Is “Chinese Democracy” Close? Axl Rose Gets Top Management Team

3/28/08, 9:50 am EST

The folks at Dr. Pepper may be handing out soda sooner than they thought. Yesterday, Axl Rose announced that Guns N’ Roses will now be represented by Irving Azoff (who most recently handled Guns spinoff project Velvet Revolver) and Andy Gould. Rose’s band hasn’t had management since December 2006, when he split from former manager Merck Mercuriadis. Axl didn’t reveal any other details, but the watch for the 13-years-in-the-making album Chinese Democracy is back on. Azoff, the former top executive at MCA, has managed Christina Aguilera, Eagles and Van Halen, among others. Gould is a former member of talent agency the Firm and has most notably managed Rob Zombie. It’s probably safe to say that if these two guys can’t whip Axl into shape, then Chinese Democracy will likely remain a legend.

I am not for a GN’R reunion. I think it would reduce GN’R to a nostalgic act and they are leaps and bounds better than that. I have seen the new GN’R twice and musically speaking the new guys are better. Robin Finck plays with such soul and emotion. Richard Fortus is brilliant in a Johnny Thunders kind of way. Tommy Stinson is punk rock royalty and brilliant as well. Brian Mantia has worked with Tom Waits, (that in itself is genius), is an incredible drummer.

Anyone looking for the old GN’R won’t find it. But if you are looking for thoughtful, passionate, meaningful music, you will find it. This band is great, plain and simple. Give them a chance. You won’t be disappointed.

Let’s face it they all belong where they originally were, the magic and chemistry always lingers.
both bands stp and gnr are superb - nothing wrong with “hired hands” or super groups, but it just aint the same.i think scott has got it right going back to stp, axl should realize how important his members are to gnr and should sort it NOW, i’m sure he would’nt want to finish his days or the rest of them not getting this sorted, there all a bloody family for ch sake!!
Bring on it both bands!

What’s unbelievable is that you took the time to post on a thread about a band you don’t like. Talk about ‘tard!!

yuck | 3/30/2008, 11:33 am EST

GNR sucked way back when,,,,,and you ‘tards are waiting for this album??? Unbelievable.

Hopefully the record gets released as soon as possible and gives a shot in the arm to the rest of the rock music scene

I saw G’N'R on the Japanese leg of their tour last summer. They actually showed up, and played just over 2 hours. I cleaned up, as everyone I know laughed and said they’ll never show when I bought a ticket, and wagered me that they would not materialize. Another surprise…the show was pretty good. Straight ahead, not a lot of banter, no hissy fits. Complaint: there seemed to be too many people running around the stage (4 guitar players seemed like overkill…and they ALL played protracted solos, during which Mr. Axl would disappear somewhere for what seemed like a little too long). That aside, they played well, and got in all the standards, as well as a dose of Chinese Democracy.
Surprisingly again, the stuff sounded alright. I haven’t totally given up on them. They should really haul ass, and get the bloody thing out, already.

Actually, Chinese Democracy is exactly representative of a reinvigorated GN’R. The new stuff maintains that melodic, guitar driven rock formula of old school GN’R, but pulls in a different set of influences. “Better” is the best rock and roll song I’ve heard in a long time. Incredibly catchy, addictively catchy actually, and heavy at the same time. What you call “watered down” versions of “Estranged” are actually evolved versions of the song, adding different elements and influences.

Furthermore, if anyone thinks that a manager of Irving Azoff’s track record would agree to manage an artist that they didn’t think would be successful, they need to take a look at his resume.

at this point, chineese democracy is hardly representative of some kind of fresh, new, envigorated version of gnr. I heard some of the songs a few years ago and the the best of the bunch sounds like a watered down version of estranged. the worst ones are truely terrible. Electronic beats and heavy vocal effects. I think the title was “Better”. If VR are done, I’m all for scrapping Chineese Democracy and reuniting the band.
I think Chineese Democracy is more fun as a mysterious ledgend instead of rock’s biggest let down.

