Tour Preview: Def Leppard Admit “If You Play New Songs, The Audience Walks Out”

3/27/08, 1:58 pm EST

For the first time in six years, Def Leppard are hitting the road armed with new tunes, and guitarist Phil Collen is pragmatic about how people treat new work from a veteran band. “You’d really like to go out there and play all your new shit off the new record, but you can’t do that, because they’d walk out,” he says. “It’s like when you go and see the Stones and Keith Richards starts doing a couple of songs, and everyone goes and buys a T-shirt.”

The tour, which kicks off this week, will serve to warm up audiences for the forthcoming Songs from the Sparkle Lounge, the band’s tenth studio album. Collen acknowledges that the album’s title — derived from the band’s backstage rehearsal area, where the songs were hashed out — doesn’t quite have the pop of Pyromania or Hysteria, but it gets the job done. “[The title is] not very rock & roll, but for some reason, we don’t really care anymore about that. ‘Oh, it has to be cool, this has to be a strong title.’ Fuck it. This is very relevant for what it is, and that’s why we’ve done it.”

New songs like “Go” and “Nine Lives” (which features Tim McGraw on its studio incarnation) will be sprinkled amongst the stadium staples “Rock of Ages,” “Pour Some Sugar On Me” and “Armageddon It.” When it comes to giving the old songs a run-through before the tour, things are decidedly more relaxed than in the early days. “We actually sat around on the couch watching football, and we’d play through tiny little amps and have this little Roland drumkit that would go through speakers, and we’d rehearse the whole set like that,” Collen says. “It’s a real drag rehearsing these songs we’ve done a million times, and there’s no audience there, so it’s a bit like pulling teeth.”

As usual, the band’s family members will be in tow, including Rory, Collen’s eighteen-year-old son. Rory has been on the road with the band since he was born, and went through the standard “my parents embarrass me” phase. “That changed just before high school,” Collen says. “All his buddies at school said it was cool because they saw me on Most Metal Moments or something like that on VH1.”

DefFan4Life | 5/9/2008, 3:29 pm EST

you guys bashing the leps must be babies. I took my 3 sons to see them last August and they loved it, the youngest of which is 11 (my 67th def leppard concert). So unless you’ve gone to see them…and actually bought a def leppard album, go whine somewhere else. Open your little minds! By the way, don’t even get me started on the amazing Mr. Rick Allen!!!

Leppfanforlife. | 4/11/2008, 7:44 pm EST

Everyone on here is right to some extent except for Bozo who chose an appropriat name for him/herself. I guess my only comment it don’t knock it unitl you try it. They have alwasy ruled and will continue to do so.

Max | 4/10/2008, 6:00 pm EST

I have every album, cd and granted, just like anything else some songs are weaker but there is something worth while on every one. At least they are willing to try new material, at this point in their career they can. I’ve heard Nine Lives and they still know how to rock. I’ll pay to see them and buy the new cd.

LepLass4654 | 4/3/2008, 11:55 pm EST

Anonymous & Bozo - Why the hell are you people on here if you don’t like DL???? Are you brain damaged or something??? It’s okey to like them…are you ashamed to admit it??? Why else would you even bother posting stupid remarks unless you do! Dumb arses!!! :)
Repeat after me DEF LEP ROCKS!!!

Have a great day!

Sharon | 4/2/2008, 9:27 am EST

They have always and will always be one of my favorite bands-I took my 14 yr old daughter last night and they came out and signed autos. and took pics with us. They’re AWESOME!! Even my 14 year old knows great music when she hears it-she too is now a huge fan. To Bozo: What will you do if you ever lose an arm or a leg? Nothing close to what Rick has done I’m sure. But, hopefully, it that ever happens to you, you won’t run into jerks with no human compassion who call you a “freak”.

stef | 3/30/2008, 9:37 pm EST

Long Live Rock N Roll | 3/30/2008, 3:09 pm EST

Morning Bell | 3/29/2008, 7:41 pm EST

I never thought I would like anything by Def Leppard. But I have to admit I do actually LOVE a couple of their new tracks. Can’t believe it, but they really rocks! (Go + Cruise Control)

Hank is a moron | 3/29/2008, 2:27 pm EST

Go back to sleep hank. You don’t deserve to listen to the almighty Leppard. The new album kicks ass and we can see that bothers you.

