It was supposed to be Eighties week on American Idol, but the eight remaining semifinalist guys embraced the night’s other theme: embarrassment. Luke Menard sang a wussy “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” David Hernandez recalled the dreadful day he had “a pea-sized booger” in his nose and even wunderkind David Archuleta had to swallow his pride as Simon Cowell called his Phil Collins cover “gloomy.” For the night’s few bright spots (and some more humiliation), check out these quick clips:
5. David Cook dips into the hipster playbook for what Randy calls “an emo” version of Lionel Richie’s “Hello.”
4. For a few glorious seconds, Danny Noreiga believed he was Rihanna.
3. Everyone on earth with a copy of The Breakfast Club soundtrack knows who sings “Don’t You Forget About Me.” For shame, Randy.
2. Jason Castro’s take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” was so excellent, Jeff Buckley’s version of the song rocketed to Number Five on iTunes’ chart overnight.
1. Paula Abdul … leaves them speechless.
