Rolling Stone Exclusive: Coldplay’s New Album Title Revealed

3/18/08, 3:38 pm EST

Coldplay’s fourth album, due out on June 17th, will be called Viva la Vida. Singer Chris Martin chose it after seeing the phrase, which means “long live life,” on a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who endured polio, a broken spine, and chronic pain for decades. “She went through a lot of shit, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said ‘Viva la Vida,’” says Martin. “I just loved the boldness of it.”

Of course, Frida Kahlo will not be the first name that jumps to most peoples’ minds when they hear the phrase. “Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect,” says the singer, who gave Coldplay its original name, Pectoralz, and named his children Apple and Moses. “I’ve been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that ‘That’s a terrible name’. But then saying, ‘Well, fuck you, that’s what it’s called, and I’ll be proved to be right eventually’. So when Viva la Vida came along, I was kind of annoyed because I’m going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right.” Check back later this week for the full report from Coldplay’s studio sessions for Viva la Vida, and for more insight into some songs that are slated to appear on the record, click here.

Loverrrrs…
Keep on the roooad you’re onnnnn…
Once again, fans, friends, of Coldplay, they’ve delivered an entrancing, beautiful album - Viva La Vida. Opposers obviously have their opinion, as do I: simple minded individuals need not interfere with Coldplay fans, as we are open-minded and need our space for thought & contemplation.
In other words, back off haters; Coldplay is here to stay, like it or not.
But, simply my opinion.

P.S.- coldcur(@163.com), you’ve found a friend.

Coldplay is a wonderful band, but that is besides the point because my opinion does not matter. What matters is the creative power that comes from the art the band developed. It is great that the artists stretched the boundaries, made people like you discuss it and be passionate about what the title was and what it conveys.
Viva la Vida is a wonderful painting created by an amazing artist Frida Kahlo. What it meant to the band was reason enough to name the album Viva la Vida.

Anita | 7/14/2008, 10:37 am EST

whooooa another great album..COLDPLAY is a favourite..viva la vida love this one…

Caleb Schoonover | 7/3/2008, 3:49 pm EST

One of the Most amazing things about coldplay, is there walk away.
They are there own movement of music, instead of some lame ass follower. We can call it alternative or anything else we want but really, its a style no one can match. I am truelly amazed they went around finding new instruments its incredible.
Inspiration from below

I think that Cold play is very good!
in my opinion they are a Band who is evolving. Nothing wrong with that, for that reason they will be around a long time.
Just my opinion!

kika | 6/24/2008, 10:40 am EST

Coldplay! Is the strongest inspiration to all deep souls,
I cannot paint without their music, they are the reason I don’t do weed
The keep me on a high. Radiohead? Who? Coldplay is so much better!
I respect those that believe different but I feel sorry for you,
It’s obvious you just don’t get it, and its sad! So VIVA LA VIDA!
Cheers to frida…. I hope one day you see one of my paintings and get inspired too
To return the favor… Blue skies

kika | 6/24/2008, 10:33 am EST

WHAT´S WRONG WITH THE NAME?.. I LOVE IT SPECIALLY BECAUSE THEY´RE TRYING TO MAKE A TRIBUTE TO MY CULTURE AND I THINK THAT´S PERFECT, I´VE LISTENED VIOLLET HILL AND VIVA LA VIDA AND I LOVE THEM, THEY ARE JUST AMAZING! APART OF THIS.. THEY CAN CHOOSE THE NAME THEY WANT! IT IS THEIR ALBUM, ISN´T IT?

AND FOR THE HARDEST FAN.. IT´S SUPPOSED YOU WRITE “HORRIBLE” WITH “H” IN SPANISH TOO.

just bought this album and i’m playing it right now, i’m on the 3rd track. the first two are pretty good, but not the best yet. i hope the following tracks live up the “viva la vida” standard

Diana | 6/13/2008, 11:00 am EST

Fantastic title! It’s a celebration of life.

Que viva la vida! Que viva Coldplay!

John | 6/13/2008, 10:25 am EST

I thought X&Y Was there best work so far! A couple of good tracks on the new album but not as good as I expected.

XavierLane | 6/12/2008, 11:49 am EST

Coldplay irrelevant of any name or non name of generally populus are epic. They will go down in the music history of our time along with leading the way to unconventional self formed and influences lifestyles. Epic indeed and remembered indeed

Caissas | 6/11/2008, 11:53 pm EST

I can’t dissagree or agree on the title but I really love the song.

Iceman | 6/11/2008, 3:29 am EST

Not sure why people are bashing this group…at the very least they’re better than most of the crap that we are force fed these days.

