Nine Inch Nails’ “Ghosts I-IV” Makes Trent Reznor an Instant Millionaire

3/13/08, 9:35 am EST

Trent Reznor has gone public with the sum total of all the money he made in first week sales after self-releasing his instrumental album Ghosts I-IV: $1,619,420. The album, released on March 2nd in a multitude of different formats at nin.com, “immediately sold out” of its run of 2,500 “Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition” versions (complete with vinyl, deluxe packaging and a Reznor autograph), each with a $300 price tag. In all, 781,917 transactions were made for the album, with people either downloading a quarter of the album for free, downloading the entire album for $5, purchasing a physical copy for $10 or getting the non-ultra-deluxe limited edition version for $75. Unlike Radiohead, who have still not released the total numbers and dollar figures from their In Rainbows experiment, Reznor likely revealed his first-week stats as a way to show fellow artists in the same weight class how successful they can be without the help of a major label. We’re sure Reznor and Thom Yorke will have a nice laugh about all this if they do in fact headline Lollapalooza. Ghosts I-IV is still available for download on NIN’s site, with double-CD sets due in stores on April 8th.

Record labels are dumb.

Hahaha – it’s not like Trent was poor or anything, but I love the big “Told Ya So” he’s offered up here.

It’s become plain as daylight that the music industry shot itself in the foot – not now, but way back in 2000, maybe earlier (Napster, anyone?) I don’t like techies much more than I do record execs, but trying to pretend the Internet doesn’t exist is about the worst mistake any business can make. Not that the decreased influence of the official biz is necessarily gonna make the music any better – a lot of terrible music makes its way through digital channels, and the collapse of the monoculture unfortunately means that a lot of people hold onto their little niches like security blankets. For every great piece of art there’s about a thousand mediocre ones, and for all I know Ghosts is complete shite. But I doubt it, and I admire Reznor’s gusto – by making good on the sloganeering of “Year Zero” he lets us know it isn’t just talk. Which is pretty rare in rock stars, not to mention public figures in general.

Great to hear, Trent did it right, others should follow suit.

Can’t wait until the day the majors keel over…it has definitely started.

Just imagine a world without the crappy artists who are reliant on the majors to promote their crap.

Ah…the music will be what matters again in this future utopia.

Ghosts I-IV is a masterpiece

Reznor is the hardest working man in rock and roll. This instance gives all unsigned artists a sense of hope, the future that was once bleak, is now a vast forrest of possibilities.

BTW I must say I prefer Thom Yorke’s solo album over the recent RADIOHEAD album but then again that’s just me.

Have HEARD this thing? It sounds like it is all backing tracks with no lead? YUCK! It is not worth $5! Adrian Belew was just wasted on this!

who does it right “Trent Does Trent Does.” also, besides the “who got there first with a full album free dwnld” NIN fans know that TR has been dropping us gifts for years now. ahem, don’t forget the f’n multi tracks. oh yeah radiohead rules their so innovative, pfffft

PAIN | 4/9/2008, 12:49 am EST

Buy Manufactura or Pain Station instead. It pained me to listen to ghosts. Don’t throw your money away on trent, he has enough as is. Trent pretending to be Akira Yamaoka isn’t funny or entertaining, its just weak and pathethic.

AARRRGHH! | 6/7/2008, 12:43 pm EST

This album is complete shite. The only reason so many people bought it was becuase NIN have a huge worldwide fanbase.

And how did they get that fanbase? Sure, hard work, AND a major record label deal. NIN wouldn’t gotten to where they are now without major record labels distributing their music internationally.

Now they can just release anything without a label and still be comfortable in knowing that their devoted fans will still buy it even though it blows.

Do you think some unsigned indie band which has just as much talent as NIN would make anything near to that amount? Think about it…

For all you robitic unimaginative clones get the ghosts it gives you a soul.

digitalhardcore | 11/6/2008, 2:42 am EST

Remember that miserable future Trent painted for us in Year Zero? This album is what they’ll be playing in their elevators. Truly truly boring! The Slip isn’t bad though and that was free so I guess that kinda makes up for it.

ghosts is amazing. put on a pair of headphones and listen to it completely through. If this is boring to you, your not truly a fan of music. just because it isn’t what your used to hearing does not mean its crap or Trent is trying to be like someone else. Its nice to see artists who try new concepts and excel. go buy your pop crap and get off with that instead if thats what you want to hear.
