Is Perez Hilton the Next Clive Davis?

2/26/08, 5:37 pm EST

Perez Hilton: Gossipmonger, MS-Painter, Record Label CEO? That’s the rumor of the day, according to the New York Times, which writes that Hilton, “the Queen of All Media,” is in talks with Warner Music Group to expand his kingdom from the blog world to the music industry. Warner seems willing to find out if Hilton’s ear for undiscovered acts is as strong as his ear for gossip, with the amount of $100,000 as an advance on the against the fifty-percent profits he’d get for finding, signing and promoting new acts. Hilton has shown a proclivity for up-and-coming music in the past, praising the Scissor Sisters and Amy Winehouse early on and familiarizing his readers with then-lesser-known acts like Mika and The Gossip. Can he be the industry’s savior? There are pros and cons to handing Hilton a label.

Pros:
1) His website probably attracts more daily visitors than TRL, making it a great marketing platform for the music industry’s most desired demographic. With his built-in audience of diehards, one plug on his website could yield a tidal wave of readers heading to iTunes to check out his recommendations.
2) Hilton is a lightning rod for publicity, right down to sporting fake wounds for his profile in Rolling Stone. He’s almost become more popular than half the people he gossips about.
3) Like another celeb-goes-CEO named Jay-Z, Hilton is multi-faceted, able to combine Celebrity Rap Superstar appearances, gossip pages cameos and SXSW showcases, into one persona that’s always in the public’s eye.

Cons:
1) For every one person who loves Perez, there’s another three that hate him.
2) He can be abrasive. His MS-Paint jobs of coke noses and his constant skewering of Britney Spears alienates people, and might alienate people from ever giving the artists on his label a chance.
3) The resiliency of a gossip columnist can’t be longer than fifteen minutes, can it? When will the hits on his site drop from the millions to the thousands?

In his profile for Rolling Stone, Hilton named some artists he thought were up-and-comers, including Chester French (”a modern Weezer“) and indie queen Robyn. So can Hilton make it as a label head? Check out his listening picks to see if Hilton has a brighter future in the music industry than the compact disc.

Is this the direction the f*cked music indestry is gonna go? Worst idea I’ve heard in a long time.

mr roboto | 2/26/2008, 7:30 pm EST

Personally, whenever I read that this douche is singing the praises of an artist I already like (like Robyn) I get a bit pissed off.

At least when he has a record label I’ll know the music to avoid!

Dear Record Companies,
I have great taste in music and I alienate half the amount of people that Perez does. Give me money and a vanity label. My lawyers are ready to look over your offers as soon as they are faxed over.

Your music savior,
Tyles

I don’t care for him much, but if he has good singers under his music group, I will definitely support and buy

MilanRaddison | 2/26/2008, 11:46 pm EST

Since Perez has become so marginalized it was only a matter of time before he was officially comodified in some capacity. His tastes may seem cutting edge to some but generally they are acts that a lot of people could discover just by watching the foreign charts. They are swayed by his psuedo-indie credibility ALSO it doesn’t hurt that he has a huge audience to which he could promote artists.

I’ve heard of desperate times calling for desperate measures, but this is stretching things beyond all reason.

Tasteless,Classless,Obese. | 2/27/2008, 9:54 am EST

He has NO TASTE.All & I mean ALL of the artists he raves about on his blog are artists that record lables paid Perez to blog about.Think of it as modern advertising.

The truth hurts eh RS? | 2/27/2008, 9:59 am EST

He gets paid to blog about musical acts on his blog.

And you are . . .?

We’re looking for well-known people to bring interest back to the industry. You don’t qualify. What marketing value does a complete unknown like you have? I might as well hire my uncle Dave to run a label.

And if you can afford to retain more than one lawyer you don’t need the money either.

red-haired goddess | 2/29/2008, 1:10 am EST

nice post.

Yeah Right! | 2/29/2008, 6:30 am EST

Everything he plugs has already been signed. He literally just looks at what’s happening in the UK and blogs about it. How is that A and R ?

showbiz | 3/2/2008, 8:21 am EST

It takes a whole lot more than being able to spot an already signed, fully produced artist than it is to find the diamond in the rough that becomes the next superstar.

Shane | 3/25/2008, 1:39 am EST

You really can’t do any worse than Clive. He ruins careers more often than makes them.

Perez is a pig. I won’t buy anything he promotes. He likes Mika and Leona Lewis!!! Nuff said,

Rantee | 7/11/2009, 11:26 pm EST

And Warner Brothers Records is having trouble in today’s music business?!??

This is obviously a sign for all stockholders to SELL IMMEDIATELY!!!
