The New Issue of Rolling Stone: Barack Obama

3/5/08, 8:50 am EST

Illinois senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama graces the cover of the new issue of Rolling Stone, which hits newsstands today. Having galvanized an exciting new movement and shattered the conventions of typical beltway politics, Obama has sparked a social revolution the likes of which haven’t been seen since the 1960s. To read the complete cover story that delves deep inside the Obama camp, click here, and for Rolling Stone editor and publisher Jann S. Wenner’s endorsement of the candidate, click here. Oh for fuck’s sake. What happened to Rolling Stone being a music magazine??!!

Marc | 3/5/2008, 9:38 am EST

This cover is laughable.

yep... | 3/5/2008, 9:50 am EST

well, I like Obama, hope he beats out Clinton, who seems like a man in a mid life crisis to me…but yeah, i agree, rollingstone should stick to music…but RS has always been sorta political…so I’m not surprised…

Now, what if this was Hilary Clinton…i bet that would get more laughs than this.

mmw | 3/5/2008, 10:10 am EST

this is great news for all Republicans. Any dork that rolling stone endorses always loses to the right.

kcv | 3/5/2008, 10:35 am EST

if you morons look back in history there are many politically-oriented covers. obama is a great man, i hope he makes it to the top.

Haha | 3/5/2008, 10:48 am EST

Are they trying to make him look like a superhero or something? Geez he’s a politician not Jesus.

talkingtowalls | 3/5/2008, 10:53 am EST

rolling stone has always been a pop culture magazine; pop culture that is most often influenced by music, but culture nonetheless. hence the cover. like him or hate him, you have to admit that obama’s way of doing business has been shaking up the polls a bit, exciting people who felt outside the system, and this is a big election year. so of course a candidate is going to be on the cover.

Pork Chop | 3/5/2008, 10:56 am EST

I knew Obama was gonna be on the cover, nah nahnah nah nah. I am the best. I am the best. I am the best. Yayyyy!

mothballs | 3/5/2008, 11:45 am EST

The only thing missing is his halo!

At least you people didn’t airbrush an erection on him, like you did with Gore.

Yes | 3/5/2008, 12:21 pm EST

eddie wilson | 3/5/2008, 12:45 pm EST

I love how everybody preens and says “ooo, he’s a rock star”!

I don’t know why they always say that!
I can’t picture him with a guitar or behind a set of drums, can you?

And I don’t want a “rockstar” for a president.

I want someone who actually has accomplished something with her life and knows what the fuck she’s talking about! Go Hillary!

Z | 3/5/2008, 12:49 pm EST

Obama all the way.

Amazing cover.

dork | 3/5/2008, 12:50 pm EST

,,,i will vote for him (my first pick is hilary), but, does’nt this guy look like the dork that got beat up in grade school all the time?

whoops! | 3/5/2008, 1:25 pm EST

cartoonish

JackDVD78 | 3/5/2008, 1:38 pm EST

Obama is a good person but let’s facew it like Tina Fey said ” Bitch is the NEW Black!”

whatever | 3/5/2008, 2:34 pm EST

Everyone had to know that RS would endorse Obama. They’ve had that advertisment leading to his website on this site for months now. Never once did I see one for any other candidate. Anyway….I have little faith in any of the candidates, and further more, RS endorsing a candidate doesn’t make me like him less….or more.

Phil | 3/5/2008, 3:03 pm EST

With this pose and laughable “lightning effects,” I think it will only create an Obama backlash.

Do we really want Raiden from Mortal Kambat as the next president?

Meh | 3/5/2008, 3:10 pm EST

Way to sell out Rolling Stone. Stick to the music.

Jose | 3/5/2008, 3:35 pm EST

All the people who clamor about Hillary’s superior experience and foreign policy really highlight how much people fail to do the nitty-gritty research. Those that do realize that the relative silence on Obama’s side isn’t about anything other than his tact and manners.

If bitch is the new black, then good riddance. I’ve always been a red, white, and blue kind of guy.

Tom | 3/5/2008, 3:48 pm EST

The cover is laughable and aptly proves how truly disconnected RS has become. This endorsement, and the silly glowing messiah portrait on the cover will only reinforce the growing (and untrue) notion that Obama is style without substance. You’ve created a little billboard of lies that will be displayed in every suburban supermarket newsstand. Thanks for helping to kill the Obama momentum you hacks.

Dakota | 3/5/2008, 4:13 pm EST

Terrible, terrible picture. Cheesy and soft. You could learn a couple of things from Esquire.

