New Rothbury Festival to Hit U.S. in July: Matthews, Mayer, Snoop, Modest Mouse

2/13/08, 6:00 am EST

A new, environmentally conscious music festival is about to hit the ever-growing U.S. market July 4th weekend: AEG Live (the folks behind Coachella) and Madison House Presents are introducing the Rothbury Festival, to be held in Rothbury, Michigan on July 3rd through 6th at the idyllic Double JJ Ranch near Lake Michigan. Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh & Friends, Modest Mouse, 311 and Snoop Dogg are among the many confirmed acts, and organizers say the festival’s goal is to draw attention to climate change and clean energy alternatives. To wit, the weekend will feature a think tank featuring panel discussions on those climate concerns, an energy fair where attendees can get their hands on related technology and products, and the festivals’ campgrounds will strive for a zero-waste experience via composting, carbon-offsetting and more strategies (alternative lodging will also be available for festival-goers who don’t want to pitch a tent). For the initial lineup announcement — the fest promises more than seventy bands on eight stages — keep reading. The first batch of tickets go on sale February 27th at the fest’s official site.

I’m from this area of MI originally and this is pretty exciting news! But, this is the sort of show I wish acts like: WILCO, SON VOLT, GARY LOURIS, SOUL ASYLUM, ROBBIE FULKS, etc. would be playing at as well. Too bad.

clay | 2/14/2008, 11:04 am EST

im so there…dmb, sts9, primus, modest mouse, whats up michigan

Tony | 2/14/2008, 11:36 am EST

I’ve been to Bonnaroo the first few years and being from Michigan this looks awesome!

Way nicer weather, better location, probably not crappy rain with crappy mud.

Could do without the crappy first three acts.

I’m sure DMB and co. will bring the frat boys out.

dont forget to check out silver lake, pines point, or flip city disc golf. out of towners should plan an extra day in town to check out the lake michigan beaches. spend your money in muskegon and north of, rather than grand haven

chris | 2/17/2008, 12:14 am EST

too bad they are competing with summer celebration :\ idk where to spend my dollars

Anonymous | 2/17/2008, 3:50 pm EST

hmmm,

if you google “rothbury mars volta” it says they are playing in the google search but when you click on the actual festival website it does not list them. However, right when you click on the website there is a list of the bands that disappears immediately. The mars volta are listed on that too. you have to be quick to catch it but it is there. Hope they play b/c they are awesome live.

about time my home state actually did something besides house a declining automobile industry!

This festival is guaranteed to dole out some face meltings!

chicago | 3/9/2008, 11:26 am EST

who started the phish reunion rumor? not gunna happen.a band of that calibur would certainly announce a show to their loyal followers. but i bet gordon and fishman play somethin together

chicago | 3/10/2008, 6:30 pm EST

Anybody saying that Mayer sucks has been watching his crowds rather than listening to his music. He is quickly becoming our generations’ Clapton. I’ve been following him since 2001 and thankfully each year there are less and less teeny-boppers in the crowd, and more people that can appreciate what he’s doing. This will be a great enviroment to watch him in as you won’t have the typical Mayer attendees at Rothbury. And for anyone that hasn’t seen or heard Ray Lamontagne before, prepare to be dazzled.

Keep Creaming | 3/11/2008, 3:23 pm EST

To LIVEITNOW, if you think Dave Matthews Band started this festival you sure haven’t been around the Jam Band scene for that long or you are a foolish fratboy. Over half of DMB fans could care less about the environment. Dave and the band maybe environmentally aware but not half of their fanbase of MTV loving, money hungry, republican supporting, teenyboppers.

hinks | 3/11/2008, 3:27 pm EST

LiveItNow has no clue, stop wasting time with the idiot. It’s fans like LiveItNow that has ruined festival line-ups like Bonaroo, and Vagoose. Stay home fratboy.

bvguitar | 3/13/2008, 10:40 am EST

You can’t really ask for too much more with this line-up. I’ll be making my way from Memphis,TN as well. Bonnaroo this year is a fuckin joke compared to this.

Kontorsmasken | 3/24/2008, 8:21 am EST

Its very true. It was the DMB fans that ruined him for me. Hopefully seeing him at a Festival like Rothbury will bring his music back to me without the distraction of obnoxious drunk fratboys and annoying screeching teenyboppers.

hoppamomma | 4/4/2008, 10:32 am EST

This is gonna be freakin’ crazy! Im 60 miles from there! Gettin ready to groove to Emmit-Nershi and Widespread!

matty | 4/9/2008, 4:55 pm EST

Jambase is giving away 2 VIP tickets to Rothbury. Go to the site, click on the Contests tab, and get your enter on!!!

intrepid traveler | 4/28/2008, 2:35 pm EST

We’re driving up from CO to see this.. its going to the festival of the summer man!

Muskegon native | 4/30/2008, 11:35 am EST

okay… first off you all are spreading fake rumors. Dave Matthews did’nt start rothbury… Madison House and the owners of Double jj ranch did. second, let’s hear respect to all the bands that are performing this summer at the festival. why are we trying to prove who is a bigger fan then who? I’m worried for summer celebration. true both events are taking place in ski-town, but rothbury is gonna totally wipe out

Icculus | 5/4/2008, 7:43 am EST

Phish @ Rothbury rumors came out of employees at “EVENT STAFF” ( yellow shirts). Apparently they were told that they will/might have to deal with the security issues that come with a Phish reunion.

Sqwib | 5/11/2008, 12:38 am EST

i first heard about this fest on WXRT in chicago. this should be an awesome festival. double JJ kicks ass (been there)! but won’t attend as we’re going furthur north in august to another michigan gem of a festival-the dunegrass festival @ sleeping bear dunes. advice for folks coming from out west–take the carferries across lake michigan to avoid the traffic in chicago!!!!! you won’t regret it!!!

sirsasana | 6/3/2008, 1:05 am EST

after the money’s gone. once in a lifetime. am i right or am i wrong? i’ll cast my vote for a phish reunion. that, and lax entrance in the west side of the state. same as it ever was. watch FESTIVAL EXPRESS.

fraternity member | 6/8/2008, 4:09 pm EST

why all the hate on these people yeah sure some are drunk idiots but some are not why sterotype a group a people….not all italians are mobsters, not all african americans are in gangs…why all the hate..

DETROIT IS READY!! | 6/18/2008, 1:05 pm EST

Hey, all of us Michiganders have been waiting for this blow out of the summer…seems like we’re always forgotten.
This fest is gonna make up for that…can’t wait to see nershi again!!!
PEACE…BE KIND!!
