Single Minded: The B-52’s, Counting Crows, The Raconteurs and More

3/25/08, 11:18 am EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

The B-52’s, “Funplex” [MySpace]
Any place called Funplex is not going to be fun. They’re going to have like three gray hot dogs going around on that metal wheel, one flavor of slushee and all the bumper cars will always be “temporarily out of service.” This song’s really good, though.

Counting Crows, “1492″ [MySpace]
The first Counting Crows record in six years is called Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings, a reference to its dual themes of staying out and staying in. Which trumps the original concept, Thursday Nights & Friday Mornings, where every song was either about watching Lost or not wanting to go to work.

Panic at the Disco, “She’s a Handsome Woman” [MTV]
Purists grouse, “They don’t make records like they used to,” so Panic at the Disco make a record exactly like they used to. As in, recorded at Abbey Road, loaded with acid-burn imagery and bursting with hooks and harmonies.

Plants & Animals, “Bye Bye Bye” [MySpace]
Canadian group picks up the pieces of the late-Sixties Panic at the Disco left over — specifically, Dylan and Young — and tricks post-collegiate webboes into thinking it’s indie rock. So, score one for Canada.

The Raconteurs, “Salute Your Solution” [MySpace]
In an effort to prevent leaks, the Raconteurs rushed their album to pressing three weeks after they finished recording it. It didn’t work. To prevent leaks of their next album, every song will be written by the drummer.

EMC, “Leak it Out” [MySpace]
A Tuesday bonus, because it’s so good: hip-hop lifers Masta Ace, Stricklin and Punchline & Wordsworth unite for an album of take-no-prisoners boom-bap. Press flaks are trying to bill this is a “supergroup,” but that’s kind of like saying Breckin Meyer, Amanda Peet and Kenan Thompson have “star power.”
