The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

3/5/08, 3:24 pm EST

It was supposed to be Eighties week on American Idol, but the eight remaining semifinalist guys embraced the night’s other theme: embarrassment. Luke Menard sang a wussy “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” David Hernandez recalled the dreadful day he had “a pea-sized booger” in his nose and even wunderkind David Archuleta had to swallow his pride as Simon Cowell called his Phil Collins cover “gloomy.” For the night’s few bright spots (and some more humiliation), check out these quick clips:

5. David Cook dips into the hipster playbook for what Randy calls “an emo” version of Lionel Richie’s “Hello.”

4. For a few glorious seconds, Danny Noreiga believed he was Rihanna.

3. Everyone on earth with a copy of The Breakfast Club soundtrack knows who sings “Don’t You Forget About Me.” For shame, Randy.

2. Jason Castro’s take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” was so excellent, Jeff Buckley’s version of the song rocketed to Number Five on iTunes’ chart overnight.

1. Paula Abdul … leaves them speechless.

Paula is essential to AI’s chemistry. The show wouldn’t last without her.

Anyone who get philosphical about American Idol should be put into a baboon cage until they’re done getting a good hot hard workout!

Actually I totally disagree with you Babs. I find Simon the best part of AI: The funniest, erudite, honest and above all entertaining. MOst of the women singers were insipid and uninspiring. Thank you Simon for having the courage to speak the truth, even tho the “Babs” of world chafe at the bit.

bye bye. nice chatting with you all.

Since when did the words Idol and esential go together.

Shit.

Babs | 3/5/2008, 6:45 pm EST

I don’t know why they don’t replace Paula, the whole Paula Simon thing is really stupid and is ruining the show, we want to watch the singers not Paula at least Simon does try and tell the truth. Granted sometimes he could be a little kinder but he is not gushy and phony get rid of Paula whatever she is on or drinks is not fun to watch.

Regarding Paula leaves him speechless. It looked like Paula was suffering from some of her old habits last night. Simon getting her back into her seat, and her little rant at the end of the show. Meanwhile have you noticed that Paula does not look at or speak directly to Simon she actually swings in her chair away from him. I know this is politically or at least drug incorrect but the show is better when she’s high.
