Anti-Emo Violence Plagues Mexico as Attacks Increase

3/27/08, 4:10 pm EST

A wave of anti-emo violence has descended on Mexico. The first reported instance occurred on March 7th, when 800 young people came to the city of Queretaro with the sole purpose of finding emo kids to beat up. The anti-emo movement has propagated from message boards and social-network sites led by youths who dislike “the emo look and attitude.” A week after the Queretaro incident, a group comprised of punks and rockabillies faced off against the emo crowd. In response to the attacks, the emo population staged a silent march asking for peace and tolerance through Queretaro’s main center on March 15th. The march was organized by a Mexico City gay-rights organization that feels the anti-emo attacks are fueled by homophobia. The problem is not only restricted to Mexico, however: Reports from Chile of skinheads fighting emo kids occurred prior to the Mexican violence.

I, personally really hate Emo. I think it is a shallow, histrionic, fashon-concieted trend and the music itself(which I always listen to before I make a judgement) is bland, pretentious, and overly commercial. I feel like rock and roll now is just like the glam/hair bands of the 80’s, but with punk overtones instead of metal. That being said, I dont think its right to assault Emo kids for being different. At all. The punks who attacked those kids forgot the true meaning of punk-acceptence. What pisses me off is that these punks never had to pay their dues as punks. I am 17, and I see many people in my generation the same way. These punks became punks after it was already cool. They forget(or dont even know) that the origional punks had the same problem with jock assholes beating them up, ironically, because THEY were seen as queers. If the Mexican punks had had to pay the price of being an outcast for their right of expression, they wouldnt be beating up on emo kids. Mexican teens were not pioneers of the genre; they never slaved away in rundown clubs or pressed their own vinyl out of the scraps left over from other companies, or in any way paid any debt for punk rock. They forget that punk was supposed to be anti-macho, and these punks have grotesquely twisted that around. They have disgraced punks all over the world with their macho ignorance. I will say one good thing for Emo, and one bad. First, the Emo culture has brought a better acceptence of gays in America….but it still needs work. Second…one thing that frustrates me about emo is that while they claim to be different(respectful) towards women, if you listen to any given Emo song(Fall Out Boy have some great examples of this, as do Panic at the Disco) it simply demonizes the woman. No fresh perspective, or bittersweet longing, just good ol’ tried and true rock and roll misogyny. If anything, they are occasionally worse than, say, Puddle of Mudd, because they are much more poetic and venomous about hating women….

Oh My God, some of you people are so immature. So what if your Emo, Punk, Goth or what ever. You are who you are. Stop fighting over stupid crap and start fighting for the important things like the War or poverty. It’s sad to see this kind of stupid stuff in the world…..
P.S. I Think Scene is sooo stupid

Jelous ppl hating emos.. Hahah.
Pathetic.

Talitha | 6/29/2008, 9:03 pm EST

well all i have to say is that punks shouldn’t be attacking emos they should really understand them, half of you guys are rite just because something is different doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a chance.the world is full of different kinds of people, all races are different, so i think everyone should understand.you might not like how they dress or look because you don’t dress and look like them but if you give them a chance you can find that they can be the nicest and coolest people!take me for example,i listen to any type of music mostly rock though,i love colors but i usually wear black, eyeliner, differnt color converse and shoelaces, and i just like to,people have already categorized me and put me in the category of emo and i don’t kno why,i didn’t kno wearing black, eyeliner, and converse was only what “emos do”,i have been called “different from the regular black girl”since like fourth grade, now i’m in the 11th grade and some people in my school call me “black emo girl!!” and “you stupid black rocker!!”and it used to hurt my feelings but not anymore, first i was called a punk, then a rocker, then a goth, now an emo!!i have alot of friends but some people just won’t take the time to meet me and get to know me cause they already assume that they know what i’m all about, and it’s sad,i’m a very happy girl,i love my parents,i like to hang out with my friends,i’m very friendly, and to me i’m just a regular teenage girl!this is who i am so just except it,but when people think they something different from the “norm” they either get scared, try to kill it or hate it and it’s just sad.

