vedder will forever be remembered as one of rocks truely greats. And there is no limit or say on where he will end up in history. Respect.

J-Dawg | 4/24/2008, 9:18 pm EST

Kurt & Jeremy – you can go visit Cobain right now. I understand you miss him, so figure out how to go visit and do so. Quit trying to validate your life through this posting.

Eddie, keep up the good work!

eks | 8/12/2008, 9:13 pm EST

VEDDER beats Cobain anyday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what was the whole grudge thing cobain had on him anyway??? Anyone who doesn’t like pearl jam most likely doesn’t like himself :) im serious, do your little observation and you’ll come to this conclusion :) )).

Anonymous | 9/26/2008, 12:13 pm EST

I always see this guy “Kurt’s Corpse” post on pearl jam story’s angrily….are you holding some sort of 15 year grudge that your favorite band died and pearl jam is still going strong? Everyone agrees Nirvana was revolutionary, they don’t need you to fight for them… Pearl Jam, however is one of the most beloved bands of the past 20 years and will undoubtedly be hall of famers… you need to stop competing and just appreciate all good music

WWKurtD | 1/10/2009, 8:48 pm EST

WEll I havent had a chance to catch a PearlJam concert lately but always have loved Nirvana and PearlJam. (But thats not supposed to be!) I loved the movie Into The Wild and the soundtrack Eddie provided was very heartfelt! All you young corporate influenced hipsters just need to stop all the crazy comments. If you like Kurt cool if you like Eddie too fine. Its the music!! They both had great messages. When was the last time RS was relevant! They are an assembly of corporate robots that all act and think the same. Thats by design…
