Rock Reality Show Recap: “Gone Country” Season Finale Shocker

3/10/08, 11:10 am EST

Every Week on CMT’s new reality show Gone Country, a motley mix of Nashville misfits try to make it big on the Chesney tip. We’ll be watching (and chuckling):

Sixty Minutes of Kentucky-Fried Reality in Seven Sentences: After seven weeks of watching CMT, it’s the episode you’ve all been waiting for: the hour-long finale. Tonight, our seven contestants perform the songs they’ve been learning all season in front of a Nashville audience. We know going into the episode that Sisqo doesn’t win, given his hilariously brief reunion with Dru Hill last week. “I don’t want to lose, because I’ve never lost a competition in my life,” boasts frontrunner and series MVP Bobby Brown. Carnie Wilson kicks off the show, followed by Julio Iglesias Jr., who makes the ladies swoon. Maureen McCormick shakes off her paralyzing stage fright to sing her ode to her deceased mother. The crowd loves it, and Dee Snider predicts for the second time that McCormick will win this thing.

The Honky-Tonkin’ Highlights: Diana DeGarmo, who was criticized by Rich last episode for being “too Aguilera,” belts out a countrified version of her song, turning her into the favorite to win this thing. “That was frighteningly good,” Rich says. But DeGarmo has one more hill to climb: Mt. Bobby Brown. Despite a pre-performance diet of Grey Goose-on-the-rocks, Brown brings the house down with his rousing performance, reminding the viewers at home that before he became a walking punch line, he was once a talented performer. Before we find out who wins the battle of DeGarmo vs. Brown, we must an endure a Sisqo performance (complete with ridiculous dancing) and Dee Snider’s juvenile “Rock Out with Your Rooster Out,” which started off well but ended with him dropping an eff bomb and a middle finger on the conservative audience, thus killing his slim chances of winning.

The Grand Ol’ Finale: John Rich wrangles everybody back at his mansion to go over his grading criteria and ultimately pick the winner. And the winner of Gone Country, who will be given the opportunity to record a song with John Rich, is… Julio! What an upset! The man who got the least camera time, the least back story, slept through all the competitions and who admitted he had the worst shot of winning ends up winning, as Rich decides he wants to mine the lucrative “Latinos who buy country music” market. “I’m happy for him, but at the same time, I want to whoop his ass,” Brown says in closing, bidding goodbye to a competition he should have won.

DISAPOINTED | 3/10/2008, 3:00 pm EST

THIS SHOW WASNT THAT GOOD TO START WITH BUT AFTER IF WAS OVER I WAS JUST MAD AT MYSELF FOR EVEN WATCHING IT. IS JOHN RICH THAT STUPID?

Candace McDarment | 3/10/2008, 3:10 pm EST

“Latinos who buy country music” alright I love John Rich but come on folks, Julie could not sing country if his life depended on it. I believe Bobby Brown or even Carne Wilson out did Julio big time! I’m sorry and I may not be an expert but I would not buy the CD of John and Julio and others I know have said the same thing.

Born and raised on Country music it has succeeded well without the Latino’s buying country music. Now we caterer our country music as well. By the way I am not prejudice my beautiful granddaughter is half latino and I love her to death but I think I have an ear for music and Julio is definitely not COUNTRY!

Kadtad | 3/10/2008, 4:16 pm EST

Diana’s song will make top 20 country….just watch.

hicktowngirl | 3/10/2008, 5:54 pm EST

I was definitly surprised. I am not prejuduice. I’m sorry country people, there are a few Big & Rich songs that I like, but these days, you’ll hear songs that don’t really sound country to me. “Gone Country”, wrong title for the show, it should have been “People that want to be called Country but don’t have a clue”.

old timer | 3/10/2008, 5:55 pm EST

Julio was the last person I thought should win. Lets face it, John Rich saw the dollar signs and sold out. Diana, Bobby or Carnie should have won.

Audrey | 3/10/2008, 6:28 pm EST

This was prearranged without doubt. If John saw passion in Julio, I saw a different show. He slept through everything and was not at all interested and his song was pathetic. I saw one star only. A moving performance beautifully sung by a young lady with the most marvellous voice ever. Diana DeGarmo. Thankfully she never one as she would have been labelled with a shocking video. She has moved to Nashville and is writing her own music and I cannot wait to buy her next album.

