Last night American Idol combined a Seventies theme with the always uninformative “getting to know the contestants” week, so we learned Michael Johns enjoys tennis and Jason Castro is always stoned. Onetime gymnast David Hernandez’s “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” was hot, a cappella superstar Luke Menard’s “Killer Queen” was not, and former punk Danny Noriega covered Karen Carpenter. Here are the show’s best moments in five quick clips:
5. Robbie Carrico’s contention that he’s a “real” rocker is not aided by this performance of Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded,” his wallet chain or rumors that his golden mane is a wig.
4. If k.d. lang and Lance Bass had a child who was a big fan of Night at the Roxbury and crooned to guests as they checked into the Excalibur … Jason Yeager.
3. Chikezie rebounds from last week’s orange-suit disaster by hiring Kanye West’s stylist from 2004, nailing his Donny Hathaway song and sassing Simon Cowell.
2. David Cook unleashes a few licks on Free’s “All Right Now.” Somewhere Robbie Carrico is gently weeping into his wig.
1. David Archuleta performs a breathtaking version of John Lennon’s “Imagine” that has his parents picturing their new yacht and Idol producers visualizing a ratings bonanza.
