Madonna’s New Album and Video: Exclusive Rolling Stone Preview

2/15/08, 5:05 pm EST

Madonna has managed to keep most details about her still-untitled follow-up to 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor (due April 29th) under wraps, but Rolling Stone got an early listen to five tracks today and some behind-the-scenes info from producer Nate “Danja” Hills.

Fans who worried that Madonna might be losing inspiration as she approaches fifty need not be concerned. The new album takes a few steps away from the hyper-polished future disco of Confessions toward a more urban-oriented, thumpy funk, featuring production by Timbaland and Pharrell, as well as collaborations with Justin Timberlake. Danja says he worked on the album in London, and that Madonna indicated “she just wanted uptempo, dance, club [sounds] and everything to have a hip-hop underlining.” He adds that Madonna was easy-going and frequently in the studio putting in long hours alongside himself, Timbaland and Timberlake: “She would come in and sit in her chair in the corner and just vibe with us.”

The record’s first single is “4 Minutes to Save the World,” the track Timbaland partially debuted during a Philadelphia Christmas concert in December. “4 Minutes” has a bit of a marching band aesthetic as blasting brass play a scale-like riff, a hard, clanging beat enters and Madonna sings that the “road to heaven is paved with good intentions.” Timberlake and Madonna trade verses, and he appears on the chorus, doing his best Michael Jackson impression while quickly crooning, “We’ve only got four minutes to save the world.” The track ends after a brief breakdown where everything drops out but one of Tim’s signature Bhangra beats, some stabs of brass and Madonna’s urgent tick-tock’s. It’s a loud, busy, energetic track that is apparently getting an equally adventurous video: As previously reported, the clip (which is still being completed) is directed by hot French duo Jonas & François (Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.”). Timbaland makes an appearance, and Madonna and Timberlake play superheroes tackling physical obstacles. The clip features choreography by Jamie King, who worked on Madonna’s Confessions, Re-Invention and Drowned World tours as well as her video for Confessions‘ “Sorry.”

The Pharrell-produced “Candy Store” opens with a big beat and Madonna’s invitation to “Come on in to my store, I got candy galore.” The track is pretty bare on the verses, but there’s a flash of brassy soul on the chorus when harmonies join Madonna singing, “I’ll be your one stop (one stop) candy shop.” The track is punctuated with throbbing breaks filled with hypnotic synths, and Pharrell jumps on the mike for a brief rhyme.

The most lyrical of the five songs is “Miles Away,” a wistful tune about a long-distance relationship with a melody that resembles Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, an album Danja says Madonna admired. “We would come up with a track and him and Madonna would come and do lyrics and melody together,” Danja explains. The song opens with a quickly strummed acoustic guitar, then a stuttering beat drops in and the track slowly swells until it’s filled with atmospheric synths. “You always seem to have the biggest heart when we’re 6,000 miles apart,” Madonna sings grandly, lamenting, “I guess we’re at our best when we’re miles away.” The song has a more airy aesthetic compared to the heavy beats on other tracks, which reflects its more emotional lyrics.

The track that sounds most like a more urban, edgy continuation of Confessions is the excellent “Give It to Me,” which bumps along to a thick synth tone Danja employed on Britney Spears’ Blackout. It’s an aggressive, clubby track with a raw, house-y beat that’s ripe for remixing, and Madonna sings, “When the lights go down and there’s no one left I can go on and on.” It ends after a fast, killer breakdown where she chants “Get stupid” over a xylophone chime as the beat builds into a frenzy and she proclaims, “Give it to me / No one’s gonna stop me now.”

The dance floor theme returns again on “Heartbeat,” which boasts a thumping hip-hop beat with a sandpaper shuffle and twinkling Eighties-reminiscent synths. Madonna opens up her voice more, singing, “Can’t you see when I dance I feel free / Which makes me feel like the only one the light shines on.” The song features a brief rap breakdown that recalls Nelly Furtado’s chanty “Promiscuous” (”See my booty get down,” Madonna speak-sings), but returns to its clubby roots in the end.

Anyone who hates Madonna is clearly envious of her fame and success. Don’t misunderstand, I’m no fan of hers. But it kills me that there are so many haters out there. They can’t stand seeing other people being successful and they can’t restrain themselves from criticising them and wanting to bring them down. Mariah, Celine, Janet, Whitney etc. and Madonna are very different artists. Never compare them to one another. And everyone has different tastes for music. If you don’t like Madonna, or any other artists, then don’t listen to them. Jesus, haters, get a life. Learn to respect. You’re pathetic.

laurels already.

ever hear of the ACLU, stop messing
with freedom of speech Madonna fans.
You guys cheat so much to help this
woman…what about being spiritual?
Does that include cheating and stopping others from having their
say?? The hypocrisy that surrounds
this woman is absurd.

Earth to DEE | 4/5/2008, 6:39 am EST

Madonna always has to collaborate with others…she doesn’t write the music to the songs. And, get this,
even if she doesn’t write a word
of the song, she gets first credit.
I have had friends who’s songs she’s
done, and in order for her to do the song, she had to get first credit.
One of them almost pulled the song because it’s so wrong, but he needed the money. So much for Madonna being so creative…her images, music, and often lyrics are taken from others, however, she takes all the credit. This con artist has nothing to do with creation, she is mere imitation.

THIS IS HOW MADONNA DOES IT | 4/5/2008, 6:34 am EST

She jumps onto every trend and pretends she is a big part of it.
Talks or pays her way to get big
pictorials, and hires or ‘becomes
friends’ with the latest popular
stars so she can get in on their
attention. Have you people not
noticed this. By the way, she puts
her fan clubs up to writing and
promoting her on sites like this.
All the little worker bees get
incentives, like an autographed pic to mulit call radio and support her , they get led to where she needs
support on her fan sites…go check it out, it’s hilarious. They are called Madonna street teams. The girl has done NOTHING original, since raping Marlyn Monroes image, she has continued doing it to so many others…many who she robbed of their time in the sun. Because she saw their ‘thing’ was cool, and borrowed it for another incarnation. She is the lowest of the low, anyone who likes her should have their head examined. Oh, she did say many times in the UK press that Americans are stupid, she must be talking about her fans.

Dee | 4/2/2008, 9:49 pm EST

Madonna is tops and always will be, but I’m dreading this latest CD after reading about her work with Timberlake (talentless bum who has no right to be in her presence) & Timbaland Inc. Madonna DOES NOT collaborate with ANYONE–she doesn’t need to. She uses obscure producers much to her advantage, and NEVER uses the “flavor of the month” (esp. not from the wretched hip hop camp) for any help, thank you very much!

