Metallica’s Ulrich: New Album “Should Be Out in September”

3/10/08, 10:20 am EST

Metallica anticipates completing their new, Rick Rubin-produced album in six weeks with the goal of a September release, drummer Lars Ulrich said. “I like what I’ve heard so far. I’m not one of the great sellers of ‘the new record’s the best thing we’ve ever done and it shits all over the last record and it’s way heavier,’” Ulrich told the BBC6 Radio’s Bruce Dickinson. “I like it and I’m one of Metallica’s harshest critics.” Ulrich didn’t comment on whether the album will feature the fake song titles like “German Cow” and “Black Squirrel” that we reported last October.

From what I’ve heard of the latest album, it’s not half bad. I hope the completed album is not a total piece of garbage like the last one. Everything up to and including the Black album was terrific. That kind of music set the bar for metal. Load and Reload were different, but still respectable. I was raised on Metallica and have loved their music my whole life. I really hope that they can get back to their former glory with this album.

Has Megadeth Fan forgotton Megadeth’s lame attempt to go mainstream with their 1997 album Risk? With that being said, they have released some great albums in the 90’s while Metallica shot their “load” with the black album and did not put out anything great after that.

Oziel Solis | 8/3/2008, 9:55 pm EST

Metallica is and will be my favorite band even if they pack it up, which hope that they won’t soon. I’m looking foward for this new album. I always think to myself, how would they
sound if Cliff was still here. Long live Metallica.

To all the ex fans, I bet you will be the first ones in line to buy the CD! Metallica is still Metallica and always will be… Awsome!

I’m a 7-8 year Metallica fan and after hearing they’re coming out with a new album finally kills the boredom of new music like rap. Anyway about all those fans that say they are past Metallica fans, I am too. Most people who say they should like all Metallica songs don’t understand why the Metallica fans of the past like the past music. It’s because every song in their albums up to about the black album was different and you didn’t know if it was Metallica or Iron Maiden or even someone else, but in the past few albums, every song sounds almost the same. Thats the only reason i’m a past
Metallica fan and thats why most past Metallica fans like the music only up to about the Black album.

When I hear Metallica now I change the station, the old logo has changed, everything has changed and that new song had a weak riff, nothing compared to fight fire with fire and the like at least I don’t feel ashamed of calling myself a Megadeth fan.

UnlimitedMetallica | 5/31/2008, 5:30 pm EST

This is a comment directed towards ‘Master Chris’. Pull your sad, pathetic and patriotic head out of your ass before your bowels burst from holding a shit as big as your head in it. America is not the greatest country in the world. Compared to America, there are hardly any shows over-seas. The last time before July last year was the first time Metallica had performed a show of there own over here for years. There are about 25 shows a month over in America in one state. In Europe there are about 10, one for each country. So shut up moaning about them not playing enough in America. Think how I feel. I’ve never seen them as I couldn’t make it to Wembley Stadium and I was too young to go the time they played before that. Please, keep your views of America to yourself.

You haters of St. Anger sound like grumpy old men who despise all things new. Legendary bands always experiment with new sounds. The album was fast and aggressive, even if the snare drum is a bit annoying. Hats off the the innovators. And why is singing about inner anguish a bad thing?

squish | 5/16/2008, 12:56 pm EST

huge metallica fan here, and like any fan im always excited for the new albums coming out. St. Anger wasnt what i expected, but i enjoyed the album overall, there were some things i wasnt crazy about, but i found a lot of things that i did enjoy, as i did in all of their albums. they have changed their style of music in many ways, which im ashamed to say, has driven fans of music away from them. aint that the point of music? always trying something new, soemthing different? forgive me if im not mistaken…. but uh. isnt that what theyve ALWAYS done? im right. i know i am. im a musician myself and maybe that allows me to be more attentative to that sort of thing. the fact that theyve now supposedly infused their new techniques with classic metallica tuning, just makes me all the more intrigued. i cant wait to see what theyve come up with this time. everything is always something new, and im never opposed to new sounds. think of it this way. if you can find something you like, then its good enough to enjoy.

derek | 5/13/2008, 11:15 pm EST

this new album better be good.
It’s been a while since they’ve
released something good.

