Ringo Starr Weaves a Dream Of All-Stars For His Summer Tour

2/14/08, 3:44 pm EST

Ringo Starr may have finally managed to top himself: Joining the onetime Beatle this summer for his tenth All Starr Band tour are Colin Hay (Men at Work), Edgar Winter, Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), Billy Squier and the Dream Weaver himself, Gary Wright. For those not familiar with the All Starr band tours, since 1989 Ringo Starr has traveled with a rotating lineup of musicians who sing two or three of their own hits and back Starr up on his solo songs and Beatles tracks. Previous All Starrs have run the gamut from Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton to Sheila E and Paul Carrack. The last time we saw the show it was at Rib Burn Off at a parking lot in downtown Cleveland. We remember standing there, eating some delicious ribs and watching Jack Bruce and Ringo Starr enthusiastically play “Hungry Eyes” with Eric Carmen and thinking, “This is the weirdest fucking thing ever.”

Keep reading for Rolling Stone’s best guess at this year’s set list and the official list of tour dates:

“It Don’t Come Easy”
“Back Off Boogaloo”
“Who Can It Be Now?”

I was at the Rib Burn Off show in Cleveland too – it was weird. (Though, don’t forget Carmen is a Clevelander.) Maybe the whole All Starr band thing needed a break at that point, and this hiatus will prove to have been just what the doctor ordered? Regardless, the All Starr band historically played the Northeast Ohio area (e.g., Blossom) and it is interesting to note their departure. Maybe it’s because there is no Indian Casino in Cuyahoga County?

The version with Todd Rundgren, Joe Walsh, Nils Lofgren and Dave Edmunds and Burton Commings was actually pretty awesome.

All these guys and Greg Bisonnette too? I can’t wait to hear “Dream Weaver”, “Frankenstein”, “Down Under” and all the other great songs, and I can’t wait to hear all these guys backed by double drummers of Starr and Bisonette. This will be a great tour, and I plan to catch at least one of the shows, but hopefully more.
Please also put out a DVD of this tour as well.

We were so disappointed today- we drove 3 hours to Bethel Woods to see Ringo ; but, after we got there, it was announced that the concert had been canceled and would not be resceduled. The reason for the cancellation was an eqipment problem on 1 of the trucks. My whole family goes every time Ringo is on tour. I really am so sad that I’ll be missing him tis year.

I too was diasappoineted to say the least! We drove 5hrs from where he played the night before just so my kids could go. Got a rip off rate at amotel in the middle of nowhere just to be told he canceled!Something stinks about the whole thing!

tom | 6/29/2008, 3:18 pm EST

The real reason the show was canceled, because the tour personel never filed the paper work with the US/Candian Import Export office, and the Tour Trucks were not aloud to come into the country.

I just saw Ringo with his wonderful all Star band last night in Westbury. Blew me away! What a great show! Ringo, as always, was his hysterical self. What a great personality that man has!!!! I’ve seen six of his concerts and “…it’s getting better all the time!” Thanks, Ringo!!!! Love, Linda XXXXX

We just got back from the show at Mystic Lake Casino. It was in their new auditorium. The sound was great and the entire show was amazing. I would have to say this was the tightest and vocally best show I have seen from the All Starrs . This is what a rock show should be musically. It’s always fun watching these diverse groups playing on each other’s tunes. Don’t miss it!

Mick, Mpls, Mn | 7/15/2008, 12:40 am EST

P.S. A DVD and/or CD from this tour is definitely in order.