Peter (New York City) | 4/2/2008, 1:06 am EST

MADONNA Rocks, Rolls, and she is filled with not only R&B, Club, and Rock Esoteric beats…….she is a damn genius who reinvents herself each time she releases a new cd……..I am so saddened by so many jealous people who have nothing else to do with their pathetic lives than to mention negative things about her. Oh well….in general we ALL know that humans can be cruel, insensitive, and down-right a-holes…….but I hope Madonna will make a success of this “HARD CANDY” cd as she has done with all of her other outstanding and successful cd’s. Madonna……U GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!I LOVE U :o )

Hmmmm snickers or mars ….smarties or mr big…..chips or cheezies…oh were we talking about comparing artists ( I mean prepackaged industry >>>???) The only relevant is the cash it makes the backers and the “artists”. And for all this space …no of it means anything against the sales..not the downloads or clubs..but the sales. So save your breath and go buy a record. And I’m not even going to compare names…and that’s my official Feedback. LJ

Fist if you are a fun of Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Hosuton and who ever.. each one of us likes one of the artists above songs… we all do or did…

So stop talking fucking shit about Madonna… with exception of Mariah (and good for her with MIMI) where is Janet (Discipline fucking sucks and EXCUSE me before you are ready to rip my head off… I love me some Ms. Janet from Janet, Velvet Rope, or even Damita Jo) and Whitney (what happeend???? Where did she go??? I absolutely love her)

In regards to Madonna, yes she doesn’t have “pipes of Mariah or Whitney” but when it comes to being above average, being ahead of everyone else, being fierce, and a fabulous entertainer…. ain’t no body better than MADONNA… no before you choose to rip my head of.. just be honest with yourself…

Loved Confessions and her earlier work, so really looking forward to this one. Still hot at 50! Got to love those incredible eyes. And, I actually I think her voice is unique, sexy, and perfect for her music. Hope the new album has that edge she had lost from the mid 90’s until Confessions.

Liviu | 3/5/2008, 1:22 pm EST

MirwaisRulez | 3/5/2008, 6:48 am EST

she always has something new to introduce to the listeners…she might doesnt have the voice, but her songs have always been better than Mariah Carey or Britney…remember Ray of Light which made eletronica music popular, or dont tell me, the combo of country and electro….shes just awesome

Crybaby | 2/28/2008, 2:57 pm EST

I wonder how many of these posts are people from the music industry and have either met or know Madonna personally. How many of you are actually fizzling out in your own careers and don’t know how Madonna does it. Who here might be Ms. Love or Ms. Carey or whomever wants to vent about the Pop sensation. Who here is famous and acting like a spoiled rotten drama queen ‘c’ word?

I wonder…something to ponder over.

if anything, this isn’t the first R&B/urban influenced album she’s ever putting out there…remember 1994’s “Bedtime Stories”? While “Bedtime” was more seductive in a R&B and mid-tempo way, I think this new album is an element of “Bedtime Stories” mixed in with “Confessions” that gives it a more urban and hip-hop twist to it. Looking forward for the new album release!!!

No matter what anyone says or thinks about Madonna, these things are sure:

1) she is a legend in our on time/generation and we should enjoy every second;

2) She has the most Top 40 American hits than anyone else (tied with Elvis);

3) Those who don’t like her either don’t know what they are talking about or are afraid of something. Hmm. Only they know what.

Wow, all those impressive accomplishments and she still sucks ass!!!

And I can’t take anyone’s opinion seriously who thinks Madonna can act!

jason ridge | 2/23/2008, 11:59 pm EST

MADONNA, pop icon, revolutionary, visionary, mother, writer, goddess, director, actress, leader and all woman. She also happens to be the biggest selling female artist of ALL time and to boot, its all her own doing. Shes inspired and continues to do so, a generation of pop performers from n-sync to kylie minogue, her stage productions and marketing ploys changed the face of popular culture…..even Boriah Carey admits to being a fan and quoted saying at the Grammy’s in 2006 “shes amazing and a living legend”. Her album will be spectacular regardless of what the haters say, her lowest seller American Life still shifted just over 5.9 million, thats more than most artists best selling album these days, in short shes a genius! Long may she continue to rub people up the wrong way!

Frank Ridgeway | 2/23/2008, 6:31 pm EST

there’s just no cure for this, is there?

Paris UK | 2/23/2008, 3:08 pm EST

All you American fans should be ashamed of yourselves - get out there right now and start campaiging against the Clear Channel ban. I think it’s disgusting the way politics and pop culture are mixed up in the U.S. What happened to the Dixie Chicks is a prime example of America’s shame. How dare a media group ban an artists songs because she spoke out against the war. You are supposed to be a goddamn democrasy aren’t you?! If there really is a huge demand for Madonna (as I suspet there is, just like the rest of the planet,) then ring those radio stations up and demand they play some Madonna. Hardcore fans: write letters. Mariah Carey? Yeah she’s great fab singer balh blah blah, if you like that sort of thing. Respect for her achievements. But personally, I find it hard to find someone to admire in this world (a problem Madonna herself admitted to on American Life,) but please, Mariah is hardly someone you could hang a poster of up on your wall. It would just be embarrassing. No one would even know who she was over here in the UK anyway. I am an intelligent young woman, and I feel that Madonna, although she is a media-whore admittedly, is worthy of my respect. She’s interesting. She just has ‘it’. When I watch Desperately Seeking Susan, part of me hurts with wanting to be her (just a little). Has Mariah ever made you feel that way, honestly. She is SO uncool. And yes, I am going on about Mariah, but only because everyone else has made an issue out of it. Take care people!

Jay | 2/23/2008, 12:33 pm EST

“LIVING LEGEND” “ICON” …How lucky I feel to have been alive at the same time as this awesome artist! Thank you Madonna for keeping me on the edge of my seat or on my feet! …for what will be decades! Let’s face it where Madonna goes, it’s just damn fun!! Can’t wait for the next album and TOUR! There is no concert like a Madonna concert! If you didn’t know that. ..find out, you will not be disapointed! Peace out.

Alright alright. Those who love Madonna will always praise her no matter what she does. On the same token, those who hate her will continue to put her down. But you know what? The only person who benefits from all this is Madonna herself. The more you talk about her, the more records she sells. She’s the one who’s laughing all the way to the bank here. I agree with someone here who said that her music is purely fun. I actually stopped liking her when she took herself seriously i.e. that whole Evita thing and Madonna as a director? C’mon. I am a fan. Love her very first album. She should stick with what she does best - making fun enjoyable pop music.

How can anyone say Madonna is an original? That she works harder than any other artist? Madonna sounds a lot like Kylie Minogue, and Kylie sounds like every other dance/pop tart out there. They’re only famous because they became celebrities, not artists. There’s nothing original about Madonna’s music. If you want originality, try Kate Bush, Fiona Apple, Stevie Nicks…if you want fluff, listen to Madonna.

A lot of these comments that were made pro and against Madonna are well documented and not stuff of tabloid trash. Try sounding educated yourself before you accuse others of not being such.

People in here have been trashing Mariah and other female artists with the same tactics that other people have been attacking Madonna, yet you Madonna fans are the first to cry “foul.” Such hypocrisy. Yeah, the article is just about Madonna, but the funny part is, you’re all so quick to defend her, but she probably wouldn’t acknowledge you if you ran up to her on the street..yeah, she’s a wonderful person.

