Spring Music Preview: Weezer Unveil Familiar Title for New Album

4/1/08, 1:08 pm EST

The new Weezer album will be called… Weezer. For the third time in six albums, the band is going the eponymous route, except this time around the band are referring to their new one as the “Red Album.” Comprised of sessions produced by Rick Rubin, Jacknife Lee and themselves, frontman Rivers Cuomo says, “We put a lot of emphasis on blowing our minds with creative freakouts,” as evidenced by the probable first single “Pork and Beans.” To read more about Weezer’s June 17th release and many other upcoming albums, look for our comprehensive Spring Music Preview on stands tomorrow. Check back for an expanded version at RollingStone.com on Friday.

Saw them in concert in Chicago last night. One of the best lives shows I’ve seen. The new album is amazing. Bad mouthing the Red Album is only going to make me assume you value yourself and others by the number of obscure bands you have on your iPod.

Someone... | 9/28/2008, 6:10 pm EST

Weezer is one of the best alternative bands ever. Theyve had hits like say it aint so, buddy holly, island in the sun, beverly hills, and we are all on drugs. just because the album name you arent going to support them anymore.
That’s stupid!!!
The new album has a lot of good songs, and all of their other albums have, you obviously haven’t listened to enough of their music to judge them…

It doesn’t matter to me what anyone’s opinion of Weezer’s music is. I just appreciate the band staying together and putting out this music. ‘The Angel and the One’ gives me goosebumps, ‘Get Dangerous’ rocks & the lyrics make me laugh, and ‘Heart Songs’ tells a great story with a rocking ending. Thanks, Weezer. I look forward to seeing the band live again soon.

i like how some people are so judgmetal …every band has a bad album , that doesnt mean u should sell them out without even a listen.

Drew | 4/15/2008, 4:41 pm EST

I realized something. They’ve released a self titled album every 7 years (1994, 2001, 2008). I think we’ll have the yellow album in 2015

i think Maladroit is very underrated. it’s not as good as blue and pinkerton, but it’s pretty decent.

i don’t care for green and make believe much, either. I have a feeling that this new album is going to be either very good or very bad.

Tickitytak | 4/10/2008, 8:07 pm EST

i’m looking forward to this album. going with another self-titled album is an awesome idea.

it’s really cool considering the three colors they’ve used so far are the primary colors of light and their songs have been regarded by many musicians as the primary base for pop rock songs. basically, if you study weezer you’ll learn how to write a catchy song.

they don’t need anymore self-titled albums after this one, and i suspect this’ll be their last.

PaulMako | 4/7/2008, 12:58 pm EST

Something tells me this album is going to be good. Personaly I think it’s cool if it’s going to be the ‘Red’ album, a nice theme to their albums. I doubt people complained as much when they did the same for ‘Green’. They’re not stupid. Rivers would have seen the response to Make Belive and I do think that it is going to be different. I don’t want another Pinkerton, that’s a classic that captured that time in his life. I just hope it’s a solid album of good songs. I’m still a fan.

hiyah! | 4/7/2008, 8:36 am EST

What ever happened to true blue weezer fans, sticking by your guys through and through?

Eric | 4/4/2008, 9:42 pm EST

I think it’s gonna be a classic.

El Viator | 4/3/2008, 5:59 pm EST

So this isn’t a April Fools Joke, seeing that Wikipedia still has it up that the new album’s Red. I’ll buy it, but to hear this one’s Weezer again is disappointing.

doc worm | 4/2/2008, 8:28 pm EST

you haters are morons.. theyre a great band and this guy

Red Album? I don’t think I’m going to support the new album or listen to their music anymore. Rivers always thinks of the most fucked up ways to lose fans, and this stunt just lost another one.

lighten up Francis… Im sure they’ll lose a ton of sleep over a self important douche like you who thinks that they’re making a statement by not buying an album..

Rivers Cuomo | 4/2/2008, 10:57 am EST

Hope you will care about Weezer long enough to hear our follow up effort: The Yellow Album. It’s a concept album about my fascination with Asian women.

