The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

2/27/08, 1:33 pm EST

Last night American Idol combined a Seventies theme with the always uninformative “getting to know the contestants” week, so we learned Michael Johns enjoys tennis and Jason Castro is always stoned. Onetime gymnast David Hernandez’s “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” was hot, a cappella superstar Luke Menard’s “Killer Queen” was not, and former punk Danny Noriega covered Karen Carpenter. Here are the show’s best moments in five quick clips:

5. Robbie Carrico’s contention that he’s a “real” rocker is not aided by this performance of Foreigner’s “Hot Blooded,” his wallet chain or rumors that his golden mane is a wig.

4. If k.d. lang and Lance Bass had a child who was a big fan of Night at the Roxbury and crooned to guests as they checked into the Excalibur … Jason Yeager.

3. Chikezie rebounds from last week’s orange-suit disaster by hiring Kanye West’s stylist from 2004, nailing his Donny Hathaway song and sassing Simon Cowell.

2. David Cook unleashes a few licks on Free’s “All Right Now.” Somewhere Robbie Carrico is gently weeping into his wig.

1. David Archuleta performs a breathtaking version of John Lennon’s “Imagine” that has his parents picturing their new yacht and Idol producers visualizing a ratings bonanza.

“Jason Castro is always stoned” should be “Jason Castro gives us the same feeling as smokin’ a doobie”

Or that Jason Castro is the real thing…a good singer who makes a song different. David A took a Liverpool song and made it Hollywood. Aren’t there laws against that?

Cassie | 2/27/2008, 9:24 pm EST

Ummm Jason Castro Stoned? No. Stop putting down other people.

I actually like the dreads kid. He seems like less of a put-on Hollywood attention hound than all the others. He doesn’t seemed stoned either, he’s just laid back and easy going.

Wow! David was a show stopper and he is a level above any other singer thus far in this competition.

Jason Castro is awesome. He is so cute & has a good voice & laid back personality. He’s fun to watch.

notheretogossip | 2/28/2008, 12:19 pm EST

Jason Castro does not smoke weed. Stop making up judgmental crap.

Jason Castro is fabulous. Love his voice. He’s the reason I watch. Sorry but David A is a bit cheesy for my taste.

Love Jason! Very refreshing for AI. I hope, he will get contract

32 y/o married mother of two…has serious crush on Jason. Just because he has dreads and sings reggae-ish songs doesn’t mean he’s always high…maybe just part of the time. LOL…no, I doubt he’s smoking on A.I. and that comment was unfounded and unnecessary. You’re just jealous…just like my husband.

It will be interesting to see which Lennon/McCartney songs the remaining 12 contestant chose this coming week. Am looking forward to that. Still favor young Archuleta to take it all. He does have to lighten up a bit, however, and chose a nice upbeat tune.

Stop profiling the guy just because he has dreads. Jason Castro is awesome – an excellent singer, a refreshing change for AI, and not to mention extremely good looking!! And if he smokes, so what? It’s his business.

Jojoba | 3/10/2008, 8:51 pm EST

Unlike the majority of AI contestants who feel stage-managed to within an inch of their life and self-congratulatory regarding their talent, Jason Castro appears genuinely guileless, likeable and just happy to be playing music. He’s the only one who looks like they might be fun to hang out with…this is a wicked powerful force for many viewers. And it seems his mega hotness is appealing to women both young and mature.

Jason Castro is amazing! Not only does he come across as “real”, but he’s got an amazing voice and wonderful guitar skills. I’m married and a mother and I agree that he’s in touch with fans of all ages young and mature. I hope he makes it to the end.

gojasonidolwfuture | 4/18/2008, 12:38 am EST
