Yes Hit The Road For 40th Anniversary, Rick Wakeman Quits For The Fifth Time

3/20/08, 12:25 pm EST

A mere four years after their 35th anniversary tour, prog rock giants Yes are hitting the road for their 40th anniversary tour. Billed as “Close to the Edge and Back,” the twenty-six date American tour launches July 12 in Quebec and wraps up August 22nd in Los Angeles. The band’s constantly shifting lineup now features vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, guitarist Steve Howe and — in a bizarre twist even by Yes standards — Rick Wakeman’s son Oliver Wakeman on the keyboards. Rick explained his absence in a lengthy post on his website. “My major concern was that of over-touring,” he writes. “Which I felt YES had done since 2002 with far too many shows, especially in America which for me diminished the ’specialness’ of the band.” He doesn’t rule returning to the fold at a future point for something “very special in the not too distant future.” For those keeping track, this marks the fifth time Wakeman has quit the band, which has to be some sort of record. There are plenty of examples of sons filling in for their dead fathers in bands (most famously Jason Bonham in Led Zeppelin), but this has to be the first time a son will fill in for his alive (and perfectly healthy) father in a band.

C’mon Rick, it ain’t the same without you!

Johnny Lightningbug | 3/20/2008, 2:38 pm EST

Hey whatevah.Personally I don’t give a crap whether its Oliver or Rick and I really don’t care about the tour.150.00 bucks a ticket is a joke I’ve been going to the shows since ‘71′.

Matt Wardlaw | 3/20/2008, 2:58 pm EST

actually, it’s well known that Rick is not doing this tour, because he has been urged in recent years to limit his touring, due to health issues (allegedly heart related.)

I heard that he is limited to 25 shows per year.

Let the Dog Bone Rot... | 3/20/2008, 10:14 pm EST

to each his own…I’ve seen all good people turn their heads each day, I’m satisfied I’m on my way…
thanks for the memories YES.
Good Luck.

re: Johnny Lightningbug | 3/20/2008, 2:38 pm EST

I don’t think someone who’s been going to shows since 1971 would say he “(doesn’t) give a crap” about this tour, bitch about ticket prices-which have been in this price range for quite some time now-or use the MOTHERFUCKING WORD “WHATEVAH”!!!

I think, you sir, are full of shit!

mr roboto | 3/21/2008, 2:03 am EST

Sounds like a publicity stunt, to me. You know how these Yes nerds like to be completists.

Five bucks says he’ll be playing on the next tour which will cost twice as much!

The Intl | 3/21/2008, 3:50 am EST

So, as soon as the kid is done touring with Van Halen he starts the Yes tour. Lotsa money for college!

“Sounds like a publicity stunt, to me. You know how these Yes nerds like to be completists.”

“Five bucks says he’ll be playing on the next tour which will cost twice as much!”

On behalf of us Yes nerds, why would you care about the price of tickets for a band that you don’t like?

You obviously are inCOMPLETE!

theoutsideworld | 3/21/2008, 9:13 am EST

man, i’ve quit my band WAY more times than 5. give ME the friggin’ record!

Long Distance Runaround | 3/21/2008, 1:21 pm EST

BK | 3/21/2008, 3:02 pm EST

Just say NO to YES.

Bukowski | 3/21/2008, 5:55 pm EST

huh huh huh, that’s a knee slapper.

Jimmy The K | 3/21/2008, 10:45 pm EST

The only Yes lineup I want to see: Anderson,Bruford,Wakeman,Howe and Squire. But alas their lineup is the definition of Perpetual Change.

Jake Burns | 3/21/2008, 11:41 pm EST

Pompous morons, these guys.

Dan | 3/22/2008, 5:15 pm EST

Yes has been around 40 years, and STILL have not been inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. I`ve heard all prog rock bands are automatically excluded from it.

Bukowski | 3/23/2008, 4:33 am EST

. . . which is bullshit because they’ve made some of the best music. it’s probably because the electorate morons can’t comprehend anything longer than 5 minutes.

The only snub that REALLY PISSES
ME OFF is PG Genesis, because they were ions ahead of the rest of them. They weren’t making ear candy by showing off how good they could play; they were composers of some of the most beautiful rock music ever made!

I can take or leave a lot of stuff that ELP or Yes did. But they were brilliant as well and it shouldn’t even be an issue whether or not any of them should be inducted!

Marc | 3/23/2008, 2:06 pm EST

I’m sure Oliver has learned all of Rick’s parts and this will be a great tour with plenty of Squire and Howe solos to enjoy. Where is Trevor Rabin, so we can hear “Walls”, “Changes” and “Shoot High Aim Low”?

