Velvet Revolver’s Duff McKagan Claims Potential Led Zeppelin Opening Slot

3/18/08, 10:35 am EST

Velvet Revolver is the frontrunner to open up for Led Zeppelin if the band were to go on a full reunion tour, says VR’s Duff McKagan. “I understand that we have it, although I imagine there will be plenty of bands prepared to kick and punch us out of the way for the privilege!” said McKagan. One of those bands who will likely fight it out is the Cult, as lead singer Ian Astbury told a Cincinnati crowd last November that his band would be opening for the Zep reunion tour. Another potential wrench in the works would be Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland’s tour with a reunited Stone Temple Pilots. No Zeppelin reunion tour has been announced, as Robert Plant has scheduling commitments to his joint tour with Alison Krauss until September.

Zep does NOT need an opener. Did they ever? And I agree with kj bamford, Bono has not been interesting or passionate in years.

oldtimer56 | 3/22/2008, 12:29 am EST

Zep toured in 1977 with a band called Detective, but who the hell was that and no one cared. Saw ‘em on May 31, 1977 in Greensboro, N.C. and Detective never played because they were late leaving NY while birthday partying… Witness to history..

Jimmy The K | 3/21/2008, 10:35 pm EST

Hey VR:Chris Cornell isn’t in a band right now…

Manticyde | 3/21/2008, 9:07 pm EST

Most of you guys have great points. Alas, it really doesn’t matter who would open up for Zep. Perhaps since Pearl Jam was mentioned, we should go all out on that thought and have Temple of the Dog show up and that way we could get both Vedder and Chris Cornell to blow us away. Maybe the Foo Fighters, even on a modern level their styles could easily mesh into the concert of a lifetime, everytime. Rock on.

Eddie Weese | 3/21/2008, 6:29 pm EST

every one knw`s weesediverfrom michigan`s on the bill to open for led zepplin…

transoniq johnny | 3/21/2008, 5:22 pm EST

Well, well well - Does anybody remember “Widespread Panic” (in your hedge row)hahahahaha

LZ has always been dodgy with the press. More rumours and innuendo as Robert P has stated.
HOWEVER, NO OPENING ACTS WILL SHARE THE MARQUEE! ARE YOU ALL INSANE?

Mommytime | 3/21/2008, 3:17 pm EST

Who really cares who is opening for led zeppelin, who ever it is just filling the time, get the set over with and let Led Zeppelin take the stage, any band opening for zeppelin is going to be inconsequential. Its not like your are going for a great double bill, your are going to see led zeppelin!!

Jon | 3/21/2008, 12:33 am EST

Slash jamming with Page? That would be just the guitar lesson that Slash needs! He’s one of THE most overrated players on the planet.

kj bamford | 3/20/2008, 6:23 pm EST

you guys are all idiots…….i’ll give it up for pearl jam as an opening act…..but let’s be honest…U2 sucks. Bono thinks he’s jesus and the only decent material they have ever put out was joshua tree. you want to talk about sleeping through an opening act, well than i couldn’t think of a boring band to book than U2? I think Velvet would be a kick ass opener…when that band hits the stage they don’t stop kicking ass until it’s time to get off! I have another suggestion…..why don’t you throw the black crowes up there w/ the mighty Zep? the page crowes shows live at the greek were amazing! in my eyes they are one of the only true rock bands left? they have never once dissapointed me! plus they are much more of a fit for a zep opening act…..not only can they rock n roll w/ the best of them but they are also a throw back to the 1970’s style rock that is missing in the world today? they to refuse to comprimise or sell out and haven’t through out there entire career…..same as the mighty zep……in the end it doesn’t matter who opens the show cuz Zep is going to be worth it in itself….and if i do disagree w/ the opening act it just gives me more time to booze it up in the parking lot before the show!!!!

Tim DeLaughter, singer of Polyphonic Spree said that they’re in the running to be an opener for any possible Led Zep tour. He met Robert Plant at a festival over in England a few years ago and Plant has said he’s a fan of the band.

stu | 3/18/2008, 11:59 pm EST

velvet revolver wouldnt be bad, who wouldnt want the possibility of slash and page playing on the same stage…but still, pearl jam opening would be the most mind blowing show imaginable
what about a new opener every show? that way you’d get to hear from established bands like VR, and maybe allow for some relatively unknown bands that zeppelin are fans of, give them a shot in the limelight

Greg | 3/18/2008, 11:31 pm EST

Oops. Mastodon.

