Eddie Vedder on Jack Johnson: “What He’s Doing Is Real”

2/21/08, 3:55 pm EST

In the current issue of Rolling Stone, Jack Johnson’s friends and collaborators weigh in on the unlikely superstardom of the laid-back songwriter. One of those pals, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, had plenty more to say about his fellow musician and surf enthusiast. Check out all the bonus material from Austin Scaggs’ interview with Vedder, including the details of an ill-fated outing and why he didn’t buy Johnson a distortion pedal.

Eddie Vedder on Jack Johnson: “I met his dad first through different waterman activities. I think it was a while before I met Jack. I think Kelly Slater had given me his first record. I was in the islands at the time, and that went great. It was a great record to listen to in nature. There was a point about two or three years ago when I was with Ben Harper. I said, ‘Okay, Ben, how about you and me chip in and get Jack a distortion pedal?’ And we had a little bit of a laugh, you know? But I thought about that a lot, and that was my fault that I wasn’t getting it. What he’s doing is real. As opposed to him getting a distortion box or opposed to him trying to be something else, it’s real. There are so many positive things that you get from listening to his records or seeing him live. I didn’t get it for a long time, but now I get it.

“We were on an ill-fated canoe trip. We were sailing, and we flipped over in a channel. That was quite the little adventure. But we survived that. But, it got kind of life-threatening for a bit. The coolest thing about it was that we were floating in the water – big ocean swells, lot of wind – and we’re bobbing along out there and the mast is pointed straight towards the bottom of the ocean. I didn’t know if we were going be able to upright the deal. And I looked over at Jack and thought, ‘Well, I’m in the water with Jack Johnson, so I was gonna be okay.’ And it turned out he looked over at me and I had a smile on my face, so it made him feel like we were gonna be okay, too. So it’s interesting how you can give each other confidence even though the situation is a bit dire.

“You can go down the list of great artists and kind of understand that the are products of their environment. Whether it’s U2 or Henry Rollins or myself or Johnny Lydon, they’re gonna be products of their environment. Seeing Jack, and seeing the other Hawaiian musicians that he plays with and supports, you witness the connection of the music that he makes and how he grew up. It’s his connection with the planet, his connection with nature, his connection with the ocean, his connection with family, and it all comes through in the music. That atmosphere is real. It’s not like he’s fighting demons, and it’s not an act he puts on.”

Hi, my name is Eddie Vedder and I’m the most pretentious person on the planet. Nice to meet you.

Andy | 2/21/2008, 10:39 pm EST

“What he is doing is real”.

Yeah, real shitty. Jack Johnson is a no-talent hack.

The Intl | 2/22/2008, 1:38 am EST

Just because Eddie Vedder endorses someone doesn’t make them someone to watch. Consider the source.

TB | 2/22/2008, 3:37 am EST

What about anything he said is pretentious? He’s just supporting a fellow musician and surfer. I sense a bit of jealousy here.

zack | 2/22/2008, 3:37 am EST

dude.
jack johnson may suck
but pearl jam is one of the best bands ever.
if you deny the power of them
especially the awesomeness of mccready
then you aren’t listening.
i bet you like dave matthews,
you soulless fucks.

TB | 2/22/2008, 3:41 am EST

Ed Vedder is one of the most least pretentious musicians on the planet. He gives more money to a great number of causes than anyone out there.

anonymous | 2/22/2008, 8:23 am EST

Hi Eddie!

Tallboy | 2/22/2008, 8:49 am EST

TB is correct- Ed does a lot of good and anyone who thinks he is pretentious doesn’t know much about him. And how is Dave Matthews soulless?

Whatever | 2/22/2008, 10:45 am EST

Just another reason why I love Eddie Vedder….and he is so not pretentious….

Aaron | 2/22/2008, 10:50 am EST

andy sounds like a conservative

Skullfreak | 2/22/2008, 12:19 pm EST

Eddie Vedder thinks he’s the next Dylan, or Neil. He’s a mediocre talent at best, and a liberal cry-baby.

