Rock List: Readers’ Dream Festival Lineup

2/11/08, 5:20 pm EST

With the announcement of the lineups for Bonnaroo and South By Southwest last week, we asked the readers what bands would make up their dream festival lineup. Getting together the below list of twenty-seven bands would certainly be a challenge, but the readers certainly didn’t refrain from dreaming big. The lineup was based on number of votes, so the three headliners received the biggest number of endorsements (with Led Zeppelin coming in first overall). Check out the full three-day fantasy lineup of Rock Daily Readersapalooza after the jump.

Yesh! | 2/14/2008, 9:26 am EST

okay, don’t tease us with such an insane lineup after recently witnessing the disapointing reality of the REAL Coachella and Bonnaroo lineups.

Haba Quaba | 2/13/2008, 9:00 pm EST

I can say without guilt that this lineup, though fictional, makes me giddy.

Anonymous | 2/13/2008, 5:38 pm EST

Headline: Nirvana
The Clash
Bob Marley
James Brown
Joy Divison
Syd Barrett
Nick Drake
Jeff & Tim Buckley
Elliot Smith

I’d say 2pac but can’t be bothered but if he got on stage I wouldn’t complain along with Lennon, Hendrix, and many others and for the record I’d put Queen plus INXS on another day

Not saying anyone of these is better than the other just think if it was possible it would be a good day for all.

take guns and roses out. (they only had one good album guys-sorry they are not worthy of any praise-they basically suck in the grand scheme of things- I mean I would take emerson lake and palmer over the those posers) and put the Who in. U2 should close out one of the days

cd | 2/12/2008, 7:25 pm EST

nice line up. saturday looks like the best day…tho the white stripes and the allman brothers band would be great as well….i dont get radio head…their music sounds like a bunched of mashed up crap piled onto more annoying crap…but again thats my opinion

Troy | 2/12/2008, 4:45 pm EST

Yeah,

I would put Radiohead at the top of the bill. This is 2008, not 1978.

And we can use a festival without Sabbath, AC/DC, Guns & Noses, even the Who. I “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”

sg | 2/12/2008, 4:37 pm EST

Radiohead is cool but they`ve got a ways to go before they are put alongside even 60 year old Zeppelin or Floyd. I`d love to see Ozzy Sabbath and Zeppelin co-headline so we can see who is the god of metal/hard rock.

No Van Halen is just indescribabley terrible.

Again, though how the heck is Radiohead headlining over Beck, Bowie,or even the friggin White Stripes?

No Ozzy, no Dio, no Metallica, no Judas Priest, no Sabbath, no Van Halen. All in all this list completely ignores metal.

I`d say Saturday fits the bill of the best of the best but Friday is just a joke, and Sunday could definitely be a LOT better

sg | 2/12/2008, 4:26 pm EST

No Sabbath? Come one guys,

Yenrac | 2/12/2008, 3:11 pm EST

Yeah…..Metallica would be a maybe, but I’m not the biggest fan of them…although I’m not the biggest Prince fan either, so oh well. I could see them in, but who’s out?

Coldplay? I thought about them, but they’d really fit best on day 2, and personally I’d rather have my day 2 lineup as is (keeping sentimental fave Todd R, I know, I’m biased)…..Coldplay aren’t alternative enough for Day 1 and aren’t rocking enough for day 3…I did consider them though….

If I had a day 4, they might headline (the “more adult contempary” day)

Thursday:
Coldplay (headliners)
Wilco
Death Cab for Cutie,
Green Day,
Blur (w/Graham Coxon)/Gorillaz
Sheryl Crow
Beck
Lenny Kravitz
Smashing Pumpkins

I think that’s not a bad day 4 either.

MB | 2/12/2008, 2:21 pm EST

No Metallica or Coldplay?! Hello! Paul and Ringo and U2 should be the main headliners for there nights as well.

Yenrac | 2/12/2008, 2:02 pm EST

Here’s my pick for the Yenrac festival (to be held annually in Chicago in place of Lollapalooza). I’ve tried to post this a few times already so this’ll be the last:

Friday:
Headliner: Pearl Jam
Spoon
PJ Harvey
TV on the Radio
The Flaming Lips
The Polyphonic Spree
Talking Heads (or at least David Byrne)
The Pixies
Sonic Youth

Saturday:
Headliner: Paul McCartney/Oasis
Ryan Adams
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Willie Nelson
Bob Dylan
Brian Wilson
Aerosmith
Todd Rundgren (without the new Cars)
Ray Davies (and maybe as he’s hinted the original Kinks–brother Dave, Mick Avory and Pete Quaife).