Anthony Paul | 4/2/2008, 5:00 am EST

lolz

Justin Tumino | 4/2/2008, 4:59 am EST

Yup I’d TOTALLY blow them all off, too bad I live in Canada though.

Chris Brown | 4/2/2008, 4:32 am EST

Weezer is a smart band, they pump out pop music hits and continually recreate themselves to add new fans and sell more records. Every one of there albums Are good, some not great, but all have good songs. Just take them for what they are. A good band.

Nathan | 4/1/2008, 11:36 pm EST

New Weezer albums used to be blind buys for me (or deaf buys), but after that last one, I’ll be giving this one a good sampling first.

Michael Roffman | 4/1/2008, 11:03 pm EST

qwerty, I have to disagree with you. “Perfect Situation”, “Hold Me”, and even “Beverly Hills” were excellent songs that demonstrated some talented songwriting.

Sorry.

Fill | 4/1/2008, 10:06 pm EST

This is just R.S. trying to get back at albumsix.com for fooling them with the whole “Tout Ensemble” spoof. Nice try though.

qwerty | 4/1/2008, 7:38 pm EST

Why do people even care about this band anymore? They made some great albums ten years ago — and nothing good since.

Make Believe was one of the worst albums by any “respectable” band in history. Another year of “BEH-VUH-LEE HILLZ…”? No thx, Weezer.

Sacamus | 4/1/2008, 7:19 pm EST

ajl, you are waaaay out of date. That game is over, we’re on “4-legged farm animal” now.

ajl | 4/1/2008, 6:32 pm EST

Has to be April Fool’s…no corroboration on the Weezer website, and Rivers even went so far on the website to say it would be a one-word title that was twelve letters long, started with T, and ended with R.

LayBuh. | 4/1/2008, 5:17 pm EST

why not call it Six?

such a sexxxxxy number!

Anonymous | 4/1/2008, 5:07 pm EST

Weezer is the best band in the world and everyone else sucks.

Toilet Trained | 4/1/2008, 5:04 pm EST

Let me guess.. it’s called the Red Album because it’ll have a red background with the band members in the forefront. Very original Weezy. The first single “Pork and Beans” alone will make me want to fart and shit my pants.

Anonymous | 4/1/2008, 4:50 pm EST

Totally lousy April Fools joke.

“April Fools! We gargle balls!”

MarriedToMileyCyrus | 4/1/2008, 4:46 pm EST

Is That Even An Album Coming This Year?,Something Tells Me It Ain’t!,Plus…If It Is New…Good!..Cause Weezer Has Not Put Anything Out In While!

sal rabinowitz | 4/1/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Time to pull the plug and drop the greatest hits. They had their day but it’s time to move on. I suppose there is the slim chance they could pull another Pinkerton (and I’m not saying make another album that sounds like Pinkerton, I’m saying try to come up with something different from all their other records which all sound the same). Easy for me to say seeing how I’ve never made a record, but they’re the ones putting themselves out there. Oh what a jaded music fan I’ve become.

Nick | 4/1/2008, 4:13 pm EST

It’s TOTALLY got to be a scam. It’s April 1…and that idea is LAME

BenHogan77 | 4/1/2008, 3:06 pm EST

this better not be an april fool’s joke. I have a feeling it is, and if that’s the case I will be livid with rage! I’ve spent months with other boardies on albumsix.com speculating over this and we don’t like being played with!

Nick | 4/1/2008, 2:20 pm EST

is this an April Fools joke?

RGB | 4/1/2008, 2:03 pm EST

THE LEAKY LEEEK reports that there will be a four disc followup coming by christmas, titled CMYK.

Anonymous | 4/1/2008, 1:54 pm EST

for some reason im pumped. weezer will always have a soft spot in my heart, even when they pull stuff like “we are all on drugs”.

Los | 4/1/2008, 1:39 pm EST

That is hilarious… After so many speculations it turns out to be yet another self-titled record. Let’s just hope its better than Make Believe. Go Weez