Kurt's Corpse | 2/22/2008, 12:22 pm EST

EV is a total liberal crybaby!! I wish he would just go away. This ain’t the 90’s, dude! You haven’t been relevant in over a decade! Mirrorball with Neil Young was one of the worst albums of the last 25 years…

jonathan lex, ky | 2/22/2008, 12:44 pm EST

One thing I’ve learned is that people who hate Vedder are usually people with alot of issues. EV is a force. Whether you like his politics, music or not, you’ve got to admit he is true in everything that he believes. I’m not a JJ fan but Eddie likes him so he must be legit

last sheep | 2/22/2008, 2:26 pm EST

if you don’t understand jack johnson it is probably because you don’t understand youre connection with the earth. the earth breaths slower than that television you are hooked into like an i.v. machine. get out and challenge yourself in nature, connect with the waves and the mountains then listen to some jack johnson and tell me what you think. Real men and women challenge themselves against nature not each other.

Skullfreak | 2/22/2008, 3:12 pm EST

JJ is a tree-huggin’, doped up fraud. The average highschool musician can play better guitar than him. And yes, Eddie Vedder does suck the big one…

Eddie Vedder | 2/22/2008, 3:39 pm EST

Everything I say is really important. So if I say Jack Johnson is important, bow to my altar.

Eddie Vedder | 2/22/2008, 3:42 pm EST

Looks like I started something again. Hey, while you’re arguing about whether or not I’m pretentious, can you all please go to the official Pearl Jam web site and buy some Pearl Jam live albums and t-shirts, and, um, give some money to charity. Just make sure you say the money came from me so I can get the tax write-up.

Eddie Vedder | 2/22/2008, 3:52 pm EST

Sorry, Eddie meantt “tax write-off.” Even Eddie makes mistakes. See how Eddie refers to himself in the third-person? I think Eddie should start doing that to prove how supremely Eddie he is. Please weigh in.

Wow! Seriously? | 2/23/2008, 10:21 am EST

Ed Vedder has let his music speak for himself his entire career. He has had the oppurtunity to become a media-whore for the last 10+ years but has had the dignity not to. He’s not pretentious and is just offering an opinion on soemone’s music. On the other hand I am sure your your opinion is much more educated than Ed Vedder’s when it comes to music. Way to go meathead!!!

Fire Woman | 2/24/2008, 3:47 am EST

TB | 2/22/2008, 3:37 am EST

“What about anything he said is pretentious? He’s just supporting a fellow musician and surfer. I sense a bit of jealousy here.”

Jealousy. hmmm . . . what a profound and original argument!!!

joe | 2/24/2008, 11:57 pm EST

so eddie vedder is ENDORSING jack johnson? dude, he’s just saying he likes his music, and the reasons why! i don’t know about you, but i enjoy talking about music i like with my friends, not because i’m an authority on music, but simply because i want to share it. its just that eddie has a more public medium, but it’s essentially the same thing

karen | 2/25/2008, 12:05 am EST

i’m not a fan of either one, but eddie vedder is just a guy talking about the music he likes. any opinion is valid, because it’s an OPINION! if i say britney spears is a very sane person, it’s MY OPINION!

Skullfreak | 2/25/2008, 1:43 pm EST

Eddie Vedder is a talentless loser.

Fire Woman | 2/25/2008, 5:38 pm EST

it doesn’t mean anything to me either of them were ever born. they have zero influence on my life or tastes.

Dr. Flanders | 2/25/2008, 9:29 pm EST

Ive never seen so many people make negative comments about one guy giving props to another. Im not a jack johnson fan, but alot of people buy his music for whatever reason.

Wow | 3/1/2008, 2:17 pm EST

I checked out this article to read a bit about JJ and was excited to see that a musical icon said some cool things about him. Then, I scrolled down to see these comments…are you guys serious??

You turn an article about two cool guys who happen to be musicians into all of this. Usually when someone makes a comment directed at posters like “you all need to get a life” they themselves are being foolish. But in this case it is absolutely on point…I don’t think I have ever heard a larger amount of stupidity being spewed in one place at one time before.