More importantly, I’m curious to hear what you think this song is about…I think its about the U.S., a fallen empire, which Chris Martin compares to other fallen empires (British, Rome, to a lesser extent Christianity, which he infers to via the crusades). I’m not trying to offend anyone here, but this is my interpretation of this song.

Sarah | 6/9/2008, 6:41 pm EST

Been listening to it on myspace and it is amazing!

Barnaby | 6/7/2008, 7:39 pm EST

if you want to hear it, its not illegal, just go to Coldplay’s myspace or www.coldplay.com

Now for Oasis | 6/7/2008, 7:49 am EST

We’ve had our first taste of genius with Vica La Vida, now i cannot wait for Oasis’ upcoming album.

Mayor Quimby | 6/7/2008, 2:48 am EST

uh yeah… I can’t say I heard the alleged album and won’t say I didn’t hear it. But what I can say is that the new Coldplay album which hasn’t been released yet may or may not be possibly their best album to date. Not that I’ve heard it in entirety because that would be illegal. And illegal stuff is bad, unlike the new Coldplay album which my friend says is Very Good.

Barnaby | 6/7/2008, 2:13 am EST

i think that coldplay’s music is above so much other music out now. Grega is right, its an emotional experience. Listen to the whole album on mypsace. I can’t understand how anyone wouldn’t like them. I love every song on their new album. And sometimes i listen to a song by them and i don’t like it straight away but not being judgemental i listen to it again and then i begin to just love it and realise how amazing their songwriting and musicianship really is. To me people who bash them just seem like they don’t know what they’re talking about. give them a chance. you’ll love them

grega | 6/5/2008, 5:19 pm EST

So, What is this song Viva la Vida all about? Is it a celebration of life? It˙s kind of euphoric.

I think that all music that can bring up some kind of emotions in you is good.

Jacques | 6/5/2008, 6:29 am EST

Well i loved coldplay’s first two albums and x and y was good, so what happened? Does anyone who liked their previous material like this also? It’s so different, dissapointing for me:(

Willowmist | 6/4/2008, 12:09 pm EST

Don’t they teach critical thinking in school anymore? Clearly no one here has any appreciation for poetry or history. Viva la Vida is easily one of the best songs that I’ve heard in decades and the title (of the song and the album) is a stroke of genius.

Geisha | 6/2/2008, 2:27 am EST

Why does Viva la Vida sound so familiar? It sounds like a remake of an old 80’s song that a band like Pet Shop Boys, OMD, or New Order had sung. Is it a remake or remix of an older song? I know this song from somewhere. I just can’t place it.

Ivana | 6/1/2008, 7:03 pm EST

I really don’t think that the title’s that bad. And even if it is,so what?! Listen to their great music and don’t get so dramatic about the title!

Arijit | 6/1/2008, 5:58 pm EST

I see it as the name and the background of the name.It means whole lotta positive pain of life! just adds the gravity to the meaning. Keep up the good stuff!!!!

Great Stuff | 5/26/2008, 1:43 pm EST

The first two songs I have heard are absolutly awesome. The lyrics are prefect and the melody does more than justice to complete the song. RJ10019’s opinion is the song “Viva la Vida” is a rip off from “Hong Kong Garden” that comparison makes about as much sense as calling the song “Hong Kong Garden”, it ought to be called “Hong Kong Garbage” and ranked in the top 5 of worst songs in human history. This is another great song and I will be a great album. Along with greatness comes pointless criticism.

gonna have to agree with george on this one, i mean you really shouldn’t be making a sweeping statement like coldplay has had more influence than radiohead when you dont even know a radiohead song. go listen to ok computer, the radiohead album which created the sound coldplay essentially copies to this day. i like coldplay, a lot, and love radiohead, but you really cant compare the influence of the two.

george | 5/24/2008, 9:13 am EST

Obviously you dont listen to music enough at all, because saying that colplay has made more of a difference than a band like radiohead? seriously dont post stuff if you have no idea about anything thats music… coldplay is basic… radiohead continues to evolve and show all of there talents, each album… coldplay has strayed from what they shudve stayed by keeping there own sound, i cudnt tell colplay anymore, music is basic and boring… All of these things takin into account Radiohead is the god of music

Kristina | 5/23/2008, 8:36 pm EST

I love that he named his album after one of Frida Kahlo’s paintings. Her story is something to recognize.

I love coldplay, and I can’t wait for their album to come out!!

