Smashing Pumpkins Sue Virgin Records Over Pepsi Promotion

3/25/08, 10:33 am EST

The Smashing Pumpkins filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against Virgin Records after the label used the band’s name in a “Pepsi Stuff” promotion without permission. Billy Corgan and crew are alleging Virgin had no right to involve the band in promotional deals and that the only deal in place with Virgin is the label’s right to sell digital downloads of the band’s songs. In the lawsuit, the Pumpkins say they would “never grant such authority to Virgin, or any other entity” and that the Pepsi deal threatens their “artistic integrity.” Virgin, who has counted Smashing Pumpkins on its roster for seventeen years, have yet to comment on the suit.

best concert i’ve ever seen: Pumpkins at the Orange Peel. Before you start talking about how bad that band sold out and crawling in a rat cage and all your other bitter “i work my ass off for my corporate bosses for 6.55/hr but i’m not a sell out” bullshit, why don’t you look up the orange peel, figure out how many people that club can hold, and remember that the tickets were $20 each, sold out in five minutes, featured a legendary band, and lasted for 6 hours. materialistic what?

zac | 3/30/2008, 12:31 pm EST

wouldn’t you be upset if somebody was stealing shit you made and using it for themselves?

Addison | 3/29/2008, 8:47 pm EST

Dear hello? this is 2008!,

Everyone in the Business is a whore. The 90’s just had better whores. I’m not gonna say everything about that time period is honest, because in many ways, the underground lost a lot of its integrity and innocence. I’m not going to stick up for Corgan’s “integrity” BUT COME ON. ITS ABOUT THE F***ING MUSIC!

-on the flipside of the Foo Fighters covering “Darling Nikki” by Prince, Prince did a very stripped cover of the Foo Fighter’s “Best of You.” And he did it at the damn superbowl, where people probably wanted to hear a studio-esque version of “1999.”

-I’ll give you that Chris Cornell has become lame, but not because he lost his sense of “style” or “doesnt make hip video’s” anymore. It’s because his music sucks nowadays.

-I’ll give you that Courtney love is creepier than Michael Jackson, but she was never accepted by a lot of the “grunge” community anyway…Not surprising nowadays

What I’m trying to get down to is that the music of the 90’s was incredible. The 80’s was about fashion and the spoonfed-video revolution. I’ll agree with the fact that it was honest in the 80’s, but it was pathetic.

anna | 3/27/2008, 2:53 pm EST

I totally agree, when the industry ignored underground artists (back on the 80’s) they acussed labels of been materialistic assholes.

During the 90’s the underground was the mainstream and they took advantage of it, signing to BIG labels and making the real $$$$$$, playing the comercial game. Suddenly they stop complaining!

Today the few 90’s artists that sell records are the ones who evolutionized, like Beck, NIN, Dave Ghroul, Radiohead etc. The rest is not relevant anymore, it happens in every decade, Remember how bad the 80’s look during the 90’s? now the 80’s looks better then the 90’s! so ironic, uh?

So get ready to see out of work ex-grungers talking about how bad is the music scene today and how good was back in the days.

What goes around comes around, these 90’s bands pointed the finger at the industry, now they are the industry and they sound so outdated.

IS NOT ABOUT BEEN IN THE TOP TEN BILLY!

Remember?

cate | 3/26/2008, 3:35 pm EST

the smashing pumpkins are great…yes, all their records sound pretty much the same, ha!

“artistic integrity” was lost looong ago…billy is just pissed bc he doesn’t want to seem mainstream or cooporate…he’s just the same. not off beat like he wishes…

hello? this is 2008! | 3/26/2008, 1:40 pm EST

Addison say this:

“Sorry guys but the 90’s are the most significant period of music in the last century next to the 60’s.” (then followed to trash the 80’s)

My Answer:
Are we living in the same planet? the 90’s were a complete farse, all the “been real” ideology that 90’s acts predicated were a lie, rock bands did wherever record executives told them to do and then die for it, worst, Billy Corgan, he was the first artist piss off at his record sales, saying that he was disapointed of his fans becouse his record din’t went to number one, materialistic asshole (somebody call the 80’s).

-Chris Cornell started doing music for James Bonds movies, you know, like Sheena Easton and Duran Duran (ouch!).

-Dave Grohl started doing Prince covers (good old 80’s).

-The weird and very bizarre Marlyn Manson is doing the same thing that very common (and boring) guys like Burt Reynolds or Trump did in the 80’s (abused wifes).

-Remember that live clip were Eddie Vedder screams at the camera “turn off those lights this is not a tv studio”. Guess who’s doing now multiple tv studios apareances and many music videos? Mr. Pearl Jam himself.

-Hole vocalist turn in to be a she freak crazier then Michael Jackson, (with lots of surgery too).

-Radiohead are turning in to a cartoon of themselves trashing the new music scene, you know like sir Elton John in the 80’s.

-Pantera had a small secret, they used to open for Poison with glitter and make up (pretty boys!).

And you call the 80’s music scene as dull times of uncreative corporate dumbasses ruling music?

Utleast the 80’s scene was honest and straight forward, embraicing music video and image with humor and class, much better then rock bands that possed as real integrity artists during the 90’s.

Dont get me wrong I love he 90’s music but come on man, face the facts, THE 90′S WERE A FARSE!

Rockstar70 | 3/26/2008, 9:49 am EST

Thanks WOW for taking the time to help correct my mistakes….WONK WONK WONK you sound like Charlie Brown’s teacher. According to my relevant world CORGAN SUCKS!! Even Motley Crue sell out 9000 plus seats…..Billy only manages what a HOUSE OF BLUES or so. You’re right this is all Propaganda

corgan is a greedy ass rat bastard.

I lost all respect after the multiple versions of the bullshit album…but this takes the cake.

Look billy, you had some great moments in the 90s and put out some good music, but its long over. go crawl back into your cage.

Addison | 3/25/2008, 9:35 pm EST

Sorry guys but the 90’s are the most significant period of music in the last century next to the 60’s. It was a time when the underground had become the mainstream. The underground of the 80’s contributed greatly to the 90’s, but whatever sort of “80’s comeback” some people are thinking of is bull. The 80’s mainstream and the current music scene will be remembered in 100 years as dull times of uncreative corporate dumbasses ruling music. If there were more bands like the Pumpkins today, I wouldn’t be complaining. Relevant to today…

wow | 3/25/2008, 9:26 pm EST

Intelligent comments all around. Not sure why i even checked the propaganda machine’s web site anyway. Oh, and Rockstar70; relevant is relative. (when you miss spell a word the comment box underlines it in red all you have to do is right click on it and select the correct spelling)

Billy’s right, Virgin can’t do that. The live shows still sound great.

brooke | 3/25/2008, 1:17 pm EST

i’m a die-hard pumpkins fan, but their “artistic integrity” was threatened a long time ago.

who puts out 4 or 5 versions of the same album? i mean, yeah, i bought all of them…

zwan was a viable band.

Eric | 3/25/2008, 12:26 pm EST

SP sucks.

Bad.

Like, I haven’t liked a song of theirs since Mellon Collie.

Rockstar70 | 3/25/2008, 11:47 am EST

PLEASE…..Like the Pumkins are relevent anymore!! They should be glad someone like Pepsi is interested in mentioning that crap band’s name. “Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage”. I guess some things never change BILLY!!

hubner73 | 3/25/2008, 11:29 am EST

he lost all artistic integrity after Zwan….get over yourself, Corgan.

readit | 3/25/2008, 11:20 am EST

merdle | 3/25/2008, 11:10 am EST
