The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

3/12/08, 1:47 pm EST

It finally happened: frontrunner David Archuleta stumbled on American Idol! Oh, and the Lennon/McCartney songbook was released to the show, which led to Ryan Seacrest’s three-minute boil-down of the greatest songwriters in rock history and really dull interpretations of “In My Life” (Ramiele Malubay), “If I Fell” (Jason Castro) and “Across the Universe” (Michael Johns). The mighty Archuleta bumbled the words to “We Can Work It Out,” while David Cook impressed with a rocked-out “Eleanor Rigby.” But for the five best (and worst) moments from the first Big Twelve show on Idol’s impressive new set, watch these quick clips:

5. Chikezie’s brilliant take on “She’s a Woman” — which went from “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (Paula) to “completely drunk” (Simon) — gets Ryan galloping.

4. Brooke White’s respectful “Let it Be” easily won over Randy Jackson: “The dawg is a fan!”

3. Is Carly Smithson the next Kelly Clarkson? Maybe she’s the next Carly Hennessy.

2. It’s safe to say David Hernandez didn’t have many opportunities to sing “I Saw Her Standing There” at his old job.

1. The performance that will likely send Kristy Lee Cook packing: a countrified “Eight Days a Week” that was just … wrong.

I have watched Kristy Lee Cooke’s performance of “8 Days a Week” several times and I still don’t understand what was so horrible about it. Could someone please expain this to me? It has been universally panned. Chikeezie’s performance seemed brilliant the first time through, but that’s because it was different and caught the judges off guard, I don’t think he has a realistic chance to win. David Archuleta’s “stumbling” performance was a shocker indeed, but better for him to get a bad performance out of the way now then in crunch time. And I really do wish Josiah Leming was still here

Chikezie gave the most creative, entertaining performance in the history of AI.He went through almost every genre of American music and did it well. No matter who you’re favorite is,you should give props when it’s due-and Chikezie deserves them. All the other contestants should take a look at doing something clever and heartfelt like he did. You can’t out vocal Lennon/McCartney,they gave the definitive vocal already,so do it in a different, creative way-but make sure it works.

Anyone remember Clay Aiken messing up lyrics during season 2? I do. He forgot the words to “Vincent”, a song he wasn’t to familiar with. Things happen. David A. is an amazing talent. This coming from an older guy, not a screaming teenage girl.

“I can tell good talent when i hear it.”

can you now?

Cahuillagem | 3/13/2008, 5:23 pm EST

I LOVE David Cook. I love his performances, his voice. He’s got enough to go the distance.

dboizentoun | 3/13/2008, 3:14 pm EST

The gil sounded great… doing the critique is in need of better judgement…and this is coming from someone who is not a “country fanatic”- yet I can tell good talent when i hear it.

Kalie | 3/13/2008, 11:54 am EST

David A, is overated. He was so horriable that I couldn’t watch him. He forgot the lyrics! he was missing the beat, and worst of all, and this is the biggest sin a singer can commit, he doesn’t even know what he is singing about!

He has no heart for what he is singing, his smiles are fake and calculated. How can you show emotion when don’t know what the song means? You can’t. This is why he will eventually get voted off, or at least he should.

To suggest that you would like to see me, or any of the other doubters do this at 17 is beside the point. We are all critics, and we don’t like the boy. We see him as fake. So try not to be so upset that we don’t like who you have chosen to fallen in love with. Grow up.

There are a few talents in this compition, that know what they are singing, and convey the emotion of the song to the audience. David A. just isn’t able.

I’m actually surprised nobody is rooting for michael johns. when i first saw his audition i thought he was going to be great. he’s never impressed me yet and it’s so frustrating to see talent like that unshowcased. I think he will have one break through performance soon coz i actually think he’s better than what we are seeing.

and i think the judges were harsh on castro. i think his version of “if i fell” was great. not his best but then again, “halleluiah” was phenomenal. i think he and brooke are the only singers who sing with real raw passion. it’s almost creepy.

Sunny | 3/13/2008, 8:05 am EST

I think David A. has been completely overrated as far as long-term projection. Sure he might win this thing, but if the folks running this show think he’s the next boy-form of Hannah Montana they’re even more behind the times than I’ve thought. At least Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus has some spunk and personality. Poor David doesn’t seem to have much going for him in that regard. If anyone else had flubbed the lyrics that badly they’d have been gone. The pressure might be too much for the kid.

I just don’t dig David regarding entertainment abilities. He comes across without much personality, I don’t feel him connecting with his material.

Chickeze was surprisingly brilliant with one of the best performances on the show for quite a long while. I enjoyed David Cook, he actually has better vocals than Daughtry regarding the rock schtick. He’s a pleasant surprise as well.

My favorite, Jason Castro, with his natural and emotional song deliveries. He delivers believable performances that transmit the vibe he’s in this for the music.

Veggie | 3/12/2008, 10:55 pm EST

Everyone from time to time forgets the lyrics. It just happens sometimes. We aren’t robots. Hell, even the professionals forget the lyrics to the VERY OWN SONGS. He is still the best vocally and everyone is still rooting for him.