Derek | 5/13/2008, 10:53 pm EST

Metallica hasn’t put anything good
out since they quit the boose and
drugs so this new album better kick
ass!

i love Metallica. they are like gods. i love every sinle album. a word of advice: if you don’t like St. Anger, wath the documentary Some Kind of Monster. it really gives you a sense of appretiation for that entire album

Metallica is my favorite band, always has and always will be.. I believe theyre the greatest Metal band to ever pick up instrument. Everyone has their opinion, but if it’s negative you should keep it to yourself :D I Loved the 80’s albums, all of the 90’s and today. Load and ReLoad are two of my favorite albums to date.. I think if you can’t enjoy those classics you must be nuts. ‘Bleeding Me’ is an extrordinary example of the powerful jams on these 2 albums. Those albums helped me through a very tough time in my life. I have been caught under wheel’s roll for a very long time. Overcoming addiction cannot be described with words.. I never thought life could be so tough. Anyways, their first album was the greatest start they could’ve gotten to sail through a multitude of amazing releases to come, from their demos leading to Kill ‘em all, on up through to their most recent release of St. Anger. That CD has 11 f**king fantastic songs that I couldn’t put down once i got my hands on it. Before St. Anger I thought they were done releasing, then they surprised me! And now I am pleasantly surprised again. A new one! That news should make every Metallica fan jump for joy haha. St. Anger was another one of those albums I can’t pick out my favorite song because I’ve rocked them all to no end. I’ve seen the two live videos of two of their new songs that may be on the CD. All i can say is i cant f**king wait man, The song in which he says ‘death is not the end’ (which i wonder if they will call this song that) makes me go YES! this song is awesome lol. I know they will release yet another fantastic track list for this upcoming album. I could only hope to ever meet any of the band in person, especially my idol, James. This comment may be long but I had a few things to say :) Hope Metallica keeps rockin on. I will forever love Metallica.

BML | 5/8/2008, 7:08 pm EST

I just read through all of the comments on this page, and one person said “No one even mentioned “in justice for all” and you guys call yourself Metallica fans”. Well I think that guy Is not a Metallica fan because he can’t even spell the album name, that’s sad. Anyways, I think the new album will be something new and amazing and I can’t wait for the release. I don’t care if Metallica has burned any bridges in the past or put out an album that has not been a favorite, but that’s okay because no band on the face of this planet will ever touch the success that Metallica has had for like 25 years!!

Cold metal | 5/6/2008, 11:45 am EST

i like metallica’s album specially black album, i want metallica to play something unique modern metallic sounds for thier next album….. i dont like the sound of snare drum in st.anger….back to basic but modern type of sound… GodleZZ u fooks

Metallica is one of the greatest metal bands of all time. No matter what album they have released they have managed to bring something new to the sound and add to its overall musicianship. As for those who think that and justice for all was the last great metallica album FUCK YOU> Just because a band goes from pure thrash metal to a slower heavy metal doesnt mean that they’ve “Sold out” or “lost it”. They tried something new. And personally I think there best album was the Black Album, especially Enter Sandman. Nobody can truly say that when they hear that song they don’t star headbanging to the guitar and screaming the lyrics. Anyways, this new album sounds like it is going to be fucking awesome and I can’t waith for the tour. METALLICA RULES!

ANGRYARRON | 4/29/2008, 12:52 am EST

and a few songs here and there
still the best live band ive ever seen

JC | 4/23/2008, 11:15 pm EST

Metallica owes no-one, nuthin - period. Sadly, no other band has that magic “X” Factor that they do. I do worry that James may become a little “preachy” with his angels & crosses etc. Kinda don’t mesh too well with the Metalli-frankenstein. Could feel like a family member trying to flog you Amway. {{{quiver}}}

Met4life | 4/21/2008, 10:10 am EST

only about half of the people on this page are true metallica fans. Ive been a metallica fan for 7 years and im only 15 and i love alomost everything of what they have done. even if you dont like them you have to give them credit. because of all the risks they took to creat good music. Play with a symphony was a risky ass move but it payed off. i loved it and load and reload i loved just as well. i like some songs on st. anger but they kind of screwed up on that one but like i said they took a risk and this time it didnt pay off like the others. But the best part of metallica even if the risk was a total peice of shit they get right back up and try again and another thing i love about them is that they go from heavy metal to slow melo stuff and i love that about them. i like all types of music exept rap and punk rock. that shit sucks so bad. and i even like country but nothing will ever beat metallica and never will. best band of all time.