Actually, Izzy played with the new lineup of Guns N’ Roses in 2006 and him and Axl are quite close.

If you use Slash’s book as a source of reference, keep in mind that he was a hardcore alcoholic for nearly 2 decades (memory problems) and that he’s never been exactly honest.

I like both the old lineup and the new one and am not on one side. Put your squabble to rest and realize that if the old lineup got back together it’d purely be for nostalgia.

So a new band with talented players hungry to prove themselves or holding on to the nostalgia you felt in 1991?

Hmm. Easy decision for me.

Maybe Axl realizes enough time has elasped and he needs to really, really try and get this album out. First the thing w/ Dr. Pepper and now thi — it has to mean something, and if it eventually doesn’t well I’ll be uberly pissed off, but not all that suprised either, unfortunately. What is interesting is that this management team used to represent Velvet Revolver, but now is just representing Scott Weiland. Weird.

Dizzle | 3/28/2008, 2:30 pm EST

What I think would be hilarious, is if Chinese Democracy comes out and it’s a complete masterpiece! Could you imagine after all the years of shit talking and Axl bashing, this biatch comes out sounding like Sgt. Peppers!?!?

Prolly not, though…

Swingline | 3/28/2008, 2:01 pm EST

I once heard Latrell Sprewell say it took him 2 hours before and after a basketball game to get his corn-rows done. If you take away all that time in the last 13 years, maybe it’s only taken Axl roughly 8-9 years of actually working on the album.

Super Spinchter | 3/28/2008, 1:49 pm EST

Hey Todd, Axl already looks like a dork. Just look at his pic. Any white guy with that kind of hair style has gotta be a dork.

Nathan | 3/28/2008, 12:31 pm EST

It would be so funny if this album turns out to be a total piece of shit.

G | 3/28/2008, 12:23 pm EST

Izzy would never do it and the last page of Slash’s book said…for the last time the reasons I will never reunite with Axl are as follows and he then proceeded to list them. Plus Axl still has and wants full control over everything GNR related. Everyone else is just a hired hand. Anytime there is a GNR show it will just be the Axl Rose All-Star band performing the sounds of GNR.

Todd | 3/28/2008, 11:55 am EST

This record better be good or Axl is gonna look like a real dork. I love GnR

Just a take... | 3/28/2008, 11:52 am EST

“Appetite” and “Lies” GnR would be a sight to see again. They were hungry, dangerous and exciting for rock.
I don’t know if you can ever duplicate that again, even if you get the exact same guys together.
I think it’s what we’d all want to see if these guys got back together…
It’s like bringing the Sex Pistols back today, the music sounds good, Rotten’s still got the attitude, but it only leaves you longing for that chance to have seen them when they were helping pave a movement instead of remembering it.

S.H. | 3/28/2008, 11:28 am EST

I agree. It is odd how within less than a month we’ve had Velvet Revolver break up rumors, renewed Chinese Democracy talk, and now all the guys are under the same management team. They know if they can make the magic of a full reunion happen, they’re sitting on as big a gold mine as a zeppelin or floyd reunion tour.

Mega Balls | 3/28/2008, 11:24 am EST

Hey Dr. Pepper - make mine a Cherry flavored Dr. Pepper or a Diet Dr. Pepper beverage please preferrably ice cold with a straw. Thanks.

Yesterdays... | 3/28/2008, 11:21 am EST

13 Years?
I hope the CD doesn’t come with a “making of” doc, it’ll be longer than “Das Boot”

C.T. | 3/28/2008, 10:49 am EST

I find it curious that GN’R signed with a management team that also represents Velvet Revolver. I’m not one to jump to conclusions and that is probably just a coincidence but it is interesting. I would imagine that a reunion tour would probably be made much easier if the company representing all parties was the same. It may mean nothing but then again….
