Does American Idol’s “sing a song from the year you were born” night do anything other than make a large portion of the show’s viewers feel old? Ramiele Malubay made the mistake of tackling Heart’s “Alone,” a song Carrie Underwood rocked to perfection in season four, and the judges weren’t wild for Carly Smithson’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (our theory: she must have pissed off the judges behind the scenes). The favorite was again, bafflingly, Syesha Mercado with her rendition of Stephanie Mills‘ “If I Were Your Woman,” even though she broke out that awful baby cry in her taped segment. For the night’s best moments, watch these quick clips:
5. Kristy Lee Cook throws herself on the American flag. A vote against KLC is a vote for terror, people.
4. Jason Castro: “Aloha, Mr. Hand!”
3. Simon saw star potential in Michael Johns. He didn’t necessarily hear it.
2. David Archuleta furthers his rep as the “Bindi Irwin of American Idol“ by covering a song by Aussie John Farnham.
1. Remember when the judges used to call Blake Lewis “brave” and “original”? No wonder he’s not a supporter of this year’s model: But David Cook’s version of Chris Cornell’s “Billie Jean” cover does actually rock.