Fly | 5/23/2008, 7:09 pm EST

The name of the album? Is Coldplay better than Radiohead? Who cares? All you should care about is the message. Seriously some of you sound like little children. Where did the Radiohead/Coldplay battle come from? I don’t remember reading it in the article. What’s the message on the album? Listen for a change…

Jerome | 5/23/2008, 12:01 am EST

I am a pretty typical music fan. I love music, but don’t follow a lot of different bands like some of you.

That being said…I couldn’t name you a Radiohead song off the top of my head. Maybe it’s due to the lack of radio play or whatever, but I imagine the loyal Radiohead fans may not be quite realistic at times!

I’m not a huge Coldplay fan either, but I think it’s safe to say their music has made quite a bigger impact than Radiohead.

The new song viva la vida is pretty cool too. Coldplay has a simple but unique sound and feel to their music. In today’s culture, Coldplay is about as big as it gets I would say in the music world.

lynsey | 5/20/2008, 9:12 pm EST

Why does the title matter? And even so, I think it is a good title, and sounds like something Coldplay would use. Their music is mind-blowing, and that should be all that matters.

AStarAboveU | 5/19/2008, 10:48 pm EST

Coldplay is definitely one of the most epic bands of all time, and I don’t think it really matters what the hell they name their album, the music is what really matters.

In my opinion, alot of people just find things to pick at, and it just shows their level of appreciation.

Chris Martin is a great writer, a great piano player, a great singer, and an overall fantastic and unique musician. Anyone that can appreciate Coldplay is good in my eyes, and only someone with great taste in art and music can understand their reason for naming their album whatever they choose.

Bill | 5/18/2008, 3:40 am EST

It’s 1991. Brian Eno produces an album that reinvented a cherished piece of the musical landscape. It too had a title featuring a mix of other and English. It was called Achtung Baby.

Coincidence? I think not. Flash forward to 2008. Coldplay is attempting a departure, no doubt, and U2 is definitely a roadmap here. Let’s hope it’s even half as successful.

RJ10019 | 5/13/2008, 8:14 pm EST

Title here doesn’t matter. Having heard 3 of the songs already, I think it’s gonna be a mixed bag of treats for listeners…..some snickers bars and some boxes of raisins. Of the 3 I’ve heard, Violet Hill and Lost! are quality Coldplay songs while Viva la Vida - how shall I say this - blows….it’s about spot-on to a Coldplay remake of Siouxsie And The Banshees ‘Hong Kong Garden’ — the version off of the Marie Antoinette soundtrack. No Joke. Hear the song on youtube and (when you hear Viva la Vida) tell me Coldplay didn’t steal the song! Uggh, spend more time in the studio please! This may mark the downfall if the rest of the album is anything like this…I have faith it’s not.

Kevitivity | 5/12/2008, 4:17 pm EST

It is a horrible name, and Lesbian Communists aren’t as cool as they used to be. Oh well, lets hope the music is good.

coldplay the legend | 5/10/2008, 6:53 pm EST

their music talks !!!!!

kevin | 5/8/2008, 2:52 pm EST

what’s in a name - look at some of the album titles of some of the greatest albums of all time
it’s about the MUSIC - and judging from the originality of the title track - it’s going to be a good one

SaywhatSadie | 5/5/2008, 11:03 pm EST

“Viva La Vida”…not the best. I would expect music inspired by Kahlo’s painting and life. The title is the opposite of the music I’ve heard from Coldplay. Throwing “or Death And His Friends” on the end of the title doesn’t help at all…I say…rename the whole thing with a title of a song. Like X&Y. Or with a piece of a lyric. Leave it til the end!!!

imnotcatholic | 5/5/2008, 9:40 pm EST

You know, I’ve been reading about these people who think Chris Martin’s gay, but he’s married with two kids, and about all tht emotionless crap, have you ever heard Fix You? How about The Scientist? Is THAT emotionless? Oh, and you know, I really am beginning to wonder why pople care so much. Do you think THom and Chris cares?

coldhead | 5/5/2008, 2:04 pm EST

what is the title of the album?

Hirko | 5/4/2008, 6:27 pm EST

coldplay is a great group……but they have nothing on Radiohead…..not even close

Brad | 5/4/2008, 3:13 am EST

When i first heard coldplay i was like this is the best band ever! i just can’t wait for this new album to come out in Aus and i hope coldplay stays together for ever i love their music :)

Nitram Sirhc | 5/3/2008, 9:36 am EST

I liked coldplay very much with their first two albums … The more accoustic sound. In the album X&Y too many synths pass by and they added the distorted guitar, and when I hear ‘violet hill’ of the new album I hear the nice accoustic sound AND the distortion AND the synths. Shall that work out? I do like ‘violet hill’, but i wonder whether the other songs of the new album are that interesting … And this title ‘Viva La Vida Or …’ … live with it. What about ‘Parachutes’, ‘X&Y’, those titles ain’t good either. I do like the title ‘A rush of blood to the head’… but hey, what’s in a name … Just listen the music.