Hillary | 6/24/2008, 12:20 pm EST

I found this out about a month after it happened.
we’re people too, we don’t deserve to be treated that way, no one does, honestly i dont understand when the word “emo” come to mind, people think of it suicidal, depressed freaks, who is whiny, and loves to wear black

OPEN YOUR EYES, JACKA**!! WE’RE PEOPLE TOO!!

emoslicer | 6/20/2008, 12:22 pm EST

emo fucks. call the waahhhhmbulance. why dont more mexican punk kids come to america? cause its too much fun trashing emo kids in mexico. just remember, its down the road, not across the tracks, whiny little shits

Ashley | 6/17/2008, 8:34 pm EST

sorry for posting that twice, i hit the button more than once lol

Ashley | 6/17/2008, 8:32 pm EST

ok , so i have worn a sidebang ever scince i could grow it out… i agree with Lyle i do like the “Emo” music and i love the hair, its just like me waking up in the morning and just straightning my bang, plus i like skinny jeans and converse sneakers… does that make me “emo”? plus, most girls wear eyeliner does that make all girls who do so “EMO?” and the definition of emo is this…
This is a quote ive taken from a website i frequently visit:
“Emo,yes it is short for emotional. But,there is more to emo then hair and looks. Emo is a state of mind. Most people, made them selves appear emo. While in reality, they have to much hope to be emo. Emo is much like goth. But,goth is Darker. Emo is more emotional, harder to fake. Yes,some emos cut themselves, but there is more than that. Emo is one of the hardest things,to explain. People hate emos,b/c they view us as suicidal, cry babies,or just week. That’s NOT what emo is. Suicidal yes,at times. But,don’t judge me for being emo. It’s not what I chose to be. It’s just what I am.”

So do these kids in Mexico deserve this…no those kids are kind, i have one in my class, who has been my friend all year! I havent yet heard what he thinks of it, and well if he thinks its whats best than im going to stick to my own opinion, even if it means losing his friendship…

amy | 6/8/2008, 7:16 pm EST

charlotte’s right this is way out of hand, you shouldn’t be scared of something cuz it’s different.
i also think it’s really funny that the person at the bottom called “Locust” thinks we’re talking about Elmo the puppet from Sesame Street.

Charlotte | 6/8/2008, 7:10 pm EST

Wise up.
Hate is hate, no matter who it’s aimed at.
How much difference is there between, “kill all the Emos” and “kill all the Jews”?
Last time somebody hated a group that much, the Holocaust happened.
This is not Salem, Emos are not witches.
They are not doing anything wrong.
This is the goddamn 21st century!
Drop your ignorance, drop your hate, and accept the fact that just because they are Emo does not mean they are not PEOPLE.
STOP EMO HATE!

Hope | 6/8/2008, 6:00 am EST

Riots are dumb generally, because it affects everyone not just those that are fighting but normal people that have to make a living. The thing thats makes this even stupider is that the kids decide to fight over social labels? Its largescale highschool. There are many other problems in Mexico and even in the US and what are these whiny “punks”, “metalhead”, and “gangsters” fighting about? Emos? That just goes to show how screwed this generation is, instead of fighting for something worthwhile, like poverty, they’re fighting about emos? They are stupid selfish teenagers, that need to get over themselves, because the world has alot more problems that they will have to deal with as they get older, and no one will care if you’re “punk” or emo.

Alex | 6/7/2008, 5:03 pm EST

I’m truelly confused as to what i am lol. i love The Clash, Sex Pistols, Damned ect and also love modern bands like Jimmy Eat World, FOB and also glam rock like Motley Crue, Iron Maiden (more metal) and Pink Floyd… Don’t be scared about who you are, if you feel that punk or metal is dying, then don’t fight, just get over it. Real punk was 70s, metal 80s, grunge 90s and now its a mixture, people, live with it, emo is but one of many cultures that are in fashion today. Peace out.

