News Ticker: Mariah & Madonna, John Lennon, Elvis Costello, Kanye West

4/2/08, 3:02 pm EST

  • Both Mariah Carey and Madonna made Billboard news this week as both singers bypassed Elvis Presley to make chart history. By scoring her eighteenth number one single with “Touch My Body,” Carey passed Presley for number two on the all-time number ones list (the Beatles, who had twenty singles chart-toppers, hold tight at the top spot). Meanwhile, Madonna usurped Presley as the sole owner of the record of the most career Top Ten singles, as her “Four Minutes” became her thirty-seventh.
  • A lost John Lennon song called “Now and Then” may make an appearance on an upcoming tribute to the “fifth Beatle” Neil Aspinall. The home recording would reportedly require a restoration, though there is no word whether Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr would participate in a re-recording of the song.
  • The Sundance Channel is set to air the show Elvis Costello With…, a thirteen-episode talk show hosted by Costello. Elton John will serve as executive producer of the show.
  • Planning to attend the Glow in the Dark tour in San Antonio or just need to schedule a business meeting next Thursday in Spokane, Washington? Let Kanye West and his new travel website be your guide.

The song “Now and Then” isn’t actually from the Beatles-era; i t was a home recording by John Lennon during the Dakota years. It was, however, attempted by the surviving Beatles around the time of Anthology, and abandoned.

It’s about time. For the life of me I can’t figure out what is taking the remaining Beatles so long to finish off a track. Everyone and their brother can produce a mash-up or remix of a song with simple tools like garage band. (There’s already a damn good finished version of “Now and Then” posted on Youtube by a fan. For some reason Paul and Ringo can’t get their lazy asses in the studio to polish off a song that a 12 year old could finish in a day!

Here’s an idea guys; how ’bout giving the fans a brand new Beatles album!!!!! It’s only been 13 years since “Free as a Bird” and ” Real Love”.