Kim | 3/10/2008, 6:46 pm EST

Diana DeGarmo should have won. It’s probably better for her that she didn’t. She doesn’t need to be saddled with this show. Bottom line though is she out wrote, out performed and out sang everybody else. John Rich is nuts.

hickchick | 3/10/2008, 11:06 pm EST

What is making everyone so mad are two things: First, John going against his own criteria for being the winner… i.e. you have to go country, live it, breathe it and he’ll slap the crap outta anybody coming in there wanting to basically get a free ride and Second, Julio not even trying to go country and then getting the free ride. I agree it should have been Bobby and Diana was a good choice, too. I would have been happy with any of the others winning, all of whom were sincerely trying to go country with the exception of Julio.

What Happened?? | 3/10/2008, 11:21 pm EST

Isn’t John Rich the one who discovered/ helped deliver OUR Gretchen to the Country Market???!!!
How can he POSSIBLY be losing “It” like this??
I feel like the Butt of the Joke, for watching this whole thing… with all of the Potential in the group… (Especially Diana, who took the brutal beating for sounding “too POP” and then altered HER song, and didn’t sound anymore “POP” than Carrie Underwood!)
And No one would argue that Carrie is “Not Country Enough!!”
I definitely am CONFUSED, by the outcome of this “Competition”….
Criteria? Music, Writing, Performance, X-FACTOR????
Help me get into YOUR head John….
Because You are saying one thing, and choosing the OTHER….
So Sad…

love country | 3/10/2008, 11:44 pm EST

My foot wasn’t stomping,I wasn’t feeling the song Julio sang. He was the last person I would of voted on.
Let the people help you vote next time JR. Julio isn’t country just a guy with a voice. If picking a man for us women then pick one.

Gina | 3/11/2008, 12:37 am EST

I was very disappointed, I agree with everyone else when I say that Julio stunk, and as far as JR seeing dollar sings, I don’t even know how that could be possible with an Enrique sound alike! JR I definatly think you made a very bad decision, I would bet that we’ll never even hear the single on the radio, it was that ridiculios! Bobby and Carnie had it in my opinion!

michael | 3/11/2008, 7:30 am EST

I was at the Wildhorse the biggest applause was for Diana deGarmo she was the only one that got all the music execs and musicians, artists in the balcony to give a standing ovation.Julio got polite applause except for a few girls in the front row screaming. If you wanted to sell Country to the Latinos you got to go to the Latinos. Majority of your audience wasn’t Latino. Marketing 101 Duh!!Dumb Pick John.

Still in shock!!!!!!!! | 3/11/2008, 7:33 am EST

I was floored when Jphn picked Julio. He song was not country at all and he stated the girls went wild….YUCK! I am lost Bobby, Carnie, and Maureen where great! I didn’t think Diana’s song changed must but she has a wonderful voice. I was shocked with Sisco he has a good voice also. But Julio….Let’s see in the first show John stated he would love to have someone like Julio (latino) to come into the country world. Wow, John did you have him picked from the start.

Kenneth | 3/11/2008, 8:47 am EST

This finale was a complete and utter joke. The fact that John Rich expects county fans not to see through his sham is puzzling. Diana should have won if this was a real competition, or even Bobby or Carnie. Good luck getting those Latinos, Rich.

Harry Balls | 3/11/2008, 12:49 pm EST

What is this thing called Country Music……….Never heard of it

R U KIDDING ME!!!! | 3/11/2008, 2:10 pm EST

WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD PICK A PERSON WHO DOESN’T CARE A THING ABOUT COUNTRY MUSIC. JULIO WANTS TO BE FAMOUS LIKE HIS DAD AND BROTHER. HE DOESN’T HAVE THE HEART FOR COUNTRY MUSIC. JOHN RICH IS TRYING TO GET RICH OFF OF THE LATIN COMMUNITY BY DOING A SONG WITH JULIO. I AM SURE DIE HARD COUNTRY FANS WILL BE ABLE TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD MUSIC AND JULIO IGLESIAS JR’S MUSIC.

Bill | 3/11/2008, 2:49 pm EST

Wonder if John ever thought he would make this big a fool out of himself. Giving up your honesty and integrity is too big a price to pay for a few dollars. And a duet with Rich and Julio will earn very few dollars. Sorry John you blew it pard.

Melanie | 3/11/2008, 3:25 pm EST

I thought Bobby Brown did an amazing job…he shocked the heck out of me. Julio…not so much but then country music seems more about the dollars than quality. Maureen was the most country out of all of them and even DEE saw that.

LUVCOUNTRY | 3/11/2008, 7:24 pm EST

This show was the biggest disappointment of the season. From John Rich strutting around in his politically incorrect and inhumane fur coats to choosing the contestant least likely to ever be successful in country music. Like Disappointed, I am mad at myself for wasting my time watching it. LOSER show and we are the biggest losers for thinking it might be an interesting show!

