Beatles Manager and Mentor Neil Aspinall Passes Away

3/24/08, 12:26 pm EST

Neil Aspinall, the Beatles’ first road manager and head of the band’s Apple Corps for four decades, passed away in New York at age 66. Considered by many to be “the real fifth Beatle,” Aspinall was a childhood friend of George Harrison and Paul McCartney who left his job as an accountant to become the band’s first roadie, driver, spotlight operator and confidante. Later, after Brian Epstein’s passing in 1967, Aspinall became the head of Apple Corps, spearheading the marketing of the Beatles for forty years. Aspinall was most notably responsible for the wildly successful Anthology project and the recent Cirque du Soleil tribute show LOVE. In a statement today, McCartney, Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison said, “Neil’s trusting stewardship and guidance has left a far-reaching legacy for generations to come. All his friends and loved ones will greatly miss him but will always retain the fondest memories of a great man.”

There has to be special place in Heaven for a man who could put up with those four enormous egos for as long as he did. What’s even more special is that he did it without exploiting their dirty laundry. Neil, you’ll be missed. We can only hope that without you the Beatle legacy can still manage to stay in tact, and your work won’t be forgotten. I can’t wait to meet you, John and George in the next world. “And in the end, the love you make is equal to the love you make.”

R.I.P. Neil, we wouldn’t have half the things to watch and listen to if it weren’t for you. Thank You For everything you did for the Beatles legacy… You will be missed

There was a scene in the film: “A Hard Days Night” where the train was pulling in the station and the lads were getting ready to scamper off leaving Mal Evans and Neil with all of the instruments and stuff to take care of. One of them looks at John and says John Lennon “You are a swine!” John replies with that famous smile”Yes, I am”. It took a lot of effort to let the Beatles be themselves.

Aww, we will miss Neil. He was a beloved member of the Beatles family and a great person. Say hi to John and George, Neil.

“You know you are getting old when your idols start dying” someone said. Boy do I feel old today! One more “beatle” gone. So sad, so sad.

dennis | 3/28/2008, 3:58 pm EST

thanks for the well-wishers who remembered that norman smith and the maharishi have recently passed also.
as far as re-mixing,re-mastering the beatles…i would think that doing that would be like doing touch-ups on the mona lisa-if it is to be done-it would have to be done with the utmost care.part of the appeal of the beatles sound came from the crude equipment they used to record, mix and master their music.even ringo complained about how the transistorized 8-track used for “abbey road” made his drum sound “different” (and not necessarily better) than they did when recorded through the old 4-track tube equipment.
also, who would do it,giles martin? george martin is practically deaf.
i want the beatles records to sound the same as they did when they first came out. perhaps neil aspinall, god bless his soul,R.I.P.
felt the same way.
THANK YOU,Neil…you’re with your mates lennon and harrison in eternity…bless you.

So long Nell,

My deepest sympathies to your family. Your integrity and honor in a profession that knows little of these qualities will be your eternal legacy. Thank you so much.

looks pretty good for someone who’s dead.

Man oh man, a great guy. I only hope that The Beatles won’t end up on Lexus or Land Rover commercials like Zeppelin did.

I knew the man and he was one of my last heroes. The only force on earth that protected the Beatles’ legacy from large-scale gross commercializtion and subsequent trivialization was Neil Aspinall. He took every secret he could have profited from with him. His notion of mission, loyalty, and modesty and humility makes Sancho Panza appear self-serving in comparison.
Anyone who holds the artistry of the Beatles close to their heart owes Neil a debt of gratitude.
Oy!, Churchill, Shakespeare, Henry the VIII! move over and give a Scouser a seat at the table, e’s got a story to tell.

Thank you for keeping their secrets safe. We can learn so much from your example of what friendship should, and must, be. Goodbye from all the fans, for you too gave your up your nervous system.

While I agree with every sentiment posted for this special man, I also sort of hold Neil accountable for not getting the sound quality of the Beatles’ great catalog updated using current technology. All of their original CDs are 21 years old! “LOVE” showed us just how great it all can and should sound. While I too don’t want the market saturated with Beatles’ products, I do believe their music needs to be remixed/remastered. This would not be saturating the market. This is long overdue. And then there’s their promo films (song videos) that have collecting dust in the Apple vaults. They would have been a nice companion piece with “1.” But I have to agree, Neil did a great job protecting their legacy and ensuring they were not ripped off as they had been in their early, innocent days.

Neil’s Anthology interviews were very revealing to us “Beatle-Heads”. One could truly see that He loved his Beatle- “Brothers” very much indeed! May God bless you always Neil and my condolences to your family and friends. Cheers Mate!

All us Beatles fans consider Neil one of the most beloved members of the family and he will be missed.
We love you Neil, and despite our sadness that you’re gone, our comfort lies in George’s words: “Life flows on within you and without you”.

gabyb maccioco | 3/24/2008, 9:51 pm EST

What a great life the guy had and what a great role in history he played. He had over 40 years in a coveted position that most of us would love to have a for even one year. He is well remembered and well loved. Why be sad ? Kudos to Neil for leaving a legacy to be envied by all.

Joe Puma | 3/24/2008, 6:34 pm EST

Neil is beloved by we Beatles fans around the world and he will be sadly missed. His legacy should be that he was he not only successful in his stewardship of the Fab Four’s business in the economic sense, but that first and foremost his loyalty to all of the Beatles was exemplified repeatedly by his always putting their welfare first and dollars second. Many have ripped off the “lads” from Liverpool in a million different ways, but never the honorable Neil Aspinall. The planet lost a shining example today of what integrity and friendship should be all about, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Neil’s friends and family.Strawberry fields forever!

Rightinthenuts | 3/24/2008, 4:58 pm EST

Such a great friend and greater business man, who will be missed by anyone who came into contact with Neil

John & George are awaiting your arrival

God Bless to family and friends

Seth | 3/24/2008, 4:29 pm EST

Sad. Another piece of Beatles history is gone.

Stuporfly | 3/24/2008, 1:20 pm EST

One always got the impression during his interviews that the Beatles were lucky to happen upon a man of such integrity and honor. His contribution to keeping their legacy afloat without resorting to obnoxious oversaturation can not be understated.

Safe passage, Neil.

Sad news for the boys.

Rita | 3/24/2008, 12:42 pm EST

This is very sad.
My condolences to his family and friends.