Madonna has always been a remarkable entertainer its kid of shocking that some of these people on her put so much energy in attacking her for no reason at all. Can anyone really name one artist who puts as much as Madonna puts into her projects I have yet to see any one male or female of tries so hard to make so many people happy. And whats even really sadder is she has not hurt any of you in any way, yet thousands of people have been helped by by her over the years with her countless and generious donations that started from her very first pay day. Not to mention the millions who have been touched by her music.

Its ok to be a big fan of other artists even if they don’t do what Madonna does but to rake her over the coals because you may prefer them over her is childish at best, and vise versa.

Madonna should be respected WE all know she has earned it.

And to list a bunch of taboid trash as facts is well shows some of you have no education. And to list law suits that you have no understanding of but what the media paints it to be is just the same is it not? Madonna has never lost a actual lawsuit proveing she herself has done anything illegal face it people Madonna is worth millions she is a easy target and she works with others just like the rest and they so far to date are the ones who acted wrong , Madonna had zero clue that what she was provided to work with was taken from another source and it has NEVER been the lyrics she herself wrote.

Anonymous | 2/19/2008, 5:57 pm EST

Lord Madonna had ZERO to do with the FROZEN lawsuit, it was over a base line supposeively taken from some guys song in Belguim MADONNA did not have anything to do with this, she wrote the lyrycs and this last I heard was ON APPEAL! Of course Madonna is listed in the suit she recorded the single, Madonna had nothing to to with the alleged law suit! And EVERYONE knows Madonna had nothing to do with what Lenny did on Justify My LOve she had NO clue he had stolen the lyrycs to the song he provided to Madonna.

THis is shameless and just stupid.

Anonymous | 2/19/2008, 5:51 pm EST

Eddie Wilson what planet are you on? Some of you OLD queens need to lay off Madonna the older you get the bitter you get. If the woman was not relevant then explain how she has had the 3 biggest hits of her entire career since 2000. Her first 2 singles from her last album spent a total of 22 weeks straight at #1 on the World Chart, Her last CD made history by topping 43 countries in its very 1st week and the single managed the same feat, her last tour made history by grossing more than any other female artist in history in a record 3 months.

And the list and the beat goes on Eddie so if Madonna has not been relavant for 15 years then NO one ever will be again.

Eddie Wilson | 2/19/2008, 3:33 pm EST

Oh my God, Madonna hasn’t been relevant in about 15 years. I can’t believe you people. Who gives a shit? I think most of you need to read a book or get a hobby instead of whacking off on this thread.

I don’t get it, and I don’t want to.

CK | 2/19/2008, 3:10 pm EST

“CK, don’t be ridiculous. Madonna WON the Belgian accusation and Justify my love was produced by Lenny Kravitz with samples from Public Enemy.”

Then you need to do some research. Just Google “Salvatore Acquaviva Madonna Frozen” and you’ll find all kind of articles on that case.

As far as “Justify My Love”, yes Lenny Kravitz produced it, but Ingrid Chavez wrote part of the lyrics to the song, but it was originally credited to just Lenny & Madonna. Ingrid sued, it was settled out of court, and later pressings of THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION CD now show Ingrid as co-writer. Perhaps you should re-read your own post to see examples of poor arguments.

PS. Just because critics approve of something, that doesn’t necessarily make it good.

Iv! | 2/19/2008, 1:21 pm EST

CK, don’t be ridiculous. Madonna WON the Belgian accusation and Justify my love was produced by Lenny Kravitz with samples from Public Enemy. And keep saying that her music is weak, her dance is poor, but you can’t deny that her albuns are all expert-minded producitions touching the best of what they propose to offer. She’s the only female singer in the UK Music Hall of Fame along with such monsters like Led Zeppelin, Queen and Prince. That’s critic approval, a quality proof. And I didn’t have to talk about chart topping or such poor arguments…
And about controversy, she’s now an ICON. Nearly everything she does cause an impact since there are lost of sights for a same event. Since Erotica, ALL OF HER PUBLIC CASES OF CONTROVERSY was only because she never go quiet. She could, but that would be coward, something she almost never was and never was in her public/private life. Bus the worldwide sucess of albuns like Music and Ray Of Light became because they were almost-perfect albuns of pop music. And i agree she’s not the best female singer in the world since there are voices like Beth Gibbos and Lauryn Hill in their own right level of preciosism, but she’s arguably the bst artist in the whole world, making music and shows like no other woman before and after tried, and I doubt one could do it like her. That’s all.

Warren | 2/19/2008, 12:04 pm EST

I am excited to know that her new album will be available soon. I cannot wait until it comes out. She is one of the hardest working women out there. Look at what she does! I have every album of hers from Madonna to Confessions Tour. Looking forward to Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Thanks, for letting me know.

CK | 2/19/2008, 8:56 am EST

“Madonna may not have as many Hot 100 chart toppers as Mariah, but at least all twelve of her U.S. #1’s got there honestly; without employing shameless ploys.”

Are you kidding? Madonna wouldn’t have had the career she’s had if she weren’t constantly trying to be controversial and pushing people’s buttons. Nearly every album she’s came out with was preceded by some sort of calculated controversy about her. Her singing is slightly above average, her dancing is OK, her music and lyrics are anything but brilliant. Her music videos were elaborate productions that were often times better than the songs themselves. Just like Britney Spears, she was an overexposed celebrity whose public persona overshadowed the mediocrity of her music.

You want to talk about Mariah stripping on MTV, but what about Madonna and her EROTICA/Sex Book era? Although a moderate success, her EROTICA album failed to match the success of her previous albums, and along with AMERICAN LIFE, is the lowest selling album of her career. People were starting to get tired of her. She was becoming a joke, a caricature of herself, which is why she doesn’t talk much about that period. And who can forget the classlessness she displayed on national television on shows like Arsenio Hall and David Letterman.

You talk about Mariah being accused of plagiarism but you seem to forget Madonna lost a lawsuit from a Belgian songwriter accusing her of plagiarizing one of his songs for “Frozen.” She also settled out of court for not giving songwriting credit to Ingrid Chavez for “Justify My Love.”

Madonna’s accomplishments may be impressive and a lot better than those of her peers. There are a lot more talented female musicians than Madonna, however, whom have never got the recognition that Madonna did. That’s a good thing, though, because they never had to forsake their talent in order to become overexposed.

alysa | 2/19/2008, 8:12 am EST

I’m not into Madonna, but I always thought she was underrated. I think she has a beautiful - if not powerful - voice. It’s just the songs that she sings are so awful. I liked her doing the EVITA stuff.

Unconditional Madonna fan | 2/19/2008, 5:06 am EST

I’m so sick of the whiners complaining about the purported “style” of Madonna’s new CD when they haven’t even heard it yet.