Chris | 3/11/2008, 7:33 pm EST

Diana or Bobby should have won, hands down. Maureen also gave a really authentic performance, but she was never going to win. I think Diana will have success in country music regardless. John Rich is an asshole for being all hypocrital picking the weakest, least committed, least country-sounding singer.

The Biggest Losers | 3/12/2008, 2:42 am EST

“we are the biggest losers for thinking it might be an interesting show!”

No, there are many more substantial reasons why you are the biggest losers, such as having no hope or future. But admitting what you watch on TV makes it much easier to understand why you are The Biggest Losers.

TN girl | 3/12/2008, 6:48 pm EST

Hmm…Julio Iglesias Jr.? Country? Well, that’s a CD that I will definitely NOT buy. I’ve listened to a variety of music my entire life, but country has always been my favorite and I definitely do not see Julio making it in country music. Like many other posters, it bothered me that John Rich made such a big deal of “going country” and then ignoring everything that he had said to choose lazy Julio! The winner should have been- anyone but Julio! (I was rooting for Bobby or Carnie)

country fan | 3/26/2008, 10:12 am EST

I think Julio is a very talented signer & love him, but his song was not country at all. I was very surprised at him winning “Gone Country”, when his style was not country at all.

Sheila | 4/11/2008, 2:40 am EST

Diana Degarmo was definitely the best on Gone Country and should have won the show. Her song Right Back Where We Ended that she performed will definitely be a hit country song.

It has come out that Diana did sign a contract with John Rich’s production company and he is the producer for Right Back Where We Ended.

Diana has also officially moved to Nashville. She definitely is the winner of Gone Country.

Nancy | 4/12/2008, 7:54 pm EST

Loved the Gone Country show especially the finale. Diana DeGarmo was my favorite and should have won. Heard that she is recording a country/pop album in Nashville produced by John Rich.

Hope their is a Gone Country season 2 will definitely watch it.

Jason | 4/19/2008, 9:33 pm EST

Loved the whole Gone Country series on CMT. Diana DeGarmo was definitely my favorite and should have won the show. The song she performed Right Back Where We Ended was outstanding.

ChrisLedouxfan | 8/15/2008, 12:47 pm EST

I am VERY disappointed with the outcome of “Gone Country”. I enjoyed watching the show for various reasons. I enjoyed all of the episodes, even the finale, until John Rich’s decision was made. John Rich’s speech about his committment to country music impressed me, but then when he made his decision, I saw all of his devotion/philosophy in regards to country music translate into corporate dollar signs. It was clear to me when Julio was writing his song, and he said that he could never sing about certain topics (that were very country) he clearly showed that he had not an ounce of country music in him. In the end, I felt insulted by John Rich’s decision, because his decision went directly against his philosophy of country music, and what it stands for.

Anonymous | 8/28/2008, 8:22 am EST

sisqo should have won and plus he’s hot and sexy and damn can he dance!!

So RIGHT | 9/11/2008, 10:34 pm EST

I love your article…..my thoughts EXACTLY. I refuse to watch episode 2 because they were so STUPID to bypass Bobby Brown. I will always remember that as a huge moment in Country Music when Bobby sang his soul out in that song!

susan | 11/9/2008, 1:02 am EST

Diana Degarbo should have won this by a long shot. She is the crossover that Faith Hill was, she sounds like a Martina McBride, she is a Carrie Underwood. What was John Rich thinking – Julio Iglegsiosl. I as a die hard country fan absolutely loved her song. A teenage hearttrob, us county fans not about a “hearttrhob” Dian had a great song and I would certainly listen to her song more than the sappy Julio song. Give this girl the bresai sher deserves – she is wonderful and wil go far with coutnry mustic. A lot of top names have gone this route and I still love them all. John Rich wrong choice. I would listen to her before ever listening to Julio who is following in hes dad footprints which doesn’g turn a real turn country fan on.I love your songs John but you totally missed the mark on this one. Diana is what we want- trust the fans who should hav voted. She will go far if she is signed. I see another Carrie Underw00od w0k I also love and was the absolue right choice for american idol; Give Diana the chance to become the country artists she is destinied to be. She’s wonderfrul. Julio Iglesio – short tem teen fanatic

Windy7 | 1/31/2009, 2:20 pm EST

julio the beaner was a lightweight, was not serious the whole competition. Bobby Brown won that.. clearly. He could have used the boost and I wanted to hear his song. It was good. John Rich was preaching all this.. “Country is Serious Business, Soulful, real” etc etc. bs. bs.

Then he chooses Julio beaner because all the girls yelled and went crazy. Really. What a waste. Not to mention we are in season 3 with no music coming out. Where’s the music?

greg | 5/18/2009, 11:59 am EST

man, he couldn’t even do country music! john rich bad choice!