Chrs!

cooki | 5/2/2008, 11:21 am EST

i love coldplay and absolutely everything they do! theur new song ‘violet hill’ is amazing i can’t stop playing it. i’m very happy they are back!!! :)

lalo | 5/1/2008, 6:42 am EST

coldplay put itself on a trip somewhere i dont like and, as for the new advances, they are still going there …

no way back?
i might be wrong (hope so)

ambiguouslynamedbloggeek | 4/30/2008, 10:15 am EST

i love the hate-filled bile on these things…i don’t HATE coldplay, but almost, lol. radiohead are pretentious twats who need to lighten up, however they have taken so many more risks in their career and embraced electronica and other genres whereas coldplay just release one album of whiny-bitch power ballads after another. just because this new track has some distorted guitar everyone’s like ‘oh my god, so edgy and brave and fresh!’ radiohead are in a different league.

Emilie | 4/26/2008, 3:46 pm EST

“Viva la Vida” isn’t a bad name really, I like it and I also like “Death and all is friend”, these two phrases juste don’t go together, it fantastic! lol

Synth | 4/16/2008, 5:32 pm EST

The title will not be Death and All His Friends, or a combination or Viva and Death, only Viva la Vida, unless they change their minds last minute. Release date is obviously on June 17th in U.S. Don’t bash the album.. You haven’t even heard it yet. As for the title? Get used to it! It’s not your decision, nor can you do anything about it. Just let the album come, and we’ll see what happens. I have confidence it will be awesome! Viva la Vida!!!!!!:D :D :D

Synth | 4/16/2008, 5:31 pm EST

I must say, the title is awesome. it sows a total change in their musical direction. With X&Y having some downer songs on it (meaning slightly depressing or sad), Viva la Vida.. Long Live Life.. Shows a more upbeat, happier title. Although a number of the titles on the new album sound more glum than happy, I’m sure they’ll still be wonderful. According to R.S., who got to review most of the songs on the new album, they’re all very great and different, and especially sound more unique.

brklyn22 | 4/1/2008, 8:53 pm EST

coldplay, radiohead the U.S. and you all are going to hell, that’s for sure! You will see!

Well said Caitlin, Radiohead and Coldplay are both solid bands and deserve respect ….also, don’t some of you people have better things to do than argue?

Person | 3/22/2008, 7:53 pm EST

I just want you all to know that Radiohead is amazing and went through a lot to make music and I doubt half of you play an instrument and know how the music industry works. Your comments mean shit because bands like Radiohead are still making money and your a fucking teen who makes minimium wage.

close minded fucks | 3/22/2008, 7:14 pm EST

i hate those who hate bands bc they dont like their kind of music, i mean i understand if you dont like their music but when you start to make fun of them, or make up shit like chris martin is gay just doesnt make sence anymore. i mean hey im not a big fan of country but i respect their skill, they all work hard and if you believe it or not people love that music, so when you start to look for forumz so you could trash music, then get the fuck out of that room and get a life.

caitlin | 3/22/2008, 12:11 am EST

whoever likes coldplay and not radiohead is CRAZY, they are both good…why not respect both?

people who get in fights on ROLLINGSTONE are surprisingly hilarious.

craig | 3/21/2008, 10:54 pm EST

“yuck” you are a moron and all your posts suck. I’m quite surprised you have the brain capacity to even use a keyboard, i give you credit for that, get a life you loser.

brklyn22 | 3/21/2008, 8:42 pm EST

coldplay with a new album?…radiohead with new album and tour?..who gives a fuck!…. it all sounds the same lately, chris martin needs to fuck more and thom yorke should have a plastic surgery asap…gee, comon, no one here knows shit anyways, it’s so fucking obvious!

yuck. | 3/21/2008, 7:39 pm EST

i wish coldplay would stop making music period.

ME | 3/21/2008, 4:31 pm EST

1st death and all his friends is much better even if it sounds “emoish” but does it matter?

Stephen | 3/21/2008, 3:43 pm EST

One last point, I don’t see the comparison between Radiohead and Coldplay. Yes Ok Comp and AROBTTH are great albums but thats the end of the comparison.

CP have influences but I don’t think its bends era RH, The vocal delivery is classic Urban Hymn’s era the Verve, the themes and percussion more Travis ‘The Man Who based’.