Paige(PCS) | 3/29/2008, 1:35 pm EST

I cant wait to see them in Estero! Their new album sounds great, and everyone should give it a try. Maybe they should go undercover, as a different name, so there is no bias. I can guarantee you people will like it, and say “Wow, thats great!” :-) I wish everyone could enjoy them just as much as me! There is such a wonderful feeling inside those CD cases just waiting to be discovered. Have you opened them yet?….. Well maybe you should…! :-)

AND FOR BOZO CALL RICK ALLEN A FREAK AGAIN and I WILL COME AND RIP YOUR ARM OFF AND BEAT YOU WITH IT.
I would LIKE TO SEE YOU PLAY drums and do what he does with one arm.

Dude | 3/29/2008, 11:51 am EST

Def Leppard is one of the best bands ever. I, for one, can’t wait for the band’s new stuff. They should have the confidence to play it out on the road.

Peace.

Geezes Freak | 3/29/2008, 1:09 am EST

So let me get this straight, nothing decent in 20 years?? People who say that are indeed living in the past. But they are the same ones who didn’t like Slang or X just because they didn’t sound just like Hysteria or Pyromania. Open your ears, free your mind, and shave off the mullet. Def Leppard still rocks because they aren’t afraid to grow up and change, maybe some of you should try it on for size.

Hank Chinaski | 3/28/2008, 5:16 pm EST

“Until you’ve heard their entire body of work and seen them live in recent years, please don’t trash them.”

First of all I don’t like rules, especially from people with suspect intelligence!

Without wasting a penny on a new CD or a concert ticket: ever since Pyromania, they’ve been a washed out top 40 NIGHTMARE more interested in radio airplay than dare I say (it’s been 25 years but still,) ROCKING!

Do you also keep your Bryan Adams catalog current as well? You probably own every Bon Jovi album also!

I’ll trash them all I damned well please. I do not, however, have any disrecpect for Rick Allen. To be able to completely relearn playing the drums minus an arm, is nothing short of extraordinary.

He deserves all the credit in the world. But I’d respect him even more if he started a band that couldn’t make a nickel, but put THE MUSIC above all else.

Marc | 3/28/2008, 3:21 pm EST

Always an underrated, misunderstood band and their post-Hysteria music is wonderful. Until you’ve heard their entire body of work and seen them live in recent years, please don’t trash them. Horrible, insensitive remark about the drummer from previous post.

“I buy every new thing they come out with and love it all! You all that only listen to Def Leppard for their past hits are missing out on great music so just stick to listening to your top 40 crap and leave the real music to the real fans!”

Oooookaaaayyyyy!!!!

MICFAC | 3/28/2008, 8:14 am EST

once great band - they havent wrote a decent song for 20 years - so i aint holding out much hope for the new album - but ill still go and see their joint tour with whitesnake - nostalgia rock!

Cheesecrop | 3/28/2008, 6:16 am EST

With the track record they have, I know I would be willing to give their new stuff a listen. They’ve always had something worthwhile on almost all their albums.

stef | 3/28/2008, 1:29 am EST

EGL | 3/28/2008, 1:05 am EST

Saw them tonight in Greensboro, NC. It was AMAZING!!! I’ve seen them 10 or more times and this was one of their best!

hollywood | 3/27/2008, 9:15 pm EST

This’ll be my second time seeing them in concert… I’m pretty psyched to hear their new stuff :D

mcache | 3/27/2008, 9:10 pm EST

Sweet….. another Def Leppard Tour - I just hope the drum tech remebers to divide the number of drum sticks needed by 2

Bozo | 3/27/2008, 4:12 pm EST

Agree to the below. Fans who are still living in the past will see these guys just to hear their hits and the one-armed freak drummer perform. No one buys their new shit any more.

Jungleland | 3/27/2008, 3:05 pm EST

This is a band that people see to hear the hits. 2-3 new songs max boys….

Anonymous | 3/27/2008, 2:17 pm EST

i think the reason people leave def leppard shows is b/c they suck donkey balls
