“American Idol” Cuts Top Fifty Down to Twenty-Four Semifinalists

2/14/08, 11:08 am EST

American Idol began with a bizarre plug for Hayden Christensen’s new movie Jumper that involved Ryan Seacrest, a mountaintop and a can of Coke and ended with twenty-six broken-hearted hopefuls lamenting they’d “have to get a job now.” Which means twenty-four contestants are going to the semifinals, dawg! In an excruciatingly drawn-out hour, Simon, Paula and Randy sent a few audition stars packing (emo warbler Josiah Leming; tie aficionado Kyle Ensley; big personality Jeffrey Lampkin) and rewarded a few of our favorites (rock & roll nurse Amanda Overmyer; spunky Danny Noriega; tattooed Irishwoman Carly Smithson). Guys will compete next Tuesday, February 19th and girls will perform the next night. The first live results show will be Thursday, February 21st, when four singers will be sent home. For the full list of semifinalists (and a clip of the weirdest acceptance ever: Paula’s “spell your name, Syesha!”), keep reading.

Why are we not mentioning that Carly Smithson had a major, multimillion dollar deal with MCA as Carly Hennessy back in 1999? Her debut album sold around 400 copies upon release. I know this isn’t breaking news, but I’m surprised RS doesn’t have something to say about it.

American Idol is getting pretty racist now.. The asians are voting only for the filipino girl ramiele based on her race. If a white person or black person did the same thing it would trouble for them. But Philipino people are allowed to do it in this country and abroad on american idol.

I try to stay off the american idol boards to avoid getting upset.

To the earlier comment about the voting being racist, do you not realize how many white and african americans there are that compromise the voting demographic of the program? You think actually think Obama isn’t getting voting help from ethnic groups? If you want to talk about fair voting, especially based on ethnicity how long has white america ruled in voting? Now I understand that purely voting on race is dumb but the girl has talent, maybe not to your taste, so let’s not jump on the race bandwagon quite yet. As far as lopsided voting I think Yao Ming being a starting All-Star was more ridiculous than the voting on AI thus far.
