Nine Inch Nails Surprise Fans by Web-Releasing New “Ghosts” Album

3/3/08, 8:41 am EST

Nine Inch Nails have unleashed a new, thirty-six-song instrumental album called Ghosts I-IV, which is available for download right now. The album, recorded over a ten-week stretch last fall, is what Trent Reznor calls “a soundtrack for daydreams.” “I’ve been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn’t have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective — dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture,” Reznor said on the Ghosts Web site. “I’m very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference.” Reznor parted ways with his Interscope in late 2007.

Much like Radiohead’s novel In Rainbows sales scheme, Ghosts I-IV is available in a multitude of different formats at different costs. For free, people who visit the Ghosts site can download nine of the thirty-six tracks (Ghosts I) as 320kbps DRM-free MP3s, as well as a forty-page PDF file full of digital extras. For five dollars, you can download all thirty-six tracks, either from the site or from the Amazon MP3 store. There are also $10 (for two CDs), $75 (hardcover book, 2 CDs, DVD) and $300 (limited edition of 2,500 set signed and numbered by Reznor) options. Ghosts I-IV’s arrival follows a cryptic post made by Reznor on February 17th on the NIN Web site that hinted that there would be a major announcement in “two weeks.”

Stuporfly | 3/3/2008, 12:50 pm EST

How much is the format that makes Trent Reznor relevant again?

M. | 3/3/2008, 1:01 pm EST

It’d be interesting to see how this turns out.

Clearside | 3/3/2008, 1:07 pm EST

Stuporfly, your stupid. TR is the most relevent person in the game today. NIN has a career that is longer than most artists have. Why am i here? Speaking of relevence Rolling stone is a fucking joke filled with ads and no talent whores. They value fame and looks not quality of music! Get a life Stuporfly and you to rolling stone, Your mag sucks!

Clearside,

“Stuporfly, your stupid.”

Well played, sir or madam.

A 36 song instrumental album? Trent Reznor ain’t kidding when he says that it’s “a soundtrack for daydreams.” It’ll probably put any one listening to sleep.

I agree with clearside (despite the vocabulary issues). The album is amazing. The distribution (despite the website crash) finally seems right. RS does blow hard though. At least you can always count on getting any Fergie or pop music news so you know what you’re talking about when the 30th blonde idiot you’ve dated this month starts telling you about her favorite music.

when will they learn | 3/3/2008, 2:08 pm EST

Is it just me or shouldn’t the trolls have learned to use better grammar by now when insulting someones intelligence? I cannot count the number of times I see the following dialog:

troll: your stupid!
trolls target: Ha. You’re a hypocrite.

Please please PLEASE try to make an effort in your insults. It makes it too easy to retort and I’m getting bored. At least make us work for it before you slink away back under your bridge.

Download doesn't work | 3/3/2008, 2:48 pm EST

Just paid 10$ for the album (+13$ S/H) and exceeded the download attemps… it all broke down at 10Mgs or less (total of 273Megs) I guess there’s too many users.

It would have been nice for them to do some proper testing in order to avoid this situation…

I is download the album and it be very good. I have no trouble downloading and all the music is amazing. Trent Razor is a genus and once again he show us how much of the talent he be has.

einstein | 3/3/2008, 2:58 pm EST

u would think they’d line up the bandwidth to handle the expected increase in site traffic so they don’t tick off their fans with a painfully slow site. it ain’t rocket science.

john | 3/3/2008, 3:10 pm EST

the new album is amazing. it’s the best thing he’s released in a LONG time.
i must say i’m pleasantly surprised cuz i didn’t think NIN would ever be good again.
it’s his most industrial album in a while, but it’s also very organic and dreamy.
very artistic and interesting.

not everyone is going to like it. that’s a fact.

Trent Razor | 3/3/2008, 4:30 pm EST

Hey Apple Sauce,

Trent Razor? How much talent “he be has”?!

You are a fucking retard.

Don'tbuyfromNIN,Amazonbetter | 3/3/2008, 6:04 pm EST

The download from NIN website is absolutely dysfunctional. Save yourself $5 and a ton of hassle, get it off of Amazon.com.

Great album though!

AMAZING ALBUM. I just hope they can work out all the issues on the site, i’ve waited on downloading anything yet because i actaully want the album and stuff. Maybe i’ll wait until the cd gets released.

AK 47 | 3/3/2008, 9:54 pm EST

Wow, NIN fans really are fucking idiots, aren’t they?

Anonymous | 3/4/2008, 5:32 pm EST

I don’t think Trent Reznor’s “relevance” is an issue. If the man’s making good music, I don’t care how many magazine covers he’s on. This is one of the most interesting, enjoyable listens I’ve had in a long time.

Barange | 3/4/2008, 7:48 pm EST

Great album!!!

Nathan L. | 3/6/2008, 1:20 am EST

I like it so far. Has to grow on me. Generally thought the tracks needed some polish, but once I stop dissecting and shift my attention away from the music, I start enjoying it. some seem to be better than others though.
I think its cool that popular artists are making music like this. Too bad for the ppl who are bored by anything not designed for the ADHD crowd, the 3 minute songs and someone shouting constantly. Not that I mind when trent does that, but this music has its place. Gotta respect the man for trying something like this. He’s not fishing for good reviews and platinum records, thats for sure, and awesome.

‘Trent Reznor sucks!!!’

Do you think he REALLY gives a shit what a few fat and sweaty wannabe goth punks think about him? Hell no, he laughs on his way to the bank.

‘Year Zero was a joke!!!’ Yeah, but it still made him money.

The thing is this, and put quite simply:

Trent Reznor tells you what is relevent, not the other way around. If he starts wearing his underwear on his head, inside out; then by god that’s relevent. And bet your sweet ass that ten zillion zealots will follow suit.

All you haters? Do a better job, and have a twenty year music career. Otherwise, shut up.

total_nonpunter | 3/6/2008, 5:08 pm EST

This album is one of the best surprises to come out of the music world in a long time. Best Nails album since Fragile, or Spiral? Kudos to Trent – this is the type of album I’ve been waiting to hear out of him for over a decade.

John | 3/7/2008, 4:49 pm EST

I’m not even a NIN fan but I started with the 9 free songs then the next day bought the rest. I love it all!

Colin | 3/7/2008, 6:01 pm EST

I agree that this is one of the most astonishing collections of musical ideas that I have heard in a long time. I am absolutely addicted to GHOSTS.

Pravin | 3/15/2008, 11:14 am EST

I don’t think is good to blame any Trent album,he’s a genius, that’s obvious, and very unselfish in my opinion…despite any negative comments. He even has give us people an idea to have a band without really having a record company. He’s the man.