If an artist ventures outside of their comfort zone, they get accused of “selling out” (Nelly Furtado anyone?) and I think that’s total bullshit. Yet if they stay within that comfort zone, others accuse them of being afraid to “take risks.”

NEWSFLASH you fuckwits: an artist isn’t “selling out” simply because they do something that defies the box some of so-called “fans” have decided to put them in for their own comfort level. When did Madonna ever promise anyone that she’d forever always make dance/techno/electro/euro pop? I expect Madonna to do what makes her happy - and if she wants to venture into hip hop/R&B this time around, then fucking more power to her! I don’t expect her to listen to two-faced, fickle “fans” who think they own her or know what’s best for her art. Either buy the album, or not. But you have no say in what direction SHE decides to take HER music in. All you can do is not buy it. Madonna will make money anyway.

Chav | 2/19/2008, 2:15 am EST

I like Madonna, but to me, I always thought she was a little overrated. Her music is fun to listen to, but that’s pretty much it; she’s just glorified ear candy. Her lyrics don’t challenge me emotionally or intellectually, her voice doesn’t move me inside. It’s just kind of there. For me, there’s a time and place to listen to Madonna, but she also bores me real quick. I respect her, anyway.

what a joke? | 2/19/2008, 1:54 am EST

“Madonna may not have as many Hot 100 chart toppers as Mariah, but at least all twelve of her U.S. #1’s got there honestly; without employing shameless ploys.”

Are you kidding me? Madonna probably wouldn’t have been famous if she didn’t try so hard to be risque. Almost every album she’s ever come out with has been preceded by some very calculated “controversy.” I’ll give her credit for knowing how to stir up s**t, but she wouldn’t have made it on the basis of her music alone, which is hardly brilliant in itself. She’s always been about image and sex–her videos were always better than the songs themselves. She’s never been original; she’s always been quick to spot an upcoming trend and then pretend she started it (i.e. Voguing and her faux-techno Ray of Light album). And as far as voices go, you can pluck any gal from any karaoke bar that sounds a lot better than Madonna. Madonna also proved that she was a punk when she backed out of another “controversy” when she pulled the plug on her anti-Bush “American Life” video in the wake of the Dixie Chicks incident.

Rye-Rye | 2/19/2008, 12:29 am EST

OMFG!! This crap is crazy! Madonna and Mariah are two different singers/celebrity. It’s like comparing raisin bran to lucky charms. What ever happened to the days where you listened to who you like? You hear a song that rocks so you crank it, and it didn’t matter who the h*ll sang it. The new Madonna album will rock. Is R&B everyone’s preference? No. I live in a state where the only Madonna they play is on the oldies station or adult contemporary. Most people listen to country, rock, or hardcore rap in Virginia. I’m appreciative that they still sell her albums here! LOL! I think it’s refreshing to hear Madonna branching out. Maybe she has dipped in the R&B cash cow (repeatedly) in the past. This time around she has more experience in her bag, and can probably rock something else out of the old cow. On the positive side, she has Timbaland (who is pretty phenomenal) helping her out. Just appreciate what the album will be. I keep reading great responses about it. Even this article gives the album it’s props. Although, I did hear the rumor about her making a crap album to give Warner Bros. the big ole’ F U!!! I don’t think Madonna would f*ck her fans over. She loves us. So SHUT THE FRONT DOORS, and go buy the damn album. She’s an icon. She has outlasted everybody. Give Madonna a break.

stevo | 2/18/2008, 11:09 pm EST

oh boy Maddy decides to jump on the hip hop train……..isnt this a bit too late?

Jeez hip hop is a mockery of itself at this point and is revieling MAJOR signs of becoming the complete joke its always been (in my book). The world need yet another hip hop project like it needs a whole in its head. Wow see another brother talkin bitches and whores, brilliant…….Remember how Nirvanah made 12 years of hair bands bit the dust? Well its gonna happin to Hip Hop and BOY will that be a glorious day. Hip Hop f**king S**ks and soon the world will agree……

Alberto | 2/18/2008, 10:37 pm EST

I will certainly buy Madonna’s new album. Her albums never disappoint.

WOW. I can’t believe how much energy is put into all this.I LOVE female singers period.Madonna’s album is gonna be fire as is Mariah’s and Janet’s. At this point they really don’t have to prove anything to anyone ever again.I am huge fans of both Madonna and Mariah and I have to say I don’t love them both the same. For you Madonna only fans so what if you think Mariah only does the same thing over and over(which is news to me) you don’t like her so it shouldn’t matter anyway.Oh and as far sas record sells and all that crap none of us are getting paid to research it so get over it. These diva wars a soooo childish. Grow Up!!!!

anonymous | 2/18/2008, 6:43 pm EST

WOW. I dont understand people. This article is about MADONNA. The fabulous one. All others need not be mentioned.

DMWN | 2/18/2008, 6:13 pm EST

I would have been perfectly content to come here and just talk about Madonna, but since you vapid lambs decided to infest the place like roaches, I’ll say this…six words describe Mariah Carey: Boring…Corny…Stuck-Up…Fake…Stu pid…Insane.

The bitch is not original, or special. She was created - CREATED - by Tommy Motolla for the sole purpose of being Sony Music’s answer to Whitney Houston. Then to cement her career, she began an affair with Tommy (while he was still married to his first wife) and later married the old coot. When she later left the guidance of Tommy, her career instantly fell apart. It wasn’t until L.A. Reid was appointed head of Island Def Jam and made Mariah his pet project (using his, ahem, “connections” to get her back on the radio) that she got her career back. So what does that say? That she doesn’t have the foresight to handle her own shit and basically needs a “daddy” to tell her what to do and make everything alright. She’s not intelligent, creative, or instinctual enough to be her own person. Okay, fine…she has a good singing voice (although its been waning for a decade), but she has absolutely nothing to say. Go to any Baptist Church in America and you can pluck out BETTER singers than Mariah from the choir. She’s trite. After 18 years since her debut, to this day Mariah still simply cannot exist without being some powerful record guys protege. And lets not forget how many times this dingbat has been accused of/sued for stealing and/or plagiarizing music from other artists and songwriters. The most shameful example being her song “Emotions,” which blatantly hijacked the music from an act CALLED ‘The Emotion’ on their superior “The Best of My Love.”

In addition to that, the way she blatantly exploits her biracial heritage to shamelessly play the fence between black and white, and pander herself to both audiences is tacky. She has no soul or authenticity. She’s a puppet and a tool. And dear God, don’t let her go off her meds…we saw what happened the last time her chemical imbalance flared up. The fruitcake went to stripping in front of twelve years on MTV and then had to be locked in a padded room, until doctors figured out how what level dosage of Prozac to put her on. In the end, maybe I was wrong…maybe she IS original. She’s the original Amy Winehouse/Britney Spears - going nuts on camera.