I have head-banged to Metallica since they were a no name band on a compilation record. I have rocked through all albums including Load and Reload. That’s right f**ckers, I am a true die-hard Metallica fan (minus the crap they pulled on Mustaine). But, I was truly disappointed with St. Anger. Pure crapola! They did have some good riffs, but overall, I have packed it up and stored into the attic. I think that they needed this crap to surface in order to get over themselves and get back to hard-rockin basics! Sometimes I think that James’ vocal lessons may have screwed his original rough style. Just to show some of you what happens when I expressed my concerns as a long term fan…I posted the following on Meetallica’s forum hoping for some good feedback and they deleted it!
“Man….I am a long term Metallica fan…..I even have the Metal Massacre album with all of the originals….I feel let down….Where did the boys start?? Germany? no… The great U.S. of A. ! I feel like I have been left behind since I live in America! What’s up? I have been a die hard fan since the beginning…yes I am 30+ and proud to show my kids what real heavy metal is about! But, for the life of me, I am starting to lose my faith in my boys! No brief touring dates in the U.S. for years!! While all of the other main 80’s 90’s and 00’s bands are rockin it up across America, I still have to watch the embarassing video of “Some kind of monster”…..I am sorry, but no band needs a freakin shrink! Just deal with the Bullsh*t and make great music like you always have. If the band is not getting along anymore, take a hiatus for a while and do separate projects or go to Amsterdam and get laid for a couple of years……come back and record a great reunion album!!

Don’t get me wrong…I am and will always be one of Metallica’s biggest fans, but I want them back….and most of you KNOW what I mean!! Even the band knows what I mean…..

And what about all of these concerts overseas!!! WTF…I feel betrayed when non-Americans (YES…Metallica needs to come back to the States!) get to hear new material before the band’s family (meaning the originals here in the U.S. who bought all of the albums before “One” was played on mainstream stations). I feel like a brother has left me and banned my family for a new piece of AS* somewhere else…..not right!!

I am still a fan, but my heart needs some revival!!!! Make this new album kickas* and back to your USA metal up your ASS roots!!!!!!

ROCK ON!!!!”

Orion | 4/4/2008, 9:51 am EST

Long-time Metallica fan here as well and can’t wait for their new album as usual but I’ve never understood “fans” who like the old Met but not the 90’s Met and “this is their last chance or I quit” attitude. Your either a fan or your not - period. True fans take the good with the bad. There’s never been a band that has existed for 20-30 years that didn’t produce a crappy album every now and then. Led Zep’s last 2-3 albums weren’t very good minus a handful of songs - same for the Stones, Sabbath, The Who, etc… When listening to St. Anger, take into consideration what they just went through as a band and of course it’s not going to be their best work but again, there are 2-3 great songs there. I agree that they’re at their best when playing live - that’s never changed since day one. That’s how they created their sound and how they built their true fan-base. None of them like to be in the studio but they certainly love touring and playing for their fans. Like they said back in the Cliff days - “we’ll make the kind of music that we like and if you don’t like it then fu** off!” That has never changed. For those “pre-Black album Met fans” - keep on living in the past cause’ if you don’t like what their doing today then fu** off! We don’t need you. The true Met fan will always enjoy their music no matter what.

TARANTULIS | 4/3/2008, 4:46 am EST

IN MY OPINION GUYS, METALLICA ARE G R E A T AND REALLY HAVE DONE PERFECT ALBUMS IN THE PAST BUT THEY ARE MORE SOMETHING LIKE A LIVE-BAND… THEY WERE BORN TO PERFORM LIVE, AND THEY HAVE GIVEN SOME OF THE MOST PERFECT CONCERTS EVER…

Anonymous | 3/26/2008, 7:06 am EST

Ive listened to metallica from day 1, and have seen the progression over the years and have been impressed with the quality until their last album. I didn’t even buy it I figured that I was done with anything else that was going to come out, im glad I was wrong. I have heard some of the new songs and they have the combined styles of ride the lightning and the black album. This is the Metallica we all know and are fans of, WELL DONE !