Tom Larkin | 3/5/2008, 4:45 pm EST

This is so shameful on the part of Rolling Stone magazine. They make Obama look like a god while they make it seem that Clinton is dead, while infact they’re dead even. Endorse a candidate once the nominees are announced. Now stupid people who live by the magazine will vote for Obama.

k | 3/5/2008, 5:03 pm EST

So glad they endorsed him. Maybe that can combat the republican storm that endorses hilary. Ya Rupert Murdoch you piece of trash im lookin at you.

Jughead | 3/5/2008, 5:38 pm EST

Super Obama!

Strange senator from Illinois, who came to the US government with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal politicians. Fighting a never ending battle for Truth, Justice and the American way.

Super Obama to the rescue!

Johnny Kickass | 3/5/2008, 6:16 pm EST

Noooo!!!

Barack is in cahoots with the Masons and the Queen of England to put the West and East coast of the USA into a Super-Region with Canada, under the jurisdiction of the Queen of England under a One World Government (first got off the ground by Jimmy Carter), so her family of half-lizard people from outer space can have unhinged access to the world’s money supply, which they manipulate with the principles of electric current!

Duh! Wake up America! The Queen is at your doorstep, and her name is Barack Obama!

Barack Obama | 3/5/2008, 6:32 pm EST

This is wack.

whiteyfresh | 3/5/2008, 7:19 pm EST

Obviously no one here bashing RS has ever heard of one of the greatest political journalists out there, Matt Taibbi.

Alwaystriumph | 3/5/2008, 8:44 pm EST

Clinton is dead. She was dead heading into the Tuesday primaries and she pulled the Republican slime factory tactics, the photo of Obama in Africa, the scare tactic “your kids are sleeping and a call is made to the white house” commercial, telling people in Ohio that he supports NAFTA (which she has continually done). She is slime and runs a slimy campaign. I don’t always agree what RS endorses or says but this time I do and they got it right.

Anonymous | 3/5/2008, 9:54 pm EST

I still proudly own Rolling Stone Issue #1, which I bought as a teenager. Back then, we thought we REALLY could change the world (and we did).

Today, Barack Obama talks about change but offers nothing substantial as to what he will do.

And Hillary? Her ranting about experience fails to take into consideration the last time she was a resident of the White House, she was the spouse of the President. That isn’t the experience I’m looking for when I vote.

John McCain’s experience IS.

Ray | 3/5/2008, 9:58 pm EST

To whiteyfresh:

Mike Taibbi is nothing more than a foul-mouthed hack with an agenda.

Jake | 3/6/2008, 12:07 am EST

Dear Anonymous,

If you are proud of being part of the generation that “changed the world,” then it is an absolute shame that you support John McCain.

sy | 3/6/2008, 12:42 am EST

saturday night live

Ray | 3/6/2008, 8:24 am EST

Jake,

I am not sure why my previous post was listed as anonymous, but let me address your comment.

I am not ashamed to say I support Senator McCain. To be sure, there are several issues he favors that I completely disagree with.

That said, this is a country where each one of us is entitled to an opinion, regardless of what others think or say. My concern is experience, and there can be little argument that McCain has more than both Clinton and Obama.

Much like you, I was once a liberal, but I grew up and recognized entitlements and government handouts are not the answer. I eventually recognized (and embraced) the notion that we shouldn’t elect leaders just because they come from a certain party. We must learn to look beyond party affiliation.

And to be honest, it saddens me that in a country of over 300 million people, we still are given the choice of voting for candidates from two political parties. But since we are stuck in that archaic system, I cannot in good conscience, vote for Obama or Clinton. It still comes down to the lesser of two evils, and THAT is what is wrong with America.

re: Ray | 3/6/2008, 11:39 am EST

I don’t believe your being honest in your commentary.

Ohio and Texas | 3/6/2008, 2:09 pm EST

Alwaystriumph | 3/5/2008, 8:44 pm EST

“Clinton is dead.”

That’s news to us. And the people on here are obviously just as capable of “slimy political tactics” by constanty trying to pass off half-truths and out and out lies for the truth. The only difference is they’re held accountable, and you’re able to crawl back under a rock hiding behind hundreds of screen name aliases.

rcalore | 3/6/2008, 6:12 pm EST

can anyone explain to me what the phrase “Bitch is the new black” means?

Clinton History | 3/8/2008, 1:32 am EST

If she did not know Bill was sleeping with, chasing and raping other women then how in the hell will she hear the telephone at 3AM.

The Clinton history that is all I have say – think about it.