Fingers | 3/26/2008, 4:05 pm EST

Who cares where Trevor Rabin is? He’s responsible for the worst era musically in the band’s history.

exToby Farmer | 3/28/2008, 10:44 pm EST

33 years, 80 CD’s of yes and solo members after owning the LP, cassette copies of most or all releases…18 copies of roundabout and all good people, just get the rare tracks, dvd’s and concert versions of other songs… and now $400 for decent seats?
I’m done…

Oh1MoreThing | 4/3/2008, 7:13 pm EST

Why do they refer to Yes bandmembers who are not in the current line-up as ‘Ex-members’? Once in/from Yes, always from Yes. Rick himself says “You Never Leave It, you are always a part of it…”

They all simply contribute and produce “Yes Music”. You could spend a lifetime just collecting solo work from Yes members and there eventual contributions to all eventual Yes-like prog bands that followed (Having at least one or 2 members from the core band)… Badger, Cinema, Circa, White, Wakeman and Wakemen, Jon and Vangelis, Asia, GTR, Conspiracy, eSquire, Earthworks, The Steve Howe Trio, even the Buggles, hell even XYZ songs showed up on Yes Albums….. These guys launched their own Genre of Prog! Yes! ….Should be in the Hall of Fame- or will it end up being posthumous 1 day? Is that what we are waiting for….? Rolling Stone get over yourself and the right thing!

From Italy | 4/4/2008, 7:18 am EST

I’d like to see YES with Trevor Rabin: for me, the best member. If Yes are here now, in a way so popular, is for Trevor!

Fingers: You don’t understand….NOTHING!

OverTheEdge | 4/6/2008, 10:18 am EST

I’m just so glad to get another opportunity to see them again. I’ll gladly pay the ticket price and more.

If you want to see real musicians… I mean musician’s musicians, you must see YES. They actually understand the theory, principles of composition and counterpoint that truly great music is built upon. And they use it to great advantage. The only problem is, there is more to hear in the music than what most people will catch in a single listening. If you want to understand what they are about, listen to the Close To The Edge album, preferably with headphones, uninterrupted 3 times. I did in 1973 and I must have listened to it hundreds of times since and still gain new perspectives on the music and composition.

It’s easy to mock what you don’t understand.

rushrules | 4/15/2008, 1:42 pm EST

Genesis is the best prog rock band ever…hands down.
Yes and Genesis both should be in the R&R hall of fame no question. Just on record sales totals alone…

trooper | 6/2/2008, 12:35 pm EST

any word on show content? another retro-tour (hopefully) or is there anything new in the mix? very excited to be able to see/hear progressive’s favorite sons, yet again.

Billy C. | 6/23/2008, 2:43 pm EST

I’m just happy that these guys are still around and can play their music themselves. And sing their music themselves. They’re a treasure. …Genesis too. I’d pay $150 a couple times a year for each of them. I wish Rick would realize that time and lifespans are finite. Respectfully. Billy C.

redhipporaider | 7/9/2008, 12:45 am EST

What is really a shame for Fan’s of YES, is the lack of new material! Time seems to go a lot faster now that these guys are getting older & time’s a waisting. I suppose all we can do now is “Look Back” and marvel at the Bands past works & wonder how so much good music came from these select group of musicians.

Dave9640 | 9/21/2008, 1:06 am EST

Hey, my first concert was in 75 and saw Rick do journey to the center of the earth. Wow, what a show. I’ve seen yes over the years the best I thought was at JFK stadium. Oh yeah Peter Frampton was there also.I thought it was great but when you paid 5-7 dollars a ticket back then, paying 150 is a bit much. Dave

Starship Trooper | 9/25/2008, 9:22 pm EST

these dudes are just in it for the money, They dissed Johnny Boy big time on this upcoming Nov.2008 Tour

Ana Carolina | 9/28/2008, 7:01 pm EST

They should come to Brazil! We miss them! Yes only tours in North Amarica. Unfair.

Peace Brother Jerome | 10/21/2008, 8:33 pm EST

Hey Ana Carolina, -you say you want YES to come to Brazil???.. well I got a news flash for you sister, next stop on this “YES IMPOSTORS TOUR”, will be Fiday Nite at the local Holiday Inn Lounge- no cover charge! Squire, Howe, Ollie, & White, are desperadoes, who need these gigs to make a few extra bucks -PATHETIC EVERYONE, they are done, I wouldn’t pay one cents to hear “Roundabout” and all the other tired, beat up stuff, ever again, -anyone got a problem with that???

