The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

4/2/08, 1:22 pm EST

Dolly Parton mentored the nine remaining Idol hopefuls last night, which led to some stellar moments (Michael Johns’ moving “It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right”), unsurprising performances (Kristy Lee Cook, hanging tough in her country wheelhouse) and fabulous Dolly quotes like “He’s kind of funky looking” (on Jason Castro) and “She’s not Shyesha, that’s for sure” (on Ms. Mercado). There were postcards from Castro’s loveable stalker, a compliment for Kristy Lee Cook’s pedicure (from, um, Ryan Seacrest) and compliments for Paula Abdul’s hair (from a very thankful Brooke White), but for the night’s best moments, watch these quick clips:

5. David Cook addresses that pesky “originality” issue with a mini press conference and another solid song.

4. Paula Abdul hangs tight to what she knows for sure.

3. Randy says David Archuleta is back, but wasn’t he “back” last week? Archuleta is no longer “the Bindi Irwin of AI” — he is now its Jay-Z.

2. One of these things is not like the others. Seriously, when will we find out what Carly Smithson did to piss off Cowell?

1. Syesha Mercado cheats and covers a Whitney Houston song.

Carly’s red pants and boots were not too flattering, but the black satin top was nice, but what was worse than Carly’s outfit was Kristy Lee Cooks turquoise and brown theme, two colors that are yuk together, and her hair was the most unsexy way you could possibly have worn it. It looked like she was all sweaty after doing the dishes in “washup liquid”. Brown nailpolish to go with this! More yuk. Fire all the stylists this year. All the idols looked bad. Michael’s neck was showing under his ascot. Leave Kristy’s hair down for the rest of this contest, that is, if she makes it through in that nightgown with leather trim. Turquoise and white–yes, turquoise and black, yes, but never with brown, Puke.

For someone I’ve seen as middle of the pack in the top 12 (i.e. a 6th position), she got my top vote last night. Will someone tell the shallow Simon that it’s not a contest against the cover artist. If it was, they all failed.
byw…It’s not a Whitney Houston song just because it’s her trademark. Whitney covered Dolly Parton’s song.

Simon was indeed harsh to Carly with his wardrobe comment, however not entirely wrong. If more attention was given to the performer and less attention to the tatoo the fans wouldn’t be distracted. By now we all know it’s there. I want to be wowed with her voice and see her presented as the star we all know she could be.

Thank you for the comment Sandy. Ok no more Whitney covers for me. I’ll make sure I disappear as you say.

Can someone please tell Syesha Mercado that she is not, and never will be able to do justice to Whitney Houston songs. Please let her poof! be gone.