Same with Muse, sure Matt likes to hold his notes so long hes forced to inhale deeply providing a sense of urgency.
But thats the only comparison I see to RH (except that Muse are as schitsophrenic as RH)

Voice of Reason | 3/21/2008, 8:35 am EST

There is no question that Coldplay draws heavy influence from Radiohead. In fact, it would be difficult to find a music critic to disagree with that statement. However, Coldplay is an excellent band in their own right. Yes, they are a pop-rock band, as opposed to the more “prog-rock” Radiohead and yes, they have a loyal following of 15 year old girls; does that make them talentless? A Rush of Blood to the Head is in fact an excellent album; however, I should be clear that it is no “O.K. Computer.” In all, I am looking forward to this Coldplay release, in the hopes that they steer away from their “pop-esque” sound of X&Y and turn back to the gritty, edgy sounds of A Rush of Blood to the Head with a mix of new sounds, new influences, and new songs.

Blast away!

Bukowski | 3/21/2008, 8:30 am EST

radiohead is good but i’m so sick of their brainwashed fans always comparing to other bands.the only simmilarity between coldplay and radiohead is that they both make great music.stop riding thom yorkes cock there is other music out there!!

Chris Martin | 3/20/2008, 11:25 pm EST

Shut up, it’s a great title.

Nimas Lee | 3/20/2008, 9:21 pm EST

In all honesty, why does it matter what a CD is called.
Like / hate Coldplay, it doesn’t matter, because that is your impression of them thus far, and not of their new work.
It’s the music that matters, don’t forget that.

Don’t get to caught up with the genre stereotypes, saying if you like indie all indie bands are good, you like british - rock, only british rock is good. Theres good and bad to each band, and each genre in music. What matters is what appeals to you personally

BrownEyes | 3/20/2008, 9:10 pm EST

Very true.
Music is all comparisons and influences.
Don’t judge the music because of the CD.
So what if the title is a little different this time? I don’t think Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y are very similar. What were people saying back then?

A | 3/20/2008, 9:08 pm EST

Amen Q-tip!
Finally someone actually has some facts to support their idiotic b.s.
Coldplay has started just like all the other indie bands, and guess what? They made success. Innovation is all the rage these days, sure. But without even listening to the CD, don’t make stupid accusations about the sound without even hearing it. That’s the problem with people, they stereotype things before they even give it a try.

If your pleased with the screaching sounds of MOST emo / screamo music, and wish to see this new “emotional” genre continue, then by all means, bash coldplay. Take sometime to read the lyrics sometimes, listen to the melodies. People who claim coldplay has a few chords are the mainstream, listening to only what the corrupt radio gives them. OF course you’ll come to hate a song if you hear it 50 million times! And usually, it’s not the best work on a cd.

Coldplay have a wide range of sounds on each album, and if you’ve followed them throughout the years you would see that they’ve experimented with acoustic sound, more piano / electric guitar driven sounds, then more synth - sounds and other electronics, even wine glasses. As i said before, innovation is what every band strives for. Just because a band who started out unpopular and is now one of the “world’s biggest bands” doesn’t mean they’ve sold out, rather, that’s why i respect coldplay, because they keep trying out new things, just like they did with parachutes, arobtth, and x and y! It’s not a new thing that they’re experimenting. And just because bands like Radiohead were there back ago, and don’t get me wrong, they’re glorious as well, doesn’t make them wonderful for trying new things, and since coldplay is a newer band bad for immitating bands. Radiohead is also in a sense trying to “copy” a band, because of their heavy influence with band’s such as R.E.M.! That’s the music industry today, comparisons. If it’s not a 60’s band its from the 90’s…it’s never going to stop.

q tip | 3/20/2008, 2:58 pm EST

first off, the new coldplay album is called, “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends”…

second, the majority of people who are posting anti-coldplay posts here are college aged man-boys who believe in the 9/11 conspiracy and are homophobic (Even though they all want to secretly suck thom york’s dick).

third, if you all think coldplay’s music is so lame, then why dont you go make bands yourself? oh yeah thats right… you all do. and they all sound worse than deerhoof, which i didnt think was possible.

fourth, if you actually DID understand music theory, then you would know that coldplay’s chord changes for the most part are extremely unique, due to many of their songs being in alternate tunings. actually, a majority of their chord progressions are major 7th chords and sus9th chords, which is a very “jazzy” (and complex) chord sequence. anyone calling their songs “un-original” or “boring” are the same people who listen to indie bands that play the same 3 major chords for 8 minutes continuously.

finally, you are all the same type of people who were probably jacking off to “parachutes” when you were 15 and it was the hot new thing. now suddenly because they’re “mainstream” you just cant take it anymore. ok, well thats fine, go listen to thom yorke sing like a dying cat over synth beat and continue to think you’re so cool and original, like the other millions.