Martha Abbolafia, Trenton,NJ | 10/26/2008, 9:01 am EST

Hi! -I read all the comments below, and would NEVER induct YES into the Hall of Fame. YES is a very old band, playing old music, that is no longer relevant, except for you guys living in a time warp!
You all need to get with the times, a little nostalgia is fine, but that’s about all this band called YES can offer!

rough bunch | 10/29/2008, 9:24 pm EST

i would like to know what band isn’t touring for any reason other than touring?Yes followers will always be Yes followers and go to see them it doesn’t matter if the music is now or then

Carlo | 10/30/2008, 9:17 pm EST

Oliver is a chip off the old ‘bloke’, if you will. Like the people say, it’s more about the music itself, than those who create it. Close your eyes and enjoy the music. That is really why you’re there in the first place…

Leroy "A Train" Atkinson, | 10/31/2008, 2:41 pm EST

Get wise son, as Jon Anderson says . . .”This IS NOT YES on Tour”, so all you moron believers, willing to throw away your money, in this depressing economy, go to the show, and you will see for yourself. I’m not putting up with this crap!

coach | 11/8/2008, 6:49 pm EST

Went last night in NH. Awesome. Close your eyes and listen.

New front man is Anderson sound alike. But, his stage act is sorta lounge lizard. Oliver struggles.

All other still have their “fastball”.

Peace brother Jerome Watkins 2 | 11/9/2008, 10:53 pm EST

I’m getting bad reviews about Ollie Wakeman -this novice needs to get some major training- we will have our 1st “YES PROTEST”, this week at the NYC Concerts! =look for us in the Parking Lot, with the “Just say NO to YES” signs, we will be boycotting the concerts, it will be a peaceful demonstation, we are aginst these concerts on many levels, mainly due to the “Disrespect” shown to JON,by the other worn out band members, with no regards to the man’s health issues. See you there, we will be also plaing our YES CD’s, so just listen out for the music, and follow the sounds to our Van & set up, free coffee & Crispy Creme Donuts, & possibly some great bootleg tapes & T-Shirts!!!!

Tempus Fugit | 11/21/2008, 11:57 pm EST

Yes remains one of the great bands to emerge from the 1960’s and survive to the present day. I am so glad they are out and playing around again, even if Jon and Rick are not with them. They have been waiting too long to get out on the road.

I have seen two shows on this tour, and I think that the band sounds great! Their playing is sharp, spirited, and they are having fun playing together. New singer Benoit David does an excellent job filling in for Jon Anderson. Oliver Wakeman sounds fabulous and is growing more confident and more comfortable with the music with each show.

Yes – its a nostalgia trip, just what I would hope for from Yes. I love their music and would expect them to play all their great songs like Starship Trooper, Close to the Edge, Siberian Khatru, And You and I, and a lot of songs they do not play often like Astral Traveller, Paralells, Onward, Machine Messiah and Tempus Fugit. The new Chris Squire song sounds pretty good too.

Yes, without a doubt, belongs in the rock and roll hall of fame. not that it would be important to me or any of their fans that they were or were not in the RRHoF, but their importance and influence in music is undeniable.

mr who cares | 11/22/2008, 10:14 pm EST

Peace brother Jerome Watkins 2

I hope your joking mate. If not you have too much bloody time on your hands mate!

Peace Brother Jerome | 11/23/2008, 9:46 am EST

To Mr “Who Cares”, -guess what, we WERE out htere in the cold, as planned. At least 30 fans stopped by to talk about the “YES MESS”, so it was a success, and then we were in NJ and did the same, and we got our message out loud & clear, so go put that in your pipe & smoke it jack!

Light a Candle | 11/23/2008, 8:45 pm EST

Jon, I am So sorry for what has happened to you, and the way that you have been treated. I know that you will do the right yhing;solo or with YES. God’s speed in your recovery! WE LOVE YOU JON! And everything you stand for. As you said on the Horizons album with Vangelis: “No agression, that we leave behind us….” I know you’ll make the right decision when you are well again; solo, or with Yes. Gods’ speed!

PEACE BROTHER JEROME WATKINS 4 | 12/10/2008, 8:56 pm EST

Hey y’all -one more time for you MORONS on this Blog . . this AINT YES, get it through your thick heads! How desperate are you to see this impostor sing “Roundabout”, stop wastin your money. I AM The Music Authority, so the buck stops here -Peace brother Jerome watkins, that’s who Dude

Yesiammark | 12/31/2008, 10:54 pm EST

All these comments about paying such a high price to see what amounts to a YES cover band. Not for me…I will wait for Jon Anderson to be back in the fold. I DONT WANT to have to close my eyes at a Yes concert…I want to enjoy the show, and Jon is a huge part of the show…visually and vocally.