Now as far as comparisons to Madonna go…

* Madonna generates more revenue than Mariah.
* Madonna has more awards (including more Grammy’s) than Mariah (is she still begging for a MTV VMA? lol).
* Forbes estimates that Madonna is 200 million dollars richer than Mariah. TWO HUNDRED MILLION! LOL!
* Madonna has a MUCH larger recording contract (120 million from Live Nation vs. the 20 million Mariah got from IDJ)
* Mariah may be a bigger/more likely US seller, but worldwide Madonna has her in total cumulative album sales.
* Madonna’s tours (where artists make the REAL money) crush hers. Mariah regularly cancels shows for poor attendance.
* While Madonna was in charge of Maverick Records, it became the most successful vanity label in history…by contrast, Mariah has had 2 vanity labels (Crave and MonarC) quickly shut down on her.
* Madonna, unlike Mariah, has never been dropped (oh, excuse me, “paid to leave”) from a label.

So in the end, what does Mariah have…a deteriorating voice, a bossman telling her what to do and how to do it…plus a handful of more bought-and-paid-for domestic chart toppers…big whoop. In a climate where acts like Flo Rida are topping the charts for record-breaking stints, is that really a big deal? Madonna may not have as many Hot 100 chart toppers as Mariah, but at least all twelve of her U.S. #1’s got there honestly; without employing shameless ploys…like retailing them for two quarters, and giving away free downloads to fan club members to get them to chart higher.

Madonna is the bigger, wealthier and more accomplished superstar/cultural icon.
Mariah is just a Jeopardy question waiting to happen.

“Which artists has had the most Hot 100 Chart Toppers? Is it the Beatles…? Elvis…? Paula Abdul…? Milli Vanilli…? Mariah Carey…?”

And most probably wouldn’t even guess her.

Patrick | 2/18/2008, 6:05 pm EST

People will laugh at her…kids don’t like her, she’s TOO OLD for this kiddie crap.

Israell Isaac | 2/18/2008, 4:44 pm EST

In which way is Mariah a better songwriter??? Madonna wrote MOST of her first album and co-wrote MOST of second one. From the third studio album she would always co-write everything. Madonna’s lyrics are original and innovative. They don’t ONLY focus on love. They also deal with SPIRITUALITY, MYSTICISM and other topics as well.

Have you ever heard her version of Love Don’t Live Here Anymore? She shot a music video for it. Check it out BEFORE criticizing her vocals. Do you know how hard it is to sing & dance at once??? Celine Dion & Mariah Carey never danced and sang at the same time Madonna would LIVE for countless songs in concert. The Who’s That Girl Tour was COMPLETELY LIVE, very much energetic. It took strenght to keep going like this for two hours every night. Her vocals on the Drowned World and Confessions Tour were just amazing and LIVE.

Please check out her Sorry music video. She included such a yoga move in her choreography. She would place one of her feet behind her head. She would do it every night on her Confessions Tour as well, the HIGHEST GROSSING TOUR EVER for a female artist in History! Now, that’s a feat no one else exploited.

If Madonna is just a smart business woman with no exceptional TALENT, why didn’t all those other females copy and top her? Many thought Cyndi Lauper would reign but Madonna did and still does. Some thought Paula Abdul and Debbie Gibson would take over but di they??? Get your facts straight before trying to trash Mrs. Ritchie. Undaztood? I like all of those other females alright. I’m just telling you the truth. She IS the undisputed Queen Of Pop. Many high-profile magazines and papers, such as Q and Daily Mail constantly refer to her as such. Just admit and accept it. There was Marilyn Monroe. Now, there is Madonna, a living legend, a woman’s worth.

Andrew | 2/18/2008, 3:51 pm EST

JohnC YOUR such a FOOL!!!!
First of all Madonna fans did not start this CRAP! They started a WEBSITE when Madonna released her last album bashing MADONNA and trying to get people NOT to buy her albim THIS WAS IN THE NEWS and POSTED in an article on BILLBOARD! ITs a FACT! Something you don’t seem to care about.

Madonna herself likes Mariah and Mariah must like her to call her a legend and an ICON.

Mariah will get a ton of ariplay as usual so YES she will chart better on the HOT 100 which is driven by AIRPLAY most of it PAYOLA so its NO big deal to have FAKE hots instead of singles that actually sell. And yes I know some of Mariahs do sell but almost all her #1 singles in the USA where due to AIRPLAY NOT SALES!

I think Mariah has a good voice and SO does MADONNA>

Madonna will rule the WORLD CHART as she has always done, and if CLEARCHANNEL still has her banned I expect low sales in the USA maybe 2 million but face it that is great when no one is playing your music, but reality is Madonna will go straight to #1 in 40(+) countries and Mariah will hit #1 in the USA maybe the UK only, her last album only topped the USA chart!

Madonna will sell more singles and albums than mariah globally but she will beat Madonna maybe in the USA by buying all that AIRPLAY which does sell albums!
And I do agree Mariah is not OLD but neither is MADONNA!

MADONNA is also a gifted song write , PRODUCER and vocalist proven by her 25 years of being the top female vocalist in the entire world!
She is also the most famous person on this planet!

And say what ever you want Madonna has a excellent voice based on the posts here the majority rather listen to Madonna than Mariah!

And to say there are better performers (vocalist, dancers ) etc than Madonna is just plain rediculous if this is true then why do people pay RECORD amounts to go to Madonna’s SELL OUT shows??

Janet lips sings her shows, Mariah stands there like an darn fool, Madonna can dance just as good if not better than Janet and she actually SINGS LIVE while doing it , that is a FEAT!

Madonna has never had a movie that did not make a profit according to EW Madonna has grossed around 2 billion in film revenues that is a lot of cash is it not?

Mariahs last tour grossed less than what Madonna grossed in NYC alone! Now how sad is that??

Jay | 2/18/2008, 2:46 pm EST

Lets not kid ourselves here, this forth coming effort may have her return back to her earlier beginings with an r’b sound but lets face it; this album will have Madonna all over it. She won’t release a spin off of whats now-theres going to be a hitch to it. Shes just not that simple at this stage in her game. I think she will own the next coming year in the industry. Like her or hate her this will be a very BIG year for Madonna. 25 years and she hasn’t stopped, why do the haters even bother anymore? She never listened before and the chances are even more she never will either! This will be a huge album like it or not.

dd | 2/18/2008, 1:18 pm EST

Sorry, but Mariah can’t sing if her life depended on it and many critics agree. She’s not a singer; she’s a human dog whistle. While Madonna may not be a “genius” in any category, she is certainly adequate. Madonna also never had to hire a gossip columnist to give her good buzz and criticize her competition.