Stephen | 3/20/2008, 4:57 am EST

Looking at lyrics to coldplay songs alongside Martin’s soulful and expressive delivery I don’t know how anyone can deny that coldplay are talented.

ibmhousestud | 3/20/2008, 4:13 am EST

in many crown. a bit of with a and saw to my parents to our pretty snapping the forests I confessed damage

prospekt | 3/20/2008, 1:52 am EST

Their actually going to call the album “Death and All His Friends” this article was printed b4 they had even decided between the 2 i.e. (viva la vida) or (death and all his friends,) i personally like it, it has more depth and meaning to the darker nature of the albums songs.

gus | 3/19/2008, 11:47 pm EST

well this post are gettin too pathetic it turned as a ‘listen what i like’ post. the people dont understand that whatever they say the people is not gonna change their taste of music. and considering there are millions of fans of colplay is more difficult at least if you are dalai lama , jesus or buda. lol there are a lot of people who are scared of coldplay phenomenom. obviously coldplay is huge for that kind of reaction

he | 3/19/2008, 11:30 pm EST

wtf is so great about ‘re-invention’ and striving for a different sound all the time? Coldplay’s sound is obviously awesome if it’s been so successful thus far. all the ppl criticizing them for not being inventive or original enough need to get a life

geebeez | 3/19/2008, 10:06 pm EST

it changed my way of listening to music when i found out about radiohead….i used to like coldplay, but then after finding out about RH, then about other music like dub reggae, yes, that might not have relation to this topic, but it does in the fact that coldplay seems to TRY to put other influences, but they never hit the right way to do it…as Radiohead, and MOST other classic bands have…

coldplay are massively popular, but that doesn’t make them amazing in any sense…mediocre at BEST!

gus | 3/19/2008, 10:01 pm EST

well i dont kile radiohead sorry but i like coldplay. im not gonna change my taste of music just for a loser who says coldplay is a rradiohead copy and if chris said that it was only diplomacy just like he said about travis, arcade of fire. well i only like coldplay so what?

ha | 3/19/2008, 7:59 pm EST

praise radiohead for originality

call out coldplay for copying Radiohead’s music….which chris martin said… “we are the radiohead for people who can’t take their raw brilliance”

and that is why radiohead don’t comment on coldplay either.

and Rush of Blood….is NOT at all on par with Ok Computer…Ok Computer is utter genius, while once again Rush of Blood…is like a Thom Yorke, but without a gift for true and raw emotion…

I liked Parachutes…than they started copying a brilliant band.

Stephen | 3/19/2008, 7:49 pm EST

All you people who think Coldplay are rubbish…

Your all idiots, look at A Rush of blood to the head, best album since Ok Computer, yes its that good.

Sincere, musically accomplished and pretty dam unique. (Sounds like Radiohead who we lavish with praise)

So yeah, fair enough if coldplay arnt your thing but at least have the common sense to admit they are one of the most talented bands around at the moment.

J-Dot | 3/19/2008, 7:30 pm EST

Wow you guys are pretty ignorant

katherine. | 3/19/2008, 7:15 pm EST

theres no point of all you fuckers commenting if its just to bitch about how much you hate their album name or the band. if you dont have anything positive to say, fuck off.

viva coldplay!

sdldawn | 3/19/2008, 5:57 pm EST

dumbest album title of all time… for the sake of music don’t release it in such a shitty title

J Biggs | 3/19/2008, 3:10 pm EST

They don’t hand out grammys for album titles..

nl | 3/19/2008, 2:45 pm EST

relax people…

barf | 3/19/2008, 2:00 pm EST

,,,they should call themselves “coldsuck”.

Tegar Lenz | 3/19/2008, 12:44 pm EST

Yes, coldplay proving once again that they are the masters of originality. If colplay had existed at any other time in history they would have zero success. There’s no competition anymore and people are so desperate for the next big thing that they’re willing to grasp at the crappy hollowness that is coldplay.

coldplay is yucky | 3/19/2008, 12:38 pm EST

i think cold play is icky. the icky-est band in the world. i know this is not a very kind thing to say, but RS deletes my posts when i use naughty words like “crap”. i would use a word like “crap” to describe these bad, bad musicians, but someone at RS takes it as some kind of threat to the fragile minds of us RS readers. too bad, ‘cus coldplay is truly the not-goodest band on the planet.