Paul | 1/8/2009, 1:15 am EST

I saw Yes for the In The Present Tour and loved it. The band looked like they were having fun and Benoit did a great job. I know Jon is the “voice” of Yes but its the musicianship of the band thats impressed me so much over the years.

william harris | 3/10/2009, 1:55 am EST

i’m happy to see this band is still plugging along. i’m sad to see that jon isn’t with them. but as for rick, how could anyone not see that coming?? :D ..get well JON.. there is work to do. (and screw the rock hall of fame; they are completely bogus, like the grammys)

Yessongs4ever | 3/21/2009, 12:09 am EST

Hey “Jake Burns”-you are obviously an ignorant fool. Whether you enjoy Yes music or not, they are some of the best rock musicians to ever grace a stage. That being said, the band is not COMPLETE without Jon Anderson. Others have come and gone, but Jon is the spirit of Yes, every other version of the band is just “a copy”.

John Worthmire | 3/24/2009, 9:32 pm EST

to all you Old Hippies, get with the program, this is 2009, who the hell cares what the YES lineup is, this music is ANCIENT. The Summer of Love was over 40 years ago, stop tokin on the reefer, and face REALITY you stupid Bastards!
The only people on this Blog is Brother Jerome (below) I read some of his stuff, and he seems to “get it”, so how about you? I aint payin Jack Sqwat for anything YES related, these Dinosaurs, is that all that they can do???
Get off of my Cloud you old Geysers, enough is enough, go to the Retirement Home of Old Farts, where you all belong.
I’ll spend my hard earned dough, at the AC/DC Conert & get my moneys worth, you freakin Morons!!!!

Brian "Li'l Seagull" Long | 3/31/2009, 2:38 am EST

I beleive YES have a path with a heart (Gates Of Delirium Pt. 3)
I ask the Source The White Light for healing and answers in troubled times… Seasons will pass you by I get up, get down – Thanks Jon – peace…

k felts | 5/16/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Easy… you all are going in the wrong direction. This band is important to all of those ‘living in the past’. But, hey get over it! If you think they are not commited to the legacy of YES, then skip the show. I’m pretty sure the concerts will be top shelf. For the fact that Steve,Chris, and Alan will be there. Too bad Jon has been ill, but, let us not forget the changes that this band has gone through over the years. RELAX….. YOURS IS NO DISCRACE..

paolo | 6/20/2009, 8:00 pm EST

John Worthmire, c’mon john old buddy, it’s not good to hold it in say what you really feel !!

Kelli Jones | 7/9/2009, 1:52 am EST

Okay, I went to the concert last night in L.A. I was a huge fan of Yes from about 76-86, probably, have seen them 5 or so times back then. LAst night…well, the crowd is what bummed me out. Talk about an ugly, old, mid-lifing dirt fest. Argh. Were all the nerds the fans back when? It was probably a 3:1 male: female ratio, and really, it could have been mistaken for the computer fest for old geezers. Old, stinky, 45-60 year old nerds. The music was so good, reminiscent, for sure. NIce to hear, since no friggin’ radio ever plays YES, but the crowd….after last night, we decided to stick with contemporary artists and skip the vintage bands. Made us feel gross to see who our population is. Steve howe? awesome, Chris Squire and Alan? Great. I missed Jon, and kind of felt ripped-off to see Rick Wakeman didn’t make it. Cool to know he has a son, but would have preferred to have Rick.
ciao!

Hurricane | 7/16/2009, 12:15 am EST

I’ve been seeing Yes tours since the 1971 Fragile tour. Back when Chris was skinny and Steve had a bit more muscle! Bill Bruford was a monster. Rick put on quite a show with the sequins cape. I saw teh Relayer tour with Patrick Moraz. Great shoe! I’ve seen them with the Tony Kaye and Trevor Rabin lineup. I even saw them last Novemeber with Jon’s replacement singer. At least they were able to cover the songs from Drama!
I was a little disappointed with Oliver. I’m sure he’s a fine musician, but he’s not to Dad’s caliber, yet. He played a lot one-handed. They had taped a lot of the Close to the Edge keyboard material that Rick actually plays.
So….stop the hatin’. There’s always something good at a Yes show. In fact this time, I think I saw Chris drink about 20 beers on stage.

talestopocean | 7/25/2009, 8:38 pm EST

I’ve loved Yes and Jon Anderson sice I became prog-aware and quit top 40. Jimmy the K is right. Even Jon Anderson has left Yes, and the band produced Drama! Many thought Yes was over when he quit. Trevor Rabin’s cool, but he almost brought them down! Here’s to all the “regulars” being back together in 2010.

alan hughes | 8/13/2009, 9:08 am EST

i would ike to see yes in australia in melbourne come guys get there please

King Crimson | 9/28/2009, 12:16 pm EST

Buzzy | 10/25/2009, 11:36 am EST

Yes Fragile was ok until you were tripping, then it hurt your ears.

Long Distance Run Around | 11/20/2009, 2:18 pm EST

Saw YES this week in Hammersmith Apollo (It used to be called the Odeon) Not only did they rock but for only $70 to boot! London Rocks!