JohnC | 2/18/2008, 12:50 pm EST

I find it pretty sad that Madonna fans always find it necessary to put Mariah down in order to make Madge look better. Sorry- it isn’t working. For one, Mariah’s money winner is her voice. It is her God given talent. Madonna’s moneymaker is how she sells herself to her fans and public, because even her most ardent fans must admit she is not the best singer. Anyone can learn to be like Madonna. She doesn’t have any unique talents. There are much better dancers than her (Janet,) much better singers (too long a list,) much better singing actresses (again, too long a list.) She is just an incredibly smart woman with a knack for success. Mariah, on the other hand, is an incredibly gifted vocalist, songwriter, producer, and a very smart woman also with a knack for success. Yeah she had her Glitter debacle, but you can’t expect someone to be perfect all the time. She more than made up for it with Mimi, and will more than make up for it again when her new album comes out. Her new single is getting rave reviews and after only a few hours of airplay it charted on Billboard. So give it a rest, Madonna worshipers- Mariah is NOT fat, she is NOT old (she’s only 37,) she is definitely NOT talentless, and she will DEFINITELY steal the spotlight again from Madonna when she puts her new album. Madonna is just trying this new sound because it’s what’s in. Mariah has been doing hip hop R&B for over a decade. Madonna can take a lesson or two from MC in this genre.

Dangen | 2/18/2008, 11:19 am EST

Excuse me, who’s Mariah?

Anonymous | 2/18/2008, 4:50 am EST

Madonna’s album is the only one I ‘m looking forward to in 2008.

I like Mariah’s remixes at times but I don’t enjoy her as a person. For someone who says she’s half black the bitch can’t move for shit. Also Mariah looked like a piggy in a blanket on her last whore tour. And I’ve seen better show production in some drag show here in Atlanta. Bitch sit your ass down!

Madonna will always put her own touch no matter who she works with. I’m sure T&J learned a thing or two working with Madonna.

Oh and the reason radio won’t play her music is because she spoke out against BUSH with her American Life video so Clear Channel who owns 80% of US Radio and who’s owner is Republican decided to boycott radio play because he labeled Madonna as Anti-American.

Madonna will always keep pushing the envelope artistically as a gay man I owe Madonna a lot of thanks for embracing and supporting the gay community.

Ryan-

I appreciate your sentiments, but Madonna WAS considered an R&B singer when she started out People were surprised when they found out she was white. Her first album IS considered and R&B album. Then, she made Bedtime Stories which was a pretty big success in the US at least. That was considered R&B. So, she is - in no way at all - jumping on any R&B bandwagon.

Madonna rocks. This is a fact, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Ryan | 2/17/2008, 10:30 pm EST

Yeah, I have to agree with a lot of these statements. I have loved Madonna’s music for the past 25 years and really liked a few hits from her last CD, “COTDF”. I think “Hung Up’ was a stand out hit for her and probably the best from her of of the past 10-15 years; arguably the best since Vogue.

But I have to say, that I am less eager for the new album with her collaborating with timberland and timberlake; who I cannot stand. I think Madonna does best sticking with what she does well with; pop and dance music. She is and has never been a R&B singer and has never seemed to cross over to the rhythmic or black audiences she has tried to reach with previous attempts. Why 25 years later start now? Who gives a fuck? Who cares what 99.99 percent of popular radio stations are playing which is currently is hip hop, young black music. Times have changed and she has never been one to really care until now? She still sells unbelievably well in Europe and other countries and still is a cash cow for her record label regardless of how well she does here?

Anyways, I think this album will do well granted, but I am less excited as I have been about previous albums of hers.

That said, while I am not privy to call out research, I do have access to numbers. Touch My Body is currently EXPLODING in airplay right out of the box. So, say what you will. Numbers can’t be disputed.

Interesting that Bjork didn’t cop the same flack for collaborating with Timbaland on her latest album.

I admit I did think Madonna was trying to get a hit by collaborating with Timbaland, Timberlake and Williams, but perhaps she just wants to make good music with some people who’s producing she likes.

Of course she wants to be popular and famous - she’s an entertainer and that’s what her role is. If she wants to make hits, fair enough. I am sick of everyone hiring Timbaland and Williams though.

I’d personally like to see her give William Orbit another call, but I guess she’s not into repeating herself.

Madonna is a songwriter, musician, singer, dan cer-completley author. Poor Mariah, slutty style is so passe

john s | 2/17/2008, 6:31 pm EST

Madonna may be desperate but at least she’s never had to use A frog faced idiot like Roger Friedman from Fox News to hype up all her projects, like Moooriah does. Mariah Carey is a has-been and judging by the poor callout research on her latest single, she should just try and kill herself again.

PORTUGAL | 2/17/2008, 6:25 pm EST

Portugal is waiting for another Triple Platinum album like the last 2 albums she released (Confessions and Confessions Tour)

Hey Mr. DJ put the Record ON!

NUNO | 2/17/2008, 6:22 pm EST

Well… Madonna just signed the bigger contract EVER in the Record Industry for 3 new albums…

Plus… she was EVERY YEAR on the past 2 decades THE BEST SELLING ARTIST for WARNER MUSIC.

I think these 2 things say it all.

de Sascha | 2/17/2008, 5:53 pm EST

Hey there!

Has anyone forgotten one thing?:
She just signed a new record deal worth over $120 Million !!!
That includes 5 more Lp’s and another 3 WORLD TOURS at least!!
Who give#s a shit about No.1 hits, if ure the most successful Music Artist anyway. In 2006 she generated over $ 190 Million alone with her Confessions Tour !
The Material Girl at this point is gernerating more money now, than she did in the 80’s and 90’s combined !! If I was Madonna, why would I go on a pension scheme.
And Guys, one last thing, I am 29 years of age now… and in twenty years I’ll be 49. I would not like to retire just because I am about to hit 50… for fuck sake!!!!
Pick uo ure brains u left on ure remote controls!!

a collabo with Justin & Timbaland is SCREAMING DESPERATION.
I find it hard to believe someone in a status like Madonna would ever want to go w/ artists 100 feet below her level just to get a hit

Jalous that's all | 2/17/2008, 4:27 pm EST

Whoever trashes Madonna is just plain jalous that she’s still puttting out successful hits after all these years…
Madonna Rules!!!!

jason | 2/17/2008, 3:29 pm EST

Madonna will fail miserably this time, well at least hopefully.

Using Justin and Timbland is just outright pathetic. She saw how Nelly found a new level of popularity with timbo, so did justin and now Madonna is trying really hard to get a US hit. Pathetic.

Madonna is not a legend, only to blinded fans LOL

Again, why is Madonna the one who has feud with the most of the divas? Right, because her attitude reaks. She is a talentless whore who uses other people

anto | 2/17/2008, 2:49 pm EST

i never got Carey, an why she’s stll goin, like a zillion other’s all doing the same safe thing, there is no real talent or kindness about her, for all her money she dressess like a slut, whereas Madonna will continue to make amazing music which reaches peoples hearts and has realness, I love that she adopted David, has raised millions for charity, is writing about the terrible problems in the world, is a major voice for gay & lesbians, vocal about politics, looks fantastic, does what she wants, and as a woman in pop, she has remained at the top, now can she please come to Ireland in her next tour… anto

dd | 2/17/2008, 2:34 pm EST

Gage, Madonna has always been a sello-out in one way or another. And yeah, she wants to get back on the airwaves so what? My understanding is that this is NOT a hip-hop album, but a dance album with hip hop undertones.

weaver | 2/17/2008, 2:07 pm EST

I do not understand why every time there is an article about Madonna, Mariah will come up in the comments, and vice versa. Not to mention Janet, though it always seems to be more about MC.