duende_71 | 3/19/2008, 12:32 pm EST

Concrete Blonde called, they want their song title back.

gus | 3/19/2008, 11:58 am EST

well i see this coments its against coldplay not the title rofl .why are you here? hehe well coldplay have a lot of fans around the world. you cant change that fact but is a free world if you think coldplay its shit good for you. well there are so many people in the world who dont think the same as you do.

corban17 | 3/19/2008, 11:47 am EST

Colplay, for people who hate good music. If you want meaningful lyrics look elsewhere. I think the Pina Colada Song is deeper and more meaningful then anything they’ve produced so far.

gus | 3/19/2008, 11:42 am EST

well guys if you want original and pure of heart music. form your own band and try to compite with coldplay. name your band’the original heartfull pureness’. you dont know a shit of music cause you cant accept the opinion of others. just listen the music that you like if you think coldplay is gay, satanic, or whatever dont listen to them but dont bother other people who dont think the same as you do.

gus | 3/19/2008, 11:31 am EST

i have 26 years old a wife and two kids. all my life ive listen heavy metal the old school my father was muscian he has a good collection of vinilos. and i know frida kahlo and her life its an excellent name for a album. but if you dont like dont bother other people who like be mature.colplay its an awesome band but they have a youth carrier.i think this album gonna improve their status. but if you dont like them i dont care. its music the people can hear what they like.

Sanchez | 3/19/2008, 11:25 am EST

JesperG | 3/19/2008, 11:24 am EST

I can’t wait for clocks part V, this time with spanish guitar. Not even the great Eno can save this group of talentless hacks.

Tabbin | 3/19/2008, 11:13 am EST

I can see the appeal of liking coldplay if you’re a 15-year-old girl, but not if your a guy. Unless your just claiming to like them to get the girls. That’s still unacceptable, but at least I can understand that.

gus | 3/19/2008, 10:55 am EST

excellent title. its making react people.:P

gus | 3/19/2008, 10:45 am EST

well they have 11 years already. but if there are people who coment and waste their time comenting something they dont like that means they are great : ). good title and with meaning.

Kirio Eleison | 3/19/2008, 10:37 am EST

FTA: “…says the singer, who gave Coldplay its original name, Pectoralz, and named his children Apple and Moses.”

Snarkometer is in the red. Detecting high levels of snark.

Anonymous | 3/19/2008, 10:19 am EST

If Coldplay is one of only a handful of good bands out there then I concur, this is a sorry age for music because Coldplay blows. The music industry really sold a lot of people on this band. If you think anyone will be talking about Coldplay in ten years, your mistaken.

Tiago | 3/19/2008, 6:22 am EST

Terrible title. Looks like they had two spanish lessons and came up with this.

Jay | 3/19/2008, 3:02 am EST

Viva el papel de empapelar

prospekt | 3/19/2008, 12:54 am EST

fuck all you conservative dip shits, this will be their best album yet,go listen to your shitty emo music or death metal or whatever the fuck you listen too.its just an album title!wheni listen to an album i actually like to hear the songs before i judge close minded fuck faces, go hang yourselves or worse yet go buy a panic at the disco album or one republic album. These guys are one of the only handfull of decent bands left in this shitty age for music fucking period?

zimmer45 | 3/18/2008, 11:14 pm EST

Maybe they should call it Viva Velveeta. It can be sponsored by Kraft and they can do some really cool cheese commercials.

Gedney | 3/18/2008, 11:11 pm EST

Liking Colplay is like admitting that your an avid Journey fan. Just a tad bit embarrassing. I don’t understand their popularity, but I do understand why fifteen-year-old girls would listen to them.

Anonymous | 3/18/2008, 10:50 pm EST

stfu ass faces, especially the guy who thinks coldplay is “gay”, you close minded fucks dont know shit so shut the fuck up.

ROSH | 3/18/2008, 10:42 pm EST

i love coldplay and those who dont are folls ….. the title is AMAZING AND EVEN THEIR MUSIC

ROSH | 3/18/2008, 10:40 pm EST

HEY THOSE WHO HAVE BLAMED COLDPLAY FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FUCK THOSE HO HATE COLDPLAY!!!! I LOVE THEM

nice | 3/18/2008, 10:38 pm EST

lol I would’ve preferred the album title to be Prospekt, but this one’s not bad…

agentforce | 3/18/2008, 10:15 pm EST

There’s nothing more genuine than a guy who has it all singing about a world of despair and emptiness. I see Coldplay opening for Hootie And The Blowfish in a few years.

fun | 3/18/2008, 9:36 pm EST

to: this is so dumb

hey, you should read the article talking about the songs of the album, and i think they are deep songs. (judging by the lyrics.)