McCain - Old | 3/8/2008, 1:39 am EST

Both Clinton and McCain are old school polticians one is a warmonger, the other is for sale to the highest bidder. Time to break from tradition.

Besides that John McCain is not the best person to answer the telephone at 3AM, by the time McCain puts in his teeth, hearing aid, and goes to the bathroom we will be done for.

Change | 3/8/2008, 1:51 am EST

Change number one – Refuse to use fear, race, gender, religion, political party, and such to divide and conquer.
Change number two – Eliminate the influence of corporate and lobbist dominated politics.
Change number three – Stimulate job growth in America by eliminating tax breaks to corporations that send jobs overseas and give them to corporations that creat them here.
Change number four – Help to create and implement real heathcare reform and make affordable healthcare available to all Americans.
Number five – well you get the point

Real Change with substance!

Obama 2008!

Hey KCV--Obama a a great man? | 3/12/2008, 12:10 pm EST

What is great about him? Not his political record in Chi-town, not his inability to hit the correct vote button, not his business or military experience, not his speech writing (ask the Mass Gov.), not his foreign policy experience. Maybe he isn’t a bad guy, but “great”–that’s a stretch.

Butterfly3344 | 3/12/2008, 2:16 pm EST

I am always amazed that people do not investigate who they are voting for. Read his bills that he authored with Republicans and you will see he is about COMMON SENSE in government. Hillary is about HILLARY oh and the rich people that pay her.

Pete | 3/12/2008, 2:18 pm EST

Anyone who’s watched Bam Bam during his career in Illinois knows full well the man didn’t change a thing anything than his address.

He supports patronage politics and the old school democratic machine which is tearing Illinois apart.

When thinking about Rezko, think about the fact that Bam endorsed Blago – another IL pol that has accomplished nothing.

Also keep in mind that Bam endorsed one of the most corrupt and useless men for Cook County President.

I wouldn’t call Bam an “empty suit” if only since he, and his suit, are full of sh*t.

The fact that RS is endorsing him just goes to show they know even less about the nuances of politics than they do about music.

Anyone who can show his experience in generating substantive change is more than welcome to give it a shot. But, I’d recommend anyone waiting for such not hold their breath.

Rainmaker | 3/12/2008, 2:28 pm EST

You forgot his light sabre.

hermie | 3/12/2008, 2:44 pm EST

Obama has been one of the most partisan Dems in the Senate. He tried to filibuster Alito with a weak reason that he wondered if Alito was ’sensitive’ enough to minorities? Of course ’sensitive; means ‘racist’ in the Dem vocabulary.

Also, Obama showed NOTHING when he was a state Senator. In a state where there is corruption at all levels, Obama simply went along; evidence he was neither a ‘reformer’ or a ‘leader’. He supported crooked machine pols and endorsed Todd Stoger for his father’s seat as Cook County Chairman, despite having absolutely no qualifications other than his name and party affiliation. Stroger then laid off a number of county workers and hired members of his family at top jobs for enormous salaries.

Obama also showed no interest in reforming the state pension system, which has helped cripple Illinois economy and threatens to drive business and people out of the state because they can’t afford the extreme raises in taxes that Obama helped shepard through the Statehouse.

Obama has never had to work for any of his success, he had the patronage of a number of connected politicians who got Obama elected in safe districts and his connections to shady fundraisers like Rezko.

Obama is an empty suit…but he sure does talk nice so women used to watching Oprah can swoon and publications like RS can write about his ‘rock stardom’.

SmarterThanYou | 3/12/2008, 2:44 pm EST

Amazing how many right-wing nutjobs are posting here. If nothing else, Obama brings some goddamn BRAINS to the White House. As for McCain’s qualifications and experience, I’m not clear how sitting in a bamboo box for 5 years counts as good foreign policy experience.

Mr G | 3/12/2008, 2:50 pm EST

As CNN’s John King aptly demonstrated last night on the magic wall: Clinton needs to win basically all the remaining states by around 60-40 margins, including the ’re-do’s’, to get ahead of Obama.
Just give up Hillary. Your hangin around like a dead smell.

Easydoesit | 3/12/2008, 2:55 pm EST

Hey, SmarterThanYou, McCain spending 1 minute in Nam makes him more a man than you will ever achieve in your poor pathetic life.

You’d never tell a Vet that too his face.

My_cold_dead_hands | 3/12/2008, 2:58 pm EST

Obama = No Change
Clinton = No Change
McCain = No Change

Nothing new just good old boy back room dealing politics as usual.