To me, why all the arguing? They are both legendary in their own right at this point, and they are completely different types of artists.

Madonna and Mariah have both broken many records, and both have had some projects that were less than successful. So what. It is a matter of opinion who is “better” and totally depends on your taste in music.

Also, can we stop all the claims about worldwide sales? Billboard has written numerous times that they do not do an official worldwide tabulation. So any claim is no more than a rough estimate.

Jamie | 2/17/2008, 1:52 pm EST

Dan,

Exactly. The Madonna fans constantly state how she’s the “Queen”, completely reinvents herself, and doesn’t do the same old crap like Mariah. And that she whoops Mariah’s ass internationally. Yet they just can’t keep Mariah’s name out of it, when it comes down to their irrelevant idol. That’s because Madonna’s fans are threatened. Especially since they have to compare apples to oranges. One is an entertainer and the other is a vocalist. One has more musical talent than the other and of course that is Mariah.

Madonna fans do the same shit each time. They’re constantly on the Madge vs. Mariah shit. They are scared of Mariah and of course can’t admit it. No matter what they say about her. Mariah is the one with the REAL talent anyway. And again about payola, take a look in the mirror, dumbasses. Madonna’s label Warner Bros have used pay for play for her garbage, and it still BOMBED! So Madonna fans are in NO room to talk about Mariah supposedly using payola, when they have no facts to prove their bogus statements!

Jamie | 2/17/2008, 1:36 pm EST

Isla

You idiot. Mariah’s hits aren’t based off of payola. If you look at the list of the many payola using artists, Mariah’s name is not even present. But guess who’s name did made the list? MADONNA’S. Warner Bros used pay for play for her shit and it still bombed in the US! So stfu about Mariah using payola, because it is simply not true. Mariah has 17 # hits because her music is GOOD. If you like the music, then you’ll buy it. And so what if some of her hits are based off of airplay. That is actually a really good thing. If radio is spinning your shit, then that gives the general public time to react to it.

Don’t get mad just because Mariah is accepted on US radio, and they’re hardly ever willing to give Madonna’s irrelevant garbage any spins. Unless her record company is paying of course. Lol. At least Mariah didn’t become a sell out, and is just jumping on the bandwagon to get a hit, and sell some records.

Mariah’s TMB is very close to reaching 40 million impressions. I guarantee you that Madonna’s new material won’t even come close. Mariah’s new album is gonna crush Madonna’s in the US. Who cares if she has better sales internationally.

mister jones | 2/17/2008, 1:33 pm EST

I have always enjoyed Madonna’s and Janet’s high-calibre entertainment. Granted , neither is a gifted vocalist but the sum of all their other talents ( dancing, prancing, great videos and stage shows) has always made up for it and then some. It is unrealistic to expect drastic changes in style to come off as brilliant each time out. Madonna has been more experimental than any other with varying degrees of success/cred but at least she’s ventured where others have dared not go. Janet has the most impressive high-octane choreography by far, which is a big part of why I will always go to her concerts. Mariah, outsings both of them by a long shot and therefore has her own “thang” that M&J can’t touch. Mariah’s stage show is, to say the least, not her strength.
But, ya know what? I am a concert whore and will always go to see JJ and Madge burn it up . Mariah impressed the hell out of when I went to see her show last tour , but “only” in the vocal sense, which was amazing.
Love and worship these ladies and their age-inappropriateness, people!
The rich need to get richer! LOL

Kenny | 2/17/2008, 12:54 pm EST

I agree with Daren. There are so many talented female artists out there, yet people always seem to want to pit female artists against each other, whether it’s Mariah vs. Whitney, Christina vs. Britney, Madonna vs Everyone. It’s like people seem to think if they like this one female artist, they can’t like any other female artist. You don’t see people doing that with male artists. Nowhere in the Rolling Stone article was there even a mention of Mariah Carey, so why even bring her up? Let Mariah, Britney, Celine, Barbra, and Madonna enjoy the success that they have had, because all them have had astounding success in their careers and have proven they hang with the big boys.

Josh | 2/17/2008, 12:52 pm EST

25 years later and what do we see…

Mariah Carey… chasing butterflies
Michael Jackson… sleeping with boys
George Michael… cruising public toilets
Whitney Houston… crack is wack
Cindy Lauper… still singing her 1 hit
Janet Jackson… barely on the radar

MADONNA… STILL ON TOP…TRUE MUSIC & FASHION ICON.

Gage Kristofer | 2/17/2008, 12:04 pm EST

IM A BIG MADONNA FAN, BUT SHES SELLING OUT WITH THIS CD. SHE WONT MAKE THE RADIO UNLESS SHE HAS JUSTIN AND TIMBALAND BEHIND HER. DANCE IS MAKING A COMEBACK, AND NOW SHE GOING TO HIP HOP? OUCH

daren | 2/17/2008, 11:40 am EST

Instead of pitting one female artist againt another I think we should respect the fact that Mariah, Madonna, and Janet are still here doing what they do despite all their critics. There is so much sexism in the record industry, especially when it comes to age. Mariah and Madonna may be hitting 50 soon but that doesn’t mean they should sit at home on a couch and eat bon-bons while watching “Oprah.” Support ALL female entertainers.

DalBert | 2/17/2008, 10:42 am EST

Hey guys!!! Stop the bad coments about Madonna, let me remember that this year Madonna go to the Hall of Fame wich for now all Madonna’s fans have to focus on it, rigth now we are expecting the most susesfull record of this year!!!! MARIAH & BARBRA WE love you but no one has the power that the Queen of the mainstreem and Queen of POP has and there is only one MADONNA

Liz | 2/17/2008, 10:10 am EST

OMG! Madonna is so big and Mariah is so vulgar.

Madonna doesn’t give a shit about Carey.
It must be hard for these artists to always live in the shadow.

… so far I’ve heard “Candy Shop”, “4 minutes” and “The beat goes on”… out of the three I’d say that my favorite one is “The beat…” … my friend (BIG TIME Madonna’s fan) said he felt like “Candy shop” could essentially be a Britney reject… but I still liked it… just waiting ’till I can hear it on CD, with a better sound quality… ANYWAY: Best female ARTIST ever… go girl

i think madonna does not really care about sales of cds these days, her major income is through touring,i think its a shame for the record company of mariah to regard her as the most successful female artist, because that title includes so many things among which mariah has not even touched, let me mention the commonest ones:
1)Her tours have been big disappointments both financially and artistically

2)She has failed to impact the UK charts and also global charts.

3)She’s so obsest with charts which i find so unartistic for a 40 year old artist.