Frida Kahlo | 3/18/2008, 9:27 pm EST

is turning in her grave right now. To be degraded to this level and be abused in recognition of this corporate band must be too painful. She would be ashamed.

Spainfanatic | 3/18/2008, 9:25 pm EST

this is so dumb | 3/18/2008, 9:24 pm EST

HOW LOW CAN THEY GO?
Coldplay to release such a heartless, emotionless album that is simply a symbol of the state of the music industry today. This is so depressing. Viva la Vida? Might as well run around like a puppet with donkey tails and bikinis.

TrevTan | 3/18/2008, 8:29 pm EST

I’m not the only one who thinks coldplay is the gayest band in the world, right? I’ve never seen a band become so successful from doing so little. Most bands have to earn the level of success coldplay has been graced with. It seems like there’s this whole community of people out there who are tired of waiting for the next great band to come along so they said “what the hell, coldplay will do.” Terrible lyrics, unimaginative songwriting, not a shred of originality, and a whiny-voiced singer. Apparently this appeals to a lot of people.

DAVID | 3/18/2008, 7:59 pm EST

SIIIIIIII VIVA LA VIDA COLDPLAY LOVES LATIN AMERICA!!!!!!!!! ES EXCELENTE!!!!!!!

toby | 3/18/2008, 7:57 pm EST

Anonymous | 3/18/2008, 6:38 pm EST

did u fucks read why he titled it that? who ever is against the title really needs to stop finding something to bitch about.

Mike | 3/18/2008, 6:32 pm EST

What a great name!

Macfisto | 3/18/2008, 6:21 pm EST

CPPP : Macfisto did read it correctly…it was changed since (and others did see 14th as per Coldplay forums)

ben | 3/18/2008, 6:17 pm EST

Not crazy about the title but hey… If the record is the shit then the title will seem good, if the record sucks people will trash the name even more… It’s just a name…
I can’t wait to hear it though! (wasn’t crazy about X&Y but loooove parachutes)

Yaay | 3/18/2008, 5:38 pm EST

lol, Ricky Martin, Chris Martin. Aw well. Don’t judge the book by its’ cover! …or name. Really looking forward to this album.

CPPP | 3/18/2008, 5:34 pm EST

i think people should wait till the album comes out, ‘cos it may all fit in once you have listened to it and Macfisto should read it more clearly..its the 17th not 14th

dr hilarious | 3/18/2008, 5:04 pm EST

well, to be fair it’s better than “x&y”.
That, my friends, was a truly unfortunate title.

Mo | 3/18/2008, 4:54 pm EST

I love it. ^.^

“We live in a beautiful world” “Long live life” it all fits.

dan | 3/18/2008, 4:45 pm EST

They really tried this time but they still picked a title too good for the music

thehardestfan | 3/18/2008, 4:43 pm EST

the worst title ever…for the best album ever..let’s hope!!!Gooo coldplay GOOO….( it’s orrible viva la vida..)

CS | 3/18/2008, 4:43 pm EST

‘Viva Las Pretentious Douchebags’ is a more appropriate title.

red | 3/18/2008, 4:24 pm EST

oh shut the hell up, if my morning jacket named their new album that you’d probably all be getting boners off it.

Joke Off | 3/18/2008, 4:24 pm EST

Is Chris Martin related to Ricky Martin?

Pedro | 3/18/2008, 4:23 pm EST

Soy un individuo español y uniforme pienso que el título no es ningún bueno. ¿No puede Coldplay pensar en un título mejor del álbum que eso? Tales retrasos.

Anonymous | 3/18/2008, 4:18 pm EST

PARACHUTES was a GREAT album, from start to finish.

Then each album since then, has sucked, with the exception of a few good songs…

I have very low expectations for ‘Viva La Vida’. Which I agree, is a horrible title.

Meecho Meecho | 3/18/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Title sucks the big one.

chris martin | 3/18/2008, 4:11 pm EST

Stop pestering me you fools or I’ll be forced to name one of your kids too. Viva La Coldplay

Macfisto | 3/18/2008, 4:08 pm EST

I hope they put more effort in the album than in the title…and June 14th?! Really? A Saturday? Doubtful!

Howdy | 3/18/2008, 4:04 pm EST

really? hahahahahaha

hahahah | 3/18/2008, 4:03 pm EST

omg, what a HORRIBLE album name!!! even if it’s great music, that title is just HORRIBLE
>_

Italo Rossi | 3/18/2008, 3:59 pm EST