Ang | 3/12/2008, 10:47 pm EST

My favorite is David Cook! He always nails his performances week after week! He is a true star! As for David A, I am slightly board, always a little “pretty boyish”. As for his slip up, yes he is human, but, I just don’t think it would be fair to keep him going so strong, to mess up the words for such a compitition should be UNEXCEPTABLE in my opinion!

Melomania | 3/12/2008, 10:22 pm EST

David H and Kristy Cook both made me vomit…copiously. Cathy Smithson just made poor John roll over in his grave. Actually, the other two made John roll over as well, and killed Paul at that same time.

Accidental Tourist | 3/12/2008, 10:04 pm EST

The main and critical flaw with Ramiele is that she is a classic cipher. There’s nothing going on between her ears except perhaps shoes, makeup, hair style, and her child body and how sexy she must look in these clothes. This filipino is vacuous, insipid and shallow. And of course she has no clue, truly clueless. It will feel good to see her get voted off, life isn’t a fairy tale little girl.

duh | 3/12/2008, 9:05 pm EST

go ramielle!

Kizzate | 3/12/2008, 8:51 pm EST

Those of you who think that David jeopardized his chance to be the next American Idol can go find a busy freeway and walk straight into it. He made a mistake. Jesus. Like you haven’t made a mistake. If you are reading this in the hospital because you got run over by a car on the busy freeway that I told you to walk into, then you’ve made a bigger mistake than David A. =D

Nettie | 3/12/2008, 8:31 pm EST

Love David A … he’s amazing … i had a feeling he was going to try to do a more upbeat song since Simon told him not to be so depressing last week … he should have sang “Hey Jude” … he would have done it beautifully and brought the house down … don’t let your confidence be thrown David!!! America still loves you!!!

cha | 3/12/2008, 6:22 pm EST

I know Jason Castro and Michael Johs will make it like Daughtry. And of course David A. BUT i didn’t get it with Cook.

russ | 3/12/2008, 6:17 pm EST

My thinking is the judges and probably the producers have decided to turn against David A because they are afraid of this season turning into another Sanjaya circus. But one question, did anyone notice David C’s performance was flat in many places? Talk about “forced” as Simon decribed David A’s performance. The judges talk about “pitch” problems, how about just not hitting the note? I’ve picked David A. to at least come in as runner-up if not winning the whole thing. Heck, Simon didn’t care much for Taylor Hicks throughout even up to the end. I’ve watched since that year and if David A gets voted out early, I will not finish the season.

Melinda | 3/12/2008, 6:05 pm EST

To those knocking David Archuleta; He’s 17! Could you do better? So he’s human & admitted not knowing Beatle songs before singing. America will still love him & vote for this cute,humble,clean-cut sweetheart to win this season’s Idol.

Nuvi | 3/12/2008, 5:44 pm EST

David A forgot the lyrics, an absolute no-no even in Hollywood week. Having said that, he’s been great to this point. In general, I though many songs would have worked better than those chosen. Only Carly, Chikezee, Brook and David were entertaining with the winner a toss-up between Carly and David. Kristy, and/or David H needs to go.

Nickberry | 3/12/2008, 5:11 pm EST

I want to add that I think Chikezi is awesome. Twice he has stepped up and performed in a high energy and extraordinarily entertaining way.

David Cook’s voice really was made for his version of “Eleanor Rigby.” Made me fall in love with that song… of which I never was that fond even though I have been a Lennon/McCartney fan forever.

David A is still very talented | 3/12/2008, 5:04 pm EST

So the young man made a huge mistake, the fact of the matter he is still very marketable and extremely talented. I will pay money to go see such young talent. Will not pay money to see Chickezie, so he had one good song…big geal…still a BORE!

Remember Daughtry, not the American Idol but huge contract with label and now opening act for Bon Jovi…go figure…

I would like to see some of you here with your nasty comments about David Archuleta be in the spotlight to be perfect at 17…could not imagine it.

Go David you are still my american idol…

Nickberry | 3/12/2008, 5:04 pm EST

Kristy “horse gal” needs to go. She should never have made it to the top 12. She has NO personality and her moves on stage are pretty disturbing.

i love david he is human he had to make a mistake but i think that he is going to win american idol

Emma | 3/12/2008, 4:44 pm EST

I’ve been rooting for David Archuleta since day one! Just try to remember the lyrics next time okay? You can have one bad week but this was not the week to have it. David Cook and Chikezie had the stage. Chikezie was extremely impressive and I loved David Cook.

Yo | 3/12/2008, 4:26 pm EST

David Archuleta is still the favorite. Just look at all the press, that has to be huge pressure for someone in his position. He has a huge fan base and no one can deny he has a great voice and is incredibly talented. He just needs to get his self confidence back. There is no doubt he will recover and be great!!!

lotus | 3/12/2008, 4:25 pm EST

Oh be nice! Every performer trips up. You try it and maybe then you’ll have some compassion for a mistake like that.

Sheba | 3/12/2008, 4:17 pm EST

I’d like to see Carly, David C & Brooke in the top 3. I’m actually quite bored of David A., and after his perfeormance I was sitting there watching him with that stuck smile thinking that if this was a Hollywood flick, he’d be the psycho serial killer, lol! I wouldn’t be too unhappy to see a major upset with him beig booted out, because it really was a terrible performance from him. So yes, Syesha, David A or Kristy will go packing IMO