Corrie Robert Guerin | 5/30/2008, 1:55 am EST

Logic and reason are what separates men from animals. We as human beings forgo emotion for logic and reason.
The EMO kids have willfully denounced logic for emotion and thus are inferior beings and a threat to civilization.
Down with EMO.

holly. | 5/29/2008, 10:15 pm EST

The majority of my school is “emo”. Our school would be gone if we were in mexico. What’s so wrong with “emo” anyways? We are different. So what?

And Im not labeling myself, but its what people lable me, and im like all those “emos”.

Jason | 5/28/2008, 1:48 pm EST

I won’t bother labeling myself, I’m NOT EMO, Honestly, I dislike that whole trend, But what’s going on is sad. I’m sixteen and I understand that if you take away the clothes, the music and everything in the end it’s just Mexicans attacking their own people. There needs to be peace.

EMiLy | 5/28/2008, 10:39 am EST

Brock | 5/20/2008, 9:18 pm EST

This is an example of media covering up for the crimes of non-English speaking whites.

This is gay bashing. Third world homophobia. The manifestation of Mexico’s culture of machismo. These people are targeting gays.

But then the media gets it and doesn’t want to depict hate filled third-worlders for what they really are and then the reader is left scratching his head wondering ‘why in the hell would they do that?’.

Get it together RS. Send Matt Taibbi down there. He’ll say it like it is.

k.b | 5/16/2008, 12:38 pm EST

you know,
people are often times told to be who they want to be, so let them do that.
what if they started coming after you for not being emo?
you people that are against it only because you sterotype them. If thats how they want to be, let them.
whats the violence worth? nothing, its all immaturity.
thats all.

Måne | 5/15/2008, 10:29 am EST

And for all emo haters:
Just because you have no feelings, doesn’t mean you can hurt people who do. Chavs, bite me.

Gloria | 5/1/2008, 7:39 pm EST

Just stop it, all of you.

Have you ever met an emo girl or boy who complains frequently about their life and cuts themself? Probably not. You only read about it on blogs and forums.

You only think that because that’s the effing stereotype. Most emos are just ‘regular’ people who have a life. Everybody gets depressed sometimes, and not only emos cut themselves.

Don’t let stereotypes skew your views. Think for yourself. Emos like the subculture, poser or not, becaue technically everbody is a poser. You all want to be something.

Long live emos

SLC Hardcore | 4/23/2008, 5:05 pm EST

Eric | 4/20/2008, 10:30 pm EST

This is another example of those who prefer violence and uber-masculinity to intellectualism. Emos are facing off against a strand idiots found everywhere; we must affirm the right of all people’s to express themselves in a non-violent manner, and violence against any group has to be rejected. People always fear what they don’t understand.

Te Revolution | 4/18/2008, 7:25 pm EST

emo is all crap. they take others style, they cause drama, the are liars and fake and supposedly so hardcore but cry and threaten to killthemself but never will. join the revolution! put an end to emo and scene kids!

How EMOs are saving America. | 4/17/2008, 4:15 pm EST

The EMO scene kids are more into dealing with and expressing their emotions rather than hurting others. Kids who are more in touch with their emotional side tending to be more, “down to earth”, or “grounded”. The EMO movement is giving kids a platform, or place to express themselves through their music and fashion. As a result of the EMO movement it is now becoming in style to speak out and express your emotions. Examples of this expression are music, fashion, poetry, and art. The benefits of this type of EMO behavior displayed by kids today are profoundly positive. I mean would you rather have kids pulling drive bys, doing drugs, or other illegal activities rather figuring out a way to express their frustrations. The world we live in today is extremely materialistic and commercialized, and today’s kids are getting pretty fed up with that. That’s why the EMOs are increasing in numbers across the world. As a result of the EMO movement there should be a dramatic decrease in teenage violence because of their new found abilities to express themselves. This translates into better young adults entering Americas adult Society.

punks didn’t attack emo kids because of the way they dress or the music they listen to, they attacked emo kids because emo kids have invaded the punk scene and turned it into a corporate shit fest. All you people who keep saying punks are hypocrits have no idea what punk is. Punks dress the way they want to dress. I still have not met a punk with a mohawk. You all need to be educated about punk before you start making idiotic comments.

