News Ticker: Facebook, Pavement, Phish

3/5/08, 3:08 pm EST

  • Despite recently joining forces with iTunes, Facebook is reportedly reaching out to the major record labels about possibly starting its own music download service. MySpace is also in talks with the majors to set up a rival service. In further bad news for iTunes, Warner Music Group has struck a deal with 7digital to allow the digital music service to offer DRM-free files.
  • Entertainment Weekly reports that Pavement might possibly reunite in 2009 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of their record label Matador. While Stephen Malkmus, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg and Mark Ibold tell the magazine a reunion is feasible, nothing is confirmed.
  • More “possibly maybe” reunion news: Phish will be given a lifetime achievement award at this year’s Jammy Awards, though there are no plans for the band, which has been on hiatus since 2004, to perform.
  • Korn’s Munky will release an album with his side project Fear and the Nervous System on August 8th.

Phish gets a Lifetime Achievement Award? For what? Trying to recreate the Grateful Dead? All the Dead ever did was spend endless decades of…wait, never mind, the Dead didn’t do anything either.

I think a Pavement reunion would be lovely.
I kind of don’t think they should make another album, because most “renunion” albums are pretty bad (Smashing Pumpkins for example).
But then again farewell tours are all kind of bad as well…oh well.
Double whammy I guess.