Ovl. | 3/22/2008, 1:05 am EST

Em theres one of the new songs on youtube guys.. just search ‘metallica new song’ on youtube.. then commend again..

I thought that the music was great but the lyrics not so good.. but then again its like in its early stages so that might change..

Tell me what you think..

jeremy swanner | 3/21/2008, 3:47 am EST

I dont care who u are Metallica is the best band in the world hands down. They have done it all. No one understands them like I do, thats why I think I am the only TRUE Metallica fan around, Because I love every album they have ever released. All u punks that diss metallica are stupid because u have no idea who they are and what they have done. They just try to do things differently than others!

Powerwulves | 3/17/2008, 10:17 pm EST

Jon L. | 3/16/2008, 1:08 am EST

I’m suprised to see that not everyones talking shit. There’s actually fans posting. I love how people bitch regardless of what they do. Talking about Metallica is like talking about politics. One thing people need to realize when they say, “they suck”, or “this album will suck”, is it’s all an opinion. I’m sure I’ll enjoy this album just like all the others.

MB | 3/12/2008, 9:59 am EST

I like everything Metallica does! Yes some of it may be questionable, but thats because there experimenting! Great bands do that! I feel they know what there doing with there next album coming out, after all the heat they got with St Anger! It will ROCK!

MR. G | 3/11/2008, 2:55 pm EST

the new album will be the best thing they’ve done in 17 years. Why? Rick Rubin. They got rid of the cancer that was Bob Rock. Plain and simple.

From an original Metallica fan: For those of you who think St. Anger had any redeeeming qualities, you are either insane or tone-deaf. One of the worst albums ever created, EVER! I still want my $16 dollars back. I used St. Anger as a skeet for my 12 gauge. I’ll be “borrowing” the new album off the internet when it comes out. Is Napster still around?

Sean | 3/10/2008, 9:03 pm EST

I’m confident that this new album will be better than St. Anger. It’s been five years since they released that horror show of an album. I can just say that they can write some amazing songs.

Also, you have to admit that Load had some good songs like King Nothing and Hero of the Day.

There better not be any backtalk about Reload. That album actually was pretty damn good. Garage Inc was good too though it was all covers.

Dukes | 3/10/2008, 9:01 pm EST

Yes maybe St Anger did not sound like the typical Matallica album.. But its Heavy its fast and was fucking aggressive “ That’s what real artists do, they have the balls to experiment
with new sounds and shit and don’t repeat them self’s … if they did not grow since 1981 did we want all records to sound like Kill em all???

Leper Messiah..

The thing that was so bad about St.Anger was that it was NOT a Metallica album…it had no melody and no solos…it was just noise… Im with you that their stuff in the 90’s wasnt too great..but I hope you are not including the Black album in that, because that was a masterpiece..lightning and puppets are still their best records though..

Remind me again what was so bad
about St. Anger? I’ve listened
to these guys since ‘The Four Horsemen’ days, and I actually really liked St. Anger. Anything was an improvement over the shite they put out from ‘91 to 2000. It was heavy, fast, in your face…granted, there were a couple gimmicky things like the shouting, and the snare was a little ‘out of tune’, but come on…

This album NEEDS to be good, if I’m going to call myself a Metallica fan again… you know, a Metallica fan with no disclaimers, such as “I love everything Metallica did up until Load”, or “I’m a fan of 80’s Metallica”. I want this new album to make me proud enough to call myself a Metallica fan and not have to qualify the statement. It doesn’t necessarily have to have the same sound as “And Justice For All”… I’ve accepted that we may never see that version of Metallica again, but if they pull another St. Anger on us I will have to completely erase the band from my mind. Any band that consistently insults their fan base like they did with St. Anger is too full of themselves to have fans.

Jonny M | 3/10/2008, 1:19 pm EST

Instead of buying their new album, just go back and play their first three again. The will never come close to being that good again.
