It finally happened: frontrunner David Archuleta stumbled on American Idol! Oh, and the Lennon/McCartney songbook was released to the show, which led to Ryan Seacrest’s three-minute boil-down of the greatest songwriters in rock history and really dull interpretations of “In My Life” (Ramiele Malubay), “If I Fell” (Jason Castro) and “Across the Universe” (Michael Johns). The mighty Archuleta bumbled the words to “We Can Work It Out,” while David Cook impressed with a rocked-out “Eleanor Rigby.” But for the five best (and worst) moments from the first Big Twelve show on Idol’s impressive new set, watch these quick clips:
5. Chikezie’s brilliant take on “She’s a Woman” — which went from “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (Paula) to “completely drunk” (Simon) — gets Ryan galloping.
4. Brooke White’s respectful “Let it Be” easily won over Randy Jackson: “The dawg is a fan!”
3. Is Carly Smithson the next Kelly Clarkson? Maybe she’s the next Carly Hennessy.
2. It’s safe to say David Hernandez didn’t have many opportunities to sing “I Saw Her Standing There” at his old job.
1. The performance that will likely send Kristy Lee Cook packing: a countrified “Eight Days a Week” that was just … wrong.
