Weekend Rock List: Best Drinking Songs

3/14/08, 5:07 pm EST

With the refreshment-heavy South By Southwest underway and St. Patrick’s Day on Monday, we’re asking our soon-to-be-inebriated readers for the best songs to soundtrack bending elbows at your local tavern. We’ll compile the picks during St. Patty’s Day Parade and present the Best Drinking for that night, because this Rock List can totally kick Party Shuffle’s ass. Before you mull on it over a six-pack of Guinness, check out our picks:

Journey – “Don’t Stop Believin’ ”
The Outfield – “Your Love”
The Pogues – “Dirty Old Town”
Neil Diamond – “Sweet Caroline”
Run-DMC – “It’s Tricky”

Charles Crossley, Jr. | 3/16/2008, 6:14 am EST

I’d say country songs should have been allowed on this list, except if they were, this list would be almost nothing but. That said, an honorable mention should be given to “Your Cheating Heart” by Hank Williams, “Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down” by Merle Haggard and “Friends In Low Places” by Garth Brooks.

This list on Palm Sunday weekend? Well, in that case, another honorable mention goes out to “Jesus Is Just Alright” by the Doobie Brothers. . . .

1. “Lola”, The Kinks
2. “I Feel Fine”, The Beatles
3. “Take It Easy”, The Eagles
4. “Susie Q” by Creedence Clearwater Revival
5. “Roxanne”, The Police
6. “Tubthumping”, Chumbawumba (this song could never sound better than sung by a bar full of drunken people—piss the night away!)
7. “The Piano Has Been Drinking”, Tom Waits
8. “Born To Be Wild”, Steppenwolf
9. “More Than A Feeling”, Boston
10. “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar
11. “You Shook Me All Night Long”, AC/DC
12. “Gimme Three Steps”, Lynyrd Skynyrd
13. “Rock And Roll All Night”, Kiss
14. “It’s Only Rock & Roll”, the Rolling Stones
15. “Bang A Gong”, T. Rex
16. “Love Is The Drug”, Roxy Music
17. “Up On Cripple Creek”, The Band
18. “Hot Blooded”, Foreigner
19. “Ball And Chain”, Big Mama Thornton or Big Brother & The Holding Company
20. “Lithium”, Nirvana
21. “What Made Milwaukee Famous”, Jerry Lee Lewis or Rod Stewart
22. “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35”, Bob Dylan
23. “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”, John Lee Hooker or George Thoroughgood
24. “Red, Red Wine”, Neil Diamond
25. “Margaritaville”, Jimmy Buffett
26. “Comfortably Numb”, Pink Floyd
27. “Rock & Roll”, Led Zeppelin
28. “All Right Now”, Free
29. “When Will I Be Loved”, the Everly Brothers
30. “When I Come Around”, Green Day

I’ll second Steel Dragon In Texas and add “My Ding-A-Ling” by Chuck Berry

Ando | 3/16/2008, 1:54 pm EST

There are several songs – love’em or hate’em – they have to be on the best drinking songs:

Billy Joel – Piano Man (Who goes to a piano bar not to drink? Have they ever not played this song…. Checkmate)

Neil Diamond – Sweet Caroline.. Bum Bum Bum

Bon Jovi – Living on a Prayer (Whether your 50yr or 20 yrs – every drunken duder thinks he can whale out this song… sometimes it hurts)

Elton John – Tiny Dancer (You can thank Almost Famous for single handedly bring this back)

AC/DC – You shook Me All Night Long (They have 5 which could be considered – this one will even make your grandpa do the Angus Air Guitar)…..

Much Love,

Ando

Can anyone help me PLEASE!!! theres this one irish drinking song I heard in a pub the other night and cannot find it anywhere… I dont know who sings it or the name of it the choras goes something like “I drink becuase I drink” please e-mail me.. thanks every one!! !!!Integrahov03@yahoo.com

Herr Bizaro | 9/23/2008, 4:17 am EST

most of these songs aren’t even drinking songs! I hope none of you are Irish, because these don’t fly well in a pub and you’d know that. A drinking song is a song devoted to alcohol, not just referencing it. I’ll name a couple that most people will enjoy and are good enough to do.

-”Fuck You I’m Drunk” because it’s hilarious

-”Beer!” it’s a remake of the Carmen Suite and it is also funny

-”Bring on the Goddamn Cat”

for an extra, listen to “You Can Tell a Fighter Pilot” lol

those are it… and before anyone asks me why I didn’t put “Danny Boy” down, people do it too much and it’s about a father losing his son. not a good bar song

Paul | 9/28/2008, 3:23 pm EST

Wow, none of those are drinking songs at all.

A true list is the following:

THE dirty son of ireland | 1/30/2009, 4:33 am EST

a drinking song is something you drink to. You guys are listing songs you thing you can sing when you’re drunk. Trust me, I attend a lot of Karaoke, probably more than the average person and I promise you, YOU DON”T SING IT AS WELL AS YOU THINK. In fact, I have a tendency to turn the speaker towards the wall and sometimes unplug it. Drinking song inspire drinking, Karaoke inspires drinking. It’s not the same thing. Dropkick. the Pogues. Bouncing Souls. Sometimes Flogging Molly. Don’t think just because you want to sing it when you’re drunk that it makes it a drinking song. Come to a Dirty Sons show one night and you might understand otherwise, leave the drinking songs to the pros.

Roy Bob Campbell | 2/4/2009, 5:00 pm EST