People is tired of emos not because their looks or their music or their sexual believes, they are tired because they are always claming for attention, and keep doing it and i mean they are always messing up with everybody else, the emos that I know are alway tryin to find to talk to me about one thing “life sucks” and I mean i dont care them, they can do whatever they want but why to mess up with the other peolpe that doesn’t think that life suck

E | 4/10/2008, 10:24 pm EST

I think it’s just ridiculous how bigoted people can be. While I’m not considered to be emo per say I love the music and most of the bands. I also happen to be Hispanic and it’s things like this that remind me why I dislike my culture so much. If I have a tolerence for everyone else’s bullshit, then damn it, you’d better have tolernce too.

beating people for the type of music they listen to?

mexicans should be ashamed of this example of social DE-EVOLUTION.

I found out about this through a friend and when I read this I was next to my boyfriend who is a proud mexican. It really made me mad that people are getting beat up cause they wanna be different. I may be classified as “scene kid” at my highschool but I will not simply turn the other cheek to this.

Diabolus | 4/6/2008, 10:21 pm EST

Someone said something about punk being fashion related and not accepting of listening to other genres…memories of high school maybe? Punk is only fashion with poseurs…like emo’s…who bastardize everything that punk was because of a trend. Someone else said that true punks wouldnt fight…what the hell are you babbling about, the genre of music that CREATED the mosh pit wont fight? are you serious…people watch too much tv. Like I said emo is the bastard offspring of a generation that has a grave mis-understanding of multiple huge sub-cultures, and ignorantly doesnt care about the truth in favor of dressing like tards, and so mutates it into a shitty high school trend that doesnt last past graduation, and if it does, then they deserve to be beat up. In short, Emo’s are being beat up because they are ridiculous, how they dress is ridiculous, and what they listen to is ridiculous. People are just tired of it, and i agree with them

Elena | 4/5/2008, 2:52 pm EST

Please remember that it is commonplace in a society of intolerance to have a government that conquers and divides the people. While all these young people are busy fighting over trivial and overexagerated differences, their government continues to conduct itself in ways that are corrupt and undetected by the masses because they are so distracted with fighting amongst eachother and being pawns in the game of internal division. Imagine the danger that would be posed to the government if all these young people stood up as a united front and contfronted the real corruption and oppressor, their government!! That would definately be a day where it would not be business as usual.

Lyle | 4/3/2008, 6:13 pm EST

But what is your definition of Emo? I like to wear black because I feel comfortable in it, like one of my friends feels comfortable in blue. Does that mean I’m Emo? Do I deserve to die in the streets just because some group of thugs doesn’t like the way I look? Did Sophie Lancaster? What’s the border between Emo and Goth?

Redeemer’s got a point. I can respect where he’s coming from. THere’s enough animosity in the world already. Why make music a problem? Good for you man. You’re well informed and able to state a point unlike the moronic post from issues who ignorantly chose to bash your insight rather than comment on the anti-emo article.

Issues, issues | 3/31/2008, 11:02 am EST

my my Redeemer, sounds like you have a sensetivity problem,,,,get some help.

Redeemer | 3/30/2008, 7:38 pm EST

Emo, punk, what difference does it make what style of music you like? For the record i can’t stand emo and only listen to punk occasionally. The problem on both sides is their narrow minded ideology. Punks are anti-conformity and deliberately set themselves apart with their mohawks and boots, etc. Punks are hypocrites because they are “anti-conformists yet have a code of dress and ethics that you must “conform” to in order to be considered a punk. And if you say you like other styles of music, then you’re not a true fan. WTF?I know what i like thank you very much. An the emo kids all they do is whine, wear black, sing like girls and emasculate themselves by wearing eyeliner because suddenly that’s the “cool” thing to do? That’s the problem with music today-most people segrate themselves into a specific music scene-punk,emo, metal, hip-hop, etc. Well guess what? I don’t fit any of your molds! Are you going to threaten to beat me up for being a fan of multiple genres?
Instead of ranting and raving about the new and s*****y emo bands (panic at the disco, fall out boy) and the punk bands of this day and age (pennywise, rancid, bad religion), why don’t you get off of your soapbox and listen to other genres of music? If you are so obsessed with how “good” and “superior” your band/style is that you physically attack a group of people whose only offense is that they listen to other forms of music, well my friends, that’s sad and unwarranted. You’re all just puppets if you allow others to tell you what’s good in music and what’s not. Check it out for yourself and if you really want to be “punk” then tell the die hards that you do like other styles of music and if they don’t like it they can f*** off. Now that would be punk! IF you want to hear good music, search for it. Dress how you want. Listen to music you want. Live how you want. But dOn’t beat up anyone else for their taste in music even if you think it sucks. Just do what you do and let everyone else do what they do.