Even if you don’t care for PJ or JJ’s music, this kind of ire directed at these two individuals is mind-boggling.

Present Tense | 3/6/2008, 3:39 pm EST

You people are ignorant fools. It’s people like you that make society so unpleasant.

Phil | 3/6/2008, 11:30 pm EST

Eddie says he likes Jack; there’s nothing wrong with that.

Go hate someone that’s worth hating, like that guy who reshot those Marilyn Monroe photos with Lindsay Lohan as the stand-in.

yoooooo | 3/26/2008, 11:31 pm EST

eddie vedder is a god

alex | 4/1/2008, 11:12 pm EST

vvv agreed
and how can any one of you say he sucks.
you suck if you think he sucks.
he’s music.
all you other people are just into pop and crap like that but you don’t know what the real soul and love he puts into his music.
what have your parents taught you?
god.
i love you eddie vedder.
and all you haters are jealous of his talent =)

Anonymous | 4/6/2008, 1:00 am EST

JJ is one of the best musicians of this decade. Who else… Hip-Hop has shit the bed. Pop is pop. Country is country, and what the hell is screamo. I believe JJ is some of the most organic and purest form of music we have to date.

C.C. Ridder | 4/28/2008, 2:11 pm EST

Eddie Vedder may be a nice guy, but he is a talentless hack – if his 2008 one-man show in Berkeley, CA was anything to go by.

He probably smoked the same thing as his rabid fans that day. I walked out totally stupefied by this mindless adoration. Thrashing on an acoustic guitar like Richie Havens on speed does not a legend make.

newvision | 7/29/2008, 7:34 am EST

I was checking out the article and found myself looking at the comments. Everyone has the right to free speech and their opinion.
Funny thing is that neither one of these guys is gonna waste time worrying about whether or not you like them or their music. Why waste yours, with negativity over people you don’t like.

Personally, I enjoy listening to both and do so almost daily. I like what both JJ, PJ and EV have to say. I think they are
both “real”. They also worry about the world and the environment that you, I and our children live in and have the means to help their fellow man with causes that they believe in.
They don’t seem consumed with having the latest designer name, buying the “in” things if ya get my drift, like so many people are.
Though they are lucky enough to be able to buy and do things many can’t.

Truth is I admire them both. Yeah, I love their music. But I really admire is the fact that fame hasn’t seemed to destory what is important to them, family, concern over the environment, etc.

Guys… think positive. Really why waste time being negative, life is to short. So get out there and enjoy it. Maybe people shouldn’t waste so much time on the computer, I have a feeling that JJ and EV don’t. And I usually don’t.

Now I have to go check the surf, pick up some trash off the beach,
and work on my surf art. Have a great day!

myspace.com/airguitarloser | 8/3/2008, 6:19 pm EST

I don’t enjoy Pearl Jam’s music. I can’t stand Eddie Vedders vocals, however just ’cause I differ in musical taste doesn’t mean I hate the band and frontman. Vedder is just simply stating his enjoyment of Jack’s music. Nothing more. Stop hating on these so called ”talentless” musicians and go do something productive. M’kay?

TT | 1/28/2009, 11:57 pm EST

I know it’s late, but I decided to get in on this. Eddie Vedder is an awesome guy and maybe the last band leader not to sell out. He is so far from pretentious it’s ridiculous. He is one of the most humble, talented, and generous songwriters on the planet. He donates a lot and doesn’t go around saying it like most famous people (AKA modern musicians who name foundations after themselves)

Brendan | 2/11/2009, 1:59 am EST

I think the coolest thing about Eddie is that he has tried to remain true to where he started out. He is a great spokesman for rock music and a certainly humble ambassador. Pearl Jam is an important band in classic rock history and remains relevant, if you check out their last self-titled album. When Eddie inducted R.E.M. (another fine band) into the rock n roll hall of fame he said, “how I wish Kurt Cobain could have been here to do this instead.”

jazzman | 9/27/2009, 6:53 pm EST

I listen to jazz so I don’t have an opinion about Eddie Vedder or Jack Johnson.
