The Who Prep Covers Album

4/2/08, 5:40 pm EST

The Who are planning a collection of vintage R&B covers, similar to the Motown and James Brown songs they performed early on in their career. “We’re digging through lots of material and seeing what will work,” says producer T Bone Burnett, who expects to travel to London this fall to begin recording. “There’s an incredible treasury of songs in the mode of what they used to play. Not ‘Heat Wave’ [an early favorite of the band], but ones that people probably haven’t heard of.” Pete Townshend may also write new material for the project. “It might be a combination of both,” Burnett says. “We’re still turning it over.” In other Who news, the band will perform on July 12th in Los Angeles for VH1’s Rock Honors.

The good news hurray! for a second new WHO album—-but if you just do covers–you ignore the great songwriting of Pete Townshend that’s one of the main factors Pete’s great songs!—–as long as they are in the studio anyway–and all warmed up from a couple years of working on the road and the last album–heck with T-Bone producing they could churn out two albums in a couple months and let T Bone sit there and do all the monotonous stuff—the covers will be great but not at the expense of more songs from Pete! bang out both in a couple months—I smell two albums here—Pete just said a few weeks ago he was writing new songs for what he called a more conventional WHO album…WE WANT BOTH AND WE WANT IT NOW!!!!—do a double album–covers like the early WHO on one disc and Petes new songs on the other—-it’s insane to not get to Pete’s new songs—I smell a double album or two albums whaddya think ?

In many ways, they are even more fascinating in their 60’s than they were in their youth! Go Pete and Rog! (Zak Starkey is an amazing drummer, and Pete’s brother Simon is a talent also!) Pino Pallidino can’t fill John Entwistle’s shoes (nobody can) but he adds a new dimension to The Who!

I agree with the new music. Do you think they will rerecord their cover of the Batman TV Theme? Check it out if you can find it.

Down with whatever the Who does!
Pete is God. New Music please.