I was emo before emo was emo | 3/30/2008, 2:22 pm EST

ha ha Anti-Emo rules!
sorry but these “Emos” lack of an ideology, and these people became emos cos a stupid channel named MTV started to sell the “EMO STYLE” cos they wanted something “alternative” “underground” for the kids, and as they keep brainwashing the people, our hatred started to grow more and more, cos what was “underground” now is fashion! cos they saw it sells! I AM SOOO PISSED OFF! I respect real Emos, the ones whom started the pathetic movement time ago, but how do you want me to respect brainwashed people?

Atittude in Mexico? | 3/30/2008, 1:00 am EST

Yesterday was the worse in Tijuana, more then 1000 emos and punks clash into each other in a popular plaza, this never happen before.

Young people in Mexico never stand up for anything, this is crazy, and is turning really ugly.

MIND | 3/29/2008, 11:07 pm EST

I’m not a fan of emo music..it’s a bit silly & posing. But to beat other kids up solely because of different tastes & attitudes only creates more unrest & violence. Music & art is about expression..Tolerance for different attitudes should always be the rule..You can disagree, but respect other people’s rights as well as long as they’re not interfering with your life.

Luis | 3/29/2008, 1:40 am EST

Belive it or not in Tijuana theres a anti-emo warning right now, i never seen this kind of behavior in Mexico, this is a country were young people never speak their minds against the system. To see young people united to beat other young people is really rare, is almost surreal and really, really sad.

Here in Tj emos are afraid claming for mercy.

Anonymous | 3/28/2008, 10:50 pm EST

Its not like Mods and rockers, the Emo’s are’nt willing participants in these fights. Mods and Rockers were both quite willing. I hate emo, but its stupid for them to be attacked like that. Can’t we all just talk smak about each other and call it good

Alan | 3/28/2008, 10:44 pm EST

I agree with the poster who noted the hypocrisy of punks attacking emos because of how they look. You’d think that they would sympathize with other members of an outcast subculture, even if they dislike the fashion or the music.

Punks, metal heads, skaters, hardcore kids, and yes, emos are all outsiders, and at the very least should be tolerant of one another. Those groups suffer enough prejudice from normal society, why should they fight amongst themselves?

Revo. | 3/28/2008, 9:29 pm EST

I’m not at all a fan of any Emo bands, aside from the original wave. But when punks are attacked by people because of the way they dress it’s considered by them to be oppression, or bigotry. But when supposed ‘punks’ do the exact same thing to Emo kids, they see absolutely no hypocrisy in this. Idiots, all of you Idiots.

Oh and “Tyler Durden” you’re either an internet tough guy or a muscle bound idiot jar-head type. If you want to be ignorant I suggest either coming up with better more intelligent things to say or just shutting up entirely, i recommend the latter.

Let’s ship all the emo’s down to Mexico and Chile. They can stay there. And while we’re at it, we should also ship over Panic At The Disco and My Chemical Romance and those over shit emo bands over to Mexico. It’s a good trade-off. We’re taking in their illegal immigrants and we’ll give them our emo’s and emo bands. Then we can close the border.

Yes, just like mods vs rockers, and just as stupid a reason to fight.

Oh god. Hopefully this doesn’t materialize into some “Emo and Scene Alliance” organization that sues us if we’re not politically correct.