Sunday:
Co Headliners: The Who/Led Zeppelin
Rush
Neil Young and Crazy Horse
The White Stripes
David Bowie
Roger Waters (I’d rather see just him than Pink Floyd these days)
U2
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Radiohead

Personal ly I’d love all 3 days….and all 3 have their own vibe. Day 1 is the alternative rock group, offering everything from the experimental (TV on the Radio and David Byrne) to dreamy (Polyphonic, Flaming Lips) to artsy (PJ Harvey, Pixies, Sonic Youth) to more commercial (Spoon, and definately Pearl Jam).

Day 2 is for the pure classic rock fan: Paul McCartney and Oasis “share the bill” but Sir Paul gets the top nod seeing that he’s a Beatle for Chrissakes….Petty and Ryan Adams join together a bit on stage, and are later joined with Bob and Willie for a mega star couple of songs (Ryan isn’t quite the mega star but he might bring some younger crowds and he’s basically just as talented and plays more in that old style). The original Pye era Kinks reunite and then die on stage (All but the awesome to see live Ray who’s a spitfire, Dave was awesome in the 2000’s too but that was prestroke). Todd Rundgren adds a twist to any concert and focuses on the Nazz-early 70s rock stuff with a little Liars brought in. Day 2 would be fun.

Day 3 is basically a guitar gods day. The Who and Zeppelin meld together nicely…..we find out for sure who’s the better live act as the Who’s Leeds is the best recorded output but Zepp have a fabulous rep. Zack Starkey plays drums for both bands when they play separately. They mix Stairway with Won’t Get Fooled Again into perfection, using the brilliance of John Paul Jones….finally we see what would have been but unfortunatley the 2 original zepplers (Moon the Loon and the Ox) are now deceased….still it would be awesome. Add in the power of Rush, Neil Young’s guitar (he might have Stephen Stills if Stills recovers) and Jack White plays with an actual backup band for this one.

This would be the ultimate festival. No Stones because they’d totally drive the price up. Paul would like to too, but his proceeds go to vegetarianism and stopping landmines, so he plays for free.

KMC | 2/12/2008, 2:01 pm EST

Since we can dream big on this, how about an Uncle Tupelo reunion?

Fecal Matter | 2/12/2008, 1:34 pm EST

If any of those concerts actually ever did take place, can you imagine what the tickets prices would be to see those bands perform in this day and age. You can expect over $1,000 a ticket easy (esp. for Saturdays lineup).

Anonymous | 2/12/2008, 1:20 pm EST

TOOL
Fiona Apple
The Decemberists
Earth Wind & Fire
Stevie Wonder
Rage Against the Machine
The Rolling Stones
Smashing Pumpkins
Tenacious D
YES

So | 2/12/2008, 12:51 pm EST

Is Arcade Fire a joke or serious I can’t tell. And I don’t even believe that Radiohead was voted in, their twelve fans can’t type articulately through the tears.

Hmmm | 2/12/2008, 12:24 pm EST

Does anyone else think it’s kind of sad that the average age of the performers is at least 50. I mean everyone besides the members of Arcade Fire and the White Stripes is at least close to 40 if not older

Anonymous | 2/12/2008, 11:34 am EST

I think it supposed to be possible thats why no Who.
Phish was well placed I thought.
I’m sick of hearing about Radiohead. I get it-they rock, lets move on.
I think I’d rather see:
LCDCOUNDSYSTEM than Arcade Fire
Simon and Garfunkel instead of Paul and Ringo.
And somethin other than rock and indie rock would be cool.
Amy Winehouse, Ghostface, M.I.A., Jay-Z, Eminem & Dr. Dre would be kinda cool.

tom h | 2/12/2008, 10:35 am EST

You are all wrong, guns n roses is where its at, axl is a mothafuckin god

dtcmolloy | 2/12/2008, 9:40 am EST

DT | 2/11/2008, 7:10 pm EST

matt | 2/11/2008, 7:02 pm EST

Pavement needs added to friday, and paul and ringo headline over zeppelin

The Duke | 2/11/2008, 6:50 pm EST
