Queen Plot New Album, Tour

3/20/08, 10:40 am EST

Queen announced they will release their first album of new material since the Freddie Mercury era. This will be the first Queen studio album to feature new vocalist Paul Rodgers and their first studio album of any kind since 1995’s Made in Heaven, which featured the band using Mercury’s last vocal recording session before his death in 1991. One of the new songs, “Say It’s Not True,” was previously released as a free download on World Aids Day. The rest of the songs were recorded in late 2007/early 2008, with one song dubbed “C-lebrity.” The album is expected to be ready for release on September 1st, with the tour starting two weeks later.

Queens entire studio record output, revolves round Freddie as frontman and singer, and you dont need to be a fan of Queen to know that.Paul Rogers is so overrated as a vocalist,he’s been voted best rock singer of the 70’s, believe that and you would believe anything.
Bad Company will never be in the same class as rock bands of the 70′S like Queen,Deep purple and Led Zeppelin.”Freddie Mercury was awesome”

Danielle | 12/17/2008, 2:22 pm EST

It is NOT Queen with out Freddy Mercury. It will never be Queen again… NEVER EVER!!! R.I.P Freedy Mercury. We all miss and love you!! Brian May is awesome to.
Their will never be a singer, as good, or as talented as Freddy Mercury. NEVER!!!!! I dont think he would ever approve of this guy being the new singer. He dosent even SOUND like Freddy Mercury… Wtf… Stupid whats his name… Paul Rodgers. Im 15, and i never went to a Queen concert, nor will i ever because hes not alive. I wish he was still alive. LONG LIVE FREDDY MERCURY!!!!!!!!!!!

no it’s not Queen without Freddie but it’s now two members of Queen using the name singing with Paul Rodgers(DOES WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN!)going to see them tonight in Glasgow - will be wierd bu hopefully relive some memories and make some new ones

Sonny | 9/1/2008, 11:49 pm EST

I would think Freddie would approve. The reason why is because Brian May and Roger Taylor have music left to play and this is a way to bring it to the world. It’s not the same, it’s never going to be the same. I will hope that people will put aside their complaints and fears and let Queen reign again…even with a new lead singer.

John Deacon should rejoin. I mean, wtf? This is their chance, and he has to say no. WTF?!

“Each band has a dead guy now..:(”

NOW?
Kossoff died 32 years ago.
Freddie died 17 years ago.

woah | 4/21/2008, 11:23 am EST

No one can or will replace Freddie Mercury; it’s impossible. And honestly, I’m not exactly jumping out of my seat in excitement that someone is taking his place (notice, i’m saying taking his place, not replacing him… there IS a difference), but i think i might have to at least give the new band a chance before writing it off…

trampled | 3/24/2008, 3:33 pm EST

The Paul Rodgers haters should take a pill. He’s an accomplished bluesy singer that can deliver live. What else do they need. They’ve never made any bones about Rodgers being like Mercury. It’s just that they like his singing, so let them get on with it. The band was not named “Freddie Mercury”, so I’m sure he would have wanteed them to continue on.

Jack Of All Tirades | 3/23/2008, 12:30 pm EST

A Free or Bad Company reunion would have to include the same thing a real next Queen album would: a resurrection. Each band has a dead guy now..:(

Frank T. | 3/22/2008, 8:48 pm EST

Why are some people obsessed with the idea that Freddie Mercury was being replaced with Paul Rogers? That is certainly not the case…the band is just trying to carry on as best they can. As some other readers have pointed out, the band’s name now is Queen + Paul Rogers, not just Queen.

Re-name the crew | 3/22/2008, 2:53 pm EST

Queen was, is and always will be Freddie, Brian, Roger and John. I have been a fan since 1973. I do like the idea of seeing them again, but it’s missing the main elements. It would be like Paul and Ringo having a Beatles tour.
Call the new group Smile and bring back John Deacon and Tim Staffells.

Marc | 3/22/2008, 10:08 am EST

First of all, they are called “Queen + Paul Rodgers”, not just Queen (as this article states). Queen was Brian May, Freddie Mercury, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. This is a bit different. And who is anyone to tell them they can’t carry on with a different singer?? It’s not like Freddie Mercury was fired from the band and they got someone to replace him. He unfortunately died. I saw Queen + Paul Rodgers live a couple of years ago, and they blew me away! Paul Rodgers voice is unbelievable! He sounds NOTHING like Freddie Mercury, which is why I liked him so much. He has a much bluesier voice, and made those tunes his own. This album is gonna be phenomenal - mark my words. I can’t believe how many people live off of putting other things down. Unreal. Hear it first before you rush to judgement.

Legacy The Loser | 3/22/2008, 5:43 am EST

re:Rock and roll | 3/21/2008, 11:42 pm EST

“LEave legacy alone.”

Leave Legacy alone, nah, nah, nah.
Why don’t you home now, blowjob queen?

(whispering) When Legacy comes out of school, Jeff, get him in a headlock. I’ll start whaling on him. Then Chris you give him the Wedgie Supremo and then we grab his bookbag, you hit it with Ronsonol and set it on fucking fire!

