Weekend Rock List: Female-Fronted Bands

2/22/08, 3:52 pm EST

With one of Rock Daily’s favorite frontwomen blogging her heart out this week, we dedicate this weekend’s Rock List to all those double-x chromosome-fronted bands that rock our stereos. Let us know which band is your favorite, and on Monday, we’ll compile the votes and reveal the Reader’s Rock List. Before you go digging for your copy of Vanity 6, here are our picks:

Blondie
Sleater-Kinney
X-Ray Spex
The Pretenders
Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Garbage - Shirley Manson. No doubt about it.

Have you heard of Fall Back Plan?
WOW… check these guys and gal out.
They are a up and coming band from Baltimore Maryland, but totally a breath of fresh air from the current music scene. This band is sure to go down into the Female Fronted hall of fame.

SKUNK ANANSIE !!!

Charles Crossley, Jr. | 2/26/2008, 10:54 am EST

Well, britney, you’re right about half my picks not even being bands, but after I posted the list, I couldn’t go back and change it. As for the other half being lame, well, you liked the Slits, and if that’s you’re preference, there are only a few raw punk bands from the late 70s on that list. Besides, RS picked 17 of them (all of which were mentioned before I posted my list, I know), so your taste is yours. And yes, I could have cut it down to 5, or I could have blown it up to 200 bands, popular and obscure (Shop Assistants, Discount, Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research. . .). That’s because I didn’t google search that list at all; I researched women in rock four years ago, and I just quickly ran down my memory and then consulted my own list until I hit 101. I wouldn’t know how you’d Google to find a list like that; I pieced my main list together reading one bio after another after another. Of course, you only have my word for it, and since your opinion seems to rate more than your logic, I’m guessing you’ll go totally narcissistic and pretend you’re right.

O bother, the post is ’spose to be Female-Fronted Bands…and for some reason that makes me think of bands with a female Front-woman (silly me)and that limits the scope somewhat, I think…
Quickly now, I have snow to shovel,
1. the Plasmatics…(Wendy O.)
2. Jayne County & the Electric Chairs (?!)
3. Concrete Blonde (for sure)
4. The Moaners (dark snack indeed)
5. Holly & the Italians (tell that girl to shut up)
6. Wham.

And Chrissie Hynde’s a genius!

Robin Tyner | 2/24/2008, 2:03 am EST

I have to agree there should be a special allowance made for Pat Benetar and her band. She rocks harder than almost anyone else on this list!

callie | 2/24/2008, 1:21 am EST

It’s shame that Pat Benatar cannot be truly recognized as a frontwoman of a truly great band.

Her band featuring husband and guitar god Neil Giraldo, rock drummer extrodinare Myron Grombacher, keyboardist Charlie Giordano bass player Roger Capps ruled in the studio and live as well.

And for the notbable execption of Janis, Pat’s voice is head and shoulders above anyone else’s on this list!

If she was billed as “Pat Benatar and the Potato Chips”, rather than “Pat Bentar” she would be near the very top of this list!

Art B. (mmmaxspeed) | 2/23/2008, 6:35 pm EST

Hayley Williams…best band fronted by a female…hands down winner.

She can sing and she’s cute too.

Let’s agree that it is The Pretenders, and we can debate about who comes in second.

I like X as a choice, but that also has John Doe.

If we count the Patti Smith Group, and not treat this as a solo project, she gives The Pretenders a run for their money.

PJ Sparks | 2/22/2008, 11:32 pm EST

Lord knows this would be a better world if we had more Sleater-Kinney music in the future. They deserve to be mentioned as one of the very best bands - male, female, robot (or whatever daft punk is) - of the past 20 years. No joke.
From Call the Doctor thru to The Woods, I dare anyone to find a more consistent and incredible exciting band as Sleater-Kinney has been.
(true enough that music is simply food, and a matter of taste, but still)