Ron Paul = Change

Sure he doesn’t stand a chance but he was truly the only one o the candidates that really cared about America and not himself, and his friends (read; contributors).

I’m still voting for him I don’t like any of the other candidates running and seriously doubt any of them will change America for the better.

What would HST do?

P.S. I do not believe 9/11 was an inside job nor any other crap that seems to come out of the public perception’s of Ron Paul supporters that the media loved to show. I’m just a normal working class stiff that own a few guns, votes, and follows the laws of our country. I support the troops but want them home defending our borders not some rich bastards oil interests overseas.

OK I’m off my soapbox now.

Jim | 3/12/2008, 2:59 pm EST

I think Liberals will change their toon when we all have to pay for all the promises he is making.

MC | 3/12/2008, 3:04 pm EST

I’ve given money to Obama, and even volunteer for his campaign any chance I get.

But….the cover is a bit much.

He’s not Jesus. And I wish the liberals, who are mostly agnostic or atheist, would stay away from the messianic allusion, especially since they don’t believe in the Messiah in the first place.

Holy Farker | 3/12/2008, 3:15 pm EST

I am not sure if I am buying the message from the right that Obama lacks the experience.

Remember, these are the people who based their decision to vote for Bush because they wanted to have a beer with the guy.

Gritz | 3/12/2008, 3:15 pm EST

Not sure about the rape charge, but I do recall a unsolicited advance on a lady called Kathrine Wiley. I am also not sure what he tried with Paula Jones either.
That being said, I think the last two Presidents have brought negative stigmas to the office. The American people are tired of the ol’e regime. Most would vote for Larry the Cable guy if he could getter done.

RipVonBongstein | 3/12/2008, 3:21 pm EST

Oh My | 3/12/2008, 3:22 pm EST

Agreed, I thought RS was about music… Second, what has Obama done? What his record? He’s the face of change? What change? None, that’s the answer; so, he’s a likeable guy, big deal…ever hear him speak of his policies? SC-AR-Y… he tells people what they’d like to hear, as opposed to what they need to hear..i.e. the truth, reality

mordantkitten | 3/12/2008, 3:28 pm EST

Yeah, but so’s Hillary, dude. Be fair.

While I certainly do appreciate Obama’s message of hope, and the way he’s raised a large percentage of his campaign funds, I’ll probably end up voting for McCain. The primary reason for that is I think McCain is the only one of the three who will get serious about trying to clean up the godawful financial mess our federal government is in.

Jason | 3/12/2008, 3:51 pm EST

A lot of people here not too familiar with Rolling Stone. It has been an important voice in U.S. Presidential politics for decades. I suggest you read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail. Rolling Stone has produced some of the most insightful and straight forward political reporting over the last 40 years. I don’t think they’ve ever endorsed a republican, but I don’t think RS’s position on the political spectrum has ever been questioned.

I’m sure HST would love to be around to expose HRC and McCain as the frauds they are.

Oh Please | 3/12/2008, 4:19 pm EST

In response to Duhh,

It really is no suprise Rolling Stone endorsed Obama …the only thing suprising is it took them so long to get it done. (probably bc they had to waste so much time in photoshop making the man look like he just ascended from heaven, oh please). I’ve been a dedicated subscriber to that magazine since I was 12 then a few years ago I grew up and got sick of the constant one sided view when it came to there political articles (which is not why I ordered the mag in the first place …stick to the music) I’ve since canceled that subscripition and there still sends me there pathedic liberal rag and so I saw this cover. They’re just as bad as the New York times..so bad infact they can’t give their publication away. So yes I will go back to watching Fox News…because that’s truly the only place where I can get ANOTHER point of view.

Ugh | 3/12/2008, 4:26 pm EST

Wow.

All this ramble about his lack of experience coming from people who clearly haven’t looked at his state senate voting record, or his voting record in the U.S. Senate…

Actually, it scares the bejesus out of me that most people don’t care about a candidate’s position on the issues either way, but rather, if he “sounds and looks good” on your big-ass TV.

@Jim: It’s spelled ‘tune’ (like the music). Ironic, right?

Mr. Wonder | 3/12/2008, 5:19 pm EST

Barack is different. He is for change……so is every other candidate. I wonder how long he can keep repeating the change mantra.

I wonder if anyone ever told him that change will happen no matter what. Life is about change. Nothing stays the same.

I can’t believe people want to elect this guy because he offers change. I can do the same, VOTE FOR ME!

Barack on the cover is a little too far. Why can’t it just be about the music.

Captain Obvious | 3/12/2008, 5:39 pm EST
