iPods With Unlimited Music: Is Steve Jobs Coming Around to Subscriptions?

3/19/08, 12:52 pm EST

The Financial Times reported today that Apple is in discussions with the major labels to sell iPods and iPhones that come with unlimited access to iTunes music. Consumers would pay a one-time surcharge when they buy the device, and would be able to download as music as they want for the life of the iPod or iPhone. It’s similar to a deal that Nokia worked out with Universal Music Group last year, to sell its phones with unlimited access to Universal tunes for an $80 premium. According to FT’s sources, the Apple deal is being held up by negotiations over how much to charge for the access: Apple wants to keep the charge as low as $20, while the labels presumably want something closer to the Nokia deal.

The deal sounds a lot like the subscription model already available from Rhapsody, Napster and others, which Apple CEO Steve Jobs has long said does not work: “The subscription model has failed so far,” he was quoted as saying last May. “Never say never, but customers don’t seem to be interested in it.” If Apple was able to offer unlimited access to iTunes music for a $20 extra charge, it’s hard to imagine many consumers not being interested in it.

I would pay $20 a month for a subscription service for iPod.As long as it offers all the artists and works for all iPods.

Subscription models are the future of music business. For you guys saying that the labels and artist will get screwed, you’re wrong. The labels are going under anyways, and most artists make the majority of their money from live performances rather than album sales. Research it, and you will find many prospective models that people are proposing to make this work in favor of both the consumer and the industry. Eventually, there will be an additional $10-$20 per month added to the cost of your ISP, which will be to pay for this subscription service. I love everything Apple puts out, but iTunes is behind on the game of subscription services.

that would be what I want but it still would require us to buy whole new ipods and I just upgraded 8 months ago. Why can’t itunes just make a subscription service that is the same as all the other ones. I mean, if they did this it would suck for the artists and then they couldn’t make music anymore. I’d be more than happy to pay 10-15$ a month so that I could have unlimited access to the store. How else would I fill up my 80GB ipod (that’s like 25,000 songs which means $25,000 in music)?

you guys are so negative. i would love for itunes to make all their music free for $20. i would love it if i could download itunes quality music for free and i bet that the artist would get a chunk of money. DO IT ITUNES!!!!!!

and who gets screwed when this goes down? the artist. or at least the artist who hasnt sold millions and millions of albums and can’t make their own special side deal.

no way

This is really stupid, and the labels will never agree to it. Really, for $20 you could have every song ever made ever? Fat chance. This is why I hate iTunes, they always find another way to fuck up the music business.

As long it is not rented music and music that when I buy it is totally mine it will be just fine!!

Jakobi | 3/20/2008, 9:24 am EST

So what’s to stop me from paying $20 and buying every album ever?

TheTunefreak | 3/19/2008, 10:46 pm EST

Oh Yeah would I be down with this plan!

ROCKNROLLPIMP | 3/19/2008, 8:20 pm EST
