Weekend Rock List: Best Beatles Covers

3/21/08, 5:52 pm EST

This week, we learned a lot about good Beatles covers (Example: Sara Bareilles’ take on “Oh! Darling”) and bad Beatles covers (Example: Ninety percent of this week’s American Idol hopefuls). To honor those great Fab Four interpretations, this week’s Rock List is dedicated to the Best Beatles Covers. Let us know your picks, and on Monday we’ll reveal your list. Until then, here are our favorites:

Joe Cocker — “With a Little Help From My Friends”
Eddie Vedder — “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”
Jimi Hendrix Experience — “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”
Fiona Apple — “Across the Universe”
The Feelies — “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me and My Monkey”

Bukowski | 3/21/2008, 7:56 pm EST

As much as I hate this guy, and REALLY REALLY Loathe him and all his moronic braindead fans, Eddie Vedder did a good rendition of “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”!

Now I hope he fucking dies!

Dan | 3/21/2008, 7:56 pm EST

Jeff Healey’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, absolutely. Also, The Vines’ ‘I’m Only Sleeping’, Rhett Miller’s ‘Girl’, and to be honest, I thought The Fray did quite a good version of ‘Fixing A Hole’…

Bukowski | 3/21/2008, 7:58 pm EST

Dave Grohl did a beautiful cover of “Blackbird”! (very rare)

Fiona Apple’s “Across The Universe”

Motley Crue (who otherwise suck) did a bang up job with “Helter Skelter”!

Most of the Beatles covers on the I Am Soundtrack are all good, but the cover of Across the Universe is the best of the bunch, but I can’t remember who sings it.

Gaz | 3/21/2008, 10:09 pm EST

“Come and get it” wasn’t a Beatles cover.
It was a song written by McCartney for their Apple stablemates Badfinger.
Eleanor Rigby- The Zoot (prominent Aussie early 70’s band with Rick Springfield playing a pretty mean guitar in theis fine hard rock version).

Scott K | 3/22/2008, 2:29 am EST

Joe Cocker may be the king of Beatles covers – his awesome reworking of “With A Little…” of course, his cool version of “She Came In Thru the Bathrooom Window” is pretty great, and he even did a cool, unique version of “Come Together” in the “Across the Universe” soundtrack.

Also, Aerosmith’s “Come Together” and Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Got To Get You Into My Life” are also favorites. Some of the “I Am Sam” and “Across the Universe” covers are pretty cool too.

Ever the interpreter:

Harry Nilsson’s You Can’t Do That and She’s Leaving Home off of his debut are amongst the best I ever heard and even challenge the originals……I guess you could also throw his covers of Isolation (from the rereleasea of Aerial Ballet) and George’s “That is All” from the underrated “That’s the way it is”….

Siouxe Sioux (I know I spelled this wrong) did a very interesting cover of Helter Skelter that comes very recommended….

THe Breeder’s covered and did a fine job with Happiness is a Warm Gun.

Those are among the best I can think of off the top of my head…..

Nilsson’s one’s are easily the best, I’m less a fan of Nilsson’s version of Mother Nature’s son though.

Really, what does Eddey Vedder add to “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”? Joe cocker, on the other hand completely transforms “With a little help from my freinds”, finding a grace and pathos to the to the song that even the Fab Four missed.

The Beatles were incredible early in their career, then they turned into psychodelic fluff mock rock. They are way too revered. Fuck ‘em.
They wrote a lot of p*ssified songs amongst the thousands.

Who cares about all these mild artists who cover their music while they mindlessly bow at the thrown of The Flab Four.

NILSSON’s “You Can’t Do That” is obviously the best Beatles cover ever, even the Beatles agreed.

R.Tickle | 3/24/2008, 10:42 am EST

Sherry, it’s always good to know what it is you hate this week.
LAIBACH covered all of “Let it Be” and if you like that, you’ve got to stay away from drugs.
Michael Stanley did a spacey-slow version of “HELP” on his Friends & Legends album that is mystifyingly satisfying.
Sean Lennon covered “Dear Prudence” when he was about 12 and did a decent job…
but I think the best has to be “LIES” by the Knickerbockers.
(oh right, that’s not a cover. oops)

As much as I don’t like the band, the Vines did an amazing “I’m Only Sleeping” for the I AM SAM soundtrack.

Also agree on:
Oasis — “Walrus”
Crue — “Helter…” (can’t believe I’m staying that).
Ben Harper — “Strawberry…”

And gotta love the kiddies with no knowledge of rock history…”Live and Let Die” = NOT a Beatles song. Ugh.

Even Pat Benatar’s version of that song had more balls.

Jared B | 3/24/2008, 3:55 pm EST

Ben Harper’s cover of Strawberry Fields is right up there with the Beatles original IMO. Also, the Black Keys do a great cover of She Said, She Said

“Something”- Frank Sinatra (incredible…which proves it’s the singer AND the song)
“Hey Jude” by Elvis Presley which is sooo bad… I don’t think EP has a clue what he is singing about…it might be the first time he has ever seen the lyrics and if you actually hear it, you will be stupified. (if you aren’t already, that is)

Wow…did no one mention Phil Collins version of “Tomorrow Never Knows” from Face Value??? I’ve liked The Beatles I was 4 years-old in 1964 (my sister was 13) and a varitable Beatle FREAK since I was 15, and that is THE BEST Beatles cover of which I am aware.