Here he comes . . .

Rock and roll | 3/21/2008, 11:42 pm EST

LEave the legacy alone. Freddie mercury IS QUEEN!!!

Rock and roll | 3/21/2008, 11:40 pm EST

Freddy mercury is irreplaceable. LEave the legacy alone.

Frederic Ball-Sorry | 3/21/2008, 10:27 pm EST

How about releasing it straight to the reduced bin? Why sully the name of one of rocks great bands by releasing this? Queen was and is Freddy Mercury!

Hank Chinaski | 3/21/2008, 8:04 pm EST

“Queen will Paul Rodgers rocks”

Do they now?

“I’ll be first in line to buy a new disc.”

Yeah. Why don’t you pick up the new Dave Matthews disk while you’re at it?

And don’t forget the Pan Flute and Windchimes Relaxation CD as well!

Red Haired Goddess | 3/21/2008, 3:36 am EST

. . . I think the George Michael vocal idea would make them sound great, though.

I think Paul Rodgers should take his very modest vocal ability and do a Free or Bad Company reunion.

That I’d like to see ’cause it would fit together musically. And he sounded good with BC, but this Queen “reunion” is a joke.

Jon | 3/21/2008, 12:31 am EST

Freddie was a distinct talent with a one-of-a-kind voice. That being said, Paul Rodgers sang his ASS off on their Queen tour/DVD & CD. I’ll be first in line to buy a new disc.

CDN | 3/21/2008, 12:19 am EST

Queen will Paul Rodgers rocks! I’m confident the new album will be great after such a great tour…The name is fine as Queen + Paul Rodgers….after all Brian May and Roger Taylor were always huge contributors to the Queen sound…can’t wait to hear it!

Henry Chinaski | 3/20/2008, 11:15 pm EST

Do me a favor, don’t compare Nirvana to Queen! That’s ridiculous to compare a great progressive rock icon band to a bunch of guys who could barely play and made only one half-way decent album.

And if Kurt Cobain were alive this band would be completely forgotten. Some people are still under the delusion that Nirvana were great. They weren’t. They were barely even good.

But I agree that Queen’s not Queen without Freddie Mercury. And Paul Rodgers is a horrible choice. He can’t hit half the notes that Freddie could.

However, I remember during the Freddie tribute concert of ‘91 (or ‘92) Brian May commented how much George Michael sounded like Freddie. Once I heard him say that, I noticed how much he did sound like him. He performed a perfect rendition of “Somebody To Love”!!! At least then Queen would sound like Queen.

I think the addition of Michael would make them sound right and Michael certainly would fit the bill as far as sexual flamboyance is concerned, he’d be a much better fit (pun intended)!

But even in that superior scenario they still shouldn’t use the name Queen. There cannot be a Queen without Freddie Mercury.

Nathan | 3/20/2008, 6:31 pm EST

Some bands should just call it quits when the singer dies, Queen is certainly one of those. Imagine going to see Nirvana with Chris Daughtry on vocals.

Spook78 | 3/20/2008, 5:11 pm EST

Using the name Queen is just a way to get more exposure for this “new” band’s music (and possibly, dare I say,) to make more money. They’re riding on Mercury’s buried coattails. He was the personification of the band. You can’t change the personification and use the same name. Whether it sells or not, it just ain’t right.

I've Heard This Before | 3/20/2008, 3:30 pm EST

You know I think that these same comments were made when AC/DC was trying to replace Bon Scott, granted Freddie was a lot different and better than Bon. Then they went out and made an album that has been certified 22 times platinum. If Axl can still get away with calling his band Guns N’ Roses despite himself being the only member from the Appetite For Destruction days, then I think we can let this band be called Queen.

basser | 3/20/2008, 3:29 pm EST

If bassist John Deacon came back into the fold, I could maybe buy the name, but since Deacon is out (?) and Mercury (RIP) is gone, maybe they should call it something else. (And I am the biggest Queen, Free, early-Bad Company fan. I liked the DVD they did with Paul Rodgers).

b. breeg | 3/20/2008, 2:24 pm EST

Freddie Mercury is too legendary to be replaced. I understand Queen’s desire to make new music, but replacing Freddie would be like the old guns n’ roses crew(Velvet Revolver) replacing Axl and calling it guns n roses.

What's in a Name? | 3/20/2008, 2:03 pm EST

It’ll be exciting to hear; they’re a great group of musicians and interesting to see what they produce…
As for the name, that’s the way they want to do it, so whatever.
It’s no Muppet News Flash that it’s not the original band, and this isn’t the first or last time this “name” thing will happen because one member of a group is gone and/or deceased.

I wish they would call this something else. The tour was great (Paul was amazing) and it was a fantastic way to celebrate Freddie. This is a supergroup, but not Queen though. The album should not be considered a Queen record IMO

The last tour album with Paul Rogers was enough.

Freddie was the Heart of Queen and will NEVER be replaced.