Madonna is in a different world..so debators END OF STORY

anagram | 2/17/2008, 9:57 am EST

Image wise;
Madonna = Chameleon Queen
Janet = Nice Trash
Mariah = Slutty slut

LOL…

US airways sucks… it’s boring, uneventful, unexciting. Always the same old shit sound, like Mariah’s songs. At least Janet’s still have a light punch. Madonna’s songs transient time people. Listen to Holiday then and Holiday now (Re-Invention Tour), it still sounds fresh! Try singing Mariah’s Dreamlover now, it sounds old trash. At least Janet’s Rhythem Nation can still kick some ass.

If you follow Madonna’s career, she never takes fame for granted, always pushing herself to be stronger, positive, different. She has grown from white trash to pure divine (with a brain and a great sense of humour to match).

Madonna IS every pop stars’ pop star. Who doesn’t want to work with her and learn a thing or two?

John | 2/17/2008, 8:09 am EST

The facts speak for themselves. Madonna is a global icon and a living legend. She is known worldwide, people are dancing to her music all over the world.

She has been written off so many times and has always proved her critics wrong. Where are her rivals? Where have they all gone. Have you ever seen her in concert? Absolutely AMAZING! She really puts out for her fans.
This could be the biggest record of her spectacular 25 year career.
Don’t ever stop dancing, provocing and entertaining us Madonna. We love you!
Long live the queen of the dancefloor!!

Tomislav | 2/17/2008, 5:54 am EST

Ok, I also don’t get that about Mariah fans. Ok she is big in the US who cares it is nat the world, with all that airplay support who wouldn’t be. Madonna was always the international star who pushed the buttons Mariah just sang then went crazy.

Dax | 2/17/2008, 5:01 am EST

“Why does Mariahs fans always raid posts about Madonna?”

Scroll down, sister…the first Mariah vs. Madonna comment was made by a Madonna fan. You know it was bound to create a reaction.

KC | 2/17/2008, 4:34 am EST

“THe statement about Barbara is ok I guess but she has not maintained the chart sucess that Madonna has maintained for 25 years, this is what the point is, the facts are no one has ever charted like Madonna has for that amount of time.”

Perhaps you need to do better research then. Barbra’s first top ten album was in 1963, and her last #1 album was in 1997 (that’s 34 years right there). Her last 5 albums since 1999 have debuted in the top 10 (making that 29 top 10 albums she has had), and have gone gold and/or platinum. Her 2006 concert tour was one of the most successful tours of that year. When she returned to the stage back in 94, that tour was also very successful, and one of the most talked about back then (and that’s after 30 years of being in the business). You can subtract Barbra’s downtime (which isn’t much), and she’d still have Madonna beat in terms of longevity.

I’m not asking anyone to like Barbra, and I could care less if you don’t. I’m a fan of Madonna as well, and I think her accomplishments are impressive as well. She may be more famous internationally, and may have racked up more hits (although Barbra has never really been a singles artist, despite an impressive top 40 singles chart run in 70s and early 80s), but if you’re going to talk about longevity, give credit where credit is due.

Well after reading so many post tn this form.I’m amazed at the positive and negative on a lady that works so hard to bring so much joy to the world thru her music. All people should look beyond her music, and look at the woman and know what is real. Other (stars) make their wealth and live lavishly on there fame. While Madonna and this is in her words I qoute ” THE MORE MONEY I MAKE THE MORE MONEY I CAN GIVE”.This woman could have easily went away in her own life. But she decided to stay and create new and fresh music to people.who love what she has to offer so she can Give to people who eat dirt for every meal every day. NO ONE ON THIS PLANT SHOULD GO HUNGERY, Thank you Madonna for being born during my generation so I could know a beautiful human being. ( jesus brought love to the world and so does MADONNA)..

anthony | 2/17/2008, 2:47 am EST

Our parents had the Beattles, Elvis, & Marylin. We have Madonna. What other present artist can be compared like this? A true artist she is. In the 80’s + 90’s she pushed the sexual envelope. Now she pushes sonic boundaries. Even long after she disappears, i don’t think that her music can be stopped!

wawawewo | 2/17/2008, 2:17 am EST

lets look to see Britney today and Madonna today.. we can only laugh our asses off at Britney. Secondly Madonna is way far ahead in sales and hits then both Mooriah and Janet. Madonna is a living legend and the Queen of Pop

southcalif. | 2/17/2008, 1:58 am EST

MADONNA IS MADONNA, BRITNEY NOR PAULINA RUBIO WILL EVER BE HER. MADONNA FOR 25+ YEARS HAS BROUGHT OUT THE BEST IN MUSIC TRYING TO GIVE WOMEN AND GIRLS A LITTLE BIT MORE FREEDOM AND WON! BRITNEY IS JUST MAKING A FOOL OF HERSELF TRYING TO BE PROVACOTIVE AND A HEADLINER LIKE MADONNA WAS BUT IS BEING STUPID IN THE WAY SHE IS DOING IT. BRITNEY GROW UP U ARE NOT MADONNA NOR WILL U EVER SELL LIKE HER NOR GROW MORE FAMOUS THAN HER.

ADAM | 2/17/2008, 1:32 am EST

While the rest of the world, admires madonna… you can see americans disagree. how typical… its always been the world vs. the u.s. - these people are just clueless about everything, no wonder the whole world thinks they’re delusional.

Adam | 2/17/2008, 1:26 am EST

Oh and one more thing. Anonmous, u know, the idiot that made the long dragged out comment trying to denounce Madonna a few before mine? Well they’re exactly that, an Idiot!

Adam | 2/17/2008, 1:18 am EST

Madonna is a legacy that will continue on and on, no matter what she does. She is a one and only. Like Marilyn, Elvis, Sinatra, she will never fade away.

Beluga Bill | 2/17/2008, 12:47 am EST

Madonna’s albums always sound fishy in text… but then you finally get to hear the record and you realize all over again how fantastically capable she is of making history. I’m dancing in boots, if you will.

MADRYE | 2/17/2008, 12:28 am EST

Can she be any more pathetic? Justin & Timbo are so 2 years ago! She is really crawling into the cracks to find a hit. Sad, old Madonna, when will you realize… you are dead but just to stupid to lay down!

Anonymous | 2/17/2008, 12:04 am EST

Actually Jody Watley was called “the black Madonna” in 1987 but she had the same style dating back to 1980 when she was in the R&B group Shalamar before there was even a Madonna (do your homework). In terms of people giving Madonna all this credit for female sexuality–Josephine Baker was causing internantional controversy decades before Madonna. All I am saying is that Madonna will never be considered a true artist just an opportunist and a person who slept their way to the top–that is nothing to be proud of. In the meantime, for those who say Mariah can’t sell internationally–Music Box sold 24 million copies worldwide, Daydream did 21 million copies worldwide and Emancipation has sold 14 (not 12 million) million not bad considering 5 million of those were sold in U.S. so obviously the other 9 million were overseas. I like how Madonna