Greg | 3/18/2008, 11:25 pm EST

IF they toured, I think they would have an opening act as a means of extending the total show without Plant’s voice having to be out there to long each night.

Big mistake with Velvet Revolver. Just an average band with a lead singer who might not be reliable. Even bigger mistake with The Cult, a poorer band that nobody gives a $hit about.

I would like to see a newer band like Mastadon open. It would be a blending of the generations, and a far superior show.

led-head | 3/18/2008, 4:40 pm EST

Getting some mediocore hair metal band from the late ’80’s would definitely be the wrong way to go for Zeppelin.

led-head | 3/18/2008, 4:38 pm EST

Plant did turn down 200 million (for each member) to go on tour. I suppose he might change his mind though. They could probably do better than Velvet Revolver though for an opener.

Here`s a crazy idea. Sabbath went on tour with Dio as their singer last summer. Sabbath opening for Zeppelin? The two best heavy metal bands of all time (maybe Ozzy Sabbath was better but at this point Dio’s voice is obviously in better shape).

God, that would be amazing. Will never happen though. If they can’t have another legend like Sabbath, Springsteen, or Pearl Jam (Probably not) then I would love to see them give some unknown band like Year Long Disaster or Black Mountain some publicity as an opener.

I`m praying for a reunion tour with Dave Grohl on a drums. Maybe the Foo Fighters would open then?

The big speculatiob about an opening act is that Plant might not be able to handle howling like he did in the ’70’s for 2 hours.

rudeness | 3/18/2008, 3:39 pm EST

mylocal radio staion claims plant turned down 200millon..can anyone confirm or deny please post i think they should say yes or no and make us stop waiting

TPG | 3/18/2008, 1:43 pm EST

Zep never had an opening act….and that should continue if they hit the road in 2008. I hate opening acts. No one gives a damn. They’re simply wasting our time until the main event is ready. They give us some lame opening act at 8:30…they play for 45 minutes….they the roadies come out for another 45 minutes…then finally the band we actually paid to see.

Just get on with it already.

Nose Picker | 3/18/2008, 12:46 pm EST

Why all this speculation about an opening band for Led Zeppelin when there isn’t even going to be a Led Zeppelin tour? Plant already denied it. So who cares who opens. It ain’t gonna happen.

Mandela | 3/18/2008, 12:44 pm EST

Didnt Zep usually tour alone? Why would they wanna share this gold mine with anyone? Plus, If someone opens for them that’s bound to cut into the two and a half plus hours I expect out of them.

bloated stinky rock and roll | 3/18/2008, 12:42 pm EST

,,,,”and she’s buy-i-ing a stair-air-air-way,,,,,,,,,,to he-vun!!Come on people, it is the year 2008, these royal a-holes have had their day.

nathan | 3/18/2008, 12:33 pm EST

Weak opening act. But I guess it will make Zep sound that much better.

Hoss | 3/18/2008, 12:21 pm EST

Velvet revolver is good, but come on? There’s only one band that’s worthy to open for them: Pearl Jam. They’ve opened for the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, U2, The Who, etc… Heck, Robert Plant opened up for Pearl Jam in Chicago. PJ played Given to Fly and then Plant jumped in and started singing Going to California. They finished the set with Fool in the Rain. Vedder, Plant, Page, with Gossard and McCready, the jam sessions and solos would be crazy.

Swingline | 3/18/2008, 12:12 pm EST

These guys are all obviously fans and excited about the possibility of walking on the same stage as the greats, whether any of them will or not.
How many events in Rock and Roll, or the anticipation of them, turn
headliners into optimistic wanna-be opening acts?
That is, of course, outside of Debbie Gibson and NKOTB…

Brian | 3/18/2008, 11:56 am EST

Why not have somebody really messed up like the Beastie Boys - or Deborah Gibson!!! That would rock. NKOTB - anything that would just mess up the situation.

Jaimie | 3/18/2008, 11:40 am EST

What I wanna know is-

who thinks Zep needs an opening band!?!?!?!?!?

Chuck | 3/18/2008, 11:19 am EST

If the Led Zeppelin tour happens, that would be amazing, but didn’t Plant turn down hundreds of millions for the reunion?

Stuporfly | 3/18/2008, 10:58 am EST

I do hope the Led Zeppelin tour actually happens. But even if it doesn’t, it’s been entertaining seeing these washed up old farts jockeying for position as the support act. Who should we expect to hear from next? Staind? Creed? The possibilities are endless!
